Eddington, Elmo Dr. Born March 19, 1895 in Morgan Graduated from Latter­Day Saint High School in Salt Lake Graduated from the University of Utah with a Bachelors of Science Served in the Medical Corps of the Navy during World War I. Graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School in 1924 Began his Doctor career in Chicago Illinois.

In 1931 he purchased the Lehi Hospital and the practice of Dr. F. W. Worlton in Lehi.

Has served several times as member of the House of Delegates; Utah State Medical Society and also the American Medical Association throughout his entire practice.

Past President of the Lehi Lions Club Past President of the Lehi Riding Club Director of the State Bank of Lehi Vice­President of Eddington Canning Company. Charter Trustee Member of the John Hutchings Museum 1956 Turned over the Lehi Hospital to the City so they could obtain Federal Funds

for the Hospital. Led the successful campaign for Sewer in Lehi with Mayor Frank Sharp.

Eddington, Rhea Felt Attended the Manti Elementary, Manti and Moroni High schools, Agricultural

College of Logan and the University of Utah. She is past President of the Auxiliary to the Utah County Medical Society. She has served as secretary to the Utah State Medical Auxiliary. On September 15, 1922, she married Elmo Eddington Mother of three children.

Edwards, Edward William Member of the First Mormon Handcart Company. Edmund Ellsworth was

the Captain. Arrived September 26, 1856 Worked at Camp Floyd as a Tailor for the soldiers. Shot in the leg by a drunken Camp Floyd soldier. Moved to Lehi in 1859 Was assistant choir director in Lehi for many years. Member of the First Lehi Choir in 1852

Led an expedition to White Mountains in Nevada to explore as a Mormon settlement.

City Hall Building Committee 1877 Served as City Treasurer 1867­68; 1875­77. Served as City Councilor 1867­74; 1877;1891­93; 1896­97 Served three terms as Mayor. The first two he was elected on the Peoples

party. Was the first Republican Mayor of Lehi in 1894­95. As a monogamist, he helped provide leadership at a time when other men of

prominence were in jail or in hiding. Served on the Board of Directors of the Lehi Irrigation Company. Mayor Ellingson directed the Lehi City Quarantine Board during the

Diphtheria epidemic in 1885. Founder of the Lehi Commercial and Savings Bank in 1891.

War and the Vietnam War. Traveled the World Engineer Member American Society of Civil Engineers Member American Society of Mechanical Engineers Member Society of Mining Engineers Worked for the Intermountain Power Agency Married Anna June Southwick of Lehi in 1975. Moved to Lehi in 1975. Resigned Mayor after 195 days. Cited conflict of Interest. He ran again as mayor and lost in 1985. Later years spent the winters in St. George and the Summers in Lehi.

Ellison, Harold

Purchased the Fashion Cleaners from Clyde McKay with Alvin Folkerson in December 1947. (101 West Main).

Ran Ellison Cleaners from 1947­1971. It was also known as Lehi Cleaners. Author of several section in the 1850­1950 Centennial History Member of the Jaycees Organization.

Engstrom, Chad Purchased the Ross Schoolhouse in 1893 and restored the building.

Enough, Abraham He was born about 1808 in St Jean, Jersey Island, Channel Island, England. His name is really spelled Esnouf He emigrated in 1855 (see resource for immigration) and came to Utah

Territory in Charles A Harper Company. He had two of his children with him Thomas (born in 1836) and Elizabeth

(born 1832 and died in 1905). He is found in the 1860, 1870, and 1880 census living in Lehi, Utah, Utah

Territory. Entered a contract with Robert Gilchrist to make adobes for him. Gilchrist allowed Enough to work for Woodhouse. For this Woodhouse

made Gilchrist and his brother each a pair of pants. “A portly little Frenchman”. Organized and Directed the First Band in Lehi­The Fife and Drum Company

in 1860. Played the Fife in the Band. Was the Mason for the City Hall on Main Street in 1872. Played the Bass violin in many early bands.

Erickson, George Henry Born July 8, 1884, in Koosharem, Utah, Moved to Lehi in 1899 to live at his uncle’s home, Mr. and Mrs. Charles A.

