Fish intestines and faeces litter the graveyard and a foul stench of urine hangs in the air, much to the dismay of mourners who come from Athlone, Lansdowne, Manenberg and the sur- rounding areas to pay their respects. Residents, like Moena Mustapha, are calling on the authorities to take im- mediate action. “It is terrible to see that our loved ones’ final resting place has been turned into this mess,” a disgust- ed Mustapha says. “We should respect the place where they have been buried, but this is not the case. It reeks of fish and there are fish intestines all over. When I went there recently I noticed that a part of the vibracrete wall had al- so been taken down so that the fish- mongers can get the water they need from the tap inside the cemetery. Va- grants are also using the grounds as a toilet.” Mogamat Maged, a trustee on the Vygekraal Muslim Cemetery Board, says that they are also fed up with the mess. “It’s despicable what is happen- ing to the cemetery. The fishmongers have been trading here for years, but they have no sanitation or water and make use of the taps in the cemetery. This has become worse as they have now broken the wall of the cemetery for quicker access. I have fixed the wall nu- merous times but when I return later, it’s smashed again.” He says maintaining the cemetery is “a real battle” as the vagrants who sleep along the cemetery’s wall in Low- er Klipfontein Road throw rubbish on to the graveyard. “I have spoken to the Athlone fishmongers and the vagrants but it falls on deaf ears. People think the trustees are not doing their job, but this is something we need to deal with on a hourly basis.” Maged says an added problem is the flowers being stolen off the graves in the middle of the night by drug addicts and re-sold the next morning. But while the filth, dirt and smell have been blamed on the group of homeless people who are squatting on the other side of the cemetery wall, finding the culprits responsible for the decompos- ing fish innards has proven quite a task. Abdullah Mcleod, the president of the Athlone Fish Mongers Association, ve- hemently denies responsibility for the state of the cemetery. “We have been trading here for about 30 years and we would never be that disrespectful. It is other fishmongers and people who come in the middle of the night and create a mess here – not us. The guys standing in Klipfontein Road do not throw the fish intestines on the graves.” He says the fishmongers clean their fish at their trading area and dispose of dirt in bins which are collect- ed by the council. However, Magedcounters that be- fore the excess fish is collected by council, birds “pick at it and scatter it on the graves”. Councillor Magadien Davids says the issue will be addressed “immedi- ately”. “We have received complaints from residents, and we are sorry for the in- convenience this has caused. We are starting to build the Athlone Fish Market next month which should alleviate the stench of the fish being sold. However, as for intestines being dumped close to the graveyard, it was established that it is other fish- mongers doing that and not the ones who stand at the ceme- tery.” He says he is in talks with law enforcement to get the va- grants removed. “Vagrants are sleeping under a tree close to the cemetery, but we will be looking at ways to get them removed and placed into shelters permanently.” Big stink over state of ceme- tery The Vygekraal Muslim Cemetery. REYANA STEYN

AFTER an amazing four-year journey ofreporting on stories in the Athlone com-

munity, the time has come for me to saygoodbye.

From the day I started you welcomed me intoyour homes, hearts and lives, and allowed meto tell your stories.

The work of a journalist is to tell other people’sstories, to share their experiences with others– thank you for allowing me the opportunity ofdoing so.

Thank you for sharing so openly and honestlywith me.

You’ve helped me fulfil my role as a reporterto inform, educate and entertain the community.

It has been a true honour and blessing hearingabout your joys, trials and triumphs and extend-ing this to a larger audience.

This has made me wiser as a journalist andit’s also ensured my personal growth.

You’ll never know just quite how much impactyour very nature has had on me.

When I began my journey with you, many peo-ple warned me of social ills such as drug abuseand gangsterism being rife in the community, butstrangely what they failed to tell me was that Ath-lone is a community that is passionate not onlyabout each other’s wellbeing but also about striv-ing towards excellence. If Athlone had a theme

it would surely be unity.Crime happens everywhere, in the places

you least expect, and so do love and camara-derie.

During my time with you I saw communitymembers standing together and joining forceswith police and other like-minded groups whenyou battled gang violence, abuse and anythingthat posed harm or threat to the wellbeing ofthe community. Your strength in numbers de-manded attention.

I witnessed on numerous occasions how youstood up for your rights and refused to growaccustomed to injustice, how you fought (withwords) against any wrongdoing.

You operated like a family, supporting eachother, celebrating each other’s successes andlending a helping hand to those in need.

I’ve seen goodhearted residents helping theunderprivileged even when they themselveshave struggled to make ends meet. I saw theyouth take ownership of their lives and excelin their passions academically, culturally andspiritually.

I’ve been touched by heartbreaking storiesof abuse and other acts of crime such as rape, murder and robbery. You’ve opened my eyesto things I had previously overlooked. For fouryears I was part of your extended family calledAthlone, for that I thank you dearly.

I want you to know that it’s been an absoluteprivilege getting to know each one of you andthat the friendships I’ve made will always becherished.

Although I will be moving to work in theNorthern Suburbs, the residents of Athlone,Manenberg, Heideveld and surrounding areaswill always have a special place in my heart– thank you for all the experiences I’ve had, they mean a lot to me.

Now is merely the time for a new chapter tobegin in my book called life. This, however, of-fers little comfort when I realise that while I’mexcited about my new venture, I’m likewisesaddened that my chapter with you has

reached its end. But as the saying goes: “Allgood things come to an end.”

I strongly encourage all of you to keep up thegood work; every little bit helps to make yourcommunity a safer place. It is my sincere hopethat you remain ambassadors for the areas inwhich you reside.

