In the previous municipal elec- tions in 2006, the DA won the votes of residents residing within the Rondevlei subcouncil. This year is no different, as elected councillors are all represented by the winning party. Four fresh faces have been elect- ed as ward councillors within the Rondevlei subcouncil. . Ward 65 (Grassy Park, Lotus River and Montague’s Gift) elected ward councillor Leslie Isaacs, who is determined to relieve some of the poverty in his ward. “My mission as councillor, is to improve the living conditions of backyard dwellers. There are many people in the com- munity who are unemployed – add- ing to the effects of poverty. I would also like to help create more jobs in the commu- nity,” he says. Isaacs adds that he is firm on tackling drugs and shebeens in the area, for the sake of the youth. “United, we can create a better ward where the community works together,” he says. . Ward 66 (Lotus River, Mon- tague’s Gift, Ottery East and Park- wood) elected ward councillor Mel- anie Arendse, who believes that service delivery is very important. “My main focus will be on the children in the communities. Many children drop out of school, and I would like to use my time as coun- cillor to motivate them, and show these youngsters that there are bet- ter ways of doing things,” she says. As part of motivating youngsters in the community, Arendse will be involving herself in raising funds with the communities, so that learners may be given bursaries to further their studies and become active members of society. “An educated individual is a pow- erful individual, and I would like to use my time here to be more in- volved in my community. That’s the extra mile that the councillor has to take,” says Arendse. . Ward 67 (Capricorn, Seawinds, Lotus River, Pelican Park, and Zee- koevlei) elected Shaun August, who will be looking at providing his ward with “upliftment”. “My ward has a huge number of informal set- tlements – about 18. I want to help my community take advantage of skills development so that they may be able to put food on their table,” he says. Another focus point for August in his ward is creating a greater rela- tionship between parents and their children. “I would like to con- duct tours for the youth, by taking them to Pollsmoor Prison so that they may see the lives of negative role models, and then also showing the youth what a positive role mod- el is,” he says. . Ward 72 (Elfindale, Grassy Park, Heathfield, Retreat and Southfield) re-elected Jan Burger, who says that he is very grateful to the residents who put their trust in him to act as a ward councillor for another five years. When People’s Post asked him what he would be doing differently in this term, he said: “I will be more hands-on with tackling of the issues. We do it for the people and problems will be handled the same as before, just with more interaction from and with the community.” . Ward 110 – the newly created ward (Cafda, Prince George Drive and Grassy Park) elected ward Shanen Rossouw, who says her time as councillor will be spent cov- ering the basic needs of residents. “Cafda really needs a lot of work. There are so many problems in this area, such as illegal dumping, drugs and gangsterism. I would also be fo- cusing on making sure backyard dwellers are given better living con- ditions, such as electricity, water and sanitation. “My main focus in my ward will be to strengthen Cafda and Grassy Park, and to bridge the gap between the two communities,” she says. The new ward councillors are ea- ger to start their term as council- lors, and each having different views on tackling the communities’ problems. Local hip hop star, Emile Jansen, ran as a candidate for Ward 65, as a representative of the South Afri- can Progressive Civic Organisation (SAPCO). With 79 votes at the elec- tion, the party lagged far behind the DA’s 7 319 votes. When People’s Post asked the Black Noise star why he stood as councillor, he said: “I believe there’s a lot of people in the commu- nity who are politically inclined, and who should be involved, but aren’t. I wanted to lead by example, and hopefully inspire others to be- come more involved. I do the work in the community anyway, for young people, and I would love to in- spire them to become more politi- cally involved.” Jansen, whose passion lies with the youth of the community, says that he speaks a lot to youngsters about being proactive. “I am disappointed by the out- come and the rezoning of the ward, as it was only announced on the morning of the election. “What’s depressing is that people didn’t know who they were voting for. “Democracy today could be much more powerful if the people did re- search and read more up on the peo- ple they are electing to be their lead- ers. “I am learning as I go along and I will continue doing what I’m do- ing – hopefully I woke up some peo- ple in the community,” he says. READY FOR BATTLE: Thousands of fans flocked to the Cape Town Stadium on Saturday 21 May, to watch the Urban Warriors, Ajax Cape Town F.C, capture their first PSL trophy in 11 years. However, the sea of red left the stadium disappointed, as the title went to Orlando Pirates on goal difference. Ajax required a victory, but failed to deliver, drawing 2-2 with Maritzburg United. Pirates on the other hand spoilt the party by beating Golden Arrows 2-1, with a late winner by midfielder, Isaac Chansa. In the photo are John Le Roux and his three-year-old son, Keyan. Bikers silencerumbling tumsTHOUSANDS of children across the city arelucky to have just one meal a day, and manymore go to bed on an empty stomach.

