Eight mounted lights will soon be up inParkwood to ensure visibility around apopular crime hotspot.

Visibility in the area will be better just intime for the festive season.This comes after residents requested bet-ter lighting in Moosa Walk due to criminalactivity in the area.Ward councillor Melanie Arendse con-firms the go-ahead was given to have eightlights installed, of which one light will bemounted at the eight blocks of flats inMoosaWalk.

“This was heard at a previous subcouncilmeeting and we got confirmation that thisshould materialise in the next two or threeweeks. The area around Moosa Walk, fromParkwoodAvenue, is very dark and the add-ed lighting can only be a good thing,” Arend-se says.She adds residents raised their concernsover visibility in the area, spurring on therequest for the lights.“Residents from Moosa Walk approachedme and requested that these lights be put upat the flats. The area is known as a placewhere shootings occur,” she says.The lights cost R70 000, which has been al-located from the ward allocation budget.

“The residents are happy about the lightsbecause we know what a problem it hasbeen. Now they can at least have peace ofmind knowing that they are able to be awareof the surroundings and not go through thefestive seasonwith a dark alleywhere crimebreeds,” she says.One resident, who did not want to benamed out of fear of victimisation, says heis happy to hear the news.“Finally there will be light in an areawhich has been dark for a while. Hopefullywith this the criminals will be afraid to com-mit their acts in the well-lit area becausethen there is nowhere for them to run andhide,” he says.

The resident says he has witnessed manyshootings in theMoosaWalk circle and adds“hearing gunshots just outside yourwindowis a terrifying experience”.“It is unfortunate that our children haveto grow up like this. We have to duck anddive when shots are fired outside and whenyou look outside you see that someone haseither been wounded or killed,” he says.“We are happy that this is going to be donebefore the endof theyear.Wealsoappreciatethe effort put in by roleplayers to ensure thismaterialises and we are glad our pleas didnot fall on deaf ears,” the resident says.More residents expressed their elation,saying it was “long overdue”.

The False BayNature Reserve is receivinghelp fromanew specialised conservation

team.Five eland have been introduced to the

Rondevlei section of the Reserve to controlgrowth of dominant plant species and im-prove biodiversity.Some species have become overgrown,

which impacts on the vulnerable endemicflora and fauna.Although it is unclear exactly when the

last eland was hunted from the Cape Flats,it is estimated the antelope have not roamedhere for as much as 200 years.Eland are present in the Cape Peninsula

at Cape Point, but until now have been ab-sent from the Cape Flats, as most of the re-

maining natural areas are too small orhave complex social problems that makethe reintroduction of eland impossible.The three-year pilot project, a partner-

ship between the Cape Town Environmen-tal Education Trust and the City of CapeTown, aims to replicate the eland’s histori-cal natural migration patterns, which willalso play a vital role in the conservationof species and ecosystems.

Ancient migrationThe Gantouw project – after the Khoi

name for the ancient migration route, theGantouw Pass, that the eland and the Khoitookwith their livestock across theHotten-tot-Hollandmountains – has seen twomale

and three female eland donated from theElandsberg Nature Reserve in Wellington.Between three and fivemonths old, the ad-

olescent antelope are being trained to workwith herdsmen, so-called eland monitors.The young bucks are already starting to

show their personality, says project manag-er Petro Botha, and have each been namedbecause the team works closely with them.“When some of the staff joined us, they

didn’t even know what an eland was,” shesays. “Now they are conditioning them.”One of the female eland, Uniqua Khan, is

soft and loving and was the first to respondto training.“She’ll even come up to you and lick your

neck,” she says.

Gibbs, one of the males, has taken on therole of the dominantmale and is challengingand cheeky, while the other male, Mike –who was initially resistant to his new homeand training – has developed a love fortreats.In the four weeks since they moved to the

nature reserve, the group has displayed re-markable social bonding, Botha says.“When we released them into the field

they came back covered in ticks. But theynow have none. Those they couldn’t removefrom themselves the others removed forthem.”