Ohran. He later attended Brigham Young University at Provo. While at the Ohran home he learned the brick mason trade at which he spent

a good portion of his life. He filled a mission for the Church in the Southern States from 1907­1910.

He was Ward Clerk of the Lehi First Ward from 1913 to 1916 Served as Bishop of the Lehi Fifth Ward 1928­1937 He personally supervised the construction of the Fifth Ward Chapel, and it

was built, paid for and dedicated while he was Bishop. The latter years of his life he worked for the Utah­Idaho Sugar Company,

doing repair work on their factories. He died on July 20, 1944.

Director of the Union Exchange. Built a building on 181­189 West Main to the Lehi Union Exchange. ZCMI was based on the Lehi Union Exchange. Brigham Young paid tribute to the Union Exchange in General Conference

on April 1869. The Peoples Cooperative put the Union Exchange out of business in 1880. Israel sold the business to the People’s Cooeprative in 1880. As Alderman, Israel Evans led the building of a new Cemetery in 1871 with

sexton George W. Thurmond. Pursued legislation to establish the Brigham Young Agricultural College (Utah

of Bandwagon Park 1976. Narrated the performances of the Lehi choral group­The HiLos Given many awards by the Womens Press Association and the Utah Press

Fox, Alfred Marshall Alfred Marshall Fox, son of Isaac Winn and Margaret Ann Slinn Fox, was

born September l 3, 1842 in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England. He came to Utah with his parents in October 1860. He married Mary Southwick January 4, 1868 in the Endowment House at Salt

Lake City. They had a family of eleven children, namely: Alfred E., Mary Marshall,

Martha Ann, Israel William, Ida, Maudie, Robert S., Jennie, Ethel, LaVon, and Herald.

Their first home was by the Jordan River, later they moved into the third ward where the house still stands.

As a young man, he made three trips east to the Missouri River to bring back emigrants.

He was a gifted musician and gave freely of his time and talents to the community and the church. He was a music teacher, accompanist, soloist and composed several hymns.

Tutored the members of the Lehi Silver Band each week on their instruments. One of the first Organists in Lehi. Played for church meetings in the Lehi

Meeting House. He was chosen leader of the first Brass Band of Lehi. He held the position of choir leader in the Third Ward for many years. He also served as president of the Young Men’s Mutual Improvement

Association in the Third Ward for a number of years. His occupation was farming, and music teacher. the latter taking him away

from his home much of the time. He died May 28, 1929. First Leader of the Lehi Brass Band in 1871.

Fox, Mary Southwick Mary Southwick, daughter of Edward and Mary Alexander Southwick, was

born March 11, 1852 in Birmingham, Staffordshire, England. She came to Utah with her parents in 1864. She learned the sorrows and hardships of the pioneers at an early age, her

mother having died, September 30, 1864, while crossing the Plains, and buried at North Platte, Wyoming.

She continued the journey with her father and upon arriving here made her home with a brother and his wife, William and Martha Southwick.

At the age of seventeen, she married Alfred Marshall Fox January 4, 1868, in the Endowment House in Salt Lake City.

She was the mother of eleven children. She died January 11, 1911 at the age of 58.

Gaisford, Sarah Ellen Sarah Ellen Gaisford, Daughter of John William and Louise Domon MOffett

was born January 8, 1871 In Salt Lake City. She was married to George Matthew Gaisford in 1885. They were pioneers of the Tintic District. To their union was born thirteen children: John William, Violet Beatrix, Sarah

Ellen, George Matthew, Pansy Blossom, Dewey Governor, Cedric Earl, Robert Hope, Louisa Janet, James Arthur, Eliza Jane, Elsie May, and Essie Fay.

She moved to Lehi in 1911 and there raised her large family and also four children belonging to her son Dewey.