To the seniors, youth, councillors, police offic-ers, and all other various organisations, I wishyou well.

It is with bitter sweetness that I leave you withthe heartfelt words of Whitney Houston’s hitsong: “I hope life treats you kind and I hope you’llhave all you dream of. I wish you joy and happi-ness, but above all this I wish you love”.

I will miss you dearly.

You’ve opened my eyes, Ath-lone

FAREWELL: Reyana Steyn, Athlone.

IN a bid to better services and build stronger rela-tionships with the community, Manenberg policestation commander Brigadier Andre van Dyk con-tinuously meets with residents. The meetings takeplace once a month and residents have a chanceto raise their concerns. “It is important to hear whatthe community’s needs are and what our short-comings are,” he says.

“If any resident feels that they were not treatedwith dignity and respect, they should try and con-tact me as soon as possible so that the problemcan be addressed.”

He also gave a stern warning that police officerswill not hesitate to take action against communitymembers who are involved with illegal gang activi-ty and drug distribution.

“Action will also be taken against anyone abus-ing and misusing children. Parents whose chil-dren experience drug addiction need to come for-ward and seek the advice of trained counsellorsand drug support groups.

“This community is strong and vibrant and I’mhighly optimistic that together we will find a solu-

tion and overcome our challenges,” says Van Dyk.The date for the next meeting has not yet been

selected.

“WATCH your back when withdrawinglarge amounts of cash – people withcriminal intentions may have their eyeson you.”

This is the warning issued by Manen-berg police after four robbers held up aManenberg couple at the Heideveld rentoffice last Monday, making off withR15 000.

The incident occurred shortly after thepair drew the money – which was to havebeen used for the expenses of a localchurch – from Standard Bank in VangateMall.

After doing some shopping, the twoheaded for the rent office, and on their ar-rival they noticed two men approachingtheir car.

Warrant Officer Ian Bennett, thespokesperson for Manenberg police, saysthat at the same time, a blue Sentra drovepast them and made a U-turn in the road.

“The man’s wife was already approach-ing the rent office’s gate and the two menthen threatened her with a gun,” he says.

The men then grabbed the money bagand ran towards the Sentra.

The driver was apparently also car-rying a weapon, and once the tworobbers were inside, the car sped off.

“Members of the community havebeen warned to make alternate arrange-

ments when large amounts of cash needsto be paid to a service provider.

“Withdrawing large amounts puts your-self at risk,” says Bennett.

People’s Post tried to gain commentfrom Vangate Mall management, but wasunable to do so by the time of going toprint.

Ross Lindstrom, spokesperson forStandard Bank, says the bank takes stepsto safeguard their clients.

“Safety measures are in place at thebanks, but when they leave, the banks arenot responsible. These crimes are com-mitted by someone who knows the per-son’s routine and when the money will bewithdrawn.

“We urge people to not withdraw largesums of money and then do shopping orrun other errands.”

A case of armed robbery has beenopened and is under investigation.

Anyone with information on the robber-ies are urged to call Manenberg PoliceStation on (021) 699-9400 or Crime Stopon 08600 10111.

BEWARE when strangers offer assistance atATMs as they could be out to clone your bank

card and withdraw your cash. This happened to Lansdowne resident Adeelah

Ederies when she withdrew money from an ATMat a garage between St John’s Road and ChurchStreet on Friday.

A well-dressed woman approached Ederies aftershe had withdrawn her money and told her that hertransaction wasn’t complete.

She told Ederies to look at the screen which read“A language should be selected”.

“I found that odd, as I had my money and bankcard. I asked the woman who she was and she toldme that the same thing had happened to her beforeand that she could assist me,” she says. “The well-spoken woman told me to insert my bank card intothe ATM and complete the transaction. Somethingdidn’t feel right, but I was in a rush as my childrenwere waiting for me in the car and I did as the wom-an said.”

Ederies placed her bank card into the ATM andthe woman pressed buttons, stating she knew howto sort out the problem. She told Ederies to inserther pin code, which she did.

“When she was done I took my bank card and

went to the car and drove off, but I felt uneasy andI told my family when I got home. Something toldme to take a photo of the woman, but I didn’t,” saysEderies.

“On Saturday I went out and when I wanted towithdraw money, I was unable to do so as it statedthat the withdrawal limit for the day had been ex-ceeded.”

She realised she had been conned and immedi-ately went to the police station to report the matter. After having bank statements printed, it was estab-lished that the thieves had withdrawn a total ofR2 500 in Nyanga. “We also wanted to view thevideo footage at the petrol station but the cameras’view doesn’t reach to where the ATMs are situat-ed,” says Ederies.

She warns people to safeguard themselvesagainst ATM scams and not to trust strangers astheir cards could also be cloned.

“People who commit such crimes know how toconvince innocent victims to get what they want.Always be on guard.”

Constable Nkululeko Mnyaka, Lansdowne po-lice spokesperson, says a case of theft is being in-vestigated. He urges residents to safeguard them-selves when they are withdrawing money fromATMs.

A FATHER who is losing his sight ishopeful that his missing daughter will

return home so that he can see her onelast time.

Dalene Coetzee (53) disappeared from herBridgetown home in November last year aftershe left in an unknown car with two men.

Since her disappearance the family hasregularly contacted hospitals, mortuaries andshelters, and has even started searching forher body in local fields.

But no trace of her has been found.“It has been traumatic for us as we don’t

know what happened to Dalene,” says heraunt, Margie Jeneke (62).

