Elderly patients queuing from as early as 05:00 have become a common sight outside the Dr Abdurahman Day Hospital. Brittle boned and frail from old age, they brave the cold and brace themselves for a long wait. Resident Lorenzo Louw, of Kewtown, says the facility opens long after the patients have arrived. He explains that gates open at 07:00 and claims there is usually a single staff member at reception. “It causes delays in prioritising reasons for visits,” Louw says. “Patients arrive early be- cause they know collecting tablets and seeing the doctor is a long process in itself.” He says patients are vulnerable to extreme winter conditions and eventually targeted by robbers while waiting for the gates to open. He drives his grandmother, who is 83, to the hospital each month and prefers for her to wait in the car until the hospital opens. “My grandmother is one of the few who can sit in a warm car while waiting, but what about the unfortunate ones who have to stand in the queue?” he asks. A Gleemore resident, who was parked out- side the facility waiting patiently for his wife, says there’s not much one can do as it is “just how the system works”. “It’s first come, first served. That’s the cul- ture of coming to this hospital,” he says. There are, however, many who do not share his sentiment. Standing in a long queue on Friday morning people said they are receiv- ing “inhumane treatment”. Provincial health department spokesper- son Sithembiso Magubane says: “A shelter is currently being erected for clients waiting at the facility.” Regarding complaints, Magubane says there are clear channels for patients to lodge a formal grievance. He says complainants need to be reminded that their “first entry point should be the fa- cility manager”. Magubane also notes that triaging (assign- ing degrees of urgency) will be one of the measures to deal with clients’ waiting times. The facility will use a colour-coded guide. Red is for clients with serious trauma and/ or medical emergencies. These will be attend- ed to immediately. Orange indicates less seri- ous cases and could wait for maximum of 10 minutes. Social seniors head WestDear reader,

Wearewell into the firstweekofRamadan,a holy month during which Muslimsthroughout the world go without food, drinkand physical intimacies from sunrise to sun-set.

The month is spent performing extraprayers (Taraweeh), remaining spirituallycontemplative and repentant, and showingempathy and charity towards those less priv-ileged.

Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islamand is known for its spiritual and health ben-efits.

Those who have fasted for many years willknow how testing a journey it can be. Forego-ing food and drink is the easierpart.

Remaining steadfast in yourspiritual resolve and resistingprovocation is the hard part.

It is especially trying when,in addition to the usual de-mands of your professionaland personal life, you arefaced with extra challenges.

The beauty of being in astate of fasting though is thatyour body and mind automati-cally transcends base urgesand, even if you wanted to lashout in anger at someone whohas annoyed you, you invaria-bly find yourself unable to.

Usually by the end of Ramadan, Muslimsfeel sad for a host of reasons.

Some regret not optimising the spiritualgrowth opportunity, others feel a sense ofloss of the unity experienced, and many un-dertake to uphold the practices of kindnessand sharing. My challenge as I progressthrough this month, will be to act selflesslyand contain my emotions as I brace myselffor one of the toughest challenges of my life;that of letting the little boy who has knownme as his mother for five of his six yearslearn that he has another mother.

Two weeks ago, my foster son’s life wasturned upside down when he met his birthmother, whom he hadn’t seen in four years.

She took him one side and quietly told him

that she was his real mother and wanted totake him home with her.

He protested by drawing a picture of me,complete with long hair – as opposed to hershort hair – and then showing her who hismother is.

To her telling him that the name he isknown by was not his name, he promptlywrote down the five letters of his name. Al-though I was angry at the bad timing, I wasvery proud of my son for standing his groundand asserting his identity.

Iwasalsoproudofhis confidence; andabil-ity to spell and draw.

Sadly, he was traumatised after this meet-ing, constantly expressing his fear at beingtaken away from his home and parents.

Through mutual agreement,a series of regular visits aimedat reuniting my son with his bi-ological family has been sched-uled, with the first one meantto have taken place today.

I was relieved when the so-cial worker informed me yes-terday that the visit had beencancelled.

But I know that future inter-actions are inevitable and thatI cannot control the processesthat may stem from them.

What I can do is protect myson from hurt, remind all par-ties concerned that decisions

should be made in his, not the adults’ bestinterests and continue to provide a safe, lov-ing home for him.

In a perfect world, I would have protectedmy son from some of his life truths, but asthe older and responsible one, I know thatlife seldom goes according to plan.

