on a charge of perjury after it wasfound that she had lied about a house
robbery in Lansdowne.Lansdowne police spokesperson Sergeant
NkululekoMnyaka says they received infor-mation of a house robbery on Monday lastweek.Mnyaka says it was initially reported that
an unknown man had robbed a home inCrawford.“The incident allegedly occurred in Hay
Road. Thewoman – a domesticworker –wasalone in the house when she heard someoneknocking at the gate and went to open it. It
was a man who introduced himself as some-one who was sent by the owner to fetch thecar,” Mnyaka says.According to her statement, the domestic
worker let the man in and while she was onthe phone with her boss to verify, the manput a firearm to her ribs and demanded thecar keys.
‘Locked in room’According to Mnyaka the domestic work-
er alleged that the man pushed her into thehouse, locked her in a room and ransackedthe house.“The suspect took two televisions and two
remotes, a PlayStation and a blue ToyotaTazz with registration number CY 130 062.The car was parked in the yard.“The suspect drove off in an unknown di-
rection.”
Arrested two days laterPolice opened a case of house robbery but

Larger ICU willsave more kidsAn upgrade of the paediatric
intensive care unit (Picu) isunderway at the Red Cross WarMemorial Children’s Hospitalin Rondebosch.
The expanded Picu will pro-vide life-saving treatment tothousands of the hospital’syoung patients.
With a dire shortage of Picubeds in South Africa, the up-grade – at a cost of more thanR100m – will significantly im-prove intensive care servicesgiven to critically ill and in-jured children.
Construction has officiallybegun and is expected to be com-pleted by October 2017. The newPicu will be able to accommo-date more patients than beforeand will have isolation units toavert cross-infection and a spe-cifically designed area for neo-natal care.
The expansion and upgradewill also create a comfortableand supportive space for par-ents and breastfeeding mothers.Currently, family membershave no privacy or space be-tween life-saving equipment asthey hold vigil at their child’sside. Increased space will alsomean that staff who work verylong hours saving lives in toughconditions, will have adequateaccommodation. These staffmembers work tirelessly to pro-vide clinical, educational and research ser-vices.
The current Picu at the Red Cross Chil-dren’s Hospital is already the largest inten-sive care unit for children in Africa. There
is a dire need to boost its capacity due tothe growing demand for Picu beds.
The Children’s Hospital Trust is fundrais-ing for the project cost. Government willcontribute R30m.

ACrawford liquor shop’s application forextended trading hours has been denied.Members of the Athlone subcouncil unan-
imously decided to deny the application atthe latest subcouncil meeting. The applicant, AromaDrop Inn on the cor-
ner of Kromboom Road and Bridge Way,handed in a second application for extendedtrading hours after the previous applicationhad been denied. At the most recent subcouncil meeting,
ward councillors reached consensus to not
grant the application. The business applied for off-consumption
trading hours fromMondays to Saturdays tobe extended from 18:00 to 20:00.Aroma Drop Inn also applied for off-con-
sumption trading hours to be extended from11:00 to 18:00.Ward 60 councillor AntheaGreen says she
does not support the application as she doesnot approve of the extended hours.“To my knowledge, there was also a peti-
tion against this particular establishment. The petition was to have it closed down,”Green says. She adds that the application goes against
the wishes of the residents in the area.In Aroma Drop Inn’s motivation to have
extended trading hours granted it says “thelicensee has been trading in these premisesfor many years and has a good record withno complaints regarding its activities beingsubmitted or investigated”.“The licensee has provided a good service
to the local community for all the years ofits operation and this business is an estab-lished presence in the community.”According toward councillor JunadeHoo-
sain, the applicant is “persistent”.“This is the second time we received this
application. It is as if the applicant has total
disregard for the decision-making of the sub-council,” Hoosain says.
Noisy neighboursHoosain adds he lives a few blocks away
from the store “but can hear the noise gener-ated by the patrons of this business”.“The noise levels are unbearable. It is the
people who live under the bridge who sup-port the business the most and who actuallycause the most nuisance,” Hoosain says.Ward councillors at the meeting were
pleasedwith the decision not to grant the ap-plication for extended off-consumption li-quor trading hours.