“All we want is for someone to contact usso that we know where she is and if she’sokay. On the day that she disappeared, shemoved out and got into a blue Renault. Shetold me they were taking her to a place inRondebosch and that she would contact meafterward. But she never did.”

Jeneke says the family waits every day forCoetzee to phone or walk through the door.

“Her 77-year-old father is waiting for her

and keeps saying she will come home.Dalene was not married and also has no chil-dren, but her whole family misses her, espe-cially her father.”

Jeneke says the uncertainty of not knowingif a loved one is alive and well is harrowing.

“We pray to God that she is in a safe place. It’s tormenting that we don’t know what hap-pened and we need closure. She is a sweet, helpful person and loves talking. She is alsovery fond of children.”

Anyone who knows the whereabouts ofCoetzee is urged to contact Jeneke on(021) 692 1220, on 083 543 4868 or073 304 9256.

AFTER an anxious five-month wait, 12lucky students gave the air an emphatic fistpump after being selected as beneficiariesof the Voice of the Cape Bursary Fund.

The task of narrowing down 90 names to alist of 12 was a tough task for the MuslimBroadcasting Corporation’s bursary panel, which was made up of people who are in goodstanding in the academic field.

The fortunate students’ names were recent-ly announced at a star-studded event hostedby Auric Auto BMW in Claremont.

Nijema Hayat, the convenor of the bursarypanel, says the selection was not an easy taskas each letter of motivation that accompaniedan application was more moving than the last.

The bursary fund was set up not only to offeropportunities for people within the VOC struc-ture, but also to encourage more students toenter the media and broadcast industry in or-der for VOC to always have human resourcesto continue their functioning.

Auric Auto’s dealer principle, Teddy Goven-der, says the company’s involvement was partof its corporate social investment initiative. “Itis important to support the youth as tertiary ed-ucation is extremely expensive. This makes ita little easier for them to concentrate on their

studies and get good grades.”Auric Auto kicked off the bursary fund by do-

nating R10 000 towards the initiative. This wasadded to the R100 000 from proceeds of theannual VOC Festival and donations from busi-nesses and individuals of about R20 000.

BUSINESSES are encouraged to make use ofstudents from further education and trainingcolleges seeking work placement to combatthe shortage of adequately qualified staff.

Thanks to the College of Cape Town, thesestudents can be tried out at no cost to compa-nies, while at the same time giving the employ-ee the opportunity to develop their skills for ashort period.

As work placement officers, the college’s as-signment is to place students who are regis-tered for their Vocational National Certificate,National Diploma and other college pro-grammes with employers for periods of work-place-based experience and in-service train-ing.

The college’s goal is to place students forbetween five and 10 consecutive days in eachyear of study for workplace-based experienceand 18 months for in-service training. Duringthese placements, employers are asked to ori-entate students to their companies and allowthem to work alongside employees doing jobsrelated to the students’ field of study.

For many young people, obtaining this kindof work experience has been life-transforming.They have developed a better understandingof their chosen career and how it is practisedin the workplace. This has motivated them towork harder and succeed. Many students haveforged relationships with employers that led toimmediate offers of employment after gradua-tion. Employers benefit, too as students are asource of future employees that you can getto know before hiring.

By hosting students, employers get achance to influence the training that the col-lege provides and slant it more towards theneeds of the industry.

Employers can also get points on their com-

pany’s BEE scorecard. Should a company bewilling to host two or more of its students, thecollege would gladly assist by facilitating theplacement process.

Workplace-based experience placement forthe Vocational National Certificate occurs dur-ing the April, June/July and September/Octo-ber vacations. In-service work placement forNational Diploma students are scheduled forNovember/December.

These experiential training sessions arealigned with the Department of Higher Educa-tion and Training’s requirements.

No financial contribution is expected fromthe host employer for workplace-based experi-ence.

However, a nominal stipend to studentscompleting their 18 months in-service trainingwould assist them in satisfying financial com-mitments incurred during the in-service train-ing period. The college hopes that more com-panies will join them in this important exercise.Companies are invited to contact the collegeto explore how placing its students can helpgrow their business and bottom line.

For more information on work placement atthe college, phone Winston Damons on (021)404 6700. The College of Cape Town also of-fers bursaries for registered students withsound academic results who are in need of fi-nancial assistance.

For more information on bursaries, contactthe college’s information line on 086 010 3682or email [email protected].

LOVING, passionate and a people’s person– that is how ward 45 councillor Faiza Ad-ams will be remembered by those whoknew her.

Adams (63) was admitted to hospital fourweeks ago with lung failure. She was placedon life-support but died on Tuesday.

She was buried at the Johnston Road Mus-lim Cemetery and people from all walks of lifegathered to pay tribute to a woman whoserved the communities of Manenberg, Gugu-lethu and Oliver Tambo Square for manyyears.

Councillor Adams also served on PhoenixHigh School’s governing body and was in-volved in various local committees.

Her husband, Gamat Adams, is still dis-traught a week after her death.

“It was traumatising to see the woman Iloved for 43 years in so much pain. On herfinal day, she said to me: ‘My husband, I can’ttake it anymore,’ and I told her it was okay, because she was in God’s hands.”

He says she was passionate about every-thing she did. “She was gold to me. She wouldhelp everyone she could and would nevercomplain about anything.

“She was a good woman, wife, mother andcommunity worker. For all those years it wasa blessing to have her as my wife – I couldn’task for anyone better.”

Gamat says he will miss her company terri-bly. “We spoke for hours during the day andbefore we went to sleep. I miss her dearly. Shemeant everything to me.”

