SUMMER JACOBS

THERE seems to be light at the end of thetunnel for religious leader Imaam GasanMoos, as combined efforts from commu-nity leaders as well as Lansdowne resi-dents have helped raise more than R50000 for his medical expenses over thenext few months.

People’s Post previously reported on theImaam’s health challenge which began afterhe had kidney failure last year (“Supportneeded for ailing Imaam”, 20 March). A pleawas made to the public to support Moos withthe cost of his dialysis treatment.

People were asked to support an eat-and-treat on Friday 30 March at the Darul IslamHall in Greenhaven. Tickets were sold forR150 each and funds raised at the event willbe used to cover Moos’ medical expenses un-

til his medical aid becomes operational inSeptember. The community’s reaction to theImaam’s appeal has been positive, surpass-ing the expectations of the organisers of theeat-and-treat. More than R50 000 was raised, with a further R500 collected from the auc-tioning of a rakam (Islamic painting) whichwas bought by an anonymous donor wantingto help the Imaam Gasan Benefit Trust.

“We extend a huge thank you to everyonewho attended and donated. Without them, the night would not have been possible,”says Riedwan Kenny, chairman of theShukrul Mubeen madrassah.

Moos told People’s Post: “I appreciate eve-rything that has been done for me so far. When I was turned away from the provincialhospital I thought ‘Oh no, this is it’. I am sograteful to everyone for their help. I thankthe community for all they have done and Ithank everyone who attended the function.”

Dear reader,I hope you had a blessed, peaceful Easter

weekend. The year has rapidly rolled into April,

signalling the beginning of a new financialyear which I found myself heading into mi-nus more than R11 000 after I had investedin mechanical repairs to my trusted, ma-ture Volvo, and acquired an iPad andiPhone.

Cars and money aside, Inow know that I have welland truly arrived in theworld of gadgets – andthere is no turning back.

I currently own threecellphones, a (company)laptop, PC at home, and aniPad.

What else do I need?Resistant initially to

joining the now cool worldof 21st Century gadgetgeeks, I can’t imagine mylife of communicationwithout my BB, iPhone,iPad and other I’s still tocome.

Now, what’s the cardcalled that I need for myiPad... think it’s a micro-sim, right?

Whatever, I’ll findplace for it inmy light-weight Apple bag which from here on, ac-companies me everywhere and will formpart of my baggage.

Being a neat freak, slightly obsessive, packing for any trip is always an event, forme and the unfortunate few who are partofmyplans;whether theywant tobeornot.

I can envisage my luggage when I attendthe next MLW (Media Leaders at Work)training session: it will consist of a burgun-dy suitcase on wheels for my perfectly fold-ed clothes, matching bags for my toiletries, shoes and sportswear and a travel-friendlybag for my beloved gadgets.

I’m notorious for overpacking. In my fa-vour though, all the extra clothes I pack(usually six outfits for two days) have comein handy, even if mainly in the virtualrealm.

On one trip though, forewarned yieldeddividends; I could offer a colleague one of

my spare cardigans when the weatherchanged.

But, enough about me and more aboutour readers...

We published a cartoon last week that at-tracted comment from some readers, in-cluding Judy who wrote (slightly edited):“Dear Feroza, I’m not sure what this pic-ture is supposed to depict. This is our timeas Christians where we celebrate the cruci-

fixion of our Lord and Sav-iour Jesus Christ who diedand rose again to give useternal life and for this pic-ture to be put in this issueis totally inappropriate. Ifyou’re wanting to wishChristians a “Blessed East-er” then do so directly asyou haven’t done this in theentire paper.

“You could’ve used a pic-ture of a family on a wagonand horse, absolutely noneed to use a picture whichto me looks like Jesus on adonkey and three crosseson the hill.”

I replied to Judy as fol-lows: “Dear Judy, I hopeyou are well and that you

are having a Blessed Easter weekend. Many thanks for your email and valuedfeedback. The cartoon was not intended tooffend in any way. It depicts the mode oftransport used then for what is a reveredtime of year, as opposed to modern day. Itcontrasts the slower pace of life then, ver-sus the speed of life today.