She worked in the Silver Star Legion and was President for a number of

years. She was a member of the state committee when Memory Grove was founded

in Salt Lake City. She served as Chairman of the Lehi Red Cross for twenty years, and was a

member of the County Red Cross Board. She acted as Relief Society Teacher for over twenty­five years.

largest pumps in the world. General Manager Utah­Idaho Sugar Company Lehi Mayor when Memorial Building was built 1920­21 Lehi City Council Member 1901­1903 Utah County Commissioner for six years 1921­1926. Elected as a Utah Legislature in 1925. Built his home in Lehi which was called the Rose and Green Villa. Dedicated

by President Woodruff. It was at 187 East 300 North. First Bishop Lehi Second Ward 1903­1917 Instrumental in the creation of the State Bank of Lehi, State Bank of

American Fork, Lehi Roller Mills, the Commercial Club and the Lehi Mercantile.

Served as President of the Commercial Club Served an LDS Mission to the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii) where he was

called to work in a Sugar mill which he hated. Served on the School Board.

Garff, Christian Lehi Resident who created the Utah County Power and Light Company on

Garff, Lauritz (Louis) Born in Denmark in 1853 His father died coming across the plains. His mother married Gudmund Gudmundsen Purchased and Built the Wing Mortuary as his home at 118 East Main Street

in 1891. Sold it in 1910 to George Robinson. Started his first business in Lehi in 1885 Lehi City Councilor 1891­93 Built and Operated Lehi Opera House (Garff Hall) 1887 at 154 West Main. It

was a two story rock building. Died on July 21, 1890 at age 49.

Garrett, Ernest B. Ernest B. Garrett, son of James and Harriet Goble Garrett, were born in

Riverside, Millard County, Utah March 7, 1890. His boyhood days were spent working on the farm and herding sheep and

cattle. As a young man, he served his country in World War I. From the date of graduation from college, his time has been devoted to

teaching vocational agriculture in the High Schools of Utah; two years at Kanab High School; four years at the Moroni High School; where he also

served as principal and basketball coach; and twenty seven years at the Lehi High School.

He was president of the State Education Agricultural Vocational Association for two years; and the Alpine Teacher Association for two years.

He was president of the Lehi Garden Club for two years; and was a member of the Old Folks Committee of the Lehi Stake.

On June 24, 1919, he married Merle Thornton, a daughter of Edmund and Jennie Sargent Thornton.

Ernest and Merle Garrett are the parents of four, three of whom are living as follows: Ernest Thornton, Merle Udene, and Julia Adell.

Gilchrist, Ione Thurman Ione Thurman Gilchrist was born July 30, 1874 at Lehi, Utah the daughter of

David J. and Elgiva Evans Thurman. She received her education at the New West School, Lehi, Utah receiving a

diploma upon graduation. At the age of eighteen, she commenced a teaching career in the public

schools of Utah. She taught at Eden and Huntsville and for several years at the old Franklin School in Lehi.

In 1898, she was married to Sydney Gilchrist and became the mother of six children.

At the outbreak of World War I, she was called back to the school room where she continued to serve until ill health compelled her to resign.

Ione T. Gilchrist died January 25, 1939, having been a widow of eight years. Gilchrist, Mary Jane Willes

Mary Jane Willes Gilchrist was born in Lehi, Utah January 22, 1853, a daughter of William Sidney Smith and Alzina Lucinda Lott Willes.

She was the oldest of nine children. When she was eighteen, her father died. Her mother having ill health, the burden of the family fell on her shoulders.

Once in her teens, she had quite an experience with an indian brave. He gave her a bracelet and insisted she put it on and then left. Her father, hearing of the incident and knowing indian customs became alarmed. The indians and her friends returned to claim her as his bride, and much choice food was given to change his mind and make him take back the bracelet.

Mary Jane married Robert T. Gilchrist October 6, 1874 in the Endowment House. They had seven daughters and three sons, all three sons preceded her in death. She also reared a grandson.

She was active in church work, taught primary for many years and was Primary President for a time.

For eighteen years, she was a Relief Society District Teacher and served on the Old Folks Committee.

She died April 20, 1836 at the age of eighty­four. Gilchrist, Robert Taylor

Robert Taylor Gilchrist was born in Ayrshire, Scotland February 3, 1946. Robert joined the church in 1854 and came to America in 1861; and later was

the driver of a wagon crossing the plains with a freight company. He had many thrilling and terrifying experiences. They found arrow­riddled bodies

of many people killed by Indians. They also buried some from their own company who died along the way from sickness and hunger.

