PHOTO: CHEVON BOOYSEN LANSDOWNE Traffic troubles CHEVON BOOYSEN @ChevonBooysen A troublesome traffic intersection in Lansdowne will hopefully soon get a set of traffic lights if residents’ pleas are heard. The intersection at Woodbury and Race- course roads has long been a worry for mo- torists and residents after accidents at these roads. A recent accident spurred residents’ pleas for traffic lights at the intersection. One resident, who did not want to be named, says the need for the traffic light should not be considered lightly. “It is indeed a necessity for the area. Even though people slow down for the speeding cameras a few metres away, there are still accidents happening here that can be avoid- ed. This can be done if traffic lights are put up,” she says. The woman says the recent accident where a pedestrian was knocked down at the intersection is also worrying. “People are walking home at night some times when they get back from work and use train as a method of transport. And because it’s getting dark sooner now, pedestrians are at risk because of low visibility,” she says. The woman adds despite speed cameras fixed just over 100m away from the intersec- tion, it does not help much. “People will slow down right before the speeding camera and then speed up again after they have passed it. It is very dangerous,” she says. Lansdowne police spokesperson Sergeant Nkululeko Mnyaka confirms a pedestrian was knocked on Tuesday 3 May at 19:00. He adds the woman was taken to Groote Schuur Hospital for medical attention. “The driver was charged for reckless and negli- gent driving. No arrests have been made.” Ward councillor Anthea Green says: “The traffic lights are essentially on the cards. However, nothing has yet been confirmed.” Mayco member for transport Brett Herron explains an internal approval process will have to take place for the traffic lights to ma- terialise. “The internal approval process is as fol- lows: after completion of a conceptual pro- posal by the engineer, the proposal then needs to be presented to a technical review committee for consideration. This would not, however, imply automatic approval,” Herron says. He adds at the committee meeting held on Wednesday 4 May, various queries and con- cerns were raised, necessitating further in- vestigation relating to this approval. “Approval was therefore not granted. The committee will sit again at the end of May. If the further investigations are completed by then, the revised proposals will be sub- mitted for reconsideration,” Herron ex- plains. Asked what are the main concerns at the intersection, Herron confirms that motor- ists have reported “difficulty crossing the in- tersection and there is a risk of collisions oc- curring.” V Continued on page 2.

Herron says the first application for trafficlights at the specific intersection was firstreceived during July 2013.“The first request was submitted in July2013 and another request in October 2015,motivated on the grounds of difficulty expe-rienced accessing this road.”“In addition, final approval is ultimatelygranted by the technical committee. Onceapproved, projects are prioritised in termsof safety and delay considerations and theavailable funding for the financial year,” heexplains.Due to the approval not having been con-firmed yet, Herron says the budget for thetraffic lights will “depend on the solutionthat is ultimately considered”.

“The cost is very much dependent on thesolution that is ultimately considered. Byway of example, depending on the intersec-tion layout, signalisation of an existing in-tersection can cost anything from R650 000to R850 000. This would exclude larger civilworks suchas the additionof turning lanes,”Herron says.“Further feedback can be provided oncethe investigation has been completed and fi-nal input from the technical committee hasbeen received. Solutions other than signalsmay be deemed appropriate at this intersec-tion – it is necessary to consider current aswell as future needs, taking broader roadnetwork impacts into account,” Herron con-cludes.