Team playersThe project is proving to have further

reach than just controlling vegetation in theFalse Bay Reserve.If the project is successful, the eland will

be moved between the nature reserves andareas in Cape Town, mimicking natural mi-gration patterns.They will remain at each site for a few

months to browse, before moving on to thenext site, which will allow the natural pat-terns that shaped and sustained plants to berestored.In addition, cameras have been set up

around the reserve to monitor the project.These cameras have recorded previouslyunknown caracal in the reserve as well asthe resident hippos.Once the eland have been conditioned,

they will be released in a small area of thereserve to test the effectiveness on over-grown vegetation, before they are given therun of the reserve, Botha says.“It’s been exciting to see how the animals

lez’s sentiment has led to a senior citizenmassageproject byNGOThando’sTouchMaitland to care for the elderly in old-agehomes around the city.The project offers senior citizens free

massage therapy.It is still a pilot project for the next six

months, but they feel the smiles from theseniors are paying off already and thatit is a much-needed service for them.Residents of old-age homes are often

inactive, making it easy for disease to at-tack, says Thando Mngqibisa, founderanddirector of Thando’s Touch.With thenew project the elderly have a reason tosmile.The project was started in October in

three old-age homes, namely the Havenin Woodstock, CPOA Oakhaven in Hei-develd and Ekuphumleni Frail and AgedCare in Gugulethu.With the encounters that they have

had at these homes massaging the elder-ly they can say their feet are set on theright path.Mngqibisa says the events they had

are leaving the old people livened up.“Our past events have proven to be a

success. We can only grow from strengthto strength going forward. The smiles ontheir faces does nothing but confirmstheir gratitude.

“The patients we serve are often for-gotten, lonely and spend most of theirageing days in isolation. We want tochange this behaviour and mindset byusing the power of touch to give physio-logical and emotional support. Our aimis to decrease the feelings of isolation, de-pression, anxiety and pain,” she says.

Love, supportShe says her organisation is passion-

ate about seniors.“We are passionate about the aged and

wewant to give them an improved, high-er quality of life. This is a life-changing,spiritual journey, where there is a con-nection of the body, mind and soul. It isa great opportunity where senior citi-zens receive love, support, care andfriendship.“Senior citizens are an important part

of our lives and our very existence. Wewant to show this generation that a gooddeed, a simple act of kindness can makethis world a better place.”Though their main focus at the mo-

ment is on old-age homes, Mngqibisasays they are not neglecting seniorswithin the communities.“We started at old-age homes as these

are the people who need help the most.Wewill be going out as well in communi-ties and have a mobile truck where wecan help our senior citizens. We are tak-ing things gradually as we don’t havefunds at the moment. We know we willget there and change the lives of our oldpeople out there,” she says.They are inviting volunteers, spon-

sors, partners, artists and the communi-ty to join them at their events.

of South Africa’s rich history. Fittingly, itwas Kathradawho had an honour bestowedupon him by the City of Cape Town whichhas only been awarded to five others beforehim.Richard van der Ross, Nelson Mandela,

DesmondTutu aswell asBarack andMiche-lle Obama have all been recipients of theFreedom of the City, an honour for peopleheld in the highest esteem.A reluctant occupant of the City during

his 26-year imprisonment on Robben Islandand Pollsmoor for his role in the struggleagainst apartheid, Kathrada has calledCapeTownhis home voluntarily for the bet-ter part of the last 30 years since his releasein 1989.In a ceremony held at the Cape TownCity

Hall on Thursday last week,mayor Patriciade Lille honoured “Uncle Kathy”, as he isaffectionately known, for his contributionto South African society as a whole, recog-nising the sacrifices he has made since theage of 17.“The most powerful legacies don’t live in

things we can see or touch. They live in theway people think and understand. This isUncle Kathy’s legacy to us,” said De Lille.“He has helped us frame how we think

about ourselves and our country. He hashelpedusperceive and interpret ournation-al discourse in terms of reconciliation in-stead of racial barriers and the weight ofthose barriers lies heavily indeed.”As Kathrada approached the podium to

deliver his reception speech, the ceremonyattendees rose to honour the struggle hero

by chanting his name in unison.The Schweizer-Reneke-born Kathrada

dedicated his award to those whom hethinks, had they been alive, would havebeen more worthy recipients than him –most notably Dulcie September, AshleyKriel and Anton Fransch.Kathrada also shared the lighter mo-

ments of his time as the chairperson of theRobben Island council, remarking that thelate Ismail Meer remarked: “We struggledto get Kathy out of Robben Island; nowwhenever I phone Kathy, I am told that heis on Robben Island. We succeeded in get-ting him out of Robben Island, but we havefailed in getting Robben Island out of him.”Kathrada accompanied more than 300

groups to thememorial,whichhe suggestedshould be listed officially as one of CapeTown’s iconic destinations to visit.“Robben Island is one of the sites in the