When he settled in Lehi, he started making shoes a trade in learned in Scotland. He walked to Salt Lake and back for his first supplies. With the advance of machinery, he change to carpentering, a trade he followed from then on, together with painting, papering, brick­laying and plastering.

Robert was a Black hawk War Veteran. Member of the first Lehi Bass Band in 1871. One of the Founders of the short lived Socialist Party in Lehi 1901. October 6, 1874, he married Mary Jane Willes in the Endowment House in

Salt Lake. They had ten children: Robert Sidney, John, Alice, Lileth, Zina, Janet, Ada, and Athena

At the age of seventy­six he climbed to the top of Mount Timpanogos with a group.

He was still active in mind and body at the time of his passing, in November 1936, at the age of ninety.

Gilchrist, Sydney He was born in Lehi, Utah, August 2, 1876. He was the son of Robert T. and

Mary Jane Willes Gilchrist. Lehi’s 22nd Mayor of Lehi 1918­1920; 1928­1931 Lehi City Councilmember 1914­1917; 1922­27 Went to the New West Academy In 1896, he entered the services of the Peoples Co­operative Store of Lehi.

He was with that business institution thirty years, resigning in 1926. In 1926 started Gilchrist Hardware. Member of the Lehi Volunteer Fire Department Appointed to Lehi’s first library board in 1917. Charter Member of the Lehi Lions club Active Member of the Municipal League Leader in the efforts to build Deer Creek Reservoir Mayor at the time of the approval to build the Memorial Building

In his church, he was appointed and served six years 1921­27, as President of the Elders Quorum.

Died from injuries of an automobile accident while in office; passed away January 23, 1931.

Giles, Ernest Afton Ernest Afton Giles, son of Heber J. and Susana Witt Giles, was born

September 9, 1892, in Heber City, Utah. He received his education in the Heber schools. He came to Lehi to make his home. He started working for the People’s

Co­operative Institution in 1919. He worked there until 1938. Purchases part of the Peoples Cooperative and forms Giles Feed in 1937. Initially used the building at 189 East State and then moved to the building at

197 East State. For a number of years, he was a member of the Lehi Lions Club. We served on the Lehi Fire Department for many years. In 1921, he was asked to be the Scoutmaster of the Second Ward Scouts.

He was the Scoutmaster when the first Second Ward Scouts were registered in the Timpanogos Council.

Later he worked in the Young Men’s Mutual Improvement Association presidency and in the Sunday School superintendency of the Second Ward.

He worked on the genealogical committee and was a ward teacher. On September 20, 1920, he married Leona Long in the Salt Lake Temple.

Giles, Dennis Director of the Lehi Silver Band

Giles, Leona Long Leona Long Giles, daughter of Felix G. and Mary Ellen Sharp Long, was

born February 24, 1897, in Lehi, Utah. Receiving her education in Lehi, she graduated from High School in 1916. Furthering her education, she received her teacher’s Normal Diploma from

the Brigham Young University. She taught in the Lehi Primary School.

She was active in the Second Ward Primary, teaching when her mother was president, and working in the presidency for eight years. She also served on the Alpine Stake Board and the Lehi Stake Board after the division.

She was a member of the Athenian Club. She was a member of the Garden Club. On September 15, 1920, she was married in the Salt Lake Temple to Ernest

Afton Giles, of Heber City, Utah. They resided on the same corner lot where she was born.

She was the mother of two sons, Stanford and Harold Giles. Gill, Joseph J.

Clara Evans Goates, daughter of Bishop David Evans and Margaret Christian Holm, was born December 21, 1876 in Lehi, Utah.

August 30, 1899, she was married to Joseph Goates, in the Salt Lake Temple and to this union, four children were born; Melba Clara (Mrs. Glen Clark), twin boys (Lorin Wayne and Warren LaMar) and LaPriel (Mrs. Norven W. Brown).

Because of her ability and love of fine arts, she was able to teach needlecraft in the schools.

