After months of pleading for support fromgovernment, the army was finally deployedin Ottery on Friday.
An area lockdown took place as OperationFiela came to the Ottery B flats section justafter 04:00. The first arrest took place in Ox-ford Court at about 04:10 when a 17-year-oldgirl was arrested for the possession of 63packets of tik which was hidden between herbreasts. The army worked with the policeand law enforcement in an extensive opera-tion at the flats, much to the satisfaction ofmany residents.
Grassy Park community police forum(CPF) spokesperson Philip Bam says thecommunity welcomes the action by authori-ties because it has been “years since thecommunity requested the police to call inthe help of the army”.
“We asked them to weed out gangsterismand drugs in the troubled flats area of Ot-tery, Parkwood Estate and Lotus River. Thesuspected drug houses and gang hideoutswere targeted first while the army threw acordon around the area,” Bam says.
He adds he witnessed house-to-housesearches which were followed by arrests.
“A few arrests for possession of drugswere made and one firearm was found. Weare hoping that more guns were found,” hesays.
Bam says the operation was received wellby the community, but some residents wereunhappy. “Many of the residents welcomedthe operation and said it was something theyhave been requesting for a long time. Oneor two were unhappy about the manner inwhich the forces came into their homes andwe do apologise for any inconvenience,” hesays. Bam says the CPF welcomes this inter-vention and says that, no matter what thesearches revealed, “it sends a clear messageto the gangsters that the police have the re-sources to strike and could repeat this kindof operation”.V Continued on page 2.

Water worries in new homesCHEVON BOOYSEN
@ChevonBooysen
Shoddyworkmanship, faultywater fixturesand minimal response from officials. These are some of the complaints that
give residents from phase one in the NewHorizons project grey hairs. After moving into their homes just over
a year ago, a few residents say they have al-ready encountered problems at their newhomes. They want their complaints to “re-ceive the attention it deserves”.One resident, Carmen Petersen, says her
water metre went blank for two weeks.“I noticed that thewatermetrewasn’t giv-
ing a daily reading as it should and the wa-ter was cut. I then logged a call and nothingwas done for two weeks, even after I got areference number,” Petersen says. She explains during the two weeks her
water was disconnected she had to borrowwater from her neighbours.“For the entire two weeks I had to look
around for water from my neighbours. Itwas a terrible inconvenience.”Petersen confirms her water has been
connected for the past week.
Another resident, Michelle Calvert, saysshe has also had sporadic water supply forthe past few weeks.“My water metre is also faulty. I logged
a call and it was done on Saturday 9 Mayalready. I received a reference number andeach time I follow up I just get a ‘sorry forthe inconvenience’. It is not on and I wantit to be fixed because I can’t do daily taskswith interrupted water supply,” she says.Nadia Williams says she has also experi-
enced problems with her water supply.“My toilet and kitchen have had water
blockages. And at times the water stays offfor a week,” she says. She adds she has hadto go without water for two to three weeksat a time.“I then had to pay a plumber R700 to come
out and fix it. I did not want to be withoutwater for any longer. Residents from thiscommunity are already poor and we cannotafford to pay plumbers,” she says. These residents say they are inconven-
ienced by the faulty water pipes and fix-tures.Community spokesperson Ziva Moodley
says he has been informed about residents’complaints.“I intend to fast-track the system. But
there is a process we follow. Residents alsoneed to be more responsible with the stuffthey dispose of via the plumbing,” Moodleysays. He adds that when complaints are re-
ceived they are passed on to the City for ac-tion and if needed “faulty metres are re-placed”.V What are your thoughts? Starting with the word“Post”, SMS your views to 32516. SMSes cost R1.