freedom struggle, not the only one and notby any means the most important one. Wewere in jail and jail is difficult, but at leastwe were safe from the police. Our comradesoutside of jail were not safe. Imentioned thepeople and I mention them again – AshleyKriel, Anton Fransch, Dulcie Septemberand Chris Hani; they were not safe, theywere killed while we were protected.”Kathrada reminded the youth not to take

the freedom, that so many sacrificed theirlives for, for granted.“I can only wish that the young people

will bear inmind that the freedom that theyenjoy today, that all the avenues that wereclosed before under apartheid are open to-day. Our wish is that they will rememberthat freedom did not fall from heaven. Free-domwas fought for. Freedomwas sacrificedfor. Many people lost their lives. They havea responsibility to remember.”

A group of young people from various com-munities inCapeTownhave banded togetherin an effort to uplift, educate and help com-munities in the city.The Mahhabbah Foundation is an Islamic-

based organisation which consists of andmainly targets the youth to instil values oflove, respect and understanding in an effortto help communities work together more ef-fectively.The Foundation opens its doors for people

of all faiths, creeds and cultures as the orga-nisation’s youth representative, Hoosain Se-ria, says everyone is welcome.“The theme of our organisation is knowl-

edge, love and assistance,” Seria says.The foundation was established in 2012 by

Moulana Abdurragmaan Khan and ShaikhMuhammadPhilander under the guidance ofHabib Umar bin Muhammad bin Salim binHafith from Yemen.The foundation offers anyone, especially

the youth, opportunities for spiritual devel-opment.The foundation hosts weekly events on

Wednesday and Friday evenings where be-tween 150 and 200 youngsters attend the pro-gramme.“We have youth that have changed their

lives.“Whatwe believe is that in order to change

society, be the change that you want to see.First change yourself, then your family andthen spread it out to the larger community,”says Seria.In addition, annual local spiritual retreats

are hosted, aswell as an international retreatin December.“The scholar that is going to come this year

is Sayed Salem bin Umar bin Mohamed binHafieth. He is the son of the renowned saintand scholar Habib Umar bin Hafieth, whowas here last year. When he is in Indonesia,he gets about 100 000 people to attend histalks.”Seria says the retreat won’t consist solely

of prayer and teachings.“Basically, what we do at the retreat is

have spiritual discourses, gatherings ofprayer andwe also include extramural activ-ities for the youth to take part in. We will behaving soccermatches, archery, horse ridingand a lot of different activities, so we won’tonly be teaching and praying thewhole day.”This year’s international retreat will take

A few parents in Parkwood have recentlyattended a parenting skills workshop in

preparation for the 16 Days of ActivismAgainst Women and Child Abuse.The workshop, initiated by the Safeline

Organisation, was aimed at parents in thearea to inform and empower them shouldthey be confronted with a case where achild discloses that theyhave been sexuallyabused.Community development worker in the

Grassy Park area, Nicole Martin, says theprogrammewaswell received by parents inthe area when the workshop was held overtwo days recently.“We want to empower parents in cases

where children disclose to them if theyhave been sexually abused. Parents weregiven the protocol anddo’s anddon’ts in theevent that their child or a child opens upto them,” Martin says.

Effective communicationShe adds parents were targeted with this

programme to open a line of effective com-munication between parents and children.“Often we find that children aren’t confi-

dent enough to speak to their parents aboutbeing sexually abused. It is often teachersor other family members and the parentsare often the last to find out,” she says.“But with this programme we have

helped parents to ensure that they areready to deal with the situation appropri-ately and to give them the best support andguidance,” Martin explains.The programmewhich has been running

in various areas including Lavender Hilland the greater Grassy Park area.“This programme will also see to it that

our children have a safety net and that theywon’t be afraid to tell their parents. Whenparents foster a good communication chan-nel between themselves and their childrenthey will be able to be proactive to preventabuse and keep their children close,” Mar-tin says.

Speak upShe confirms these type of programmes

were aimed at parents to also ensure an in-flux of referrals from different areas.“We knowmany people are not reporting

this and this should not be the case. Peopleshould speak up about this so they may getthe help and assistance they need. Peopleoften do not know where to go when theyare confrontedwith sucha situationandwewanted them to know who they can ap-proach,” she says.Martin confirms referrals are accepted at

their Grassy Park office but a walk-in sys-tem is also available.“Mostly we receive referrals from the po-

lice and hospitals, but we also accept walk-ins. People have to be aware of what struc-tures and organisations are available intheir communities. Our clients also receivefree counselling after being referred,”Mar-tin explains.She adds more programmes are planned

Local landmarks have taken topspot in an international photo-

graphic competition, with photosof the Huguenot monument inFranschhoek and the Cape TownCity Hall winning the top threeprizes.