An application for a business licence atpremises in Denver Road, Lansdowne wasreferred back to the applicant by the Ath-lone subcouncil on Thursday. The application, received from Marcel-
lino van der Schyff, was for a business li-cence for five limited pay-out, or slot ma-chines.It was referred back because there had
been no public participation on the mat-ter.The property is situated in a residential
area.Ward councillors asked to comment on
the application agreed that the application
was to be sent back due to the main stake-holders – residents in the area – not beingconsulted.Ward 60 councillor Anthea Green was
excused from the decision-making processas she declared she knew Van der Schyff. The matter was discussed in her absence.Ward councillor JunadeHoosain recom-
mended that the application be referredback.Ward councillor Antonio van der
Rheede added that the business was locat-ed in a ratepayers’ area and public partici-pation was needed.“It is standard process that the public is
engaged in such processes. I agree that thematter gets referred and the correct proce-dure is followedwith regard to the applica-
tion,” Van der Rheede said.Ward councillor Ganief Hendricks
said he commended the councillors forhaving the best interests of residents atheart when it came to the granting of li-quor and gambling licences.Hendricks also remarked on the crimi-
nal record of the applicant. It had beenstated in the application that the ownerhad been charged on an offence of beingover the legal alcohol limit.“It must be pointed out that if the own-
er himself was found to be over the limit, what tells us that he can keep his patronsunder the limit?” Hendricks asked. The itemwill be brought to subcouncil
again after the public participation pro-cedure has been completed.

EARL HAUPT@EarlHaupt
One Mitchell’s Plain man’s journey is setto come full circle in New York this week
in his race to raise funds for underprivilegedschools across Cape Town.
Irafaan Abrahams, known affectionatelyas “Fanie”, has been a teacher at RocklandsHigh School for the last 10 years and livesin Bayview.
Abrahams (45) sayshe enjoys teaching andwon’t give it up very easily.
In his project, the “Irafaan Abrahams R1mchallenge”, he aims to raise money by run-ning of some of the world’s biggest and mostprestigious marathons. The money raisedgoes towards improving the state of variousschools across the city.
The project was born after Abrahamsjoined a running club and thought of waysin which he could make a difference in otherpeople’s lives, starting with the school hefound himself at in Rocklands.
“We wanted to complete a building thatwas incomplete at our school and the ideacame about: Why not run a marathon? Butjust not any marathon and knowing a goodfriend of mine, Cameron Dugmore, who wasthe Western Cape minister of education atthe time, ran the New York marathon forcharity in 2010 and I remember that he toowasn’t an avid runner.”
Dugmore secured an entry into the 2011race, which immediately took Fanie by sur-prise as he had never run a half-marathon,let alone a full marathon, in his life.
Out of that the challenge was born.“We were a group of friends who got to-
gether. We first wanted to only help Rock-lands High, but we decided that if we can doit for Rocklands, we could do it for otherschools as well. That is where the idea cameabout where we will put special cards withschools’ names on it. schools don’t have topay for anything and we will try to promoteit where the schools could benefit, but wewanted to benefit underprivileged schools.
“The first year we had ten schools comeon board, Rylands High to Sea Point, if I re-member correctly. It was quite a diversegroup of schools and we launched it quite
professionally.”
Big five marathonsAbrahams says that upon his return
from his first marathon in New York, itwas decided that the challenge was goingto be a five-year project, aiming to partici-pate in four of the other big marathons(Boston, Chicago, Berlin and London).
“We were going to try and do one peryear in order to raise funds for underprivi-leged schools. Lo and behold after the veryfirst year, the New York marathon, wemanaged to raise close to R310 000 for un-derprivileged schools, which was mind-blowing, because we weren’t even think-ing of raising anywhere close to thatamount of money.”
He says over the course of the next twoyears, the initiative already surpassed itsR1m target, with the fund currently stand-ing at more than R1.5m following his par-ticipation in the Boston marathon earlierthis year.
“We source our own sponsors and there-fore we don’t need to go on a 50/50 or 60/40relationship with any of the schools. Thatis what makes this project so successfuland unique.”
Abrahams has been awarded the addedprivilege of being one of the New Yorkmarathon’s flag-bearers in this year’sopening ceremony and leaves for the BigApple on Wednesday, but it is merely thecherry on the cake. He says there is moreto come from him in the future.
“We still have one crazyprojectwhenweget back from New York, but I cannot letthe cat out of the bag just yet. But for nextyear, things have been going well.
“There have been organisations thathave already approachedme to seehowwecan use whatever we have done to take theproject forward and raise more funds byusing these challenges to make peoplemore aware. So if it has been marathonsthat we have done, who knows, it could beMountKilimanjaro, it could beBaseCampAfrica, it could be trekking through theSa-hara desert, for all you know. Even a cyclefrom Cape Town to Cairo – the sky is thelimit.