“I regret that you feel offended. In no waywas the image aimed at offending as ourpublications have high regard for allfaiths. On page 2 of this week’s (3 April’s)People’s Post, I wished everyone a BlessedEaster (in my ConnectED column). I willcertainly make mention of your commentsin next week’s column.”

Till next time, go well!. ConnectED is a weekly column by Peo-

HAVE you wondered who the two bicyclepatrollers peddling down Kenwyn’sstreets are?

They are employed by the area’s residentsto help keep the neighbourhood free fromcrime and misconduct.

In an effort to put a crime prevention planinto place, the bicycle patrol regime was intro-duced to the area by the Kenwyn Ratepayers’and Civic Association, in conjunction with theKenwyn Safety and Security Association(Kraca/Kensasa), about six years ago.

The two male cyclists patrol the streets fromMonday to Friday from 07:00 to 18:00, all theway from Racecourse Road through to WettonRoad.

The chairperson of Kraca/Kensasa, MarkKleinschmidt, says that based on police statis-tics, since the inception of the bicycle patrols, the area’s crime has decreased.

“Working with the local neighbourhoodwatch, who takes over after the bicycle patrol-lers’ shift has ended, the patrols’ objective isto prevent crimes from happening,” he says.

Even though the two patrollers have beenkeeping an eye on the streets of Kenwyn forsix years already, the associations want to“amp up” the number of patrols in the area.

“Our main aim is to increase the number ofbicycle patrols to six or more.

“The two patrollers are paid from contribu-

tions from residents, and right now we don’thave enough funds to employ more,” saysKleinschmidt.

The organisation asks each household for acontribution of R40 a month which goes to-wards wages of bicycle patrollers and the asso-ciations’ basic expenses.

Of the 1 800 residents, approximately 150contribute on a regular basis.

“We have found that there is a tendency andmindset among residents that ‘everythingseems well’, and therefore it’s not necessaryfor them to contribute,” says Kleinschmidt. He adds that to raise awareness about the bicy-cle patrols, the two patrollers go door-to-doorto hand out information pamphlets to resi-dents.

The coordinator of thebicycle patrols,Doug-las Grace, says the patrols have had a positiveimpact on the safety and security of Kenwynresidents.

“The bicycle patrollers are doing well inkeeping an eye on the community. Their pres-ence on the road contributes a lot towards pre-venting crime in the area.

“So far, nothing of a serious nature has oc-curred while they are on patrol, but it wouldbe better if we could have more patrollersworking for the community – the more themerrier,” he says.

If anyone can sponsor the organisationswith bicycles or contribute towards monthlyexpenses, contact Mark Kleinschmidt on 082572 2562 or [email protected].

The aim of the flu campaign is to highlightthe need for vaccination before and duringthe flu season, and to ensure that availablevaccines are used.

Other preventative measures include:. Avoid close contact with people who are

SUMMER JACOBS

IT is a bitter reality and an unwelcome factthat when the petrol price goes up, so doeseverything else.

With the petrol price at an all time high, inflation is affecting South Africans in all

areas of their lives. Electricity prices, trainfare, taxi fare and bus fare all form part ofa long list of expenses raiding the consum-er’s ever shrinking pocket. People’s Posttook to the street to find out how people feltabout the increasing cost of living and howthey are dealing with it.

Beating the inflation blues

RIDICULOUS:“It’s absolutely ridiculous! As apensioner Ican hardlymanage theprice hikes. We like to goshopping andwe like to eatbut we can’tafford it anymore, so nowwe just do itless,” saysRachel Louwfrom Athlone.

ALTERNATIVES: “Idon’t think the government considersthe hard workingpeople who alreadyearn a small salarywhen they pushthings up. If thereis no avoiding inflation then why can’tthey come up witha plan to absorbsome of the financial strain, so thatit does not hit thepeople so hard,”says Cameron Elyfrom Mitchell’sPlain.