Safety is a numbersgame, says CPFCHEVON BOOYSEN
@ChevonBooysen
Grassy Park neighbourhood watches arecoming together to make the area a safer
one.However, community police forum (CPF)
chairperson Fuad Titus said during a meet-ing onWednesday last week that the organi-sations should rather focus on increasingtheir numbers.“We have to work on recruiting more peo-
ple into the existing neighbourhoodwatchesas well as work on launching more neigh-bourhoodwatches in our four sectors. At themoment I know of 20 neighbourhood watch-es in our area and we need to increase thisnumber,” Titus said.He added residents should be encouraged
to join the organisations as it ensured thesafety of the community. “Our neighbour-hood watches are the first people to knowwhat is happening in our area before the po-lice,” he added.Titus confirmed these meetings would be
heldmonthly andwould include all four sec-tors in the Grassy Park policing area, whichincludes Parkwood Estate, Ottery, LotusRiver and New Horizons.
Newly-appointed neighbourhood watchcoordinator John Goss, who also serves onthe CPF as deputy chairperson, added it isenvisioned that the crime fighters will con-duct operations with the local police.“Weare forminga channel between thepo-
lice, CPF and neighbourhood watches tofight crime. We intend for watches to goalong on operations,” Goss said.Titus addedall newneighbourhoodwatch-
es and recruits would get training. With many representatives present from
different neighbourhood watches, membersraised concerns about stop-and-searches,but Goss said he “is not keen on the idea”.“Our neighbourhood watches should be
very careful on how they handle residentsin the area. Although I agree with a civilianarrest and actingwithin the boundary of thelaw, I still am not keen on stop-and-searchesconducted by neighbourhood watches asthis is a free country and people should beable to walk where they wish,” Goss said. This statement was met with mixed reac-
tions and neighbourhood watch representa-tives said stop-and-searches would continuein their areas “because it works”.V What are your thoughts? Starting with the word“Post” send your opinion to 32516. SMSes cost R1.

ACape Townmedical doctor, Amit Ghosh, has teamed up with Indian adventurer-
cyclist Somen Debnath.Ghosh (29) met Debnath, who hails from
Sunderban-Kolkata in the province of Ben-gal, three weeks ago at a gathering at theShri Siva Aalayam Hindu Temple in Ry-lands.Debnath is onanaround-the-world bicycle
tour in aid of HIV/Aids awareness. Hereached South Africa earlier this year – the94th country on his trip. He has already cy-cled 112 600km.“My goal is to travel 200 000km and visit
191 countries, meeting 20 million people bythe end of 2020,” says Debnath.“From 2009 to 2012, I cycled across Europe.
I have travelled in 10 countries in theMiddleEast while South Africa is the 10th Africancountry I have visited.“During my travels I have experienced
many close encounters which were life-threatening. At one stage I was blindfoldedand strapped to a chair in darkness by theTaliban. But, overall, I generally cameacross good people, which has made my tripthus far not only interesting, but also fulfill-ing,” says Debnath. While Ghosh is not joiningDebnath on his
journeys, he will be helping to document theadventurer’s travel stories.“After my first meeting with Somen I was
intrigued by his determination. I’m fromBengali decent and share his culture. Myfamily has strong roots in India. Because hisnatural eloquence is in Bengali I want to as-sist him to create his stories in English. Wealso share a common vision about advocacyaround HIV/Aids,” says Ghosh.Debnath was recently the guest of JP
Smith, mayoral committee member for safe-ty and security. Debnath handed over an In-dian flag to the City at a ceremony held atthe Newlands cricket ground. The flag wasreceived by Nashua Cape Cobras player

ing “nuts” for his travels. “One can onlyhave admiration for this brave youngman,”said Smith.