Cape Town mayor Patricia de Lille com-ments: “We have lost a selfless soul who dedi-cated her life to serving her community with

passion. Her dedication to helping the less for-tunate members of her constituency was asymbol of compassionate leadership un-matched by most community leaders.

“We will honour her legacy by continuing towork hard to build a more caring city.”

. A by-election is expected to take placewhere representatives of all political partieswill run to be elected the new councillor ofWard 45. A date has not yet been announced.

Everyone looking to renew their spent CFLs for free

raise your hands!

www.eskom.co.za/idm

Five years ago, we managed to convertmillions of South Africans to using CFLenergy saving lightbulbs and saved youmoney. Now, five years later, we’reback to change your energy savers thathave reached the end of their life.Continue to use energy savers tocollectively save South Africa’s energy.

Energy saving lightbulbs have anenvironmental benefit because they cutyour lighting cost by using less electricityand last up to eight times longer, resulting in a reduction in greenhousegases. The small amount of mercury that

energy saving lightbulbs contain is almostused up by the time the lightbulb is readyfor disposal. So try not to break the

lamp and dispose of CFLs at participatingretailers.

Spent CFLs can be exchangedfor new ones in two ways:

a. There will be a door-to-door exchange(people will come to your door to dothe exchange).

b. Self exchange points will be set up incertain areas, where you will be ableto go and do the exchange.

Don’t miss out!Save energy and save money!

The exchange period will run from February 2012 to March 2012.

SUMMER JACOBS

EXCITEMENT filled the air in Manenberg asone of its elders, Sadia Duncan (nee Ve-

lasco), celebrated her 80th birthday with a lav-ish party on Thursday.

A truly remarkable woman, this senior citizenepitomises strength and courage, having over-come more obstacles than most people face ina lifetime.

Better known as “Mamma”, the local can argua-bly be described as invincible, having survived alife threatening haemorrhage and the infamoustornado which hit Manenberg in 1999.

Born on 23 February 1935, Sadia was a middlechild of sixteen children and grew up in Kensing-ton. At 29 she married Cassiem Duncan and hadfive children.

Just before the new millennium, the family suf-fered a terrible loss when their house was de-stroyed by the tornado which swept throughManenberg.

In less than five minutes the twister destroyedtheir home of 30 years, shattering all the windowsand tearing off the roof.

The Duncan family had to relocate to a govern-ment house provided for victims just a few streetsaway from their demolished home.

But Duncan’s suffering did not end there, as afew months later she suffered a severe haemor-rhage which almost claimed her life. Aysha Bren-ner, Duncan’s eldest granddaughter, recalls: “Thedoctors told us that if she survived the plannedoperation there was a chance she may be blindor paralysed. They even warned us that she couldend up in a permanent state of vegetation. Wewere very worried because she already had anangina heart and had suffered more than threeheart attacks,” said Brenner.

Yet Duncan, in true survival spirit, made a re-markable recovery with all her bodily functions in-tact.

However, there was a change in her personalityas she stopped doing the things she enjoyed do-ing before, such as cooking.

“After the operation we could not leave heralone at home because she was a danger to her-self. I remember one day she put a plastic bucketon the stove while it was still on,” says Brenner.

Another shattering blow came in 2002 when af-ter 51 years of marriage, Duncan lost her hus-band to a stroke. Fortunately the widow was notalone with 22 grandchildren and 35 great-grand-children to keep her busy.

Despite all the adversity this incredible womanhas faced, she smiles away as one grandchild af-ter the other showers her with birthday wishes.

“I grew up thinking Mamma was my mother, butduring my teenage years I found out that she wasactually my grandmother. I wasn’t upset – I under-stood that my mother was too young to take careof me.

“I thank God that Mamma took me in and raisedme as one of her own children. It’s as a result ofher upbringing that I am the person I am today. She gave me a 21st, an engagement party anda huge wedding, and today I have been marriedfor 22 years.

“I felt that after so much adversity in her life sheneeded some recognition and I wanted to find away to show her how grateful I am for all the sup-port she’s given me and the entire family through-out the years. She’s definitely a force to be reck-oned with,” says Brenner, smiling proudly.

Duncan celebrated her 80th birthday at herhome where her family had a gaajad (Muslimprayer meeting) for her.

Thereafter the party kicked off and supper andsweet things were served.

Eighty cheers for Mam-Eighty cheers for Mam-mama

DO YOU turn a blind eye to sneaky-looking people eyeing the local elec-tricity infrastructure? Start taking aspecial interest as damage to electri-cal infrastructure will have a nega-tive effect on you and your neigh-bourhood.

Unnecessary damage caused to theelectricity network, street kiosks, distri-bution boxes and other electrical equip-ment as a result of cable theft and wilfuldamage causes a disruption of electric-ity while also creating potentially dan-gerous situations, especially for chil-dren.

The cost to repair this damage, andthe resultant loss of income, meansthat there is less funding available for

new electrical infrastructure, the City ofCape Town’s electricity departmentwarns.

In addition, electricity tariffs areforced to increase due to unnecessaryexpenditure. Theft of cables from livenetworks, besides being life-threaten-ing to the perpetrator, can cause electri-cal surges on the network which coulddamage the appliances of other elec-tricity consumers. The City, generally, does not entertain claims in such cas-es, as it is not responsible for these sys-tem surges. Tampering with meters isan offence in terms of the ElectricitySupply By-law and those caught havingtampered or bypassed the City’s me-ters will have to pay for all the costs in-curred to reinstate the meter to an oper-

ational state. The perpetrators will berequired to pay to have their metermoved to a new location, and the Citywill also recover lost income. The de-partment has teams which carry out on-going inspections of meters.