The Egoli informal settlement in Ottery isone of the areas where poverty and hungerprevails.

Relief came to the area at the beginning ofthis year, when On Eagle’s Wings ChristianMotorcycle Social Club rallied to alleviatehunger for the children of Egoli.

The club was formed at the beginning of theyear by Southfield residents, Murvin Mareeand his wife Glenda.

After visiting Egoli last year, a seed wasplanted in the couple’s minds.

The pair have been biking enthusiasts forover 20 years.

Along with five friends – from Fairwaysand Goodwood – they ventured into the infor-mal settlement to hand out food to the chil-dren.

Every Saturday, the seven members gatherat one of their houses and prepare food par-cels.

The group then makes its way to the infor-mal settlement, where they spend time withthe children – showing them that there arepeople who care about them – and ending offby providing them with a hearty meal.

The motorcycle group would like to go be-yond just feeding the children.

Their goal is to take the children to a field, perhaps Zandvlei, and spend individual timewith them – getting to know their names andproviding a range of activities for them.

The group will be hosting a bingo fundrais-er on Friday 27 May at Rondebosch East Pri-mary School in Fourth Avenue at 19:30 for20:00. Booklets cost R20.

For more information or if you would liketo make a donation of any kind, contact Glen-da Maree on (021) 706-6848 or 082 945 4954.

Fishing for meaningANDRE BAKKES

MOGAMED JACOBS looks down thedeserted beach and finds comfort in hissolitude.

He chooses a spot which seems identicalto the next, unpacks his fishing gear andprepares for a 10-hour shift of some seriousunwinding.

It is 05:30 on a rainy Tuesday morning, but the 36-year-old Mitchell’s Plain resi-dent glows with content.

This is, after all, doing what he lovesmost – fishing at Beespens near Strandfon-tein.

“I’ve been coming here three times aweek for about 20 years,” he smiles.

Every time his face lights up, he resem-bles a man who is at complete peace withthe world, a man who has discovered thevery essence of happiness.

He fishes about 10 hours a day and threetimes a week, so there is plenty of time tocontemplate the meaning of life.

“Sometimes I sit here the whole day andfail to catch anything,” he continues.

“I will sit in a world of my own and forgetabout all my problems. One learns how todeal with these as well. Even if the fishdon’t bite, I will start thinking rationallyabout various situations. Sometimes youwill get an idea, quickly pick up your stuffand leave so that you can go and imple-ment it.”

Jacobs was born in Bonteheuwel, a placehe describes as being “a little rougharound the edges”. His father taught himeverything he knows about fishing, and hehas been implementing these skills froma young age.

“It kept me out of trouble,” he winks. This is one of the main reasons he wantshis 13-year-old son, Tashreeq, to join himon his fishing excursions when he can.

“Unfortunately he isn’t too keen ... butI was the same when I was young. Aftersome time I gave it a try, and as soon asthat first fish bit, I was hooked for life.”

Ever since then he has pulled out somereal beauties, the biggest being an 11 kg ka-beljou. He has caught a few sharks as well, which is apparently quite common.

“A battle with a shark can drag you to-wards the water with quite a force. It could

take up to three hours to finally get it outof the water!”

When listening to the excitement in hisvoice while he explains the thrill of thehustle, it becomes obvious that the serenewait is trumped by the big catch.

And when that happens it is not onlyJacobs who celebrates, but his wholeneighbourhood.

“If I catch many, or a big one, then I dis-tribute it among those who are hungry. There are days when my neighbourswould eagerly await my return and hopeto benefit with a fish or two.”