Williams flies SA flagin MalaysiaQari Gaarieth Williams has flown the flagfor SouthAfrica at the International Al-Qur-an Recital andMemorising Assembly in Ku-ala Lumpur last week. For more than a half century, Malaysiahas been the host of the world’s oldest AlQuran recital assembly. The 2016 event welcomed the 58th editionof the mega event, which gathers interna-tionally renowned reciters toKuala Lumpurevery year.Williams has won the South African Na-tional Qirah competition in both 2005 and2008, and has also participated in interna-tional Quran competitions in both Iran andEgypt.“All praise is due toAllah,my parents, myteachers and my family who supports me inall my endeavours. I amhonoured and excit-ed to participate in this illustrious eventwhich is the oldest and biggest event of itskind in the world,” says Williams.A prerequisite for this particular Malay-sian competition is to apply the Quran me-lodies known as maqamaat in a 10-minute,slow-paced, rhythmic andmelodious recital. All rules of tajweed must be adhered to andjudges also look at where the reciter stopsand continueswithin verses, so as to not dis-tort itsmeaning. TheQuran portion to be re-cited is given to the reciter on the same daythat he/she is due to recite it in public. Prep-aration time therefore is minimal.“The countries who have consistentlywon this competition over the years since itsinception are Malaysia, Indonesia, Egyptand Iran. I humbly request dua fromall, thatAllah grants me the strength to representour country to the best of my ability, InshaAllah,” adds Williams.Williams started reciting the Quran at avery young age; having as his first Quranteacher Sheikh Ganief Moos of Wynberg. He later graduated fromDarul UloomZak-ariya in Johannesburg where he completedhis hifth under Hafith Farooq Mansoor Sa-hib who currently heads up the Hifth Schoolat Darul Uloom Zakariya.

At the age of 16, shortly after his returnfrom Johannesburg, young Williams’ fa-ther, NaseemWilliams, his role model, dieddue to sudden illness.Williams’ mother, who was very dear tohis heart and alwaysmotivated him to learnQuran, passed away in 2013.He taught hifth and led Taraweeh prayersfor a number of years at Surrey Estate Mas-jid under the guidance of Sheikh IrfaanAbrahams. Thereafter he studied tajweedand mastered the maqamaat guided bySheikh Ismail Londt. In 2008 he was invited to lead Taraweehprayers in Mauritius and in Turkey in 2014.He furthered his tertiary studies andholds a degree in architecture. GROENVLEI HIGH

Dream team raises fundsCHEVON BOOYSEN

@ChevonBooysen

A 12 hour dance marathon all in the nameof raising awareness for cancer.

And in just three months of fundraisingfor their social outreach project (SunflowerFund) and their school Legacy Project, theGroenvlei High matriculants managed toraise R30 000, putting them in full reach oftheir target to raise R40 000 by October laterthis year.

The 12 hour danceathon was hosted at theschool hall on Friday evening.

The initiative to raise awareness startedat the school three years ago where theGrade 12 class each year hosts fundraisingevents and initiatives to hand over to theadopted cause and for them to raise moneyfor their school’s Legacy Project.

Chantel Dennis, head girl at GroenvleiHigh says the third instalment of this fun-draising initiative had them all excited.“We expected about 500 people to attend thedance marathon and so far about 400 havealready gone through the door. We are confi-dent the event will be a success,” Dennissaid on the night.

Ijaaz Stellenboom, head boy, says theyhave been receiving great support fromtheir educators as well.

“They have been at all our meetings forpreparations and they all came out tonightto help at the dance marathon. They havebeen amazing,” Stellenboom says.

“At the end of the day, we’re helping bene-ficiaries to get onto the Sunflower Fund do-nor registry. Our fundraising initiative forboth projects included selling tickets for the

danceathon at R40 a ticket. Advertising wasdone by word of mouth and through theschool. We started selling our tickets abouttwo weeks ago. All proceeds will be split be-tween the school Legacy Project and theSunflower Fund,” Stellenboom explains.

Ganiefa Jones, a Grade 12 pupil servingon the planning committee for the initia-tive, says they are proud to be a part of suchan initiative.

“The danceathon is to raise money forpeople suffering from Leukaemia and wewant people to join the donor registry. Itcosts R2000 to get on to the register so wewant to essentially help people who cannotfund themselves to get onto the register. Weare funding two projects. Our other is theschool Legacy Project,” she says.

Jones says this years matriculants haveoutdone themselves.

“Not to brag, but this is the best one sofar. We have done so well with raising themost money so far and arranging this in theleast amount of time.

“What makes this year’s matriculants soamazing is that this year, it took us threemonths to raise R21 000 and the previousyear it took the matriculants a year to raiseR19 000. Determination is our secret thisyear,” she says.

The proud and determined matriculantssays their slogan this year is Team: Togeth-er Everyone Achieves More.