SKY HIGH:“The increasing prices offood is my biggest headache. I’m amother of ahealthy childwith a healthyappetite. Withfood prices skyhigh I can’teven afford totreat my littleone with luxuries,” says Ruqayah IbrahimfromLansdowne.

BATTLING: “We aspensioners havereceived a R60 increase in ourmonthly grantwhich I am grateful for, but it’s stillnot enough. I gotmy pension moneyon Tuesday and allI have left is R50and it’s not theend of the weekyet. What aboutthe rest of themonth?,” says Lona Baugaard (67)from Kewtown.

USELESS: “Myopinion countsfor zero because there’snothing wecan do aboutit. We areheading fordisaster. Inflation is going tosee more andmore peoplebeing unableto affordthings and it’sgoing to leadto major joblosses,” saysDale Caledonfrom Ottery, posing with little Mika.

LILLIAN AMOS

WITH the petrol price at an all timehigh, and Metrorail upping it’s fees, commuters are understandably con-cerned about a possible hike in taxifares.

Last week, petrol went up by 66 centsa litre in coastal areas, mak-ing it R11.59 a litre – the high-est since July 2008.

When People’s Post spoke tothe Western Cape Taxi Coun-cil chairperson, Vernon Bil-let, he declined to comment onthe matter but said that theywill discuss whether or not apossible fare hike is on thecards.

The South African Trans-port and Allied Workers’ Un-ion national spokesperson,Mamokgethi Rea Molopyane, says she is sure that taxi fees will in-crease. “It will definitely go up, it’s justamatter of time. If it happens, itwillmakeit difficult for the averageworkerbecause60 percent of their salary is already beingspent on transport. Now that amount willbe even bigger because of the Metrorailincreases. This is disappointing, becausethe poor are getting poorer and the im-pact will definitely be felt by those on theground.”

Meanwhile, local taxi drivers are ada-mant that taxi fees will have to increase, sooner rather than later.

Richard Cwai, a taxi driver on the Wyn-berg/Retreat route says fares should defi-nitely be increased. “I am a father of four

fromGugulethu. I havebeendriving taxisfor years now, and petrol has become ex-tremely expensive. People are going tohave to pay more for taxi fare – there isno other way, otherwise food is being tak-en out of me and my children’s mouths.”

David Samiul, who drives the HanoverPark/Retreat route says the last timetheir taxi associationhadan increasewas

almost three years ago. “Wehave to have an increase. Wedidn’t have one in a long time, but if we don’t, we lose out atthe end of the day. I believe weare still the cheapest mode oftransport, so it has to happensome time or another.”

Nazeem Abduragman, fromthe Mitchell’s Plain Taxi As-sociation says that taxi priceswill definitely increase soon.

“We are extremely commu-nity orientated and we hate todo it, but we are going to have

to push the taxi prices up. It’s not that wewant to, we are forced to do it. The petrolhikes are killing us. If it does increasethough, we will keep it as low as possi-ble”, says Abduragman.

Some commuters People’s Post spoke tosay another fare hike would be too muchto bear, but others understand the situa-tion.

“Everybody needs to make a living, andit’s not the taxi driver’s fault that the pet-rol went up. So if push comes to shove, and they do increase their fees, it shouldbe okay, as long as they don’t increase ittoo much. Besides, I think they are stillcheap,” says Darren Seeger, a regulartaxi commuter.

SUMMER JACOBS

THERE were proud faces allround when the Saartjie Baart-man Centre unveiled their ownunique wallpaper on Thursdayat the haven for women and chil-dren in Manenberg.

The Saartjie Baartman Centre isa human rights-based, non govern-mental organisation, which pro-vides a refuge for those who haveexperienced violence.

The centre was proud to show-case a beautiful wallpaper createdduring a four-day workshop byeight of the residents in partner-ship with textile designer and facili-tator, Jane Solomon, and Plascon.