As I look forward to Ramadan and thepeace and strength it will bring me, I am alsoaware that it will be a crucial time for meto choose the correct responses to influencea positive outcome for the child entrusted tome.

’Til next time, go well!ConnectED is a weekly column by Peo-

SUMMER JACOBS

A TUG of war is raging between home-owners and “corporate monsters” aboutthe lawful ownership of RDP houses.

People living in RDP homes in Heideveldsay the Cape Town Community HousingCompany (CTCHC), whom they bought theirhomes from, are “screwing them over” withlies, illegal evictions and harassment.

These homeowners accuse the company ofpromising them decent homes but insteadthey were given unplastered houses withcracked walls.

Zaza Louw, the chairperson of the Luy-oloville Community Forum says the CTCHCstarted their building project in 2000 and ad-vertised that the disabled, unemployed andpensioners would all qualify for houses.

“People had to save a certain amount everymonth for up to six months before they couldmove into a home,” says Louw.

“This amount was dependant on thenumber of bedrooms they chose. So the priceranged from R50 for a one bedroom house toR250 for a two-bedroomed house.”

She says when people had to sign the 23-page contract for their houses they were notallowed to read it at all.

“People were refused to read through theircontracts. Those who insisted were told to getout of the line because they did not reallywant a house. Everyone was so desperate tohave a roof over their heads that they justsigned.”

When people started moving into thesehouses, Louw says some of the structureswere missing doors and windows. She alsosays the quality of work and building materi-al was so poor that “a lot of people had grass

growing through the foundation”.Vuyokazi Mbutye and her two children

moved into an RDP house in 2000. Mbutyesays she paid R150 for a year and the balancewas covered by a housing subsidy. AlthoughMbutye says she doesn’t owe the company acent, she has been evicted four times and ar-rested thrice. “When I moved in I was soproud to have my own house. Now I feel likeI’m living a nightmare,” says Mbutye.

Feeling “victimised” by the company, shesays she has tried to contact the people incharge.

“I went to their offices when it was still in

Mitchell’s Plain but they turned me away andsaid they had no clue what I was talkingabout. I also went to the department of hous-ing in town but they couldn’t help me either.

“I’ve spent a night in jail like a criminal, and each time they move my belongings theydamage it.”

Mbutye’s children are also taking strain

and she says her son, who studies at a tech-nikon, is especially stressed. “My childrenare struggling to concentrate on their stud-ies. They are constantly fretting over wheth-er they’ll have a roof over their heads by theend of the day.”

Forced to hire a lawyer to get legal action, she says the fees are eating into her income.

“ But legal help is needed to fight these cor-porate monsters,” she affirms.

Ernest Mgugusha, who lives in a neigh-bouring street says that like Mbutye, he is al-so paid up and yet he has received an evictionnotice. “The court granted the company aneviction notice but my lawyer appealed it.The case has now been referred to the highcourt,” he says.

Mgugusha stresses that the governmentonly grants an individual a housing subsidyonce.

“These houses have been paid for by oursubsidies so we cannot be forced out. If weare, wewill neverqualify for another subsidyagain which means we will never have ahome to call our own.”

Office manager for the CTCHC, Mary-AnnArendorf, says Mbutye’s case is “currentlysubject to criminal as well as civil action andis with the courts”.

Not divulging anything else, Arendorf on-ly adds that the company is “awaiting the out-come of the trespassing case from the courts”.

Arendorf failed to respond to People’s Post’semail request about other residents’ con-cerns at the time of going to press.

Cops on civvy duty – a joke or not?Cops on civvy duty – a joke or not?A DECISION by the national police au-thorities to cancel private contracts –including guards at gates and cleaningservices – has been met with ridicule.

The official opposition, the DA, has re-portedly said nobody will take seriously apolice officer with a “mop in hand”.

DA spokesperson Dianne Kohler Bar-nard said: “Thismeanswehave fewer copson the streets and more in police officestaking responsibility for non-core duties.”

People’s Post reporters Teresa Fischer,Laila Majiet and Summer Jacobs polledreaders for their views.

SCEPTICAL: Peter Samuel, aformer firefighter, says back inthe day theyused to have toclean their ownfire engines;now they havecleaners do it.He says the police should lookafter themselves, but hedoesn’t think itwill happen. “If itdoes, what willthey do with themoney theysave?”

AGAINST: Veronique Lemeneysays: “I didn’teven know theyhad securityguards at policestations. By having security theyare creating jobsfor people andthere will bemore police outin the field. Whatwill happen nowif one phonesthem and theycan’t come outbecause they arebusy guardingthe station?”