Burning to paint a better lifeEARL HAUPT
@EarlHaupt
Shack fires remain a very real threat tothe lives of many South Africans living
in informal settlements.More than 300 people were displaced in
Masiphumelele last weekend when 70shacks were gutted in a blaze allegedlycaused by a faulty electrical wire, whilethree people died in three other shack firesin Khayelitsha, Philippi and Strand thesame weekend.
Having to rebuild your life after it hasbeen reduced to a pile of ash when you re-turn home is a constant fear, but a fear ofshack dwellers which could be extin-guished in the not too distant future.
Transception, headed by Justin Ziets-man, is aiming to change the lives of thosewho are not fortunate enough to live in abrick and mortar house of their own.
Paint awayZietsman’s Khusela Ikhaya project aims
to prevent shack fires in the upcomingsummer months by protecting the shacksthrough a layer of intumescent paint.
In the event of a fire, the paint, whichcovers the shack, will immediately formfoam which smothers the flame and pre-vents it from spreading to other parts of thestructure, let alone neighbouring struc-tures.
The project will roll out its next phase infireproofing informal structures on 2 No-vember to about 3000 homes situated alongthe Masiphumelele wetlands.
“The reason why we chose Masiphume-lele first is because it is one of the hotspotsin the Western Cape. It is one of the mostdensely populated areas and there havebeen a number of fires in that settlement,”says Zietsman.
Zietsman’s team provided demonstra-tions as to how the paint protects theirhomes.
“The people were just blown away, be-cause for the first time they can go to theEastern Cape now knowing that theirhouses will still be there when they getback. Every single time a fire happens inthe Western Cape, it costs taxpayers be-tween R6000 and R17 500 per home. Our ini-tiative only costs R1500.”
Khusela Ikhaya is endorsed by the Cityof Cape Town’s department of human set-tlements.
Western Province rugby player ScarraNtubeni has put his weight behind theproject and will act as an ambassador intownships to promote it and further upliftthe lives of others in the community, longafter the paint has dried.
“It was one of the first projects that I hada chance to get involved in where you arenot benefitting, but it is all about the peopleand how you can improve other people’sliving standards,” he says.
Ntubeni saw Khusela Ikhaya’s pilotproject in the Somerset West township ofWag ’n Bietjie and instantly saw what a dif-
ference the paint made to the lives of theshack dwellers.
“By just painting the house and makingit look presentable and knowing that thosepeople are secured and safe, they start tak-ing pride and look after what they have.”
Twenty other hotspots have been identi-fied for future upliftment, with mayor Pa-tricia de Lille already asking for the roll-out of the project into at least five of themin the not too distant future.
“We will go back to the mayor and tellher which areas we have identified and sheneeds to tell us which area they would liketo roll out in,” Zietsman says.
Get on boardHowever, Transception and the govern-
ment cannot complete the programme bythemselves.
“Companies, philanthropists and pri-vate people need to come on board to help,”he says.
The agreement in place will see govern-ment provide the funding for the homes tobe painted on the sides. The top of the struc-ture could be painted in a pattern relatedto a company or in a cultural-themed motif.
“We also want to add the beautificationaspect. This goes to more than just paint-ing; we identify skill sets in the communitywhere people can be trained to do certainthings. Or if they are craftsmen already, wewill try to identify companies where theycan buy the products from.
“The beauty of this project is that everysingle person in every single communitywill have an opportunity to get work andgovernment pays them to do that as well.
“But we will not be taking someone fromNomzamo to Samora Machel, it does notwork that way. It has got to be the peoplein the community, so that they can enrichthemselves.”
The team carried out numerous tests to ensure that the paint used to fireproof informaldwellings does its job properly. PHOTO: JUSTIN SULLIVAN