The aim of the creative projectwas to rejuvenate the dining room’s

kitchen space, giving it a welcom-ing feel for all who use it. “When Icame to the workshop I had no ideaas to what was going to happen. Westarted off by brainstorming thekind of atmosphere the womenwould like to create in the space. Some of the words that came upwere uplifting, inspirational, wel-coming, calm, sereneandpeaceful,”says Solomon.

Solomon explains that during theworkshop, there was a series ofprocesses which she and the eightparticipants had to follow to createthe art piece. The colour palette wasone of these processes. “After talk-ing about the symbolism of colour, each woman, using Plascon paint, put together five colours per personto reflect the words. It was interest-ing that although everyone workedseparately, the colour choices werenot that different,” says Solomon.

To match the bright and upliftingcolours, texts were also added to thewallpaper to inspire hope and en-couragement to those who read it.The women were asked to thinkabout personal slogans which theyused to keep them going, whether itcame from their mothers or grand-mothers, religious texts or songs. The results were a true reflection ofthe rainbow nation housed at thecentre as the array of slogans in-cluded: “I can do all things throughChrist who gives me the strength”,“All is well kulungile”, “Keep stead-fast to the tight rope of Allah”, andeven a line of a T-Pain song: “All Ido is win no matter what”.

These texts, along with the cho-sen colours, were then brought to-

gether in personal mandalas, tak-ing on a flower-like form on thewallpaper. According to Solomon, each circle represents an aspect ofthe woman’s life. The small circle inthe centre for example representsthe “self”, the circle after that repre-sents love and support, the thirdrepresent challenges and obstacles, and the fourth and fifth circles rep-resent hope and opportunity. Lineswere then added to theses circles tosymbolise linking the bad with thegood to bring them together as awhole. The name of the wallpaper

was decided to be “Flowers forSaartjie”, which Solomon describesas “a celebration and acknowledg-ment of the beauty and strength ofwomen.”

One of the eight women who par-ticipated in theworkshopdescribedthe workshop as “a boost”. She saidthat it made her realise that therewas a way that they could share andexpress feelings through art.

Partners of the Saartjie Baart-man Centre are the city of CapeTown and the Cape Craft and De-sign Institute who were present and

in full support of the centre’s crea-tive art project.

Beverly Cortje-Alcock praisedtheworkdoneat the centre and stat-ed the importance of support servic-es to women and children.

Executive director of the insti-tute, Erica Elk, was also proud ofthe workshop’s achievements.

“We have achieved what we werelooking for. We have created a proc-ess with a beautiful outcome thatwill live on and touch the partici-pants’ lives in a very meaningfulway.”

METRORAIL’s last minute pricehike reprieve turned into a

nightmare for the parastatal on Mon-day 2 April when commuters ended upbeing charged up to 50% more for theirmonthly tickets.

Metrorail admitted that it experienceda technical flaw in its system and prom-ised to refund all commuters who were af-fected by the price shock.

The saga started in March when Metro-rail announced that it would be increas-ing fares by an average of 27% on 1 April.

A number of organisations includingtrade union federation COSATU, the CapeChamber of Commerce and Industry andthe provincial government vehementlyobjected to it.

Two days before the increase wasmeant to kick in, Metrorail announcedthat it had decided on a 13% increase in-stead, after consulting with labour andbusiness.

The move was widely welcomed, al-though Provincial Transport MEC RobinCarlisle insisted that 13% was still toosteep and accused COSATU and the CapeChamber of “selling out” commuters.

But on Monday morning things turnedsour when commuters were left to fork

out much more than they bargained for.People buying their monthly tickets

had to dig deep and were furious at thethought of paying so much more for theirtickets.

Tasmyn Fredericks, who travels towork from Retreat to Observatory everymorning was supposed to pay R215 for hermonthly ticket, but on Monday, she wasforced to cough up R326.

“It completely threw me out. I preparedfor the increase, but when it came to R326I was confused.”

Fortunately Fredericks had the extramoney to pay for her ticket.