“The initial initiative started during 2014and they challenged the 2015 matriculantsto beat them. And we have then been chal-lenged by the 2015 matriculants who told usto beat them. But, we didn’t come in withthe mindset to beat the previous year’s ma-

triculants. We came in with the mindsetthat we have to beat ourselves and I thinkwe have done exactly that,” Jones beams.

Another matriculant Kelly Oliver saysthe experience has geared them up for theirfuture.

“Essentially we are ploughing back intoour community. We need to learn responsi-bility and need to learn how to work togeth-er especially for a good cause and these pro-jects are doing just that. It’s a huge bonusfor us to learn these skills before we actuallyleave school. We know we have contributedtowards the upliftment of our school and toraise awareness for cancer patients,” Oliversays.

Grade head, Godfrey Hendricks, says allthe money raised will be used towards thematrics Outreach Project and their LegacyProject.

“The money will be divided between thetwo beneficiaries. The Sunflower Fund isthe Outreach beneficiary and the school isthe Legacy Project beneficiary. The matricsdecide how the money for the Legacy projectshould be used by the school. The purposefor this is for them to make positive and tan-gible contribution to the improvement ofthe school for learners to benefit,” Hen-dricks says.

He adds the pupils will continue raisingfund until they reach their target.

“Once they reach their target, the matric-ulants will decide if they will terminate orcontinue fundraising efforts. A handover tothe Sunflower Fund should take place in Oc-tober, however, it appears as though the tar-get will be reached long before then,” Hen-dricks says.

MANENBERG

Women pave way for projectA group of women in Manenberg are play-

ing an integral role behind the scenes toensure that the construction of 587 subsi-dised units goes ahead without a hitch. The City of Cape Town says the Manen-

berg infill housing project is expected tocommence soon and it is expected to takearound three years to complete. The progress of the project will, however,

depend strongly on the support from thecommunity and the innovative and deter-mined approaches deployed in seeing the

project through.“This area is incrediblyvolatile, largely as

a result of the high levels of gangsterism anddrug-related crime,” says Benedicta vanMinnen, the City’s mayoral committeemember for human settlements.“It is therefore not just a simple task of

building subsidised units. We are fullyaware that we will face some hardships anduphill battles along the way because of thevolatility of this area but we will not be de-terred.”

She says that additional measures will beput in place, including the employment of alocal neighbourhood watch, and provisionhas been made for the erection of perimeterfencing in an effort to secure the site.“We are engaging with local leaders in the

area in an attempt tomobilise the communi-ty behind the project. Success will only beachieved if we work together. One of our greatest advantages going for-

wardwill alsobe the strong leadershipof ourall-female project steering committee andwe thank them for the role that they haveplayed already,” says Van Minnen.

Another unique feature of this project, which aims to drive community ownership,is the mural initiative. Unemployed youthsare participating in a mosaic art trainingproject which is currently under way. This four-month training project aims to

provide unemployed youthwith an opportu-nity to learn a skill that they can use to cre-ate opportunities for themselves. The large-scale murals will eventually be

applied to the housing units that face ontoGovan Mbeki Drive. The murals celebrate the heritage of Ma-

nenberg.

An all-women project steering committee is paving the way for the Manenberg infill housingproject to commence in the near future.

All dressed up,nowhere to goSAMANTHA LEE

“All dressed up and nowhere to go” – acommon phrase that many of us mayhave heard at least once or twicethroughout our lives.

A phrase that got me thinking aboutdisappointment.

Why? You may ask with an elementof confusion.

Well it started with a few new outfits, gorgeous shoes and two tickets to a tripanticipated for more than a year.

You get all dressed up, you get excitedand then, boom your plans get can-celled. Then you sit: All dressed up withnowhere to go.

But on that note, where did thisphrase come from and why is it so loose-ly used?

My grandmother said something in-teresting to me once that has stuck withme ever since. She said: “Don’t wearyour best clothes in the during the weekbecause you will never look good whenyou go out.”

But who do we dress for?Ourselves? Our partners? Our

friends? or for the average joe on thestreet?

Some, like myself, dress according totheir mood. When I don’t feel like put-ting any effort in a jeans or track pantswork fine. But when I feel like puttingon a nice dress, I’m sure people look atme and think, “Why is she so dressed

up? where is she going?”.It makes me wonder why there is an

accepted notion that you are not allowedto look good no matter the occasion.