Subcouncil turnseducare downEARL HAUPT

Residents of Bamford Close in Crawfordhave had their voices heard after an ap-
plication for an early childhood develop-ment (ECD) centre in the area was refusedby subcouncil 17.An application for the rezoning of 5 Bam-
ford Close was brought by Estelle Fortuin, whereby the 363cm2 erf would be trans-formed into an ECD centre to accommodate35 children. However, during Thursday’s subcouncil
meeting at the Dulcie September civic cen-tre in Athlone, the subcouncil made the de-cision to follow the recommendation of Ma-gedien Davids, councillor for ward 48, torefuse Fortuin’s application.Fortuin had hoped to open the centre aft-
er gaining experience abroad in the UnitedStates and New Zealand. She had hoped to provide a programme
for childrenwith awide range of education-al experiences between 07:00 and 18:00 dur-ing the week. The application also madeprovision for a small parking area to allevi-ate any concerns related to traffic conges-tion.However, the application was met with
disdain as the Bamford Residents’ Associa-tion filed a petition objecting to the applica-tion.The overriding reason for the objection
was to keepBamfordClose accessible to res-idents as well as to maintain the peacefuland tranquil environment it currently en-joys.Subcouncil 17 cited that the application
for the ECD centre in Bamford Close “doesnot comply with the requirements for alarge scale ECD centre in terms of the ECDpolicy”.Another reason for refusal of the applica-
tion was that the development of the estab-lishment would bring an increase in thenoise levels in the quiet street, while thefact that it would be situated in a cul-de-sacwould only add to traffic congestion.Fortuin would have been able to have an
application for a small-scale ECD centregranted if she had reduced the number ofchildren to cater forwhile also opting to liveat the property herself while running thecentre.“If the facility reduced its number to 34
children, compliance with the small-scaleECD requirements, in terms of the ECD pol-icy, is also not possible due to the lack ofa residential component.”

Debut launches in LansdowneRetreat singer Rea will be
launching her debut mix tape atGemini Lounge in Lansdowne onThursday.
Produced by Damian Romanfrom Crybaby Entertainment, Theaudition features a selection of cov-er songs and original music thatshowcase the 19-year-old’s vocalabilities and persona as an artist.
Her music has been described asan urban, neo-soulish sound witha pop edge to it, which is not sur-prising considering her influencesrange from the likes of Anita Bak-er, Regina Belle and Bebe Winansto Tori Kelly and Jhene Aiko.
Born into a very musical family,Rea was just six when she startedperforming. Her father was a full-time musician who often let her tagalong to shows, while her mother
was a vocalist for the gospel groupNew Birth.
Her parents played a big role inencouraging her to pursue her mu-sical dream.
Although she’s been approachedby other producers and artistswanting her to collaborate on pro-jects, Rea was never keen on re-cording until she came acrossDamian on Facebook.
She sent him a voice clip andDamian was so impressed he set upa meeting to see how they couldwork together.
The result is Rea’s nine-track de-but release The audition.
Since recording her work, Dami-an has also taken on the role ofRea’s music manager. Togetherthey plan to release 8 to 10 mix ta-pes while Rea works on defining
her own original style. Each mix tape will be released
with five music videos, which willbe loaded onto a number of differ-ent online platforms to try and getas much exposure as possible.
Her launch on Thursday will al-so be filmed. She’ll be joined on thenight by a full band, opening actProtégé (a boy band) and MC BenCaesar. Guests will also be able towatch Rea’s promotional video anda video biography, while Damianwill be giving a beat-making dem-onstration.
The evening, which starts at21:00, will include lucky drawswith prizes to the value of R1000.V Tickets cost R100 each. Call 076 5080382 for bookings or more information.Visit the REA page on Facebook for moreinformation on Rea and her music.