Another commuter, Jessica EcksteenMorkel, who travels from Athlone to CapeTown everyday, says she’s not that con-cerned by the increase, but feels thatMetrorail needs to improve its service.

“People who get paid weekly are suffer-ing the most because their bosses deductfrom their salaries because Metrorail has“technical difficulties” and people thenget to work late.

“It’s unacceptable. It’s all good and wellthat they increase their fares, but is theservice going to improve?”

Metrorail’s regional manager,Mthuthuzeli Swartz, says: “The systemproblem is regrettable and we are doingeverything within our power to correctthe fares.”

To calculate how much your month-ly ticket should cost go to Metrorail’sTransport Information Centre, theirticket offices, or use the fare calculatoron their website, www.capemetro-rail.co.za.

Carnage continuesAT last count, more than 100 people had beenkilled on South African roads over the Easterweekend.

Although this figure is down compared to2011 when more than 200 people lost theirlives on the road, this in no way minimisesthe impact from loss of lives.

Easter is a time of worship for Christianscelebrating the resurrection of Jesus fromdeath, it is a joyous time to spend with familyand friends; not intended for mourning.

On 3 April, Transport and Public WorksMEC Robin Carlisle expressed his hope for nofatalities in the province on the roads at East-er. This was not to be.

Among others: In the Western Cape, twopeople diedwhenacar and twobakkies collid-ed in Eerste Rivier; in Limpopo six peopledied in a head-on collision and another fivewere killed in a head on crash in Durban.

This, despite nationwide road safety cam-paigns which targeted fatigue managementon all major routes, saw Emergency MedicalRescue on standby in high risk locationsalong several highways and provided a hot-line to report dangerous or reckless driving.

Traffic services monitored speed limit en-forcement, drunk driving, unroadworthy ve-hicles and pedestrian safety.

The authorities have done everything intheir power – from Operation Exodus to theArrive Alive Road Safety Campaign – to keepSouth Africans safe on the roads, short ofphysically climbing behind the wheel anddriving themselves.

When all is said and done, primary and ulti-mate responsibility rests with the person en-trusted behind the wheel.

Every driver is well aware of the murder-ous implications of driving drunk, speedingand driving unroadworthy vehicles, yetmany, in the foolhardy belief that “it will nev-er happen to me”, risk their lives, that of theirpassengers and innocent fellow motorists.

Next Easter, can we turn Carlisle’s hope ofzero road fatalities into a reality?

What about the homeless?I WAS quoted in your article (“Local vagrancy‘not major’ enough”, People’s Post, 13 March)that the existence of the Owl Night Shelterand Flamingo Crescent informal settlementcould be a reason why Lansdowne’s vagrancyproblems have not been included in the eightareas the City of Cape Town will be buildingvagrant assessment centres in.

It might seem to some that I’m amenable toLansdowne’s omission from the eight areas. This is not the case, as the Lansdowne CivicAssociation (LCA) has, on numerous occa-sions, complained about Lansdowne being adumping ground for vagrants – starting withthe creation of the settlement by the City inOctober 2005.

Since then, many more vagrants have mi-grated to Lansdowne due to the shebeens op-erating in the settlement which is councilowned land and was zoned as public openspace long before the relocation of vagrants.

People’s Post reported on the LCA’s call foran independent forensic investigation intothe establishment of the settlement: (“Probeinto Flamingo demanded”, 12 July 2011).

After a few responses to the letters pagefrom Mayco member for Human Settlements, councillor Ernest Sonnenberg, that there wasan established settlement at Flamingo, priorto the relocation of vagrants – which was re-butted by Lansdowne residents, Sonnenbergseemingly changed tactics and responded twomonths after our initial request, that a reviewhad been undertaken and a forensic investiga-tion was not required.