Report all instances of vandalismwhere tampering with meters is sus-pected by sending an SMS to 31220and provide details of the incident.Blow the whistle on cable or equipmenttheft by phoning 0800 222 771. All in-formation received will be treated in thestrictest confidence.

It was initially alleged that the disrup-tion, which occurred during President Jacob Zuma’s centenary speech, was by a duo from the ANC Youth League, but the group’s spokesper-son, Floyd Shavambu, lays the blame squarely at the party’s doorstep.“The ANCYL is concerned by the manner in which ANC members inthe Western Cape disrupted the lecture,” he says. game lasted 10 minutes and the finals were be-tween Norma Road Primary and Blossom StreetPrimary, with the final score being 1-0.

The event was arranged by the local police, who joined hands with Sports Against CrimeSouth Africa and various other roleplayers.

Dad to sue after failed vasectomy. When your wife found out she was expecting,

you were supposed to encourage her to terminatethe pregnancy. We should know that sterilizationis not 100% safe. Love your miracle baby like youlove the other 10. After all these years, praise Godfor her life and the joy she will bring into your lives.Be blessed. Norma

. Raymond Jacobs, count your blessings. Thatlittle angel is a gift from the Almighty. No doctoror operation can be blamed for what the Almightyhas planned for you. Love, care and protect thatgift. You are so blessed – don’t waste your energyto fight. Rather spend it on your beautiful miracle.

. I hear what Raymond is saying. I would liketo adopt the little baby from Mr Jacobs. My wifeand I are willing to take over the responsibilitiesbecause we can’t have a child of our own. Nasief

. Raymond Jacobs, long time ago the Lord or-dained that you will be the father to 11 children. No vasectomy will stop His will. Thank the Lord– don’t sue the state.

. Clearly you put your trust in the health depart-ment and not in God. Don’t you believe that every-thing is in God’s hands? So why do you want tosue the government?

Local thoughts. Mario Wanza is more involved with land grabs

than cleaning. Dirt dumped at the sub station inUsk Road has been lying there for a month. Eddie,Manenberg

. I would like people to know about the guys sell-ing heavy duty plastic bags at the traffic lights onthe corner of Oliver Tambo Drive. I just bought abag of 50 for R20. When I got home there wereonly 14 in the bag!

. Those young boys who raped the girl must goto jail. If such a small mind can do something likethat, they will grow up to be even worse. Have nomercy on these kids.

. I was disgusted when I woke up on Mondaymorning – garbage day – only to find that someonedumped their rubble next to my fence. A neigh-bour’s son had to help me pick up about five blackbags full and put the lot in our bins. What kind ofpeople live around us? Vink Weg, Bridgetown resi-dent

You are what you eat. A Christian is a follower of Christ and Jesus

never ate swine flesh as He obeyed all of God’scommandments. Jack

. We live in a country filled with diversity andyet we refuse to accept each other. We have manydifferent beliefs and religions, so whether you eatpork or not is no-one’s business. Who made youthe judge? Why don’t you practice your religionand keep your nose out of other religions. OnlyGod can be our judge.

. Eat pork! “Do not let anyone judge you by whatyou eat or drink; or with regard to a religious festi-val...” (Colossians 2:16).

Just a thought. I am an unemployed mother of two and I am

upset, because these days you are hired by insti-tutions dependant on the way you pay your bills, not by your skills and knowledge. The economyis going to suffer greatly because young produc-tive people are sitting at home.

. My husband and I are ardent sport fans andare especially interested in rugby and cricket. Weare both retired and we will be looking forward to

reading Liam Moses’ sport columns regularly. Wealso want to wish Liam a happy and long stay withPeople’s Post. Good luck! Maz

. Why do we pay R9 for a loaf of bread? I thoughtthe government is regulating the prices/ Or arethey regulating their salaries?

. Budget speech – what a joke! Look at the fraudand corruption in the ANC provinces. Are youmaking up for all the Apartheid years? I’m in thewrong profession.

. My sympathy goes out to teachers who worklong hours, experience annual policy changes, have a bigger workload and whose job descriptionhas changed to nurse and social worker. Did yoursalary increase?

These public meetings will be interactiveand affected suburbs will be informed of thereasons for the proposed name changes.

A Naming Committee was convened lastyear under the chairmanship of the MayoralCommittee Member for Transport, Roads andStormwater, Brett Herron, to manage namingand renaming of streets, buildings and publicplaces in the city.

This committee will look at new namechange proposals, as well as a series of sug-gested name changes remaining from previ-ous years.

“In 2007, the City received a set of 31 pro-posed new names, of which four have beenimplemented. We invite the public to com-ment on the remaining 27 name changes be-fore a proposal is made to council,” said Her-ron.

The proposed name changes will be sub-jected to a public participation process. Publicmeetings will be held to offer communitiesevery opportunity to comment.

Seven of the streets proposed for renamingcut across multiple sub-councils and wards, impacting a city-wide target group.

These streets will require a more rigorouspublic participation process.

The seven streets are:. Hendrik Verwoerd Drive. Jip de Jager Street. Vanguard Drive. Lansdowne Road. Jan Smuts Drive. NY1 in Gugulethu. Willie van Schoor Drive“The process to change street names will

be as inclusive as possible. We will distributelocalised pamphlets in every street where aname change is proposed, and provide asmuch information on the process as possi-ble.”

If anyone is directly affected by a streetname change we want to give them thechance to comment,” he said.