Kids’ thoughts on violenceLocal Grade 10 pupils took part in ananonymous postcard campaign by theSaartjieBaartmanCentre forWomenandChildren to explore themotivation for vi-olence.Here are some of the reasons given by
the 600 participating pupils:
Reasons for violence. When I am impundent and out of lineand get smacked for it.. When someone sexually harasses me.. Mymother deserves it when my fatherhits her..Whenmen smackmybumbecause I amdressed inappropriately.. In Islam the husband can hit his wifeonly if she disobeys more than thrice.
He’s not allowed to hit her in her face.
Reasons against abuse. Women should not be beaten, whetherthey are at fault or not. Everyone makesmistakes. Women do not deserve to be in-jured for a silly mistake like burningfood. Men are just petty sometimes.. A women should not be beaten, ourConstitution and Bill of Rights says so.Everyone is equal, no-one is perfect, weall make mistakes. Women deserve re-spect, love and care and not to be beaten.. When a woman does something wrongfor her husband, they should talk aboutit and not fight about it.. No one deserves to be beaten. It is notright.
Abuse ‘seriously damages kids’The Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women
and Children has raised the alarmaround escalating levels of violence againstchildren. The Centre attributes the higher levels of
violence to an increase in violence in gener-al, with children being caught in the cross-wire – be it gang-related or domestic vio-lence.“Despite all of the awareness raised, at
least three children that we know of havegone missing over the past two weeks. Thesystem is broken and sadly children, ourmost vulnerable members of society, areeasy targets for predators,” says ShaheemaMcLeod, director of the Centre.
MotivateUsing Child Protection Week, which is thisweek, the Centre launched an anonymouspostcard campaign, aimed at exploring themotivation for violence. The campaign, named “I deserve it”, tasked600 Grade 10 pupils to describe the circum-stances that would warrant domestic vio-lence.Responses varied, from the unacceptabilityof violence, no matter the situation, to vio-lence being deserved when dinner wasn’tready or an expected (but unconfirmed) af-fair had taken place.McLeod says they are not surprised by the
findings of the campaign. She says oftenthere is a disconnect between what peopleknow to be wrong and how they behave.“Our findings revealed that regardless of
the community and the school, the pupil re-sponses very much depended on the envi-ronment in which the child had been
raised.”Stories of child abuse are commonplace in
South Africa; one out of four children areabused daily and it has been estimated thata child goes missing every five hours.Despite the country’s child protection
laws, policies and programmes, high levels
of abuse and violence are reported on a dailybasis.
Damage“Children are not only affected when theythemselves are the victims of violence – ex-posure to violence, for example towards themother, can be seriously damaging to theiremotional psyche,” says Zeenat Osman, child counsellor at the Centre.“Children who have witnessed domestic
violence may experience a variety of emo-tions ranging from guilt to helplessness, which in turn can lead to behavioural prob-lems or social difficulties.“The postcard campaignwas very insight-
ful in this regard; it provided an opportunityto explore the ramifications of violencethrough an anonymous platform.”
Help for abuseGrade 10 pupils from Sea Point High School,Leadership College, Gugulethu Comprehen-sive SecondarySchool andNormanHenshil-wood High School took part in the postcardcampaign.Established in Manenberg in 1999, the
Centre helps victims of violence and abuse.Typical problems faced by the children whovisit the Centre include abuse, neglect, dis-placement, behavioural problems, sub-stance abuse and difficulties at school.

Opportunity to learnlanguage of the futureEver wanted to list “coding” as a skill youhave mastered?Africa Code Week is a one-of-kind educa-
tional initiative that will be piloted at theCape Town Science Centre from Saturdayto Thursday next week. The event will provide an opportunity for
free workshops for educators and free cod-ing (computer programming) workshopsfor children between the ages of 8 and 11years.Coding is the literacy of the digital age
and the best way for young children to be-come fluent is to learn and play. While technology is transforming educa-
tion and learners learn how to use it, the re-ality is that they rarely learn how it works. As a language coding helps make sense of
how things work, explores ideas and howto make things. Every interaction betweenhumans and computers is governed bycode. Programming is therefore fundamen-tal to the understanding of how technologyworks.
“Importantly, coding contributes to de-veloping key skills in mathematics andproblem-solving in the classroom environ-ment. It also encourages teamworkandana-lytical thinking, all essential 21st centuryskills for our youth,” says Julie Cleverdon, director of the Science Centre. In preparation for Africa Code Week, the
Centre is calling on all teachers, parents, students, businesses, NGOs and education-al institutions to takeup the opportunity forthese free workshops, which will preparethem to implement coding classes for chil-dren.The train-the-trainer workshop is two
hours long and will take place on Saturdayand Sunday at the Science Centre. Free one-hour coding workshops for children willtake place between 1 and 4 June. For more information call Leigh on

From clerk to lawyerLIEZL BENJAMIN
His grandfather predicted that a youngAthlone police clerk would one daybecome a lawyer. And recently that
prediction came true when Russel van Roo-yenwasadmittedas anadvocate in theCapeHigh Court.
Van Rooyen (32), who hails from Sher-wood Park in Manenberg, attended Wyn-berg Boys High and after he matriculatedthere weremany careers that piqued his in-terest, but in the end his grandfather’s pre-diction and a cousinwhowas already a law-yer, won him over to law.
In 2006 he enrolled for his LLB degree atthe University of the Western Cape (UWC)while working as a clerk at the Athlone po-lice office.
Van Rooyen admits that studying whileholding down a full-time job has been a bigchallenge. He credits his success to sur-rounding himself with “positive people”and having a strong support system.
“It was difficult working and studyingpart-time, but what kept me going was myfirmbelief inGodand the support I receivedfrom my family.
“My grandfather knew I was stubborn, from a very young age already – and whenI get told I can’t do it, I try even harder toprove that I can do it.”
In 2011 his determination paid off whenhe graduated from UWC with his LLB de-gree and in 2013 he hit the law books againwhen he did a six months’ legal practicaltraining certificate at the University ofCape Town.
So other than the prediction of his grand-father, what is the allure of the law to VanRooyen? He describes himself as a “champi-on for the underdog”, one who hates to seeinjustices done to his fellow man.
“Law is applicable everywhere and forme the aspect of protecting the human
rights of others has always been an interest-ing one.”
Advocate Van Rooyen is considering hisnext step. “I would love to become part ofthe legal services in the police and whoknows, I might even end up at the nationalprosecuting authority!”
Van Rooyen laughs when asked whetherhe would ever cross over to become a de-fence attorney.
He says there are lots of people who havebeen wrongfully accused and they too havethe right to seek legal counsel – once againappealing tohis senseofwronging the right.
The plight of the downtrodden is a strongmotivation for Van Rooyen – and with thesupport of his loving family who knowswhere his sense of protecting the rights ofthe underdog will take this ambitious andjust-minded legal eagle. . . After all, eaglesare known for soaring to great heights.
A beaming advocate Russel van Rooyen infront of the Cape Town High Court.