The annual competition, whichstarted in the Netherlands in 2010,saw over 230 000 photographs sub-mitted by 6600 entrants from 33

countries this year. South Africahad a lower turnout this year thanin previous years with 424 photo-graphs submitted by 40 entrants.

The competition looks to sourceimages of monuments for use onWikipedia under a creative com-mons licence, which means theycan be downloaded and used forfree.

The competition is run by Wiki-MediaSouthAfrica, a local chapteroffering support to editors of andcontributors to the site.

The competition is vital in gener-ating content, Douglas Scott, Wiki-Media SA director, says.

“Often these monuments don’teven have sites on Wikipedia andif they do, there is often no pictureto go with it. Wikipedia only ac-cepts content donatedundera crea-tive commons licence, so it’s likedonating it to the world,” he says.

Over the years the competitionhas produced thousands of imagesof local monuments, Scott says.

The competition also partnerswith Heritage Western Cape,which manages around half of thecountry’s monuments, Scott says.

The competition not only gener-ates images, but is also a way tomonitor these sites with minimalexpense to theheritage body, he ex-plains.

The competition also serves toencourage Wikipedia pages in Af-rican languages. This year anaward was also given for the use ofa photograph of the Molteno damon an Afrikaans page.Due to the declining number of

entries, WikiMedia may moveaway from a monument-basedcompetition next year, Scott says.

The organisation is consideringrunning a photographic competi-tion on natural wonders.“We havemany natural wonders

and a huge need for images to illus-trate articles on rivers and moun-tains, where the need for contenton monuments is decreasing.”

pho (a pseudonym) who came to NazarethHouse aged 1, having spent most of his lifein hospital – a victim of parental drug abuseand neglect.Sipho was hospitalised when he was just

six months old and remained there for al-most a year before the court ordered he beplaced at Nazareth House, which providesa home to abused, abandoned, terminally illand severely disabled children.During an early session on the lawn be-

neath the palm trees, the occupational ther-apist (OT) noticed Sipho’s toes curl up – likehe was walking on grass for the first time.A year down the line and he has under-

gone an incredible transformation. Nazar-eth House has ensured Sipho gets his dailymedication and makes visits to the clinic.Having reached developmental mile-

stones and his healthcare needs well man-aged, the court ruled Sipho was ready to beplaced in foster care and OT Ashleigh van

Zyl was on hand to introduce Sipho to hisnew family. Social workers will continue tomonitor his progress.“We are so proud of Sipho,” says Werner

Two Hout Bay primary schools are partof a new project aimed at quality public

schooling in the province.The project was recently launched by the

provincial education department.Provincial minister of education Debbie

Schäfer says this pilot project will test anew model of schooling that brings addi-tional management skills and innovationinto the school system through non-profitpartnerships that improve the quality ofteaching and learning in no-fee schools.“The pilot is being launched with five

schools next year. The pilot will continuefor a period of five years subject to the per-formance of the partners and the schools,”she says.

Participating schoolsThe initial participating schools are Or-

anjekloof Moravian Primary School inHout Bay, Silikamva High School in HoutBay, Eerste River Primary School in ForestVillage, Happy Valley Primary School inBlue Downs and LangaHigh School in Lan-ga.The initial school partners are Leap Sci-

ence and Maths School, Mellon Educateand Oceans Education Foundation.Schäfer says the programme seeks to im-

prove the quality of education at publicschools, demonstrate effective models ofpartnerships in education, strengthen pub-lic school governance and accountability,develop teachers and implement interven-tions aimed at the improvement of the qual-ity of public education for pupils from low-income communities.Schäfer says her department is commit-

ted to partnerships with stakeholders tomaximise resources and relevant expert-ise.“Wewere excited when a group of funder

and support organisations, including theMillennium Trust, Michael & Susan DellFoundation, Ark andDGMurray Trust, ap-proached us to test a different no-fee publicschoolmodel andassistwith financing.Outof this was born a pilot project, which wehave called Collaboration Schools,” shesays.These support organisations, called oper-

ating partners, will ensure intensiveschool-level support to teachers and princi-pals through training, additional resour-ces, monitoring and regular feedback.