I suppose it also has to fit within dresscode confines, but even so, who set thestandard for what we should dress likeand when we are allowed to wear niceclothing?

The same goes for the words mygrandmother spoke. Those are idealsthat have been imprinted in the mind-sets of generations while growing up.

I say it is time to change that. Weshould have the freedom to dress theway we feel.

As a fashion lover, I find clothing asan expression of moods, feelings andemotion so why should you not want touse it as an outlet to show the world whoyou are.

Besides, dressing well makes you feelgood and gives you confidence.

So who are these people that don’twant us to be the best versions of our-selves.

For whatever reason you are dressedup ladies and gents, rock your look.Even if you have nowhere to go.

But if you are home and all dressedup, get up, make some plans and showthat look off. If not and you just wantto look good in front of the TV, no judge-ment.

But remember, good clothing andgood style is made to be admired.

‘We partied’til midnight’Oh behalf of my mother and myself, Iwould like to thank People’s Post for themost amazing Mother’s Day concert atGrand West on Saturday night.

I treated my mom to the concert andwe expected to be there for about twohours max. Well, that hall reverberatedfor four hours, it bounced, it rocked, itraised the roof, all while sitting in yourseat – we were in constant rockingmotion, our seats were moving all thetime.

My mom is 84-years-old and we partied’til midnight and so enjoyed the People’sPost concert. The whole night my momjust beamed, laughed with joy, clappedher hands, tapped her feet. What afantastic concert, what a responsiveaudience, what talented and beautifulSouth African women we listened to, andto top it all, the most incredible band –what a super-duper night it was. Thankyou for making our Mother’s Day outing/night so special.

A man has been arrested for the pos-session of an unlicensed firearm andammunition in Manenberg on Thurs-day 5 May.

The 23-year-old suspect was cor-nered by police deployed within the ar-ea as part of extra deployment after itwas deemed that he was acting suspi-ciously in the early hours of Thursdaymorning. The suspect initially ran aft-er police approached him as it ap-peared he was holding a firearm in hishand concealed in the front of hispants.

VYGIESKRAAL

City gets ready for winterThe City of Cape Town has set the wheels

in motion for their winter readinessplan to mitigate the impact of adverseweather conditions prevalent between Mayand September.

The City’s executive mayor, Patricia deLille, Mayoral committee members andCity officials visited a stormwater canal inVygieskraal on Thursday last week to high-light how illegal dumping adds an unneces-sary strain on infrastructure and has an ad-verse effect on vulnerable communitiesand the City’s flood mitigation measures.

The City spends more than R350m toclear illegally dumped waste across the citywhich has various negative impacts on res-idents and the environment.

Each year, in preparing for the rainy sea-son, a multi-departmental team in the Citycompile a winter readiness plan. “As a well-run and caring City, we prioritise opera-tions and provide relief aid to our most vul-nerable communities,” states De Lille.

In order to ensure that the City respondsas effectively and as swiftly as possible, ateam led by the City’s Disaster Risk Man-agement (DRM) Centre coordinates themulti-faceted winter readiness plan, shesays. “Our winter readiness measures in-clude ongoing education and awareness ininformal settlements to educate residents onhow to minimise the risk of flooding.”

The DRM Centre has made arrangementswith disaster relief partners (non-govern-mental organisations) who can provide hu-manitarian aid to people in distress and dis-comfort as a result of flooding and stormdamage. However, each year, the City alsoreports that there are still too many caseswhen illegal dumping caused by residentsand companies leads to clogging of and dam-age to the stormwater infrastructure net-work. This affects the ability of the systemto drain rain water and often leads to flood-ing, which affects vulnerable communities.

People’s Post reported earlier this yearthat the Blomvlei canal, which flowsthrough Vygieskraal, was at the centre of amajor stink in January after being cloggedup with excess pollution during the festiveperiod (“City to unmask stench”, 26 Janu-ary).