BE RESOURCEFUL: MyrtleChristian sayspolice stationsshould use theservices athand. “I knowsome policestations withholding cellsuse the peoplein the holdingcells to helpclean aroundthe station. This way theycan do something constructive instead ofdoing nothingall day.”

SAFETYFIRST: RitaSheldon believes protecting people is the firstand foremostduty of the police. “Theyshould not beasked to domenialtasks. Theyhave beentrained andare paid toprovide theservice of protection, notto keepthings tidy.”

GOODIDEA: CliveBooysen(49) says itmay be agood ideato get police to do civilian work. However,he says: “Itshouldn’tinterferewith theirpolicingwork. Police officersalreadyhave a loton theirplate.”

UNFAIR: AshrafKhan (32)thinks policehave a bigenough tasksweeping thestreets of crime.“We cannot becalling on policeand be toldthey’re too busyguarding policestations or mopping to attend toour crime concerns. Childrenare not going towant to becomepolice officersanymore”.

DOUBTFUL:Deliwe Shaba(30) says it isa bad idea.“Police haveenough work.As it stands, there is justabout enoughpolice officers to fightcrime. Thesepolice officers cannot beexpected toclean andguard policestationswhen theyshould be protecting us.”

ATHLONE has spoken, and most havegiven their support to one of the area’sbusiest roads being named after an anti-apartheid activist.

Should Mayor Patricia De Lille and CapeTown councillors give the go ahead, Van-guard Drive will become Dullah Omar Drive.

His wife, Farieda Omar, will also be con-sulted for her stamp of approval.

Known as one of the most respected free-dom fighters, Omar played a key role in

transforming the justice system. The UCTlaw graduate also served as a spokespersonfor Nelson Mandela shortly before his re-lease from prison.

The Athlone Civic Centre is also ear-marked to be renamed the Dulcie SeptemberCentre.

Born in Gleemor, the political activist wasa qualified teacher. She was assassinated inParis while reportedly investigating the traf-ficking of weapons between France andSouth Africa.

Last week the City of Cape Town finaliseda series of proposed new street names for DeLille’s consideration.

In an extensive public participation proc-ess earlier this year, residents were asked to

comment on the proposed renaming of 24streets, two civic centres and a footbridge.

The Naming Committee’s chairperson andMayoral Committee member for Transport,Roads and Stormwater, Brett Herron says al-most 19 000 comments were received and inmany instances council has agreed to leavecertain names unchanged.

“We are determined that the renamingprocess is one that leads to an inclusive CapeTown, and one that it is free of the divisionsthat have regrettably characterised similarprocesses in other metros in South Africa,”he says.

Once De Lille has studied the proposal, thesuggested changes will be submitted to coun-cil for approval.

THE public will be given a voice in the clo-sure of Peak View Secondary.

Staff at the Bridgetown school say their fu-ture looks bleak despite academic progressbeing made by students.

Principal Oswald de Villiers says the pub-lic hearing, planned by the provincial educa-tion department for 18 August, is just a for-mality.

“I don’t have any faith in the public hearingso I am mobilising learners, teachers and par-ents. The provincial education departmentofficials have already made up their minds –a public hearing is just their way of followingprocedure.”

The school will hold a placard demonstra-tion outside the school tomorrow (Wednes-day).

“We will have a placard demonstration forthe next three days. Next Monday we willmove to Klipfontein Road, where there isgreater visibility, in a bid to mobilise thegreater community in helping to keep theschool open.”

The school has improved their results sig-nificantly following the implementation ofisiXhosa Home Language. The schools ma-triculants achieved a 74,4% pass rate for theirJune exams.

Last year, the school had very poor results;24 of 39 matric pupils failed English HomeLanguage as their mother tongue is isiXhosa.Since the implementation of isiXhosa HomeLanguage, there has been a 100% pass rate inthat subject at the end of the first term.

Bronagh Casey, the spokesperson for theprovincial education minister Donald Grant, says the department is currently unable tocomment on an improvement in academic re-

sults. “The Minister will consider anyrepresentationsmade tohimwhichre-flect [an academic improvementwhen] making his final decision. Hecannot comment on this now as itcould compromise the process,” shesays.

On theheels of the imminent closureof 27 schools in the province, peoplehave been called on to participate inthe school closure process.

“Closing the school does not take thepupils’ well-being into consideration.Even the teachers have been demoral-ised by the imminent closure,” De Vil-liers says.