It is deeply disturbing to the LCA that theCity can create an informal settlement inLansdowne, accept no responsibility to moni-

tor/police the settlement for years, whichthen attracts even more vagrants to our areaand, then Mayco Member for Social and EarlyChildhood Development, councillor BeverlyCortjie-Alcock, adds insult to injury by turn-ing a blind eye to the out of control vagrancyproblem in Lansdowne, created by the City.IGBAL HOOSAINChairperson: Lansdowne Civic Association. Inresponse:MayoralCommitteeMemberfor Human Settlements, councillor ErnestSonnenberg says: “Flamingo Crescent is sit-uated on public open space, which makes itCity-owned land.

People will remain residing there until wehave an alternative for them. Law Enforce-ment and the City’s Anti-Land Invasion Unitwill continue to monitor the area to ensurethat the settlement does not grow. FlamingoCrescent is a priority area in terms of the pro-vision of basic services.”

. Executive Director of Safety and Secu-rity,RichardBosman, says: “TheCity’sDis-placed People’s Unit (DPU) is available to as-sist in transporting street people to the assess-ment centres and will assist withreintegration as far as possible. When re-quested, the DPU relocates street people andtheir belongings to the various informal set-tlements or any other area that has beenagreed upon – night shelters, temporary relo-cation areas or to the care of family andfriends.

The DPU will relocate any street person atany time who wishes to be relocated to anyplace within the jurisdiction of Cape Town, providing that it is not in contravention ofCity policy.”

. A special thank youand shukran to everymember of our communityin Hanover Park. I appreci-ate your support in pur-chasing my party packets.

Taxi troubles. The arrogant respons-

es by those taxi drivers toMr Loonat proves thatthese guys have absolutelyno respect for the rules ofthe road nor fellow motor-ists.

. Mr Loonat did not lis-ten to parasites and oppor-tunists, but to men whohave been in this industryfor more than 20 years.

Because they are not ed-ucated, they have beenoverlooked and remained

drivers. They were nevergiven the opportunity tobecome a proud permitholder. Thank you for theservice that you provide toour communities. Thiswas not about oversaturat-ing the route, but ratherthe dormant permits thathave become available andgiven to taxi owners whoalready are permit hold-ers. Human rights activist

. What age are the taxiowners now who ‘built upbusiness and routes over120 years’? And what vehi-cles were used then? Meg

In response.Thanks, Farieda and

Karima. Atheists like RedBull and Jason Bosch needlessons in respect fromMuslims, Jews and Chris-tians alike. Our faiths cre-ated science, Jason. “Thefool says in his heart:‘There is no God.’” Ein-stein, Kepler, Newton, Ar-ab mathematicians and as-tronomers were not fools,Jason.

.I agree with Desperate.I am 49 years old, singleand unemployed. I am aparent with two depend-ants. I have been withoutwork for two years and Iam financially frustratedbecause nobody wants to

help. You are either over-experienced, underquali-fied or overaged. So whatdo you do? Go to the streetsor run a shebeen to putbread on the table?

Train of thought.Vandalism is not the

only thing that destroystrains; poor maintenancedoes too.

.I fail to understand theprice hike as commutershave been struggling withthe service for years. Ihave used trains to get toschool and to work. No an-nouncements are madewhen there are problemson the line – we just standon the platform, not know-ing what’s happening.

Imagineanhourwithoutcommunication. Whathappened to the railwaybuses we used to havewhen there were cancella-tions?

By the way. The Department of

Transport tells us, the mo-torists, to obey the rules ofthe road. I have seen howDial-a-Ride drivers in theirwhite Toyota Corollasovertake other vehicles onsolidwhite lines onnumer-ous occasions. What’s upwith that?

FOR older members of Cape Town’s soc-cer fraternity the name Battswood Foot-ball Club brings back memories of theglory days of the ’80s when the team wasone of the best in Cape Town.

The side is still fondly remembered fortheir exploits on the soccer field, the tro-phies they won and for producing some ofthe most talented footballers to come fromthe city.

Unfortunately, the success did not last toolong into the professional era of local footballand in recent times Battswood teams havefailed to emulate the successes of their prede-cessors.

