This letter explains that as our shepherd he is restoring the order of the Sacraments of Initiation to their original, historical order: Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. The Archbishop has asked every parish to implement this change by engaging in a five-year process that lowers the age of Confirmation, so that all children in the Archdio- cese of Denver will receive Confirmation and First Eucharist in the third grade by 2020. As your pastor, I would like to take a few moments to explain why Archbishop Aquila has decided to do this. The ultimate reason is to equip children with the grace they need to become saints in today’s non-Christian environ- ment, genuine disciples and witnesses for the new evangelization with a profound relationaship with each person of the Holy Trinity. There are theological reasons also: Celebrating Confirmation before First Eucharist is the correct theological order. Bap- tism and Confirmation “are bound up with the Eucharist and are oriented toward it. For in the blessed Eucharist is contained the whole spiritual good of the Church, namely Christ himself ….” (Catechism #1324). In Confirmation, we are strengthened in our identity by the seal of the Holy Spirit and the outpouring of his gifts. These gifts of the Holy Spirit help us engage more deeply in worshipping the Father through Jesus in the Eucharist. In addition to the theological rational, there are pastoral motives as well. Families are under a lot of pressure from our increasingly secular culture to abandon some aspects of the Catholic faith. By restoring Confirmation to its rightful place, Archbishop Aquila wants to empower parents to help their children become more deeply rooted in the faith. As a result of moving Confirmation to a younger age, religious education programs and parents will be able to focus on a dis- cipleship model of teaching children the faith. Experience has shown that the current classroom model is not nearly as effective at handing on the faith as the discipleship approach that Christ himself used with the 12 Apostles. The Archbishop’s letter, a list of FAQs, and a video documentary are available online at www.archden.org/saints . The parish also has some copies of the letter and other resources available as well. May the Lord bestow the Holy Spirit and his gifts and charisms upon our youth, our families and our entire parish community, so that we may bear fruit for eternal life. SAINTS AMONG US

With today’s celebration of Pentecost, Archbishop Aquila has issued a pastoral letter to the Archdiocese called, Saints Among Us. This letter explains that as our shepherd he is restoring the order of the Sacraments of Initiation to their original, historical order: Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. The Archbishop has asked every parish to implement this change by engaging in a five-year process that lowers the age of Confirmation, so that all children in the Archdio-cese of Denver will receive Confirmation and First Eucharist in the third grade by 2020. There are theological reasons also: Celebrating Confirmation before First Eucharist is the correct theological order. Bap-tism and Confirmation “are bound up with the Eucharist and are oriented toward it. “One of the gravest risks our epoch faces, amid the oppor-tunities offered by a market equipped with every techno-logical innovation, is the divorce between economics and morality, the basic ethical norms of human nature are in-creasingly neglected. It is therefore necessary to express the strongest possible opposition to every direct attack on life, especially against the innocent and defenseless, and the unborn in a mother’s womb is the example of inno-cence par excellence. Let us remember the words of the Second Vatican Council: “Life must be protected with the utmost care from the moment of conception: abortion and infanticide are abominable crimes” (Pastoral Constitu-tion Gaudium et Spes, n. 51).”

CALLED TO THE PERMANENT DIACONATE?

Ever thought about being a deacon? Would you like to know more who a deacon is? If so, then mark your calen-dars. The St. Francis School of Theology for Deacons (St. John Vianney Theological Seminary) will host a Discern-ment Retreat on Saturday, May 30th for men and their wives who are interested in learning more about the diaconate. This informational day will begin with Mass at 7:00 a.m. and will end by 12:15 p.m. The meetings will be held at the John Paul II Center (1300 S. Steele Street, Denver, 80210). The day will include spiritual time as well as time for infor-mation. There is no cost for this day and breakfast will be provided. All married men are expected to bring their wives, since a commitment to serve the Church as a deacon involves the entire family. RSVP’s are required, which can be done by contacting Evelyn at the office of St. Francis School of Theology for Deacons (303) 715-3236 or email [email protected].

Adult Study on Book of Acts @ St. Pius starting June 9th

On Tuesday night, our Adult Education group has decided to begin a Study of the Book of Acts that will run weekly on Tuesday nights beginning on June 9th. The Study will use an entertaining DVD series on the Book of Acts and go through the entire Book using an accompanying easy-to-follow Study Guide. No prior Biblical experience is necessary. All are invited. Cost is to be determined (but will be less than $20).

The Book of Acts is about how the early church became a unified group of believers in spite of language and cul-tural barriers through the power of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, the Adult Education Group is extending a heartfelt invitation to members of our Hispanic and Ghanian communities to consider joining this study. Over the years, the 30-40 individuals who have partici-pated in our Tuesday night Adult Study Programs have formed deep, lasting friendships. We would love to make new friends with all of you!