The department’s letter, sent earlier thismonth, states it is in the next process of the“official closure” as opposed to the “intent toclose the school” which it had previously stat-ed.

Casey counters: “The education depart-ment is aware of the confusion over the sub-ject line of the letter issued to schools. Wehave contacted each of the schools to ensurethat they are aware of the process involvedand that they must refer to the contents of theletter. ”

Despite representations previously beingmade by school governing bodies, Grant hasdecided to proceed with the public hearings.

“This decision merely officially marks the

beginning of the broader participation proc-ess. It does not indicate any final decision onhis behalf,” Casey says.

She adds the aim of the proposed school clo-sure “is to improve opportunities for the chil-dren concerned at the affected schools. Thedepartment would like to place them atschools that are better equipped to providequality education.”

A final decision on the school closures isexpected to be made in September or Octoberafter Grant “has reviewed all the representa-tions and submissions by the school govern-ing bodies, the department and the publicthrough the public participation process”,she says.

SUMMER JACOBS

A WARD councillor and a mercyministry have united to promotea common cause – tending to theneeds of vulnerable children.

The Arise Family Centre, on thecorner of Groenberg and PosternRoads in Heideveld, caters to chil-dren affected by various socialproblems.

Unique to Cape Town, the centrepromotes and supports foster careand the adoption of children.

It also runs programmes such askids clubs, homework clubs, educa-tional support and therapeuticservices.

As a Christian-based organisa-tion, director Steven Nicholsonsays Arise has always advocated astrong family for children.

“God created children for fami-lies,” he says.

Arise’s programmes also includeparenting workshops.

Anthony Moses, ward councillorof ward 44 and the deputy chairper-son for Social and Early Child De-velopment in theCity ofCapeTown, wants to recognise as well as pro-mote facilities such as the AriseFamily Centre.

Moses says: “I started with theprinciple of creating a caring envi-ronment in our ward and recognis-ing the goodwill of our organisa-

tions.”He says the idea of creating a car-

ing environment means to reachout to the community and enhance

the human dignity that promotesevery citizen within the ward.

“Caring should not just happenfrom a formal perspective, but also

in an informal manner,” he says. One school which Arise works

with closely is Dagbreek PrimarySchool, which is adjacent to the cen-tre.

The facility’s social workers andpsychologists spend time at theschool doing group work and be-haviour management with the chil-dren, as well as consulting withteachers.

Nicholson says over the years, teachers have seen a big change inthe children’s behaviour and out-look.

Moses says: “There are many so-cial challenges, such as singleparenting and the plight of the or-phans, which needs to be addressedwithin the family environment.

“Services should be extended toeverybody within the communitywho face these challenges.”

Nicholson believes this is achiev-able if the communityworks togeth-er.

“People should partner up –whether it’swithus orwithanotherorganisation – to find ways to cre-ate a positive family environmentfor all children,” he says.

“People need to use their time tomake a positive transformation intheir community.”

SUMMER JACOBS

CORRIDORS leading betweencourts have been identified aseasy getaway routes for crooks.

This has led to a call from Kana-bas Court residents for the“gangetjies” to be closed to keep badelements out.

On a visit to the Kewtown courtlast week, ward councillor SuzetteLittle was asked to seal up the sidesof the court to prevent “unwantedcharacters” from entering.

Little has agreed to seal up theplace by reinstating walls and re-placing broken slabs.

She says these plans will be im-plemented at neighbouring courtsas well.

TenantMogamatDavids says sus-picious-looking people run throughthe court “after they get up to mis-chief”. “We are afraid to come outof our flats because there are al-

ways figures lurking about at allhours in the yard,” he says.

One of the unwanted entries is aman-made path which leadsthrough Athlone North Primary’sproperty.

It also gives neighbouring courtseasy access to Kanabas Court.

The other entry is a throughwayleading to a public open space.

A resident, who asks not to benamed, says traffic in the alleywaysincreases over weekends.

“The gangsters and ou rokerswait until the lights in the flats areoff, then they sit on the stairs andsmoke their dagga and tik,” shesays.

“I’ve been living here for 40 yearsand I’m sick of these bad elements.”

After listening to the accounts ofpast incidents, Little agrees that“tightening things up” is impor-tant.

Pointing to the fence, she says shehas already started the process of

safe-guarding the premises. However, Little says it is up to resi-

dents to take care of the property as an-other court’s gate is already broken af-ter being installed only two monthsago.