Dignity for the deceasedI have called in myconcerns relating to KlipRoad cemetery (“Moreburials”, People’s Post, 14April) and they are asfollows:
We had buried mygrandmother two weeksago. My aunt had gone tothe grave for quiet time, but she didn’t recognisethe grave as all the flowershad been stolen from thegrave. Obviously, forsomeone who is newlygrieving, this is quitetraumatic.
I called to ask if this wasnormal and was informedabout the rampant theft atthe graveyard.
I then enquired aboutgeneral safety and was toldthat this is also a concern.
I personally find grave-yards very depressing, butthe newly acquired landfor grave sites is quitedesolate, sandy andunkept.
I am informed that there
is a plan to create pathsand build benches.
Could I kindly ask if youcould divulge a bit more asI probably would want togo visit the grave site, probably not take flowersor be weary of my sur-roundings?
My mother settled inGrassy Park more than sixyears ago and becausemost of our family liveshere, it was the obviousplace of burial given thatwe probably could havechosen any other place.
I was quite shockedabout the underbelly ofwhat happens at thesesacred sites as all of theabove-mentioned hadobviously not crossed mymind.
I hope that in some waywe can restore dignity tomourning the dead as thisis a very important part ofhumanity.
ELTON BEZUIDENHOUT,Grassy Park
Salute to crime fightersPlease allow me as public rela-tions officer of the Grassy ParkCommunity Police Forum (CPF)and on behalf of the forum topublicly express our sincereappreciation for the wonderfulwork being done by the activeneighbourhood watches in ourpolice precinct.
These women and men sacrificetheir time – mostly at night –while we are all sleeping soundlyto protect our neighbourhoods. They receive no remuneration andyet they serve with so muchdedication. We also wish toexpress our appreciation to theWestern Cape Department of
Community Safety and the City ofCape Town’s Safety and Securitydepartment for their support.
We would like to encourage ourcommunity to form neighbourhoodwatches and so become part of thesolution to crime in our area.