MAKE SURE your driving instructor hasthe necessary documentation authorisinghim to teach you the rules of the road – andthat he is charging you an acceptable fee.

Traffic officers will be conducting inspec-tions on driving schools and instructors to tar-get dishonest businesses which offer K53driver tuition without the necessary accredita-tion.

All driving schools and instructors musthave an instructor’s certificate that verifiesthat the instructor is competent in the instruc-tion of K53 driver training.

Applicants who are trained by uncertifieddriving school instructors often fail their drivinglicence tests because of the inadequate levelof training received, the municipal traffic de-partment warns.

These businesses often charge exorbitantfees and by teaching the learner drivers incor-rectly, contribute to endangering the lives ofinnocent road users.

Traffic Services enforcement teams will beintensifying its focus on driving instructors, with a special emphasis placed on enforce-ment around the Driving License Testing Cen-tres across Cape Town.

The department encourages all learnerdrivers to use the services of reputable drivingschools. Driving schools and instructors mustbe in possession of a valid instructor’s certifi-cate, a valid driving licence for the particularclass of vehicle and a roadworthy vehicle. Formore information visit the City’s Licensing andMotor Vehicle Registration website onwww.capetown.gov.za/vehiclelicensing, orcontact the City’s call centre on 086 010 3089.

The site features a list of registration offices,a “Frequently Asked Questions” section andan online vehicle licence payment facility.

A GARDENER struck gold when he walkedaway with 30 weeks’ worth of groceries for himand his seven family members thanks to Pickn Pay.

“I saw the Win a Million Points promotion ontelevision, but I never expected to win”, says 31-year-old Light Phiri Spliano.

The Smart Shopper “Win a Million” competi-tion ran from Monday 30 January till Sunday 26February. All customers had to do was buy oneof the items listed as a participating product andswipe their smart shopper card when entering. For each participating product bought, you gotone entry into the daily draw.

Spliano is married with two children, but alsosupports his late brother’s three children, buyingthem items such as soap, clothing and groceriesat the Pick n Pay Family store in Plumstead. His parents are unemployed, so he feels theweight of responsibility firmly on his shoulders. He spends between R200 and R300 on grocerieseach week, and says the prize will help tide himover for the coming months.

With the start of the school year, money hasbeen tight in the Spliano household. “Things areexpensive at moment. The children went back toschool and needed shoes, books and, of course, school fees.”

Spliano plans to spend his points wisely – bit bybit – and not go on a large splurge.

Bronwen Rohland, the director of marketing andsustainability for Pick n Pay said: “As we get readyto celebrate the first birthday of the Smart Shopper

reward programme, it is wonderful to be able tooffer our smart shoppers the chance to win a millionpoints.”

To make sure that you are getting the full benefitsof your Smart Shopper card, remember to visit theSmart Shopper kiosk every time you shop at Pickn Pay.

Spliano ended off by thanking Pick n Pay. “Itmeans so much to me. I work three or four daysa week and I don’t have much money, so thankyou. God bless you.”

CHRISTINE HARRELL

DRIVING a car should provide a smooth ridethat does not feel uneven or shaky. Howev-

er, constant driving and potholes can seriouslythrow a car’s wheel alignment out of line. Thisshould prompt a driver to head over to a tyreshop for wheel rebalancing.

Tyres need to be rebalanced due to the weightof the wheel becoming distributed unevenly. Evensmall imbalances of only an ounce of weight can

cause a vehicle to vibrate at speeds of over120km/h.

It is a general rule that all four tires on a auto-mobile should be rebalanced every 20 000km.

Another sign to watch out for is uneven treadpatterns on the tyre which indicates that the tyresare misaligned.

This is often not the case with most drivers.Despite the fact the wheels may appear to be

balanced, only a wheel balancer machine candiscovereven the slightest discrepancies.

Additional problems arise when a car’s tyresare not balanced correctly.

In addition to tyre wear, a car’s suspensiongoes through extra stress due to the unbalancedtyres.

Steering components also suffer as does fuel

consumption.Tyre traction and steering control are also re-

duced when tyres need to be balanced.Ultimately, it is important to rebalance a car’s

tyres to prevent damage and ensure the safetyof those riding within the vehicle.

A standard wheel balancing will require that acertified mechanic removes the wheels and putsit on a balancer machine to spin.

After spinning, the machine will determine thelocations where the imbalances are located.

Wheel balancers are placed on the rims to dis-tribute the weight more evenly and put the wheelinto balance.

A final spin is done to make sure that the wheelis balanced with the wheel balancers in place. Af-ter this step, the wheels are placed back on the

vehicle, for a smoother, safer vehicle to drive. Un-balanced wheels are a danger on the road andfor anyone who is driving on them. Wobblingwheels can cause a loss of driver control that canlead to a more serious accident. Making thechoice to rebalance tyres often is a great decisionthat will impact the life of the car’s tyres and thevehicle that they are placed on.

It cannot be stressed enough that wheel balanc-ing plays a vital role in keeping a vehicle in goodshape. – AGSelectImports.com

THE annual Cape Town Bike Show waslaunched in December 2010 and has been agreat success.

The aim is to put together an outdoor exhibitof motorcycles along with displays from motor-

cycle manufacturers and suppliers. Thiswill also provide a great opportunity forthe biking community to come togetheronce again in aid of a charity as well asfor members of the public to get up closeand personal with these beautifullymade machines.

Few people realise how much fund-raising the biking community does in theWestern Cape.

Bikers represent every walk of life, from bankers and managing directors tolocal doctors and school principals, yetpopular media often misrepresentsthem.