Jacobs insists, however, that a day with-out any fish is far from a failure, since themain reason behind his hobby is to relaxand drift away in the breeze.

Jacobs doesn’t pretend to know the an-swers to the meaning of life, but a lifetimeon the beach has taught him one impor-tant lesson.

“The secret is that one must work hardin everything one does, whether it be a jobor a relationship. If you manage this, thenyou will show people your unique value.”

French playwright, Marcel Pagnol, oncesaid: “The reason people find it so hard tobe happy is that they always see the pastbetter than it was, the present worse thanit is, and the future less resolved than itwill be.”

For the smiling Jacobs, the past, presentand future represents just one thing – fish-ing.

Strandfontein Roadopens after upgradeMELISSA LE ROUX

PHASE ONE of the StrandfonteinRoad upgrade, costing R9,4 mil-

lion, was officially opened on Monday16 May, improving traffic flow due toits double lanes.

This is according to Henry du Plessis, the City of Cape Town’s Director of Roadsand Stormwater.

The upgrade was motivated by trafficstudies conducted about 10 years agowhich suggested that the existing roadcould not support the volume of trafficthat would be generated by the proposedPelican Park Housing Development.

The development’s Phase One is set tostart in September. It will create 3 200houses in Zeekoevlei, as previously re-ported by People’s Post (“More houses forPelican Park”, 19 April).

The upgrade has changed the singlelane road into a dual carriageway, allow-ing a freer flow of traffic.

However, it has been claimed that thenew road poses a danger to pedestrians.(“Danger dash”, People’s Post, 26 April).

The concern was that there were noproper safety measures for pedestriansusing the road when they get off publictransport.

The road is a high-mobility route, saysDu Plessis. Pedestrian walkways and cy-cle lanes will also be built to promote non-motorised transport in the area.

“A lane will be constructed to be usedby community members who wish to cy-cle and jog without having to worry aboutbeing dangerously close to fast movingcars,” said Du Plessis.

Theresa Solomons, who lives in Ottery,

says she uses the road on Sundays, as thechurch she belongs to is in Schaapkraal.

“That road is very dangerous. We haveto wait long before we can cross the roadsafely, and even then we have to dodgefast cars coming on. Something needs tobe done,” she says.

Du Plessis says traffic signals will beplaced strategically according to theroad’s construction. “Traffic signals willbe placed at certain points on the stretchof road. This will be part of Phase Twoof the upgrade of Strandfontein Road.

“The traffic signals will act as a trafficcalming measure, reducing conflict be-tween motorists and pedestrians,” hesays.

Du Plessis adds that street lightingalong the entire road has been installedto further add to the safety of pedestrianswho may be using the road at night.

When the entire Strandfontein Roadupgrade project is complete, the existingStrandfontein Road will be used as a serv-ice road, running along the Easternboundary of the proposed Pelican ParkHousing Development, and direct accessto Strandfontein Road will be restricted.

Du Plessis says the City will be puttingout a tender for the construction of PhaseTwo shortly, and work is expected to becompleted by the end of the year.

The chairperson of Pelican Park/EaglePark Residents’ Association, YaseenMeyer, says that the road needs to bemade safer for pedestrians as soon as pos-sible.

“I have received a lot of complaintsfrom residents about their safety on theroad. People appreciate the upgrade onthe road, but it needs to be made safe forpedestrians soon,” he says.

DOUBLE TROUBLE: The upgrade on Strandfontein Road has added two lanes; however, the road has not yet been made safer for pedestrians. Photo: Archive

“The whole point behind the festival isto create awareness around the youth.Young people are so frivolous nowadays, and HIV/Aids is a serious issue. They justdon’t seem to care about or worry aboutthe complications,” says Jennifer Hoff-man, secretary of the Grassy Park Com-munity Festival.

There will be a soccer tournament forboys under the age of 13 and another onefor young men under the age of 18. Theregistration date to take part in the soccerchallenge is Friday 10 June.

A good eye for qualityEYESAVE Optometrist in VictoriaRoad, Grassy Park, opened in Septem-ber 1995 under the name Eyesite Op-tometrist.

Due to ownership issues regarding therights to the name Eyesite, the owner, SirajZalgaonkir, changed the name to EyesaveOptometrist a few years ago.

