MAIL CALL

Q. Every Sunday at Mass we say we

believe in “the resurrection of the

Body. My college graduate son asks:

What about the people who were

blown to bits by a bomb? What about people whose bodies

were devoured by wild animals? Then there are those who have

been dead for so long there is nothing left but dust. He asks me

why I continue to believe such things..

A. We shouldn’t think of our resurrected body as necessarily our

present body. My wife placed four photos of me on our mantel.

One was taken at about age 10; another is my graduation

picture (age 18). There is another of me in my mid forties and

another in my early sixties. Each photograph is indeed of me,

and yet the bodily makeup of me in each photograph is

completely different.

Science tells us that our bodies renew every cell every seven

years. In a way, every seven years we get a different body. Each

photo is indeed of me, but none of them is a photo of the eternal

me. This body that I think of as ME is really very temporary. It’s

always changing. Nevertheless, there is also a part of me that is

constant with all the different bodies I have inhabited and it was

present in all four of those photos on the mantel.

We were made in the image and likeness of God (Gen 1:27).

We know that He is a three part being: Father, Son and Holy

Spirit. We too are a three part being: body, soul and spirit.

But where is our soul and spirit? They are not in our bodies like

water in a jug; they are in our bodies like water in a sponge. We

are ensouled bodies. Our soul & spirit are in every cell of our

being. The perishable cells of our bodies are intermingled with

our imperishable soul and spirit. Therefore, our resurrection will

be the soul and spirit that is in our every cell today which will be

united with fresh new everlasting cells referred to as our glorified

body (see 1 Corinthians 15:42-44 & CCC 988-1004).

The Church refers to such things a “mysteries.” Mysteries are

something we can grasp the concept of, but our human

understanding falls far short of understanding the intricacies. 1

Corinthians 13:12 St. Paul writes: “For now we see through a

glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then I

shall know even as I am known.”

When we Christians are challenged on any of the mysteries of

our faith that we don’t really understand or can’t explain, we

should simply declare:

God said it! Jesus did it! The Church teaches it! I believe it!

And:. that settles it!

Please email your questions to [email protected]

Volunteers Needed

Who are we? A group of lay people who pray, work, and laugh together. What we do? Bring Jesus to nursing homes, foster care facilities, and the home bound. Where are we located? The “green room” in the basement at Holy Family Parish. When are we there? 9am - 4pm Thursday and Friday, and Tuesday evenings after 7:00 pm Mass.

Family Fun Festival News!! Comedy Show Saturday Night

August 6, 2016

This year Gary George and Billy Ray Bauer will come and entertain us. Gary George has been making people laugh for as long as he can remember - from his days at school, when he played in a band he was always the joker of the group. He left school and by profession is a qualified and very skillful carpenter - but entertainment was a l w a y s h i s p a s s i o n . ( h t t p : / /www.benidormallyearround.com/3919-gary-george-popular-

benidorm-comedian) Billy Ray Bauer, our headliner has been performing stand-up comedy across America for the last 25 years. From headlining at great comedy clubs to performing for large corporations, he’s established himself as a tried and true funny guy. http://www.billyraybauer.com/blog/home. During the intermission, there will be a live auction, where many fabulous items will be auctioned off by our favorite funny guy, Fr. Joe Horn. It is a fun night out at a reasonable price and let’s not forget, for a good cause. Dinner is included with the show and there will be free child care for those who will need it. (Child care must be planned before July 25th). Right after, there are front row seats for the firework show that Memphis puts on. You won’t want to miss it! As always, we thank you in advance for helping make this year’s Festival a success!

BABY ITEM COLLECTION FOR BLUE WATER

PREGNANCY CARE CENTER

During the month of May we will be collecting new baby items for the Blue Water Pregnancy Care Center. This facility counsels young pregnant moms to keep their babies or place them up for adoption rather than aborting them. Many of these moms have nothing for their babies so this is where we come in. Any items are appreciated but here are some of their needs: Diapers (newborn to size 2), onesies (newborn to size medium), bibs, outfits (newborn to 12 months), pajamas (newborn to size 12 months), hooded towels and baby washcloths, Desitin, baby shampoo, baby soaps and lotions, baby toys, crib sheets, baby blankets, etc. Your kindness and generosity may make the difference of saving a life. Thank you for always answering our call.

GREETINGS TO ALL ST. AUGUSTINE SCHOOL AND PARISH GROUPS, COMMISSIONS, COMMITTEES, AND ORGANIZATIONS!!

Before June 1, 2016, please take the time to have your chairperson or a member call ANNA KUNTZ, Parish Council Secretary, at 586.727.3910. Leave a message with your name, the group that you represent and a telephone number with a time that she can call you back. The parish council is compiling a list of all parish organizations, identifying who the members are and understanding how your group functions within the parish community. Parish council is eager to hear from you and will be working toward formulating a plan to disseminate this information once we have collected it. In order to better serve our brothers and sisters of the parish, we need to know who we are and what we all do! THANK YOU FOR YOUR PARTICIPATION AND

ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER!

Parish Council Corner

My name is Deborah Michon and I have been on St. Augustine’s par-ish council for the last six years. These years have seen a lot of changes for St. Augustine Parish. We clustered with Holy Family Par-ish, we welcomed a new pastor,

Father Joe Horn, a new associate pastor, Father Phil Ching, and then last year Father Sean Bonner joined us as Fr. Phil was reassigned elsewhere. We’ve had changes in our parish festival, and so many other events and activities. It has been a struggle sometimes but a rewarding time for me to see us working together to keep St. Augustine Parish and our school a viable community.

It is that time of year, where the Parish Council needs to fill two three year terms. One of these terms is for me as my time is up on the council. To be a member you should be fully initiated and active in the parish, equipped to serve in this capacity with a reputation for integrity, able to work in groups, prayerful with an awareness of God; open to the Spirit, capable of relating to people, at least 16 years of age, and not a member of the parish staff. We meet the second Wednesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. for about two hours.

I encourage you to consider this opportunity to be a leader in our parish. If you feel that this is something you can do, please fill out a nomination form that will be in church in the coming weeks and drop it in the offertory collection. Want to nominate someone? Please ask them first. If you have questions, please contact me at 586-630-8604. I would gladly share with you my experi-ences over the last six years.

Greetings from 7th

and 8th

Grade!

Every May, people ask me, “Aren’t you ready for the

school year to be over?” Typically, I think of images of summer and respond with an enthusiastic, “Yes!” But over the last three years – every May, there is always something that bothers me in that response; the school year ending means I have to say goodbye.

This year is particularly difficult because I have had my amazing 8th

grade students for three years. We have learned together, laughed together, and grown together. Matthew, Mateusz, Anthony, Annaleise, Grace, and Drew – your academic, social, athletic, and spiritual achievements and contributions to our St. Augustine family are unparalleled. You truly embody the beauty of being a Catholic school student who takes his or her faith and lets it shine!

My message to you actually comes from a song by Rascal Flatts:

“I hope you never look back, but you never forget, All the ones who love you, in the place you live, I hope you always forgive, and you never regret, And you help somebody every chance you get,

Oh, you find God's grace, in every mistake, And always give more than you take.

But more than anything, yeah, more than anything My wish, for you, is that this life becomes all that

you want it to, Your dreams stay big, your worries stay small,

You never need to carry more than you can hold, And while you're out there getting where you're

getting to, I hope you know somebody loves you, and wants

the same things too”

Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your journey, and remember, you always have a family and home here at St. Augustine!

~Mrs. Julie Nader, 7th/8