During the recent student protests, much has been saidabout privilege, especially white privilege.
We are so comfortable with the concept of “underprivi-leged”, but the very mention of privilege has us blockingour ears.
Privilege is not only white; it is the black student whotweets and tells her fellows they should study at UWC in-stead of UCT if they don’t have money. Privilege is not onlywealth; it is being able to comfortably afford to feed yourfamily. Privilege is not only ignorance; it is the politicianwho earns enough to pay back several students loans.
Privilege does not mean you did not work hard for whatyou have. Privilege does not mean you did not face hardtimes. Privilege does not mean you have to give what youhave to someone else.
Privilege means you were afforded opportunities thatsomeone else was not – either through your race, wealthor affiliations. It is not measured in comparison to whatthose with the most have, rather to what those with the leasthave. It is as simple as being schooled in your mothertongue.
You do not have to feel guilty or defensive over your privi-lege. You have to acknowledge it.
What you are acknowledging is that another person’s ex-perience is valid and important, even though it is differentfrom yours. You cannot make assumptions about their ex-perience based on your life; even more so when comingfrom a radically different background. This includes notpassing comments to say “poor people are lazy” or how inyour day things were worse. These statements attempt toreduce the value of another’s experience.
Once you have acknowledged your privilege, it falls toyou to use it to make changes. Use your influence to makeeconomic and legislative changes. Stand supportive withthose who are fighting for equal opportunities. Share yourwealth and opportunities with those who do not, and maynever, have access to them.
With privilege comes responsibility.
Student protestsleave questionsThe last few days have been a hectic onefor one and all living in or visitingSouth Africa as university students tookto the campuses, the streets, the gates ofparliament and almost to the front doorof the Union buildings.
We must give credit to our mediacrews risking life, limb, liberty andproperty in bringing us the events thatat stages developed from peacefulness toviolence.
As events unfolded there must bequestions asked, but the big questionsare: Who is going to ask these questionsand who is going to answer them?
Why did student leaders not identifythemselves and their status in the mediaand then inform those in power of thepurpose of their protest and what theyexpect in response?
Why did our minister of highereducation not address the students inperson and respond or rather make acommitment to respond to the studentsdemands?
Why were the police officers on theground not interviewed to state whattheir function was in terms of illegalgatherings and explain why they wereexecuting actions as they unfolded?
Why did our president and the studentleaders, the ministers and the universityheads not meet straight after the minis-ter of finance’s speech on Thursday to
prepare themselves for the Fridaygathering of students at the Unionbuildings?
Why then, in relation to this, did ittake so long to address the studentswhile the long waiting period onlyfuelled and heightened tensions?
Why did the police not take thenecessary action when rocks and stoneswere thrown at them and journalists, asthis is a criminal act and could have ledto death and serious bodily harm? Or isthis the new method to deal with violentprotest, dodging and diving the missles?
Why did the elected student leadersnot come to the fore and condemn theacts of violence and distance themselvesfrom these who were perpetratingcriminal acts?
Why did the government take theirtime and at leisure responded to thequestions raised by the students?
And my final question: Why were ouropposition politicians so silent andinvisible in the whole matter? This issueof national importance to students andall South Africans could have been dealtwith at the genesis stages and taken allthat has happened and one answersthese questions then there is a finalcritical question: What is the wayforward from the lessons identified?

Just minutes to clean up rubbishWhat is the problem with residents who, after their bins have been emptied, ignore the rubbish which has been leftbehind and littering the pavements afterthe homeless people have ravaged theirbins?
Yes, I realise it is not the residentswho put it there, but surely we shouldall have enough pride in our communityto pick it up and put it back in our bins?
The dustbin men do not have time toclean up as they move down the street, yet it only takes a few minutes forhomeowners to do so.
Just how many people take the time toclean out their dirty bins? I so oftenpass many bins which are filthy andvery unhygienic.

City is sorryfor vehiclelicence delayThe letter “Don’t ‘improve’ it break it”(20 October) refers: We apologise for anyinconvenience that has been caused.
The problem did not arise in the Citycouncil processes. The challenges thathave arisen from the transfer of theelectronic national administration trafficinformation system (eNaTIS) between thenational department of transport and theroad traffic management centre (RTMC)have affected renewal notices across thecountry and continue to do so.
As a courtesy, the RTMC, which is anational agency, posts renewal noticesabout six weeks before car licencerenewals are due, but it has always beenthe duty of the car owner to renew thelicence before it expires.
Municipalities implement the carregistration and licensing function onbehalf of provincial governments. Assuch, the City is a registering authorityon behalf of the Western Cape govern-ment and as soon as we were informedthat no renewal notices had been postedby the RTMC, we immediately startedputting in place plans.
We have, as timeously as possible, beencommunicating through a broad spec-trum of media over the past weeks, haveincreased our capacity for car registra-tions online, have enhanced signage atour customer offices and are in commu-nication with senior provincial govern-ment management to obtain the necessa-ry authority from the department oftransport to extend the 21-day graceperiod which applies to licence renewals.
The situation is being monitored and, where necessary, we will allocate stafffrom other offices to the busier offices.
We would like to again emphasise thatmotorists whose licence discs will expireon 31 October and are renewable by 21November will also not be receivingrenewal notices.