Debate requires cool headsI have noted with disturbingconcern that people opposed toeuthanasia are becoming histrion-ic in their approach to the debateand refer to people supportingeuthanasia as killers and murder-ers.
This type of attitude does notmake for healthy debate.
The department of health, whois also opposed to the right to endone’s life when afflicted with aterminal illness, is guilty ofdouble standards. It freely advo-cates abortion. The doctorscarrying out the procedure are notreferred to as killers and theprocedure is not called “physician-
assisted foeticide” but, rightly so,termination of pregnancy.
People who are in favour of thisright come from a range ofeducational backgrounds and arequite clear that they do not wishto be subjected to the pain ofdying from the complications ofterminal illness. This should notbe classed as the same as anable-bodied person committingsuicide due to depression; this is adifferent set of circumstances.
Doctors willing to assist patientswith this request are not cold-blooded killers but are verycompassionate and accept thatmedical science has its limita-
tions. To end one’s life, whenthere is no hope, has been deemedunethical and immoral. Whomakes such a decision on what isethical and what is moral in theface of enormous human suffer-ing? Ethics and morality meanvery little to someone who isseverely afflicted by incurablepain. They are the only ones whofully understand what it is to livein agony, waiting for death, notsome wise philosopher in his/hercosy study, full of books thatmake him/her look erudite andknowledgeable about everything.
DR E RAPITI,Mitchell’s Plain
Attitude drives road accidentsI cannot understand howpeople still drive recklessly, still speed and still drink anddrive even though they see orread how many peole arearrested for this.
The carnage on the roadsstill carries on unabated evenif the law enforcementagencies announce they willbe executing roadblocks orcheckpoints.
The reason for this non-compliance to the rules of theroad or safe driving isattitude. Attitude is definedas “A position of the body ormanner of carrying oneself, indicative of a mood orcondition”. Let’s go one stepfurther – with attitude isanother lane called arrogance:“Excessively convinced ofone’s own self-importance”.
These two conditions putthe foot hard on the accelera-tor. I have personally seenhow others, and sorry to saymyself too, experiencedanother vehicle just drivingtoo slowly for our liking orturning without using anindicator in front of us, thenarrogance and attitude makesus aggressive. Then the footis plunged hard on the pedalto exact road-rage revenge.
The type of vehicle onedrives also triggers attitudeand arrogance for somelaw-abiding citizens and thenthe vehicle of status orstature becomes an Arabianstallion ridden by a take-no-prisoner gladiator.
Let’s not forget the driverwith the pimp-my-ridevehicle, the super souped upvehicle – once the key isturned the peacock attitudekicks in and when the pedalpaddling is enhanced thearrogant, untrained racingdriver makes the road hisracing track with no regardor respect for other roadusers.
Lastly, the one for the road, that one is normally way andabove the legal limit and thenthe attitude is those famouswords “I can drive my car”.That arrogant nature makesyou the most dangerouspotential killer on the high-ways and byways.
I request the courts toincrease the penalties ofthose found guilty. We needto see those fines in ourmedia and social networks ona monthly basis.

Cape Town performance troupe Taare isbringing Bollywood to your doorstep.
Founded by Athlone’s Ahneesh Valodia,Taare aims to promote and preserve the In-dian arts in “an original and creative man-ner”.
By using Bollywood song and dance,Ahneesh says they make Indian arts moreaccessible or appealing to audiences as wellas the troupe’s dancers, helping them main-tain a link to Indian culture and traditions.
Ahneesh explains that the term “Bolly-wood” refers to both traditional and mo-dern Indian dance styles.
“It’s actually any style you can think of,”he says, adding: “It’s more the creative useof different dance styles.”
Ahneesh started dancing when he waseight years old and says he knew then alrea-dy that that’s what he wanted to do for therest of his life.
His plan was to pursue formal training af-ter matric, but his “health started actingup”.
Although he was diagnosed with muscu-lar dystrophy, a degenerative muscle disea-se, Ahneesh performed as much as possiblein his teens while he still could, until it gotto a point where he needed to swop the stagefor a wheelchair.
Dancing had become the centre of his lifethough and he couldn’t give up on hisdreams, so he decided to switch performingfor teaching and choreography.
Knowing that “there is a way aroundthings” is what helped Ahneesh cope. Bystarting the troupe, he gets to help otherdancers achieve their dreams.
Bollywood has always been Ahneesh’sfirst love. As a child he used to watch Bolly-wood movies and try the dances himself. While he’s a classically trained dancer, hisBollywood choreography is self-taught.
He started spreading the word aboutstarting a troupe in 2012 and contacted dan-cers that he knew were not actively perfor-ming at the time.
With word of mouth Taare grew and therest, as they say, is history.
In the beginning, Taare would ask dan-cers to book spaces at UCT residences forrehearsals. Today, however, they have a setvenue at Rustenberg Girls’ High Schoolwhere they rehearse every Saturday from10:00 to 12:00 with extra rehearsals when
they are preparing for a performance.Ahneesh says the troupe of 30 dancers is
made up of matriculants, students and pro-fessionals. “They come from all walks of li-fe.”
He says the audition process is open toanyone, with no previous dance experiencenecessary.
Taare performs a few times a month andthe group performs its own productionsalong with shows at charity, community orcorporate events.
Ahneesh says, to his knowledge, Taare isthe only Bollywood dance troupe in CapeTown. While there are Indian danceschools, Taare operates more like a dancecompany.
The group runs on a non-profit basis, rely-ing on sponsorships and donations. At themoment, they are specifically looking forsomeone to help with their social media ma-nagement.
Ahneesh explains that his troupe existsto provide a service to the community. Theyprovide a platform for dancers to maturetheir talents and bring Indian dance to a wi-de range of audiences.V Visit www.taare.co.za or www.facebook.com/TaareDance for more information about Taare and itsshows, to arrange an audition or to find out abouthelping the troupe in any way.