The education department will continueto play its critical role in overseeing schoolperformance and holding the schools andoperating partners accountable as part ofthe public education system.

While support from the department willbe integrated with that provided by the op-erating partner, with schools continuing toreceive funding, infrastructure and servi-ces such as transport and nutrition fromthe government.

Governing bodiesSchools that have chosen to participate

in the pilot have agreed that the operatingpartners will constitute the majority oftheir governingbody. This is crucial for thedepartment to hold the school and operat-ing partner accountable.All teachers at the participating chools

will remain departmental employees andno teacher in any school that chooses to be-come a collaboration school will be expect-ed or forced to resign from the department.“I am particularly excited about this

project. The donors and partners, recognis-ing the transformative power of educationto heal and build South Africa, wish to con-tribute to improving education outcomesin public schools,” Schäfer says.She believes schools will not only benefit

financially but also on a human resourcelevel as both donors and partners are com-mitted to increasing the quality of teachingand learning to substantially improve theschool’s educational outcomes.

TheCity of Cape Town’s health directorateis preparing for the anticipated increase

in the number of diarrhoea cases – particu-larly in children under the age of five whoare most vulnerable to the disease.The “season” of increased diarrhoea cases

is between November and May each year.“While diarrhoea is a common ailment, it

is important to watch for signs of the dehy-dration associated with it, especially inyoung children, as dehydration can be fatalunless promptly corrected. The aim of thetraining sessions with traditional healers isto facilitate a dialoguewhichwill ultimatelyensure prompt referral of diarrheal cases toclinics. I amvery enthusiastic about this ini-tiative which empowers traditional healers

with the correct information to assist withthe proper treatment,” says SiyabulelaMamkeli, mayoral committee member forhealth.Environmental health practitioners also

visit informal settlements on a weekly basisto monitor potential health hazards in theliving environment and to educate residentson measures to reduce the spread of diar-rhoea by minimising oral-faecal exposure.It has been found that the simple activity

of frequent hand-washing with soap and wa-ter is highly effective in preventing thespread of diarrhoea aswell as respiratory in-fections.“Children with diarrhoea should not be

made to wait at clinics. They need to report

at reception and be fast-tracked for treat-ment immediately. I appeal to parents andcaregivers to seek medical attention fortheir children immediately should theypresent with any of these symptoms, be-cause delays in accessing care can be fatal,”adds Mamkeli.

SymptomsSymptoms of dehydration in children in-

clude: passing little urine, a drymouth, a drytongue and lips, fewer tears when crying,sunken eyes, weakness and being irritableor lethargic.Symptoms of severe dehydration in chil-

dren include: drowsiness, pale or mottledskin, cold hands or feet, very few wet nap-

pies and fast, shallow breathing.Health officials also make an extra effort

to engage with traditional healers to updatethem and bring them on boardwith early in-terventions. This is the case in the Mitch-ell’s Plain, Klipfontein and Khayelitsha sub-districts.City health officials have been engaging

with traditional healers in these areas byhosting training sessions. Since the start ofthe season, a total of 38 traditional healershavebeen trained in theMitchell’s PlainandKlipfontein subdistricts.During the last season, 25 602 diarrhoea

cases were recorded at healthcare facilitiesacross the city. Just under 2% of these pa-tients had severe dehydration as well.

After making it to the top five of the “Sing

for the King” gospel voice competition, Ec-lectic Soul have already released their debutsingle “You Are”, which was written andproduced by Brilynn from CrazyWorld Pro-ductions. He is also the man behind the restof their album with its fresh pop sound.“The Cup-a-Soul album is an album very

different to many other gospel albums,”Whitney says, adding that it shows off their

vocal abilities and versatility in terms ofgenres.

“The album is definitely for all ages. It hasa very modern sound and hype but yet hasserenity to connectwith listeners onan emo-tional level.”

Blanche and Whitney have also had theopportunity to be mentored by former Liq-uiddeep frontman Zyion, who features on

Because their event falls in the middle ofthe 16 Days of Activism campaign againstwomen and child abuse, the women are alsoshowing their heart by partnering with theSafeline child abuse treatment and preven-tion centre.Eclectic Soul will be donating a percent-

age of the ticket sales to Safeline, which pro-vides counselling to young victims of sexualabuse along with a supportive service totheir families and creates awareness aboutabuse in the community.Music fans attending the launch are also