She says gangsterism and drugsforms part of a bigger problem.

“You can’t keep putting a band aidon a festering wound,” she says.“Gangsterism and drugs are symp-toms of a greater problem. They arenot the problem itself.”

“This court is a family in trouble andit is up to us to fix it. The first step weare going to take to mend it is to havean operation clean-up.”

Furthermore, Little has requestedthat a skip be brought to the court toallow people to properly dispose of alltheir household waste.

She stresses that it is important torid the area of empty tik packets anddagga seeds because soon the recentlylaunched Social Housing Unit willstart patrolling.

“I can’t stop anyone searchingyour homes. If they find any tracesof drug use on your property, itgoes into your file.” The Unit willbe responsible for enforcing by-laws surrounding illegal occupan-cy, tenant contraventions, leaseagreements and noise nuisances.

Residents concluded the meet-ing by agreeing to create a neigh-bourhood watch.

“By keeping a visitors’ log wewill be able to control movementin our court,” Davids says.

Little says she is adamant forthe court to become a healthy en-vironment.

“We are going to enter normalsociety and I’m asking the com-munity to work with me. Comehell or high water, ’n nuwe Kana-bas gaan ons bou.”

Safety wrapTHE Summer Olympics kick off in London onFriday.

One of the major concerns levelled at theSA 2010 World Cup Soccer – crime – is comingback to haunt London.

Among the most barbed voices in the worldmedia, the Brits simply could not reign intheir negativity around a safe world event inthis former colony.

History has proven their fears unfounded. Now the same questions are being asked of

the London Olympics. How safe will visitorsand athletes be? In particular, Israeli athleteswho mark the 40th anniversary of the Gamesin Munich, Germany, when terrorists killed11 Israeli athletes and coaches.

Chairman of the London 2012 Olympics, Se-bastian Coe, has promised a “safe and secure”event.

Coe fielded media enquiries after the fail-ure of private security company G4S to pro-vide adequate security staff. This has led to3 500 more British troops being called in,making it about 17 000 troops on duty to keepCoe true to his word.

Safety of another matter has also been anissue. Sex workers in Newham, the east Lon-don area which houses the stadium, havebeen bearing the brunt of a police blitz.

The expected influx of two million visitorsfor the Olympics will, it is reportedly predict-ed, inject £13bn into the UK economy overthe next four years. Perhaps safe sex is theone aspect of personal safety visitors to Lon-don may not have to worry about.

A crime associated directly with the SASoccer World Cup – the armed robbery ofthree foreign reporters covering the Portu-guese soccer team at a four-star high-securitylodge near Johannesburg – has at the timebeen solved promptly.

Two Zimbabweans and a Nigerian were ar-rested, charged, tried, convicted and sen-tenced in one of 54 special courts set up.

The world waits to see if the same efficiencycan be expected of London.

THE ugly face of the death penaltyshocked many of us when a young womanwas publicly executed in Afghanistan. Itnever has a pretty face and can never be“humane”.

I was a young boy of 12 when I first en-countered the death penalty.

A young man killed his lover and hermother in Cradock, my birthplace. He at-tempted suicide, but was later executed. That day I decided to devote my life to thefight against this vile form of punish-ment.

Through the years I’ve written numer-ous letters to newspapers nationally tomake people think how despicably it isused in different countries. More thanhalf the countries of the world have al-ready abolished it. Not one desires to re-introduce this Trojan horse.

The bullying tactics of the super powersto continue using it for their own dubiousends is a big stumbling block. China atone stage had 67 capital offences, nowa-days about 56. In the USA and several oth-ers, like Saudi Arabia, even youngsters

and the mentally challenged can be exe-cuted.

The death penalty is very emotionaland sensitive and causes untold anxietyto both parties, the victim, the perpetra-tor and their families.

No scientific or empirical evidence thatthe death penalty has deterrent value hasemerged and never will. Politiciansshould introduce a law making this claima criminal offence.

Many countries have come to SA seek-ing to learn how it was ever possible toextricate ourselves from our disastrouspast.

Others will unfortunately never be suc-cessful in unshackling themselves fromtheirs without paying a monstrous pricein the loss of human life, relationshipsand infrastructure.

The death penalty is a violent act andwill always lead to more violence. Thereis nothing good about it.