“For several years, I have been calling onresidents to work with us to stop illegaldumping while we have rolled out cam-paigns to educate residents about the devas-tating and far-reaching impact that illegaldumping has on our critical infrastructureand especially on communities and the envi-ronment,” says De Lille.

She has also called on residents to reportblockages, illegal dumping and perpetra-tors, while the City has also increased the

penalties to deter this hazardous and illegalact. “Today (Thursday) we visited one of theillegal dumping hot spots, the canal next tothe Vygieskraal informal settlement, whichis repeatedly used as a dumping ground andwhere the City is spending thousands ofrands to clear the canal and culverts eachweek.”

Apart from clearing the stormwater net-work, the City says that their winter readi-ness plan details how the various depart-ments will cooperate and liaise with eachother to deal with eventualities and possibleflood damage during the wet winter season.

The City has identified 34 high-risk areasand has prioritised these areas, which in-clude informal settlements in Philippi, Gu-gulethu and Strand.

Executive mayor of the City of Cape Town Patricia de Lille visited Vygieskraal last week to shedlight on the City’s winter readiness programme.

It has been quite a magical andheart-warming start to the sea-son for Strandfontein High with

amatch-winning performance thathad the partisan crowd on edge inthe Mr. Price Foundation HighSchools Soccer League. The growing pains of the team,

affectionately known as the “SeaRobbers”, saw them finish at thebottom of the 2015 league champi-onship.But the struggles of the past did

not impede on the progress of theStrandfontein side. The rejuvenated Strandfontein

side caused the biggest upset of theopening round by sending Cloetes-villeHigh, the defending and three-time league champions (2008, 2009and 2015) crashing to a 2-1 defeat. With an excellent opportunity to

redeem themselves under newcoach Jason Alexander, who waspart of the playing team of last sea-son’s squad, and team manager,Mano Adams, the lads in the blueand white dished up good attack-ing, scientific football thatthroughout the game pressurisedthe Stellenbosch side –much to thedelight of the very vocal and noisySea Robbers fans. However, Chris Joubert’s Cloet-

esville-side staved off early pres-sure. Scott Williams, in the no.7jersey, constantly troubled a verynervous Dean Gordon in goal.Itwas thehome side, Cloetesville

High, that minutes before half-time surged 1-0 ahead through awell execution pin-point goal, inwhich the team strung seven pass-es together, before Ian Floris land-ed it safely into the back of the net.But after the change-over the

schoolboys from StrandfonteinHigh, which still has 75% of lastseasons’ squad, started to gel andhad Cloetesville on the back foot-ball.Like a well oil machine the Sea

Robbers picked off the oppositionwith Andile Dick first scoring theequaliser (1-1). With ten minutesremaining on the clock the ever-alert and influential Scott Willi-ams unleashed a powerful snap-shoot that Dean Gordon could nothold and parried it into the back ofthe net.Floris’ match-winning goal prac-

tically sent the crowd into a joyouscelebration. Chris Joubert and hisCloetesville side will be quick toadmit they were no way near theirbest and that Alexander’s Strand-fontein side fully deserve theirmo-rale boosting 2-1 victory.Beacon Hill triumph over

Oval North

Last year’s league runners-up,Beacon Hill High, topped the logafter the opening round followingtheir 3-1 triumph against arch-ri-vals Oval North High. However, they could find the go-

ing much tougher against a stub-born and defensive RocklandsHigh side, who shared the points(1-1) with Lentegeur on Saturday.Beacon Hill was the only side to

draw home that won their gamewhile six of the other teams, whichdrew away, picked up maximumpoints.Nevertheless, Beacon Hill held a

2-1 lead at the breakwithAzola Bil-ly scoringabraceandwithCurwenBarry finding the target for OvalNorth before Keith October addedthe third for good measure to se-cure three valuable points.Mondale rise to the occasionMondale High – the 2012 and 2013

champions – showed glimpses ofthe side that wiped out all opposi-tion for two consecutive seasonsand had their long-time educatorand coach – since the introductionof the league in 2004 – Nigel Crowiesmiling from ear to ear.Though the Mondale side beat a

pluckyAloeHigh 2-0, it was a victo-ry that Riyaaz Nell must be accred-ited with since it was his two-goaltonic that led the boys in the navyblue and gold jerseys on their wayto an emphatic 2-0 win.Westridge edge out PrincetonWith the return of Ismail Gasno-

