the venue.The meeting, called by the Ocean View/

Mountain ViewHousing Project Support or-ganisation, took place at the Ocean ViewHigh School hall, which was packed withover 100 beneficiaries. A total of 543 subsi-dised houses are to be built.Beneficiaries demanded answers from

chairperson Klaas (Piet) Present about theslow progress and changes which had beenmade to the plans.“Ons is hard besig om hierdie huise gebou

te kry,” says Present.Some people walked out of the meeting.The recipients will be from Mountain

View, the informal settlement on the out-

skirts of Ocean View, as well as Ocean Viewitself.Building has started on the first phase of

89 houses located on erf 683 – on land whichwas already subdivided for housing in thelate 1980s (“Building on housing project”,People’s Post, 30 April).Present said geysers had not been budget-

ed for in thehouses, but that thehouses fulfilthe requirements for subsidised housing, in-cluding being slightly larger than the 42m²basic requirement.Some backyard dwellers also protested

that the houses were too small.But Denise Izaks, vice-chairperson, says:

“Dit is klein, maar dit is ’n huis. It is landfor free and a house for free. In MountainView we are living in a hell hole. There areno ceilings, no floors, no water and no toi-lets.”Izaks says she has been fighting for 27

years for the houses, enduring broken prom-ises and disappointments such as the pro-claiming of the Bokram Spruit, initially ear-marked for housing, as a nature reserve.Present adds he believes the people were

more “disappointed” than angry becausethey felt “changes had been made withouttheir consultation”.“We are working very closely with all the

partners to ensure the project is a success,”says Present, adding these include the Cityof Cape Town, the provincial Department ofHumanSettlements andMellonHousing Ini-tiative.In an interview, Izaks told this reporter

one of the changes not mentioned at themeeting was the redesign of the roof struc-tures as the original design would be toocostly.At the meeting complaints were also

raised about the workers employed at the

site as part of the Expanded Public WorksProject, which forms part of theMayoral Re-generation Project.This aims to employ residents who will be

trained in stonemasonry to work on thehouses, therefore, also providing incomeand skills development. It was alleged someof the youth who are part of this project takedrugs, drink and work slowly.Adding that drugs and alcohol are not be

allowed on the building site, Present says:“I cannot discriminate against anyone,whatever substances they may be taking.”It is understood construction is expected

to take two years and that the formal agree-ment was signed last week by City and Prov-ince. Prior to this signing Mellon Housingwas working at its own risk.Present says the City has appointed an at-

torney to decide on the allocation of thehouses.

scended on the sports field in theearly afternoon, before whirring offagain, only to return a short timelater – attracting hoards of curiousonlookers. US President BarackObama was due to arrive in thecountry on Friday for a three-dayvisit.

Nikki Green says: “Wooohoooo,we heard all this racket and, lo andbehold, the Obama contingency ofhuge helicopters landed on thesports field in front of our house inFish Hoek.”She adds they ran down to the

field when they heard the helicop-ters coming over and landing on thefield, where they stayed for a shorttime.Green says she believed they

were due to land in the area againon Sunday.Charles Dagnall says he thinks

the two types of choppers were the

the principal of the Si-nethemba Special CareCentre in Masiphume-lele from this month.

Sinethemba is themain project of FishHoek/ Kommetjie/Noordhoek Welfare As-sociation.

The association fo-cuses on working withpeople with specialneeds in the Simon’sTown Magisterial Dis-trict, specifically inMasiphumelele andOcean View.

The area incorpo-rates Simon’s Town,Red Hill, Scarborough,Kommetjie, Sunnydale,Glencairn, Noordhoekand Fish Hoek.

The association says there is a great needfor specialised care for children and fami-lies facing the adversities of living with afamily member with special needs.

The optimum normal development of ayoung person is that much more of a chal-lenge for one with a disability – and themountains that parents face are huge.

Sinethemba Special Care Centre is a daycare centre in Masiphumelele, providingcare for children with severe and profoundspecial needs.

It also offers counselling, recreational ac-

tivities, public educa-tion, community out-reach, creative stimula-tion programmes,transport, adult andyouth groups with spe-cial needs, exercise andoccupational thera-pists, as well as parentsupport.

CEO Lezanne Raathsays: “Catherine’s expe-rience and commitmentto parents and childrenfacing incredible chal-lenges in our communi-ties will be an asset tothe work of Sinethembagoing forward.”

An occupational ther-apist by training, Pittcontinues her family’sinvolvement in supportof those with specialneeds.

Her mother, JoyceChevalier, was the driving force behind theestablishment of the Joyce Chevalier Cen-tre for the Handicapped.

Peninsula Canoe Club stalwart GraemeSolomon has emerged as a title con-tender for the Berg River Canoe Mara-

thon after the withdrawal of the reigningchampion, Hank McGregor.

Solomon, a Marina da Gama resident,won the prestigious four-day race in 2001,but failed in his next nine attempts whileMcGregor rose to prominence.

Now a return to form, partnered with Mc-Gregor’s absence, has seen the 40-year-oldmove into title contention once again.

Solomon isn’t reading too much into hisrecent victories despite winning the lasttwo races on the Berg River.

“Obviously it’s nice to win races, espe-cially when you get to my age. You take eve-ry race you can win; it’s not like I shouldbe winning all these races,” says Solomon.

“But I don’t read too much into it, becausethey are one-day races. The Berg River isa four day race. The races I have won havebeen on a very full river, which is my pref-erence as I am a bigger paddler than mostof the opposition.

“The Berg River could be medium to lowif it doesn’t rain from now until then. How-ever, it is nice to have a few wins under the

belt for confidence.”Solomon claimed the Gouda to Bridget-

own race on the Berg River on Saturday 1June and won the Swartland Canoe Mara-thon on Sunday 16 June to add the SouthAfrican K1 Championship title to the K2 ti-tle he won with Sean Rice on the Breede Riv-er in September.

McGregor, nine-time Berg River champi-on, pulled out of the race to participate inthe inaugural Surfski World Champion-ships in Portugal from Friday 12 to Sunday14 July.

While Solomon knows McGregor’s ab-sence “opens up the race”, he would preferto have the champion taking part.

“You don’t want to be the guy who winsand then people say: ‘Hank McGregorwasn’t there’. At the end of the day, that’sin no one’s control you can only race thecompetition. It would still be very nice towin,” he says.

Solomon knows he will not be the onlyone who could benefit from McGregor’s ab-sence and views Lance King, Pierre-AndreRabbie, Dusi runner-up Eric Zondi andformer World Marathon champion BenBrown from Great Britain as his biggestcompetitors.

He has been concentrating on his “ownbuild up” as he pre-pares for what maybe his last chanceto win the BergMarathon.

“Three years agoI thought it was theend of my careerwhen I wentthrough a difficultpatch.

“All of suddenI’ve had spurt. I amthe holder of SouthAfrican K1 and K2Championships at40, which is thepinnacle of my ca-reer. So if I win theBerg it would be anice feather in thecap.”

The Berg RiverCanoe Marathonwill take placefrom Wednesday10 to Saturday 13July.