Anyone who supports the death penaltyis himself a potential murderer.KOERT U MEYER

New Honda CRV headed for SANew Honda CRV headed for SASINCE its launch in 1995, more than five-million Honda CR-V units have been soldglobally and the forthcoming generationsports a new design as it hopes to build onits predecessors’ success.

South African fans of the Japanese SUVwill have to wait until October or Novemberto get behind the wheel.

The initial range gives a choice betweentwo-litre and 2.2 diesel engines. Power re-mains the same for the i-DTEC diesel engine,at 110kW/350Nm though CO2 emissions forthe manual version have been reduced from171g/km to 153g/km.

The i-VTECpetrol seesmarginal powerandtorque increases to deliver 115kW and192Nm, while emissions have fallen from192g/km to 174g/km.

In front-wheel guise, the 2.0 petrol has aCO2 rating of 170g/km. The rest of rangesports all-wheel drive with hill assist and de-scent control.

Compared to the previous generationCR-V, the new model takes on a more asser-tive stance with a bold front design. Thebumper is joined by a horizontal grille anddeep-set headlights. The model’s signaturevertical tail-lights, now with LEDs, remainbut feature a three-dimensional style.

The headlights feature LED daytime run-ning lights.

Exterior designer Manabu Konaka says:“The CR-V has always been a car for everyoccasion. It can be both casual and formal, but theappearancemust always convey solid-ity and reliability.”

The length and height of the SUV has beenreduced by 5mm and 30mm respectively com-pared with the current model, without reduc-ing interior space.

With the rear seats folded flat, the boot ca-pacity of the CR-V has grown by 148 litres to1648 litres and with the seats folded up, bootcapacity is rated at 589 litres.

The load length has been increased by140mm to 1570mm, while the height of theload lip has been reduced by 25mm makingit easier to load heavy or awkward items.

Keyless entry and a power tailgate havebeen added to enhance its practicality.

The centre console sports a five-inch dis-play which controls audio, telephone andnavigation systems (where fitted).

More space has been created between theseats for two cup holders, a storage compart-

ment, armrest and airvents for the rear seats.Honda has added a host of technology as

standard for the new CR-V such as its ECONmode and Eco-assist systems.

When the ECON button is selected thethrottle responseandair-conditioningareau-tomatically adjusted to minimise fuel con-sumption.

The Eco-assist system uses the vehicle’sdashboard display to advise drivers on howtheir driving style is affecting fuel economy,

by changing the colour of the dial edges fromwhite to green when driving more efficiently.

The new CR-V is also the latest vehicle toemploy the automaker’s Advanced DriverAssist System (ADAS)

ADAS incorporates Honda’s Lane KeepingAssist System (LKAS), Adaptive Cruise Con-trol (ACC) and Collision Mitigation BrakingSystem (CMBS), which warns of an impend-ing collision and even applies the brakes tominimise an impact. – Wheels24

A concerted drive to save the worldA concerted drive to save the worldHAYLEY PHILANDER

SOUTH AFRICA is no stranger to hybridtechnology.

The Prius started it all, back in 2005 andLexus took up the hybrid technology batonwith its “performance hybrids” that todayforms an integral part of its line-up.

In 2012 these sister brands account for mostsales among SA’s 13 hybrid models.

Despite South Africans’ initial reluctanceto accept alternative fuels – and their govern-ment’s continued resistance to incentivisethe purchases of hybrid-powered vehicles –Toyota reports that acceptance of the technol-ogy is better, although still below the globalaverage.

It’s with this idea in mind that Toyota hasexpanded its recently introduced Yarisrange.

Its local hybrid range, which already in-cludes the latest Prius and the Auris deriva-tive, has been bolstered by the addition of theYaris HSD.

Toyota’s Hybrid Drive System is now in itsfourth generation and more than four-mil-lion of its hybrids have been sold worldwide.

This the most efficient Yaris yet – Toyotaclaims 3.8 litres/100km and 88g/km of CO2emissions – is also the flagship of the hatch-back fleet; there will be no traditional “hothatch” variant, corporate communicationsboss Leo Kok said, and product planning vice-presidentGlennCromptonadmitted the auto-maker was optimistic in its approach.

“It’s a new way of looking at performance,”he said.

On the performance front, however, theHSD has a combination of a 55kW/111Nm 1.5-

litre petrol engine, supplemented by a45kW/169Nm nickel-hydride battery andelectric drive based on that in the Prius.

The total system output is 74kW. The twooperate singly or together and the system ismated to a constantly variable transmission.

