Barely a year after applying for a scrap-yard licence at premises on the cornerof Zeekoe Road and 1st Avenue in Lotus

River, the business owner has now appliedfor a liquor licence on the same spot.People’s Post previously reported on the

premises where owner Sholom Davidsonhad applied for a scrapyard to be run (“Scrapthat plan, please”, 19 May 2015). The plan torun a scrapyard was abandoned when theapplication was denied.

Davidson has now applied for a liquor li-cence, but the response from residents in thearea is not positive.

And in their bid to stop the new plan from

going ahead, residents have signed petitionsobjecting to the application.

Resident Mogamad Davids says after be-ing notified of the application organisationsin the community immediately took action.

“The community took a stand and unitedby signing petitions. We cannot tolerate thisas the business is situated right opposite aschool and close to a church,” Davids says.

Davids says they became aware of the ap-plication after seeing the notice up at theshop on the premises.

“We knew we had to act. We do not wantthis licence to be granted at all. We gatheredabout 800 [signatures] so far and this wassent to the liquor authority,” he says.

Religious leader Sheik Shaheen from theLotus River mosque is also happy the com-

munity is taking a stand against the new ap-plication.

“Residents of our community, the mosqueand churches have come together to rallysupport. Lotus River has its own issues andgranting a liquor licence would only have afurther negative impact on our communi-ty,” he says.

The Western Cape Liquor Authority hadnot yet responded to People’s Post enquiriesat the time of going to print.

Owner’s responseDavidson says he is aware of the petitions

that have been sent out in the community.“Objections have been received and this

was confirmed to me by the liquor authority.The negative implications have been looked

at and this is what comes with the territory,”Davidson says.

He adds the liquor store he plans to openwill be run on a “koop en loop” basis wherecustomers will be served over a counter.

“All concerns with regard to safety and se-curity are already being addressed. I am al-ready in the process of setting up CCTV cam-eras on the premises and in future we arelooking at stationing 24-hour security at thepremises as well. This will definitely be abenefit to the school as well and the commu-nity in the surrounds,” Davidson explains.

He adds the store will contribute positive-ly to growth in the community as local em-ployment will be an investment in the com-munity.V Continued on page 2.

Gatesville group in Carnival againThe Vadhini Indian Arts Academy inGatesville, foundedbyShrimari SavitriNa-idoo, has been entertaining locals and tour-ists for 36 years.The internationally recognised academy

was established in Cape Town and special-ises in traditional Indian dancingwith a lo-cal twist. The dancers are committed to

bringing diversity to the Cape arts scene byexposing locals to different religions and cul-tures.“We aim to inspire and instil a sense of

beauty and increase the appreciation of Indi-an arts,” says senior dance instructor MayaKooverjee. “We are proud to share Indianarts with the community.”

The academy specialises in Bharata Nat-yum, a south Indianart form,which is taughton a workshop basis. The academy is also in-volved with the Footprints project, which fo-cuses on the social integration of refugeechildren using dance as amedium to supportpupils with barriers to learning.

A section of the M3 between Newlands andTrovato Link inWynberg is to be resurfacedfrom late January or early February.The roadworks will happen during night

time and take about four and a half months.The project, at a cost of R17m, should be

completed by mid-May.Ian Bowker, the head of pavement materi-

als and rehabilitation at Transport for CapeTown, says all construction work has beenscheduled to take place at night so that mo-torists are inconvenienced as little as possi-ble.“Work on the outbound lane will take

place between 19:30 and 05:30 and work onthe inbound lane will be done between 19:00and 05:00. Residents’ concerns regardingnoise levels have been taken into accountand limited use of jackhammers will be al-lowed until 23:00.“Unfortunately, reverse beepers are a le-

gal safety requirement butwehave specifiedthat they be dampened to try to minimisetheir impact. We have also specified regularpre-workmeetingswith thework crew to re-mind them about reducing on-site noise lev-els,” says Bowker.The project will repair and resurface all

parts of theM3 in the area thatwerenot com-pleted during the resurfacing done in 2014.The slow lanes in both directions will be

treated with three new asphalt layers whilethe fast lanes will receive two new layers.In both lanes the existing old asphalt will beremoved and replaced. The final layer willconsist of an ultra-thin friction course andwill ensure a durable road surface.