Despite this, the club seems to have madea lasting impact on some of its finest prod-ucts and success could soon return to Batts-wood.

Adeed Abrahams, who was the team’sfirst-choice goalkeeper during their halcyondays of the ’80s, is one of many players whohavepassed through thedoors of this famousclub.

Apart from the success he achieved withthe team, Abrahams has also won several in-dividual awards – including Western Prov-inceFootballBoardPlayerof theYear in 1982and 1986, South African Council on Sport(Sacos) Sportsman of the Year in 1986, andthe South African Soccer Federation Profes-sional Footballer of the Year award in 1986.

Abrahams believes that the values helearnt at the club is what helped him toachieve this and he has now returned to

Battswood, along with a group of otherformer stars, in an attempt to help restorethe club to its former glory.

“We thought that when we moved on, theyounger generation would come through, like we did when we played and we took overand we started becoming the chairman andthe treasurer,” says Abrahams.

“But nobody came through to the extentthat there was progression.

“So we decided that we are going to comeback and try and revive or put back into theclub and get to a point where at least thereis going to be some structure when you getto a coaching session.”

Other Battswood legends who are back atthe club are Trevor Rossouw – who was theteam’s coach during the ’80s – Ian Southgateand Vincent Barnes, the former Proteas as-sistant coach.

The group has been back at the club forjust over two months and has been workingon improving the coaching structures at jun-ior levels.

Although the group hopes that Battswoodwill once again play alongside the best clubsin South Africa, Abrahams said the immedi-ate goal is to make the club attractive toyoung players.

“I think that’s the overall picture. We needto start here with the kids. We need to makeBattswood an attraction to make childrenwant to come and play for the club.

“Because we can’t compete with Ajax andSantos because of their infrastructure, wehave to make do with what we have. We areprepared to do that because we have done itbefore.”

THREE of South Africa’s top Kenpopractitioners will jet off to Holland nextmonth to take part in the annual Inter-national Karate Championships (IKC) –the biggest Kenpo Karate tournament inthe world.

The three were invited to the tournamentin December last year after their school,Kealoha Kempo, became the first on the Af-rican continent to be recognised by Interna-tional Kenpo Karate Academies (IKKA) –the controlling body for that particularstyle of Karate.

According to instructor Nazeem Holmes,Kealoha Kenpo, which is based in PrinceArthur Road, Lansdowne, became affiliatedafter he made contact with the head of theorganisation and sent out videos of himselfand his students practising their martialart.

“It means that we are now part of an or-ganisation that has been recognised to be le-gitimate Kenpo practitioners,” says Holm-es.

“The recognition came through in Augustlast year and in December we got invitedto the IKC 2012.

“We fall under the (IKKA). We are the on-ly (Kenpo) school on the African continentthat is legitimately listed.”

The event will take place in Utrecht, Hol-land, from Thursday 3 to Sunday 6 May andwill include classes, gradings, seminars and

tournaments.Holmes, who lives in Athlone, will be

joined by two of his students, Junaid Essafrom Newfields and Khadija Peck from Ot-tery, at the tournament in Holland.

Essa has been practising Kenpo since hewas five and says that the sport has taughthim self-discipline and self-restraint.

The 19-year-old says thathehopes to learnmore about this martial art at the tourna-ment.

“I’ve been waiting for this, to be invitedto fight for the IKKC, and even though thetime was short we raised the funds and I’mvery excited.

“I just want to broaden my perspective ofKenpo Karate. I want to learn new thingsthat South Africa doesn’t know about,” hesays.

According to Holmes, taking part in theIKC will help all three to increase theirknowledge of Kenpo.

“These guys are going to be exposed towho we refer to as the first generation blackbelts, the guys who actually trained withthe guy who developed the system. They getto meet the people who were there from theground up.”

Both of the school’s instructors and all ofthe students were invited to attend the tour-nament, but so far only Holmes, Essa andPeck have raised enough money to travel toHolland and take part.

For more information or to sponsor anystudents at the school contact Holmes on 082786 4228.