Somewhat like the often misunder-stood squatter camp inhabitants whoare served by the deserving charity be-hind this event.

This year’s event – on Sunday 4 March – is be-ing planned as an annual fundraising vehicle forLiving Way – a part of Living Hope – which is stra-tegically positioned adjacent to MasiphumeleleTownship on Kommetjie Road and is also withinwalking distance of Ocean View, two of their pri-mary catchment areas. They work to provide op-portunities for people to earn their way out of pov-erty, including preparing people for the world ofwork and developing entrepreneurs to make theirdreams a reality. Living Way is working to enablethe under-resourced to meet the market’s employ-ment needs. There will also be stalls offering avariety of motorcycle related items. Alongsidebikes and related items, there will be food and bev-erage stalls and a jumping castle and play area

for the kids.Join them on Sunday 4 March at the new venue,

the Living Hope Campus (on Kommetjie Road).Gates will be open to the public between 10:00and 16:00. There is parking for motorcycles insidethe venue and for vehicles in the surrounding ar-ea, monitored by security for peace of mind. Entryis R35 per person, including a metal badge, whilechildren aged three to 12 pay R5. For more infor-mation visit www.livingway.co.za or to book a stallor exhibit contact Jo Huysamen 082 518 3932 [email protected].

Choirs sing their way to theChoirs sing their way to thetoptopTAURIQ HASSEN

THE 73rd annual Cape Malay Choir Boardcompetition is well underway, with the fi-

nal stages growing closer by the day.

With six competitions already a thing of thepast, the Top Eight and Grand Finale (Silver Fez)are set to take place at the Good Hope Centrein Cape Town next month.

Shafiek April, president of the board, ex-pressed sheer delight at the talent which is tak-ing the Cape by storm.

“The teams have pulled off some outstandingperformances thus far and you can see improve-ments in their pieces. They are working hard toentertain the crowd.”

In the sectional phase of the competition earli-er this year, Ottomans, Shoprite Jonge Stu-dente, Boarding Boys and Young Men walkedaway as the winners.

This allowed them to qualify for a spot in thecoveted Top Eight competition.

This past weekend, teams that were unableto perform in the sectional phase competed inspecially-organised competitions called the Pre-mier and President’s Cup.

In the Premier Cup on Saturday, Young Coro-nations ended at the top of the log with 30 points.

They beat other hopefuls by winning the Com-ic Song, Nederlands and Combined sections.

Parkdales were the runners-up with Classicsfinishing in third place.

In the President’s Cup on Sunday, Calypsowalked away as the winners, sitting pretty on 34points and a clean sweep of all the categories.Young Ideas finished second, with Rangerswrapping up the top three.

While April was quick to mention that the onstage performances were “beyond spectacular”,off-stage logistics proved to be quite a chal-lenge.

At the ticket box, surrounding stalls and Cokestands, large amounts of counterfeit money sur-faced, impacting on the event’s financial situa-tion.

“This is one of those situations that is a goodand bad thing, because we are happy that peo-ple are showing desperation to get into the com-petitions, but at the same time, we are losing outfinancially,” says April.

He says it is believed that a syndicate mighthave been operating at the event and the boardhas now put infrared lights at the ticket boxesand stalls.

Air-conditioning inside the venue has alsoproved to be a problem, with many of the specta-tors sweating buckets inside the Good HopeCentre.

Most of the spectators come from local old-age homes and several have passed out owingto the humidity in the facility.

The centre has been without adequate air-

conditioning for years.“We have discussed this issue with council

and we can gladly say there is movement on thismatter, with the councillor looking to install prop-er air-conditioning,” says April.

Regardless of the challenges, the event stillproduced some sterling performances, and Aprilbelieves there is more room for improvement onstage. “We find new teams looking to enter everyyear, so this proves that Malay choirs are get-ting stronger and they are focusing more on giv-ing the crowd a great show,” April added.

The Top Eight competition is set to takeplace on Saturday 17 March and the Grand Fi-nale (Silver Fez) on Saturday 31 March.

Lace up for annu-al 10 km Big WalkSUMMER JACOBS

IT’S THAT time of the year when Cape-tonians lace up for the annual 10km BigWalk.

Regarded as one of Cape Town’sbiggest family events, the walk will takeplace on Sunday 4 March outside CapeTown Stadium.

The Big Walk has approximately 20000 entrants annually, the largest ca-pacity manageable within the Sea Pointarea.

Starting at the stadium in GreenPoint, participants walk along BeachRoad and back. Participants are en-couraged to bring along family andfriends to give it a community feel.

“People of all ages can enter. We’ve

had a baby of just under a month en-tered into the walk and the mother at-tached the entry number to the pram,”said media and communication liaisonofficer Mahmood Sanglay.

Prizes up for grabs include an over-seas trip, a full college training course, laptop, TV, walking shoes and muchmore.

However, as the walk is family orien-tated, organisers try to prevent com-petitiveness.

Thus, a lucky draw is held in whichall entrants can participate.

The entry fee is R20.To enter online visit www.tope-

MAKING A DIFFERENCE: The Growsmart initiative was recently launched for thenew year, incorporating 168 schools competing for the prestigious title. The Grows-mart Literacy Competition will see over 500 grade 4’s and 5’s participate in a five-month long competition. The three children on the winning team will also each re-ceive R20 000 towards their future education. The launch was held at Spine RoadHigh school hall. This year the winning school will win R200 000, which will be usedtowards improving facilities. The launch was attended by Provincial Minister for Edu-cation, Donald Grant. Stormers losecaptain to inju-ryLIAM MOSES

THE Stormers will be forced to dip further intotheir youthful reserves over the next twomonths, after captain and incumbent open-side flank Schalk Burger was ruled out for upto six weeks on Saturday.