Later she obtained employment at the People’s Co­operative Store, where

she was very diligent, and trustworthy at all times. During the second epidemic of influenza, she died January 30, 1920, at the

Lauritz (Louis) Graff was born in Eskebjerg, Denmark in 1853. First settled in Fairfield Louis Graff moved with his family to Weber County where they became

affiliated with an apostate Mormon group, the Morrisites. Moved to California with the Morrisites Came to Utah, and established a business in Lehi in 1885. Garff erected a large two­story rock building at 154 West Main in 1887. It was known both as Garff Hall and the Lehi Opera House. Louis Garff married late in life. He was 37 when he finally wed Amelia

Bromley on June 25, 1890. Within a year they moved into their new home at 118 East Main. But Garff’s life was cut short. He died on July 21, 1902 at age of 49. The Garff’s Main Street home was purchased in 1910, by George G.

Robinson, new owner of the Lehi Roller Mills. In the early 1920s , Robinson and his wife Beulah built the fine home at 489

North 100 East now owned by Ralph and Rose Hoover.

Grant, Ulysses S. Took over the Brown’s Hotel(Lehi Hotel) with B. W. Smith in October 1891. Changed the name to Hotel Lehi. Established the Alahambra Saloon in the Hotel. Their partnership dissolved soon after, and Grant took over the management

of just the Alahambra Saloon. Leverett Brown took back the hotel in 1895.

Grant, Mrs. Ulysses S. Established the Lehi Cafe in the Brown Hotel (Lehi Hotel) in 1891. Known for her fine confectionery. Known for have the finest cigars around. Known for having the finest ice cream in Lehi. Served fresh fruit, nuts and figs.

He was born September 21, 1936 in Lehi, Utah to Winford Preston Gray and Mary Elnora Williamson. He was the youngest of four children.

Dad was raised on the family farm and worked alongside his father and brother.

He graduated from Lehi High School. He married his sweetheart Phyllis Marjorie Fillmore on August 29, 1958.

They had 5 children. He worked most of his life for Hercules Inc. as a hazardous shipping

inspector. He built most of the furniture for their home. He served as president of the Lehi Boys Baseball Organization and sold

concessions as a fund raising activity for years. He enjoyed barbequing so much he opened his own catering business,

Cuddles Beef and Buns and was found grilling at many different events in and out of the state.

He served in many positions in the LDS Church including Sunday School President.

He passed away peacefully June 13, 2014 at his home in Lehi, UT at age 77 of natural causes.

Gudmundsen, Gudmund Joined the Morrisites and moved to Fairfield Established a goldsmith business based on trade with the soldiers in

Frogtown. Moved to California with the Morrisites. Rejoined LDS Church and moved back to Lehi. Opens the first Jewelry Store in Lehi 1871. The original structure at 164 West Main was a frame building built in 1874 by

goldsmith Gudmund Gudmundson. He purchased the property from the Lehi Union Exchange. He remained in business there until the early 1880’s. He moved to Logan where he died in 1883.

Hadfield, Charlotte Gough Charlotte Gough Hadfield, fifth daughter and tenth child of James and

Charlotte Crockett Gough, was born February 6, 1884, in Lehi, Utah. The Gough home was the first to be built on the highway above dry­creek. When the Lehi Stake was organized in July, 1928, she was chosen as a

member of the Relief Society Stake Board. She was released from the position July 15, 1938. She was also first counselor in the Third Ward Relief Society from 1932 to 1942.

She was married to William Hadfield in the Salt Lake Temple on June 28, 1905.

She is the mother of eight children, seven of whom are still living. They are as follows: Alice (Mrs. Doyle Carter) of Spanish Fork, Dale, Horace, Heber, Leo, Donna (Mrs. Jack Mitchell) and Willa (Mrs. Ralph Wing) all of Lehi.

Hadfield, William William Hadfield, second son and third child of Samuel Hadfield and Alice

Baker, was born June 3, 1879, in Provo, Utah. Adopted by Lehi Family­Thomas R. Jones Family. He attended the old Franklin School and the Lehi Central School and during

the year 1900 and 1901 he attended Brigham Young University. In May 1902, he received his call to serve in the Eastern States Mission, and

on October 15, 1902, he left making headquarters to New York City. During the last six months of his mission, he was called to preside over the New York Conference. He returned home in November 1904.