The downsized hybrid system combinesthe petrol engine with a lighter, more com-pact electric motor, transaxle, inverter andbattery pack – the total system weight is

201kg.But more than being just a more efficient

version of the new Yaris, the HSD looks thepart too with its slim upper grille, light clus-ters and distinctive blue hybrid badge. Aero-dynamic enhancements, among them an un-derbody cover and slipstream deflectors, con-tribute to the HSD’s drag coefficient of Cd0.286.

The cabin has a stand-out blue-grey dash,

hybrid blue instrumentation and a Prius-like computer touchscreen displaying –among other data – real-time details on howthe hybrid system is faring.

Toyota SA plotted an “economy run” aspart of the launch route in which driverswho recorded the best (and worst) fuel con-sumption along the route were rewarded fortheir efforts. The winning team recorded 3.29litres/100km over the 130km route.

The Yaris HSD’s cabin is refined; not eventhe characteristic hum of the transmissionmaking its way into the cabin.

Somehow the blue accents and the bolddashboard add a splash of interest to the oth-erwise dark place.

There are two specification levels – themid-spec XS (R223 800) and the XR (R245 900).Diode daylight running lights, auto aircon,Eco Indicator, anti-lock brakes and electron-ic brake pressure distribution, stability con-trol and front and side air bags are standardon the XS; the XR adds more air bags (seventotal), push-button start, cloth upholstery, front fog lights, a rear spoiler and cruise con-trol.

Kerry Roodt, Toyota SA’s general managerof marketing communications, said: “TheYaris HSD is a true B-segment car designedto attract new, young and urban customers. It’s a hybrid for the youth market, a first stepinto the technology.”

The Yaris HSD makes a very convincing“starter hybrid” statement.

It feels a lot more like a regular car thana mere expensive gimmick, a millstone thePrius has only recently starting to shake off,and it’s so user-friendly it can even providefuel savings for the driver seemingly uncon-cerned by such trivialities.

Opel appoints newOpel appoints newinterim chiefinterim chief

THE SUPERVISORY board ofGeneral Motors’ Opel brandhas named Thomas Sedran ashead of Opel in the latest re-structuring move for the com-pany.

Sedran’s new title as actingdeputy chairman of the Opelmanagement board follows theannouncement that GM vice-chairman Steve Girsky wouldhead the Europe division on aninterim basis, following Karl-Friedrich Stracke steppingdown after 16 months on the job.

Stracke will, however, stilltake on special assignments andreport to GM chairman and CEODan Akerson.

GM has lost $14-billion (aboutR114-billion) in Europe duringthe past 12 years.

Akerson told shareholdersEurope was the automaker’sbiggest challenge.

Girsky said they would con-tinue to implement the businessplan and work to improve it.

“We will further reduce bu-reaucracy and continue to chal-lenge the corporate culture.”

Sedran, a long-time consult-ant, will continue his manage-ment board role in charge of op-erations, business developmentand corporate strategies, whichhe has held since April.

Beltbag gets green lightMERCEDES-BENZ’S inflatable seatbeltstrap, first seen on the ESF 2009 experi-mental safety vehicle concept, will go intoproduction, the automaker announced.

The inflatable seatbelt strap, called Belt-bag, will be made available in a “luxury-class model”, Mercedes-Benz said in astatement.

The strap is designed to reduce the riskof injury to passengers in the rear in ahead-on collision by reducing the strainplaced on the ribcage.

Once the vehicle’s crash sensors detectan impact, the airbag control unit triggersthe airbag deployment and the multilay-ered strap inflates to nearly three timesthe normal width to better distribute theforces acting on the passenger.

It is used in exactly the same way as aconventional seatbelt.

It is not planned to introduce the Beltbagfor front occupants, as airbags are alreadyincluded in the front, the automaker add-ed. – Wheels24

TAURIQ HASSEN

THE long-awaited battle between AjaxCape Town and Manchester United endedin a 1-1 draw at Cape Town Stadium.

The match, which had been eagerly antici-pated by both teams fans since its announce-ment, was played in wet and rainy condi-tions. This, however, did not stop fans fromdonning their team’s colours to the match towatch the somewhat disappointing match.

Ajax drew first blood when substitute, Al-cardoVanGraan, chipped ina cross, catchingManchester United’s solid defence off-guard.

The 19 time English league championswaited until the 93rd minute of stoppage timeto spoil the Urban Warrior’s party, when an-other substitute, Bebe, skilfully slotted in theball into the back of the net from close range.