Zalgaonkir, a qualified optometrist whowas born in Victoria Road, Grassy Park, went to EC Primary School as well asGrassy Park High, where he matriculatedin 1989. He furthered his studies in Durbanat the University of Durban-Westville,where he qualified as an optometrist in1994, and came back to Grassy Park to openhis optometry practice in Victoria Road.

To this day – 16 years later – he stillserves the community from the same store, and would like to thank all the customersand friends who have supported EyesaveOptometrist over the years.

Through its customer service and prod-ucts, Eyesave Optometrist has expanded toan independent chain of eight stores in theWestern Cape.

“It can be difficult to judge the quality ofa pair of spectacles, but we at Eyesave Op-tometrist use only the finest frames andlenses available so that your spectacles

will be dependable and attractive for along time after purchasing them,” saysZalgaonkir.

Eyesave Optometrist has the latesteye-testing equipment and profession-al, qualified staff to ensure that custom-ers’ eye tests are thorough.

“We offer a large selection of framesto choose from. Our expert staff willhelp you select the frame, shape, sizeand colour that looks good on you.

“We offer the latest designs and treat-ments that can make your spectacleslook thinner, feel lighter and glarefree,” he says.

Spectacles are a wear-and-tear item, and require constant service for opti-mal use. Thus Eyesave Optometristurges the community to take up its offerof a free service check on spectacles, asoften as needed.

The spectacles house offers custom-ers easy payment options by acceptingall medical aids, credit and debit cards,lay-byes, and store cards, such as thosefrom Edgars and Jet.

There is a one-year guarantee on allproducts and services, and to accommo-date all customers, Eyesave Optome-trist is open until 19:00 on weekdaysand Saturdays from 09:00 to 13:00.

Toy donation for pre-schoolsLIAM MOSES

TOYS to the value of R225 000 were donatedto 15 pre-schools across the Western Cape lastweek.

The toys were donated to the schools by re-tailer Game as part of the company’s corpo-rate social investment strategy.

“We chose the early childhood develop-ment level specifically for Game because webelieve that the foundation level of a child’s

development is most important,” says IrisNaidoo, the corporate social investment prac-titioner at Game.

The kits donated to the schools are valuedat R15 000 each, and contain several types ofeducational toys, including puzzles, blocksand books.

The toys were delivered to the pre-schoolson Monday 16 May, and a handover ceremonywas also held at the offices of the Centre forEarly Childhood Development (CECD), in

Rosmead Avenue, Claremont, onTuesday 17 May.

Game has partnered with the CECDso that the teachers at the beneficiaryschools can be trained in how to usethe new toys.

According to Professor Eric At-more, director of the CECD, the train-ing was necessary to make the pro-gramme as effective as possible.

“Game has provided the equipmentand we use that equipment when wetrain teachers,” says Atmore

“Providing equipment alone is notsufficient. You need to explain howeach item is used.” The schools thatbenefited from project were chosen bythe CECD. Several Game employeesand children from the Little SquirrelsDaycare from Westlake and Genesis Educarefrom Athlone, two pre-schools that benefitedfrom the project, were at the handover cere-mony.

The other beneficiary pre-schools are fromareas across the Western Cape, includingMitchell’s Plain, Heideveld, Lotus River,Piketberg and Riebeek Kasteel.

LEARNING THROUGH PLAY:Iris Naidoo, Game’s corporate social investment practitioner, plays with two ofthe children who are set to benefit from the donation.

Court order not fulfilledIT IS only appropriate that I write to cor-rect certain inaccuracies following theresponse of Mayco member, ShehaamSims to my letter “Where are the rightsof the poor?” (People’s Post, 17 May).

I did not imply that the ruling of JudgeErasmus was “more than just an inter-pretation of the law”. This is the view ofSims, which she chose to raise on behalfof the DA on the eve of elections.

Our constitution is the supreme law ofthe Republic; law or conduct inconsist-ent with it is invalid, and the obligationsimposed by it must be fulfilled.

Judge Erasmus applied his mind whenhe correctly ruled against the DA in theMakhaza toilets saga. The DA, like theANC in the Free State, had clearly failedto provide proper sanitation – a basic hu-man right to which the poor are entitled.