In 1910, he was chosen second counselor to Bishop Henry Lewis and served for thirteen years.

In 1923, he was ordained Bishop of the Lehi Third Ward by Apostle James E. Talmage. His counselors were John Hutchings and James H. Gray. He

served ten years as Bishop, making a total of 23 years in the Bishopric. On March 7, 1907, he became a rural mail carrier under postmaster S. W.

Ross. Under various means of transportation such as horse and buggy, closed in mail­cab, and early automobiles., he faithfully made his route for thirty­seven and one half years. He retired in July 1944.

In 1933, he was chosen high councilman in the Lehi Stake and served nine years, when he was chosen first counselor to President Thomas Leonard Peterson in the High Priest Quorum of the Lehi Stake and served in this capacity until 1947.

On June 28, 1906, he was married to Charlotte Gough in the Salt Lake Temple by John R. Winder.

Represented Utah at the National Convention of Mail Carriers. Superintendent of the 3rd Ward Sunday School 1904­1910.

Edna was born February 13, 1928 at the home of her parents, Myrtle Isabelle Orr Parker and William Russell Parker, in Orton, Alberta, Canada.

When Edna was 17, she married Fred, her sweetheart, in the Cardston, Alberta LDS Temple. It was July 4th 1945.

They owned and worked on a large turkey ranch for many years. In 1961, they moved to Utah. They then moved to Lehi in 1963, where Edna resided over the next 50 years. Edna worked doing Spanish extraction for the Church of Jesus Christ of

Latter­day Saints for over 22 years. Though she had no formal Spanish

language instruction, she told her children that she felt the Spirit while doing

this work and could read what was written in the records.

Edna’s six children include Nita Workman (David Workman), Ray Hardy

(Margie Geertsen Hardy), Roweena Rymer, (Terry Rymer), Merle Hardy

(Cynthia Mathias Hardy), Marie Sorensen (Lon Sorensen) and Susan

Edwards (David Edwards).

genealogy programs for the Church. Kept 85 volumes of her history that she donated to the Brigham Young

Eunice Colledge Hutchings, daughter of Thomas and Mary Slater Colledge, was born October 7, 1894, in Lehi, Utah.

She attended grade school at the New West , and graduated from Lehi High School May 20, 1913; having been active in drama and music.

She was a member of the Ladies chorus under both J.W. McCallister and Abraham Anderson.

She lived by the Jordan River, three miles from town. Often, when a horse was not available, she walked a distance of twelve miles, to and from school and church. Her education was paid by raising sugar beets.

Teacher in genealogy, Class Leader and Chorister in the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers.

She was stake Beekeeper for ten years and was awarded the Service Pin by Ruth May Fox for sixteen years service in Beehive and has collected extensively.

She was also a member of the ward and stake choirs. She was the mother of four children: Harold C., local Merchant; Eunice

Laurel (Merrill), Ft. Richardson, Alaska, Esther (Hebrew) Stewardess, Western Air Lines, and John La Mar, Postal Employee.

State Treasurer N.A.L.C. Auxiliary; and member of the Colonial Committee. Collector and Creator of the John Hutchings Museum Named Outstanding Utah Couple in 1967 by the Sons of the Utah Pioneers.

Hutchings, John John Hutchings, son of William Lawrence and Mary Wanlass Hutchings was

born in Lehi, Utah, on March 11, 1889, the youngest child of ten. The family consisted of six boys and four girls.

He attended school at Lehi and one year at the Brigham Young University. He started working in the mines when sixteen, following this occupation until

1918. He served an LDS mission to the Northern States Mission, Southern Illinois

advised that Lehi was to have a letter carrier in village delivery service, and to try for the position. He received his Civil Service appointment September 1, 1918, and acted in this service until his retirement in 1948.

He married Eunice Colledge, daughter of Thomas and Mary S. Colledge September 17, 1913, in the Salt Lake Temple.

Filled the offices of Sunday School Superintendent, President of the Young Men’s Mutual Improvement Association, Scoutmaster, Ward Bishopric, and member of Lehi Stake Young Men’s Mutual Improvement Association Board.

He has a natural tendency for collecting natural history specimens and at the present time had one of the finest collections in the state.