Ajax proved their worth against a Man-chester United team missing big names suchas Wayne Rooney, Nani and Nemanja Vidic.

Khama Billiat was one of the stand out per-formers for Ajax, giving United’s young leftback, Tyler Blackett, a tough day at the office.

The Zimbabwean winger, who was namedman of the match, had the Cape Town outfit’sfirst real chance, striking the ball just wideof the right hand post. Minutes later the wing-er tore United’s midfield, which featured ex-perience campaigners in Micheal Carrickand veteran Paul Scholes, to shreds beforelosing his footing and the opportunity waslost.

Chances were few for United, with Javier“Chicharito” Hernandez getting on the end offew chances missed in front of goal. WingerAntonio Valencia was left frustrated, as Ajaxstubborn defence stood tall. A close range

header by the Mexican striker got the crowdto their feet, but anacrobatic save fromDutchkeeper Sander Westerveld, denied the gamesopener.

In the second half, United came out firing, but still lacked the killer instinct in front ofgoal. The closest chance came from the headof new signing, Shinji Kagawa, when a pinpoint accurate cross from Bebe was headedinches wide from the post.

Ajax hitman, Terror Fanteni, stung thehands of United keeper, Ben Amos, when hiseffort was dug out in the 75th minute.

Ajax coach Maarten Stekelenburg was de-lighted at the performance displayed by theUrban Warriors, saying: “The players wereall pumped up for this game and playing infront of a full stadium motivated our playerseven further.”

Defensively, Stekelenburg highlighted theefforts of Nazeer Allie and the towering fig-ure of Matthew Booth, acknowledging thatthe Cape side had conceded too many goalslast season.

“It’s still in our pre-season for us that’s whywe made a number of substitutions to ensurethat we keep our players fresh, but we willcontinue to work hard on the training fieldso that at the start of our season, we can con-tinue where we left off,” says the proud Steke-lenburg.

Manchester United Manager, Sir Alex Fer-guson, was impressed with Ajax’s perform-ance when he told MUTV: “They caused usa few problems and we decided to makechanges and bring on the younger players, but it was a very competitive game.”

He was particularly impressed with theperformance of his two new signings, Ka-gawa and Nick Powell.

Still no change at the topLIAM MOSES

THE log leaders in the Mr Price HighSchools League resumed their dominanceof the competition this weekend after re-turning from a month long break.

Oval North and Mondale went into thebreak deadlocked on 16 points each andin first and second place respectively, with Oval North ahead only on goal differ-ence.

This weekend both teams again showedwhy they have occupied the first two plac-es for several weeks, both recording com-fortable victories.

Oval North beat Glendale 2-0, whileMondale won 3-0 in their game against Ce-dar High. But Mondale’s extra goal hasdone little to narrow the six-goal deficitby which they trail.

Cloetesville, who lead the table earlierin the competition, kept hold of third posi-tion with a 3-1 victory over Tafelsig, send-ing their opponents tumbling from ninthto 11th.

The Stellenbosch side, who have 16points to their name, moved up into thirdfrom sixth during the last round of match-es in June.

Lenteguer were fortunate to retain thefourth position on the table after losing to0-2 to Aloe High. The result, which is easi-ly the most shocking of the weekend, sawAloe move up from 10th to seventh place.

Portlands High also suffered a surpris-ing defeat in their fixture against BeaconHill. The 3-0 victory saw Beacon Hillclimb from 11th to ninth, while Portlands

retained fifth place.Westridge occupy sixth place, ahead of

Aloe and Glendale in seventh and eighthrespectively. All three teams have earned10 points in the tournament and are sepa-rated by goal difference only.

Heideveld went into this round of fix-tures in last place on the table, havingearned only two points. However, theyhave moved up two places to 14th thanksto a 3-1 victory over Belgravia. The defeatsaw Belgravia drop down to tenth, belowBeacon Hill, from eighth place.

Tafelsig and Rocklands had differingfortunes this weekend, but both teamshave clung to their respective 11th and12th spots. Rocklands’ 3-0 victory overWestridge did not affect their log position.

Spine Road High claimed a 2-0 victoryover fellow stragglers Princeton thisweekend, but the results did little to affectpositions at the bottom of the table.

The last four teams on the league tableare Spine Road (7), Heideveld (5), Prince-ton (3) and Cedar (2).

The league resumes next weekend, butthe games will not be played at the at theRocklands Sports Complex. The venuewas not confirmed at the time of going toprint.