Golf day tosupport sports
Play Sport4Life (PS4L) will be hosting itsfirst charity golf day on 20 Novemberto raise funds for community sport pro-
jects in the Kensington, Factreton and Mait-land areas.
The event will be held at the Mowbray GolfClub, with PS4L still finalising and wrap-ping up negotiations with a few South Afri-can sports personalities to support the orga-nisation on the day.
A number of major sponsors have alsojoined the party, namely FNB, Engen andStreamline Agencies as major sponsors andthe many prizes on offer will include golfingand sports equipment.
Miles October, head of PS4L, says the orga-nisation has gone ahead in leaps and boundssince it started last year.
“It has been an eventful first year forPS4L, but we are just getting started,” hesaid.
“Thus far, we have made great strides inbringing the local communities together andforging new friendships through our multi-faceted sports programmes and initiativesin the Kensington, Factreton and Maitlandareas.
“PS4L has grown tremendously as an NPOsince we were established in 2014. Our soc-cer and cricket tournament for juniors inthe Factreton area was an unqualified suc-
cess. We had over 1000 kids from the areaparticipating.
“But there is a mountain of work to bedone if we want to achieve our objectives inthe community.
“However, nothing comes without a cost. There are overheads involved in organisingour community events and we are no differ-ent from other NPOs – we need support. ThePS4L golf day will help us help the kids inthe community.”
Community projectsThe focus of the organisation at this stage
is the Kensington, Factreton and Winder-mere areas, but it plans to launch communi-ty projects elsewhere in areas of needaround Cape Town.
In addition to the major sponsorships, they have also secured a number of othercorporates and individuals to sponsor ahole, prizes and enter a team.
“The Mowbray course is one of the mostpopular and scenic courses in the Peninsula. It will make for a great day for a great cause. The event will culminate with a prize-givingceremony and auction at the 19th hole,” Oc-tober said.V Contact Nazlie Dollie on 071 3866 573 or [email protected] if you would like more informationabout how to enter a team to participate.

The City of Cape Town’s council will consid-er a recommendation made by its mayoralcommittee to host the HSBC World SevensSeries at the Cape Town Stadium.
Tickets for the event are already on sale, with the final day of the two-day event al-ready sold out, but the City and the SouthAfrican Rugby Union (Saru) were yet to ironout the final details for the December event.
The mayoral committee has recommend-ed that the council note the cash donationmade by the Western Cape government toSaru as well as to note their waivering of allcosts related to their emergency medical ser-vices.
It was also recommended that council con-sider waiving the stadium costs.
The City has also been asked to open thefan walk as part of the transport plan for thetwo days.
“I look forward to a positive outcome inthe final approval process by council.
“This is a popular rugby series and theCity of Cape Town is proud to be chosen asthe host city to help elevate the status of theseries. We anticipate that the event will at-tract a huge contingent of international me-dia which will further help to promote thestatus of Cape Town as an events destinationof choice,” said Garreth Bloor, mayoral com-mittee member for tourism, events and eco-nomic development.
The South African leg of the World SevensSeries takes place on 12 and 13 December.

Normies softball club showed no fearwhen it took on St Martins in a tightlycontested match at Turfhall Stadium
in Athlone on Saturday. The newcomers, whowere promoted from
major league to super league division de-spite ending third last season, started on ahigh note and proved to be no walk-over, re-gardless of their forfeit against Falcons lastweek due to a shortage of players. With a shaky start by St Martins they
managed to only score one run, leaving run-ners on base unable to score. This allowed their opponents to equalise
early with both teams scoring one run each. The second innings was not much differ-
ent in terms of scoring. St Martins took thelead by one run and kept Normies scorelesswith thehelp of their pitcherShanineGroep-ies.The score remained close with Normies
scoring in the third innings, but St Martinswere still leading and got their team to scoretwo runs earlier in the third innings, takingthe score to 4-2.During the fourth innings, Normies made
the change in pitchers with Shamiera Ry-lands who relieved Amy Minnies and keptSt Martins scoreless yet again. This produced a fighting spirit in the new-
comers, who then scored another run, mak-ing it 4-3. They continued fighting to keep StMartins scoreless. The Bishop Lavis side, whose nerves were
shot, made error after error and concededthree runs, giving Normies an opportunityto take the lead. But the battle was far from over as StMar-
tins redeemed themselves, scoring four runsin their last turn at bat, giving away no runsto their opponents. The final score was 8-6 with St Martins
coming out victorious. In other results, Falcons defeated VOB
with a convincing 11-0 victory, while Glen-thorn As whipped Westridge Yankees 20-1.