Officer Wynita Kleinsmith says the stationreceived a complaint of a shooting inprogress at Beulah Court.“Upon arrival at the scene officers found

a group of people standing next to a car. Inthe car they found the victim. The victimwas rush to hospital for medical care,”Kleinsmith says.He died at the hospital at about 03:00, she

says.“Awitness on scene saw twomen,who are

known toher, shootingat thedeceased.Theyare affiliated with the Junky Funky gangand the deceased was affiliated with theAmericans gang,” Kleinsmith says.Four cartridges were handed over to the

police by the community.Kleinsmith says a 37-year-old suspect was

arrested on the same day at about noon bymembers of Grassy Park’s serious and vio-lent crime unit.The second suspect is still at large.Voice of Parkwood chairperson Paul Phil-

ips says he is worried about the shootingsin the area.“We are going to mobilise the community

Roadafter theK9policeunit gave chase aftera stolen white Volkswagen Polo car throughthe streets of Grassy Park.Two suspects were arrested after a high-

speed chasewhichhad started inClaremont.Philippi police spokesperson Lieutenant

Lance Goliath says members of the K9 unitwent after a white Polo which had been re-ported as carjacked in Claremont.“Police spotted the car in Claremont and

in the attempt to stop the car the driver ofthe car sped off, resulting in a high-speedchase through the streets of Claremont, thenthrough Grassy Park into the Philippi ruralarea,” Goliath explains.

the high-speed chase in an attempt to stopthe car speeding down Weltevrede Road, hesays.“Speeding down Weltevrede Road the

Grassy Park police have asked residents inthe area to always keep recent photographsof their children and relatives.They have also asked parents to always

report a child or personmissing immediate-ly.Grassy Park police spokesperson War-

rant Officer Wynita Kleinsmith says theyhave had instances where parents reporttheir children missing only after two orthree days.“It is essential to take steps and start the

investigation into a missing person’s caseimmediately. When people report missingpeople days later, it will only make it somuch harder to reunite the person withtheir families,” Kleinsmith says.“People need to realise the sooner they act

and bring all updated and recent informa-tion, the better the chances of finding thatperson. It takes only three hours for some-body to gomissingand takenout of the prov-

ince,” she says.Take the following steps when reporting

a missing person:. Report a missing person at your nearestpolice station immediately.. Produce a recent photograph of the miss-ing person.. Give a complete description of the miss-ing person’s last whereabouts, clothes hewas wearing, as well as any informationthat can help the investigating officer.. Complete and sign an SAPS 55(A) form.This form safeguards the police from hoaxreports and indemnifies the police to dis-tribute the photograph and information ofthe missing person.. Get the investigating officer’s contact de-tails and send any additional informationthat might become available.“If a missing person is found or returns

voluntarily, inform the investigating offi-cer immediately,” Kleinsmith says.“Let us be vigilant and work collectively

to keep families together and safe,” she con-cludes.

12 at-risk boys when they attended acricket clinic on Friday 8 January.Voice of Parkwood chairperson

and religious leaderPaul Philips saysthe boys were invited to attend theclinic as the youth are easily targetedby gangs.

“This was a programme that washosted by St Augustines Cricket Clubin Elfindale. It was a clinic to presentyouth with an alternative to gangs.Our next step is to engage parents inthese kind of programmes as well, topromote and build family struc-tures,” he says.The boys who attended the clinic

were also treated to some local and in-ternational cricket talentwhenSouthAfrican fast bowler Vernon Philan-der and English left-handed batsmanand right-arm off-spin bowler MoeenAli visited the clinic.Philips adds they are in the process

of starting a similar project for girlsin the area.“We will be meeting to discuss a

similar project for girls in our area.This meeting will also incorporatethe plan to start a cricket club inParkwood,” he says.Philips says they will be looking at

ways to use public open spaces thatcould be used for a mini-cricket field.“We want a space where our youth

can go, be safe and be constructive.Wewill be looking at having the areasfenced off with a roof and artificialgrass for a playing field. This is allstill in its planning stages but wehope it will be successful,” he says.“We are looking forward to hosting

the next life skills programme and ul-timately having our youth reach fortheir dreams,” Philips says.

contained 30 .45-calibre, five 7.65 andfour .357 rounds.The mandrax found is estimated to

Philippi police spokesperson LieutenantLance Goliath says a total of 612 suspectswere arrested for various crimes, with 194of those suspects arrested on charges relat-ing to the possession of and dealing indrugs, including tik, heroin, mandrax anddagga.

A total of 104 homes were searched for il-legal drugs. Drugs worth R43 000 were con-fiscated.

“Police also clamped down on illegal li-quor outlets and arrested four suspects onliquor-related charges. A total of 80F of li-quor was confiscated,” Goliath says.

Roadblocks were held throughout theMitchell’s Plain policing cluster and 19fines to the value of R9 000 were issued.

Included in the 612 arrests made, Goliathsays, 17 suspects were arrested for crimesagainst women and children.