In respect of the Bonnytoun judge-ment, Sims appears to skirt around somevery clear instructions issued by HighCourt Judge, Deon van Zyl.

He stated that “the City should withinthree weeks of his order, consult with Co-lin Arendse or Desmond Ross in their ca-pacities as representatives of the appli-cants, concerning the housing pro-gramme and plan with the view toadvising the homeless of all their hous-ing options”. The three weeks referred toby Judge van Zyl ended on 19 May 2005.

Des Ross has since passed away, and, after six years, I am still waiting for theCity/DA to consult with me as instructed

by Judge van Zyl.Incidentally, the citizens ofBonnytoun

did not “invade the land”. Some of themhave been staying there for more than 20years, and the daughter of Lizzie Khoma(first applicant) was born in Bonnytounand delivered by the colleagues of Simsfrom the nearby Wynberg Fire Station.

With regards to the Zilleraine Heightsissue, I have minutes of a meeting whereI was present when the pilot project forbackyard dwellers in Grassy Park wasdiscussed.

Helen Zille even sent me an email onthe subject, and I can only speculate asto why these facts were not presented bythe DA administration in the HighCourt, prior to the granting of an evic-tion order.

In order for readers to arrive at an in-formed decision following the responsefromtheDA, theyneedonly readPeople’sPost of 17 May “Ottery residents sick andtired of waiting for the City to give themhouses”; “Crime thrives in dark streetsof Grassy Park/Lotus River due to nolighting” and “Derelict buildings inWynberg scare away customers”.

With respect, the DA appears to “deliv-er” selectively and the facts I’ve raisedabove speak for themselves.COLIN ARENDSEGrassy Park

This letter was sent to Councillor Simsprior to comment but no response wasforthcoming. – Ed.

Time to deliverTHE local government elections are over; theelectorate has played its part, the IEC has en-sured a free and fair process, the victors havebroken open the champers and the van-quished have regrouped.

Now the real work begins.Every single election, be it municipal or na-

tional, be it at home or abroad, is characte-rised by electioneering. This courtship pro-mises voters the world – in this case, the city.

Politicians pull out all the stops, unreser-vedly so.

Their ultimate goal is power; power thatcorrupts; absolute power that corrupts abso-lutely – as (loosely) quoted by 19th centuryhistorian and moralist John Emerich Ed-ward Dalberg Acton, who said: “Power tendsto corrupt, and absolute power corrupts abso-lutely. Great men are almost always badmen.”

True or false? In the political context, it has been shown

to be the former and the names of some“great” South African men spring to mind.

One man’s name stands out, though – thatof an internationally-revered great man, ourown former president Nelson Mandela, whodid not succumb to the intoxicating lure ofpower.

Election results are proof that “the peoplehave spoken” and during this municipal elec-tions, the people elected to keep the ANC inpower, nationally. But in the coveted WesternCape, the DA has triumphed, obtaining anoutright majority in a number of WesternCape municipalities, including Cape Town, where the party secured 135 seats, followedby the ANC with 73, and the ACDP and Cope, with three seats each.

Delivery is crucial to running a city suc-cessfully, especially one as diverse as CapeTown. More importantly, though, the onus ison all political parties and their candidatesto honour the mandate voters have entrustedthem with and play equal leading roles in ele-vating all nine provinces to world-class stan-dards.

ETV’s Naked News, broadcast on a Fridaynight/early Saturday morning after the22:00 movie, has unlocked controversyamong various organisations taking a

stand for family values, including theFamily Policy Institute, which has calledon members of the public to write in toetv in protest against the show. In the

show, woman presenters present art, en-tertainment and lifestyle news either na-ked or while stripping down. etv says theshow will be aired over the next 12 weeks.

Racing through historyTAURIQ HASSEN

IMAGINE a race through the historybooks, passing many of the historiclandmarks built by the slaves in theearly 1700s.

This vision will become reality whenthe Jive Slave Route Chal-lenge kicks off on Sunday12 June.

It will consist of fourevents; a half marathon, a10km run or race/walk, a5km fun run or walk, anda 10km big walk.