la – the coach that helped West-ridge High to win their secondleague title in 2010 after being inau-gural champs in 2004 – the schoolside in maroon and white didenough with some quality playingmethods to conquer PrincetonHigh 1-0 in a quite an evenly bal-anced encounter.Though Charles Uys’s Princeton

side, who won back-to-back leaguechampionships in 2005 and 2006,should have scored twice in thefirst half through their industriousstrikers Sayeed Mentoor and ColeHartzenberg, they always fellshort.Other results: Tafelsig High 2,

Glendale High 1; Cedar High 2,Spine Road 0; Portland High 2,Woodlands High 1; Lentegeur High1, Rocklands High 1.Upcoming fixtures to be played

on Saturday 14 May at 09:00: Bea-con Hill High vs Rocklands High,Cloetesville High vs Cedar High,Glendale High vs Spine RoadHigh,Oval North High vs Aloe High.At10:15:MondaleHigh vsTafel-

Steenberg off to national playoffsA highly motivated Steenberg United

will be packing their bags for a trip tothe City of Roses to compete for promo-

tion to the National First Division (NFD).The week-long national play-offs take

place from Monday 6 to Sunday 12 June inBloemfontein. This comes after Mike Lukukhuene’s

Steenberg chargers, who seemed dead andburied after being 1-0 down, turned this ex-citing and absorbing game from the jaws ofdefeat to score twice with the decisivematch-winning goal coming in the referees’added time.Steenberg were crowned Safa Western

Cape Regional ABC Motsepe League cham-pions on thebackof this unbelievable 2-1 vic-tory against Crystal Palace at theGreensAs-troturf sports complex inManenberg on Sat-urday.It must be acknowledged that the referee

Masixolo Bambiso from George in full viewof match commissioner and likeable WorldCup accredited FIFA referee JeromeDamonwas on the button and handled this needlein a haystack high pressure encounter bril-liantly.The valuable three points enabled Steen-

bergUnited to consolidate their top of the logposition and end the 2015/2016 season on 66points from 30 matches – one point ahead ofdefending champions Glendene United.Last season Glendene United also won the

league championshipbyadifference of a sin-gle point, pipping new champions SteenbergUnited, who then had to be content with thebridesmaid tag. This time round it is owner Shaffie Mow-

zer’sGlendene side that had to bite the bulleteven though they too won their away game1-0 against TheMagic at Royal Road inMait-

land on Saturday. The only goal scored in the 70th minute

through Madkane Siyambonga broughtmuch relief and a flicker of hope for Glende-ne United at the time Crystal Palace werestill leading Steenberg United 1-0 in Manen-

berg. However, with all eyes focused on the

clash between Steenberg United and CrystalPalace in which the home side scoredthrough Amir Davids to hold a slender 1-0leadandheld ondesperately for dear life, but

alas SteenbergUnited found the equaliser inthe 84th minute with a long free kick from50m out through Isma-iel Stanfield and thenin referee’s added optional time Edmund Pe-tersen following a goalmouth melee from acorner kick scored the match winner thatsend the crowd into a frenzy of non-stop joy-ous celebration songs.“It was an unbelievably great game and

thoughwe cameback strongly to turn thingsaround in our favour. I think we deserve towin the league this time round as we workhard all season for league cup success,” saysskipper Marawaan Bantam.Bantam also played for Cape Town All

Stars two seasons before when the All Starsteam under coach Dylan Deane won the re-gional league and promotion to the NFD.A pretty optimistic and equally confident

upbeat Bantam feels this Steenberg squad isloaded with experience and has a blend oftop quality players that is prepared to fightto the bitter end and is a side that has beentogether for two seasons with coach MikeLukukhuene, an experienced coach who al-so ledChippaUnited, the Philippi-based sideto the league title and subsequentlywonpro-motion to the first division pro ranks.“Therefore we are confident of holding

our own. I’m not saying it is going to be easybut we will prepare well and put up a goodfight in the play-offs to gain promotion,”Bantam concludes. The full ABC Motsepe League results:
