The Legend of the SkyHawk is part ofthe tradition of Skutt Catholic. Thestory goes that the SkyHawk is socalled because it soars higher than anyother of its species. Everyone at SkuttCatholic, each in their own way, triesto be legendary like this. The studentswho stayed at school for unreal hoursto complete a beautiful musical: theyare legends. The Legend of the SkyHawk is a challengeto all who enter the halls of Skutt Catholic:how will you soar higher than the rest? How will you make a difference? You’rethe only one who can answer that question.Be a Legend. Make a difference.

With clear minds, open hearts, and green hair...the Varsity Volleyball team took State for thefirst time ever. This legendary turn of events didn't come easily; it took hard work and a tonof dedication from all the girls involved. The team had a better than average season, with no more than two losses documented. "We kept a positive attitude the wholeseason and it really helped us reach our goal of winning state," senior BrookeSwain said, keeping us in the know of how attitude can keep you focusedon and off the court. After years of getting so close, they approachedthis season with their eyes on the prized. Clearly everything paid offin the end, because they're first time STATE CHAMPS!

Senior Alyssa Woodman (Above) had an amazing last season. Winning state for the first time ever was extremelyimportant to everyone; she made it clear how it has made her senior year the best one yet. "It was really
disappointing to come so close and then lose last year," said Woodman, "But it really gave us the motivationto work harder. This was a great year for our team, and I could not be more proud to be a part of such an
amazing team. I'm glad to know that we were the first State Champs!" said Woodman.

Return of the JV: a comeback story. While last years' JV teams might have done aserviceable job, this year's team knew that they couldn't settle for just goodenough. The varsity team this year will graduate nine seniors, so even thoughthese JV members were playing for the season at hand, for many it wouldprobably be their last season of growth before being called up to the bigs.Close wins, like those against Lincoln Pius, the always-formidable BeatriceOrangemen, and rivals Elkhorn South show that this team is ready for thefuture. So, even though this team has already achieved a degree of successin their time, we hope that their best years are yet ahead of them, and thatwhen the time comes to step up, their time on JV will have prepared themwell.

This year's freshmen teams were definitely legendary, but not in theway you might expect. SkyHawks, while non-predatory, are fierce but
honorable competitors. This was shown perfectly during a game againstrival Elkhorn. The last game of the season was coming to an end, and
Elkhorn's team manager Shawn Kortan was suited up to play. Kortan hasDown's Syndrome, and loves basketball. Skutt Catholic and Elkhorn saw an
opportunity to make his year by giving him the chance to get in the game. On hisfirst possession, Kortan got a steal and ran down for a layup, but missed. With
encouragement from both teams though, he went for a second shot. When hedrained it, the crowd blew up, and Kortan was cheered by all the players along with
the stands. These SkyHawks may win more games, but they are already legendary.

Senior year is full of lasts. For the senior's last retreat the theme was "My faith, my future." The goal of the retreat is is to focus on moving forward and learning how to take faith forward in life. Through out the day, the seniors reflected back on times throughout the past four years here at Skutt Catholic and evaluate where they stand now, and learn how to look forward to the future. Ms. French was more than pleased with the day. "From the retreat the seniors get a sense of community within the class. A lot of people step up and say some cool things to support their classmates. It is a time to take a break from the busy life of a teenager and enjoy time with the class." The seniors break into small groups and do ] activities from self reflection, to strength activities, and the seniors' favorite: the skits. The seniors had a memorable last retreat that they will hopefully take with them when their time here at Skutt Catholic is over.
Senior Retreat Moving Moving
One thing that is commonthroughout all four retreats atSkutt is the open mic. Anyonewho chooses to speak has thechance to go in front of theirclass and say what they want. This year Neil Osborn stood outwith his message to the seniorclass. "I basically just said ifanyone needs a friend orsomeone to talk to, that theycould always come to me"Osborn told his class. Neil's coolmessage was heard by many andappreciated. "I wanted everyoneto know they do not have to bealone."

The freshman retreat is a chance for the freshman class to get to know and learn about each other. One of the goals of the retreatis to build a strong base for the freshmen's next four years here at Skutt Catholic. This year the freshman class got plenty out of
the full day filled with activities and prayer. "One of the major goals of the retreat is for the freshman to get to know morepeople at the school, and the students most definitely did," explained Ms. French. This year's theme was "Ignite the Flame,"
which describes how one's faith will inspire them throughout their life. The freshmen learned how to ignite their talents andgifts through the Holy Spirit. Throughout the day, the freshmen participated in many activities which included making 55
tie blankets for the Project Linus Organization, a scavenger hunt around the entire school, and small group discussion inassigned classrooms themed by the upper classmen leaders. Freshman retreat is made to unite the class as one
which the class of 2019 had no problem doing.

Walking down the hallways, you wouldn't guess all of the other footstepsthat have walked the same path. Many are cousins, older siblings, andyounger family members soon to walk these halls. People in the SkuttCatholic community continue the familiy traditions of going to Skutt Catholicto receive the same education that they received, which includes moral and
life lessons taught from the same teachers and superiors that they wereable to learn from. Here are some families that you may not have knownare related that go to Skutt Catholic, and have gone to Skutt Catholic. Notall of them are students, but some are related to our very own teachersand faculty.

The first class to graduate from SkuttCatholic did so 22 years ago, andamong those receiving diplomasthat day were high schoolsweethearts David Grauman andHeidi Van Geem. Little did they knowthat one day they would be writinga first and legendary chapter in SkuttCatholic history. The two met at theirjunior retreat when they were put inthe same group, and hit it offinstantly. David was a varsitybasketball player and cross countryrunner, while Heidi worked justdown the road at Vidlak's. Soonafter graduation, they got marriedand started a family, while alsobalancing their school lives. Bothstayed in town; David went to UNOwhile Heidi went to College of St.Mary's. Today, they are a happyfamily with five kids, and their oldest,Jon, will be the first legacy SkyHawkalumni when he graduates in the
spring. "I think it's cool, and sort ofweird," said Jon, "having some ofthe same teachers who taught myparents, like Mrs. Lenz and Mr.Meyers. It's crazy to think that myparents also walked these halls."Jon's parents notice many of thechanges that Skutt Catholic hasundergone since their time. "Skutthas grown and gotten muchbigger," said Jon's father, David. "It'simpressive what a powerhouse inNebraska they are now." Joncertainly won't be the last Graumanto become a SkyHawk either; Jon'syounger siblings attend St. Stephenthe Martyr, and are also SkyHawksfrom birth. Leah, 12, Evette, 5, andtwins Emma and Gavin, 2, willsomeday walk the same halls thattheir parents and brother once did,and carry on the unique legacy ofbeing the first family who are trulylegendary SkyHawks.