According to FaroukMeyer, organiser of theevent, the race is designedto place emphasis on thehistoric sites built and cre-ated by the slaves.

“This race has to be dif-ferent to the other races inCape Town, because al-most the whole of CapeTown was built by slaves, and there are many histor-ical landmarks to be seen,”says Meyer.

The race starts off inDarling Street in front ofthe City Hall, moves upKeizergracht towards Dis-trict Six, down RoelandStreet into Orange Street, then through the Company’s Garden andinto Bo-Kaap before the race finishes onthe Grand Parade.

Some of the landmarks along the routeinclude:

. The Whipping Post on the corner ofBuitenkant and Darling streets, whichwasonceaplaceof tortureandexecution.

This was a post to which slaves and con-victed persons were tied while receivingcorporal punishment.

. The Auwal Mosque in Bo-Kaap’sDorp Street is the oldest mosque in thecountry. The Muslim faith was broughtto South Africa by slaves brought toSouth Africa by the Dutch East India

Company. This mosque’shistory dates back to 1794and the property wasowned by a freed slave, Sa-lie Coridon, of Ceylon.

. Old Slave Church,South African Mission Mu-seum at the top of LongStreet, was founded by theSA Missionary Society in1799 to spread Christianityto the slaves.

. The Castle of GoodHope was built by theDutch in 1666 after their ar-rival.

The Castle was erected asa five-pointed star on theforeshore of Cape Town. Itis one of the oldest surviv-ing buildings in SA.

“Everybody is encour-aged to join the race, be-cause it’s an opportunity toexplore your history dur-ing a race, which is some-thing different and excit-ing,” says Meyer.

People’s Post is proud to be the printmedia sponsor of this event.

Entry forms for the race will be madeavailable on Thursday 26 May. For fur-ther information, visit www.itheko.orgor contact Farouk on 083 460 6736 or Fati-ma on 083 943 6236 or Shiehaam on084 991 1200.

Allister vs Jake – coaching duel awaitsAllister vs Jake – coaching duel awaitsTASMIN CUPIDO

A MATCH of two halves – this ishow one can describe the match

between the DHL Stormers and theBlues at Eden Park in Auckland onFriday morning.

And with the Blues convincingly tak-ing the first of the two halves, going intohalf-time with a 19-3 lead, no Stormersfan can be criticised for not believingthat their team could come back to winthe match.

But it was the men from the Cape whocame back guns ablaze, winning themost important half and securing theirfirst win on their tour of Australasia.

They beat the home side 28-26, with alast-minute try by captain Schalk Burg-er, and an all-important conversion bystand-in flyhalf, Dewaldt Duvenage.

The relatively young side, withoutmany of their experienced stalwarts, stood up to the challenge laid down bythe Blues, with the centre pairing of Jo-hann Sadie and Juan de Jongh undoubt-edly the stars in the performance.

“They were playing against somepretty good opposition, and showedsome great touches.

“I am really pleased with their per-formance,” coach Allister Coetzee saidof the young duo’s performance.“Thewin is a massive morale booster for thisside, and definitely stands us in greatstead for the rest of the competition.”

The men from the Cape now turntheir sights to the capital of Australia,Canberra, where they will face a strug-gling Brumbies side.

And it is also in this match where Co-etzee will meet his former coachingteam-mate, Jake White, who recentlyaccepted the position of head coach ofthe two-time championship side. How-

ever, he will only be assuming duty in2012, but a recent surge in play by theBrumbies – they drew 13-13 to the West-ern Force in Perth on Saturday – indi-cates that White may already be assist-ing the side.

With White and Coetzee workingclosely to secure the 2007 World Cup vic-tory for the Springboks, it will be inter-esting to see just how much these twobreeders remember of the others’ styleand coaching techniques.

The Brumbies’ preparations havebeen marred by the fact that star per-formers such as Matt Giteau, AdamAshley-Cooper and Mark Chisholmhave already signed up with otherteams for next season, while injuries tothe likes of captain, Rocky Elsom, haveforced them to field relatively inexperi-enced sides week after week.

However, one can never write off aside like the Brumbies, who have alsobeen runners-up in the competition onthree occasions.