Burger suffered damage to his mediate liga-ment during the team’s 13 point victory over theHurricanes at Newlands, and his absence will robthe team of not only his leadership skills and ex-perience, but also his high work rate, aggressiverucking and excellent distribution skills.

The Stormers have lacked a premier opensideflank since the departure of Francois Louw toBath in the off season, but it was believed thatBurger would be able to excel in the positionwhere he began his first-class career.

Siya Kolisi, a versatile and athletic young looseforward, supplanted Burger during the match, and he seems likely to fill the position next weekwhen the Stormers take on the Sharks.

However, coach Alister Coetzee said he wouldconsider all of his options for the position.

“In the pre-season games we had Siya (Kolisi)coming on at six and he actually didn’t do a badjob,” said Coetzee.

“ But with the loose trio situation, we were play-ing our best loosies.

“We’ll be looking at our reserves. There’s Rue-ben Johannes, and Nizaam Carr and Don Ar-mandt.”

The inclusion of Kolisi in the starting line-upteam, and either Johannes, Carr or Armandt onthe substitutes bench will serve to further de-crease the average age and experience level of

the first team. The Stormers fielded four players aged 23 or

younger (Nick Koster, Eben Etzebeth, Steven Kit-shof and Gary van Aswegen) in their starting line-up, and the number grew to five when Kolisi tookthe place of his injured captain.

Coetzee was understandably happy with howthe youngsters handled the increased physicalityof Super Rugby.

“All youngsters, like I said previously, have thepotential to play at this level. And again today itshowed,” said Coetzee.

“Siya (Kolisi) is physically mature, Eben Etze-beth is physically mature, and Steven Kitshof, toplay at this level.

“Our pack was outstanding today, and theyhave been under a lot of flak over the past coupleof weeks and a lot of people had a lot to say.”

Although all five of the youngsters played withvarying degrees of success, and brought a nec-essary youthful vigor to the side, it could be ar-gued that Burger’s loss will damage the delicatebalance between youth and experience that setsthe champions apart from the also-rans. Whoev-er replaces the hard man of the Stormers loosetrio in his absence, be it Kolisi, Johannes, Carror Armandt, will be thrust into the inferno that isSuper Rugby, and either be forged into a steelycompetitor or melt into obscurity.

Spoils shared in CapederbyLIAM MOSES

AJAX were made to rue their missedchances in the Cape derby on Satur-day night when local rivals Santosfought back from a one goal deficitto draw the match at the Cape Townstadium.

Those who did not see the gamecould be forgiven for marking it downas another dreary stalemate. But in re-ality the match was a lively affair fromthe kick-off, and the result was not wor-thy of the entertaining game that tookplace.

Ajax took control of the encounterfrom the very first minute – monopolis-ing possession and camping in Santos’territory – and they took a deservedlead in the nineteenth minute afterGeorge Maluleka was fouled in the box.

Brent Carelse, who led the line forAjax on Saturday night, stepped up andconverted the spot kick easily, but theveteran attacker’s composure seemedto desert him in the rest of the matchand he was guilty of missing severalclear-cut opportunities.

Several other Ajax players alsofluffed goal scoring opportunities andthe match could have been killed off onseveral occasions in the first stanza ifthe Urban Warriors brought their shoot-ing boots along.

Ajax Coach Maarten Stekelenbergsaw the poor shooting as the only flawin an otherwise polished display by hisplayers.

“I’m quite happy with the perform-ance of the team, because Ajax didvery good. We created a lot. The onlything I think we can blame ourselves foris that we didn’t finish the clear opportu-nities that we created,” said MaartenStekelenberg.

“I think we could have finished thegame in the first half and played thegame home in the second half.”

In the first half Santos seemed pow-erless to stop the constant flow of Ajaxattacks, and they were guilty playingtoo directly and conceding possessionfar too easily.”

However, Duncan Crowie’s team re-turned from the half-time break a com-pletely different side and they leveledthe score less than 14 minutes later, af-

ter winning a free kick in a relatively in-nocuous area of Ajax’s half.

The ball was floated into the penaltyarea and Lanky striker Eleazar Rodg-ers rose highest to head past a helplessSander Westerveld, into the left cornerof the goal.

Neither team created any furtherchances in first half and the score lineremained deadlocked until the finalwhistle.

Apart from Ajax’s poor finishing, theother major talking point in the matchwas the decidedly schizophrenic per-formance of Santos.

Santos Coach Duncan Crowieblamed the poor first half performanceon nervousness from his players.

“When we came out in the secondhalf and we started playing the ballaround I think we gained territorial ad-vantage and we always put the Ajaxgoal under threat and that is probablywhy we scored,” said Crowie.

“The disappointment of the first halfI think I can put that down to the playersbeing too tense. In the second half theyrelaxed a little bit more and I think thatis where we want to start our next

game.”Crowie added that a change of tac-

tics in the second half also helped hisside to gain a foothold in the game. Ajaxwill face Amazulu in Kwa-Zulu Natal intheir next game on Saturday 11 Marchin the Nedbank Cup, while Santos willface the University of Pretoria on

Wednesday 7 March at Athlone Stadi-um in the same competition.

GOAL BOUND: Santos striker Eleazar Rodgers rises high to meet the ball.Rodgers scored his side’s only goal in their match against local rivals Ajaxon Saturday night.