Police also confiscated five firearms and

ammunition and arrested five suspects forthe illegal possession of firearms and am-munition.Police confiscated a 9mm Beretta Parra-

bellum pistol and live ammunition from a33-year-old suspect, who was arrested inKlipfontein Road, Belgravia on Saturday 9January at about 03:50.“The serial number of the pistol had been

filed off.”An hour before this arrest, Steenberg po-

lice arrested a 30-year-old man in PeterCharles Street, Retreat for the possession ofan illegal firearm and ammunition whenthey confiscated a 9mm pistol and ammuni-tion which they found in his possession.The serial number of the pistol had beenfiled off.On Sunday 10 January at about 20:00 po-

A musical journey that started in Mitch-ell’s Plain has reached amajormilestone

with the launch of Carmen Xclusive’s debutCD.Many music lovers will simply know her

as Carmen Herbert or, if you’re a bit moreold-school, “Carmen from N2”.She laughs when acknowledging her asso-

ciation with the popular band.“Yes, that was a very important part ofmy

life, my education and training in the musicbusiness, but it started before I joinedthem,” she says.While, like somanymusicianson theCape

Flats, the roots of her talent are in thechurch, she used to sneak away to the Innon the Plain to listen to Rudolph Paulse andthe band Horizon.“I loved the music; it just meant some-

thing special tome and eventually I was per-suaded to enter a singing competition there

Housing tenants who are in arrears willface legal action this year.

Residents who rent houses from the Cityof Cape Town and who owe rent and ignoreall the reminders to pay are at risk – particu-larly if they are able to pay their rent.“Please use this opportunity to make sure

that you keep your abode,” says Chris Bar-nard, project manager at TraceOnline.The company has been contracted by the

City to provide tenants of City housing withinformation, help themwith indigent grantsand undertake collections.Barnard says there are already a number

of court cases for eviction orders for tenantswho have been in debt for a long time and

who have ignored reminders and opportuni-ties to make arrangements for payment.“It is unacceptable that there are so many

tenants who are able to pay, but simplyrefuse to do so,” says Barnard.

Unfair to othersAbout 260 000 people in Cape Town are on

the housing waiting list, who are preparedto pay, says Barnard.“It is unfair towards the thousands of peo-

ple who want to pay and who are preventedfrom getting a home by those who refuse topay. Another result of people not payingtheir rent is that there is not sufficient in-come for all the maintenance that needs to

be done. This is once again unfair towardsthose people who do pay,” says Barnard.The City has an indigent grant to subsi-

dise people who have no income or a verysmall income. Residents can apply for this.However, if they fail once to pay the de-

creased rental, the grant is immediatelywithdrawn.

ProcessThe process that is followed before some-

one is evicted is very fair, says Barnard.People are first of all reminded that they

are in arrears and that they have to pay.They are further informed about the indi-gent grant option.

Reminders are delivered to them person-ally.If they still do not respond, they will re-

ceive a letter from an attorney. From thenon the legal process will take its course. Thetenant is then also responsible for legal ex-penses.“That is why we seriously request people

to take immediate steps to make sure thatthey keep the roof over the heads of theirfamily.“No-one wants to start a new year with a

The Cape Town Softball Association (CTSA) is bat-tling to keep its head above water due to lack ofsponsorship. The organisation was once regardedas the most successful softball body in Africa, butthis crown seems to be slipping in recent years.In an in-depth, exclusive interview with CTSA

chairperson Noore Nacerodien, he admitted thegame of softball needs a change in fortune as thecommunity cannot afford to play sport anymoredue to the high cost of fees, transport and equip-ment.Lack of financial backing from benefactors has

now urged Nacerodien to do something about thisand “instead of begging for handouts to ensure thecontinued existence of our organisation, we mustget off our backs and look at ways of raising fundsto keep our heads above water”.

Golf day fundraiserNacerodien says one such fundraising initiative

planned is a “city of champions” golf day event atthe Mowbray Golf Club on 17 April.Nacerodien is making an appeal to golf enthusi-

asts to bust out their nine-irons to help CTSA.“For many years the selected provincial and na-

tional softball players had to pay their own way totournament championships.“The poorer clubs are suffering due to their cash-

strapped coffers to travel to venues to play and hon-our fixtures, with the result that many defaultshave occurred in recent times and over the years.Clubs have been struggling and cannot afford to payfor transport.“Another aspect and bone of contention is that

some of our affiliated clubs have little or no equip-ment. Thus formany years theminnow sport codes,like softball, baseball, etc., failed to obtain assist-ance from the corporate world.”Nacerodien is confident that the fundraising

event could help ease the burden.He is appealing to potential sponsors and compa-

nies to partnerwith the organisation to donate priz-es and goody bag items.Companies are also invited to purchase green

putting branding packages, ranging from R4000 fora one four-ball hole, and on the green putting surfa-ces fromR10 000 toR35 000 for either silver, gold andplatinum sponsorship packages.Nacerodien says he was told that the Mowbray

Golf Clubhad gained a reputation for hardly havingto close the course due to adverse conditions duringthe wet season.The fundraising event invites golf enthusiasts to

play an 18-hole game in four-person teams.Entry for the tournament costs R1400 per four-

Trials for the Cape Town youth surf-ing team will take place at Muizen-berg beach over the following fewweeks to select the best young sur-fers to represent Cape Town at thenational Grom Games.Trials are open to all girls and boys

aged eight to 15 years (they may notturn 16 during this year). The trialswill take place this Saturday andSunday, as well as 6, 7, 20 and 21 Feb-ruary.Entry costs R100 each,with surfers