And with key players such as Jean deVilliers, Jaque Fourie and Peter Grantreturning from injury, team selectionwill be interesting, after the perform-ance by Sadie and De Jongh last week-end.

Manyhave indicated thatCoetzee andbackline coach, Robbie Fleck shouldlook to rest the pairing – De Villiers andFourie – before the last stretch of thecompetition, while others have saidthat the two should play with the young-er pairing playing on wing. If thatshould happen, the experience of BryanHabana (wing) and Conrad Jantjes (full-back) will be lost, with paceman, GioAplon moving to fullback.

A different approach may not alwaysbe necessary, but could prove vital inthe remaining weeks of the competi-tion.

Stunned Ajax’s tales of woeStunned Ajax’s tales of woeBRIAN GAFFNEY

WANTED: A coach in the mouldof Foppe De Haan plus an expe-

rienced pool of defenders and mid-fielders.

These should be some of the prerequi-sites that Ajax Cape Town CEO GeorgeComitis and his fellow directors will in-evitably need to ponder as they re-shape and strengthen their squad fornext season.

Ajax, after being in a virtually unas-sailable position to annex the Premier-ship champions’ title for the first timein its 11-year history, were denied aplace in the soccer annals when Maritz-burg United held them to a 2-2 draw atCape Town Stadium on Saturday after-noon.

The result afforded Orlando Piratesthe honour to walk the red car-pet – with a better goal differencerecord than Ajax’s – after a 2-1 win overGolden Arrows at the Orlando Stadiumin Soweto.

The dramatic change in fortune thatcameaboutmidway through the secondhalf– after Ajax had led 1-0 via a KhamaBilliat goal – left De Haan devastated.

Panic and pathetic defensive playhad cost Ajax dearly – and ruined DeHaan’s retirement from top-class soc-cer – at the most crucial time of the sea-

son.Veteran custodian Hans Vonk

spoiled his farewell match when hefailed to clear an innocuous back passin the face of a determined challenge bygoalscorer Gert Schalkwyk during arare raid on the Ajax goal.

Suddenly Ajax looked bewilderedand Maritzburg sensed the Urban War-riors were in disarray.

The pacy Felix Obada exposed long-serving but injury-prone left flank de-fender Brett Evans – whose inclusionfor the big match appeared to be basedon sentiment. Yes, the risk of fieldingEvans so soon after his recovery frominjury backfired horribly.

Then too, Nazeer Allie – also backfrom injury – looked unsure in his rolenext to Clayton Daniels at the centre ofdefence whenever Maritzburg appliedpressure. And it told when his unforcedhandball infringement afforded DiyaSibisi the penalty opportunity to hit thetarget against his former club.

Sameehg Doutie equalised after plac-ing his low shot past goalkeeper andman-of-the-match Shu-aib Walters. Butthe livewire midfielders’ effort cametoo late. Pirates were already celebrat-ing in Soweto.

Now what Ajax need most desperate-ly is an experienced mentor to replaceDeHaan –with the final choice thatwillbe announced in a fortnight’s time like-

ly to be a fellow-Dutchman.A dependable replacement for Vonk

is also vital as back-up keeper AndrePetim – with due respect to his unwa-vering commitment to the Ajax cause– lacks the build to deal with crosses in-to the danger area.

The imminent return of Cole Alexan-der and Aiden Jenniker from a loanspell with Vasco Da Gama will pay divi-dends.

Ball winners like Alexander andGranwald Scott operating in tandemhave the potential to stabilise the Ajaxmidfield, while Jenniker could rivalEvans for the left-back position.

Another concern for Ajax of course isthe habit of some of its key players toincur suspensions – at times, needless-ly – when Ajax needed them most thispast season.

On Saturday, the suspended Them-binkosi “Terror” Fanteni watched theaction from the stands. His ability to todominate the aerial duels and to holdpossession for the pacy Thulani Serero,Billiat and Doutie was sorely missed.

Daniels also lost his composure whena needless handball infringement dur-ing a 3-0 win over Pirates ruled him outof a title-chasing clash with MamelodiSundowns, who fought back to draw 4-4after trailing 1-4 in Pretoria in April.

Ajax, Fanteni and Daniels certainlyrue those moments of indiscretion.
