...Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.”... ....” And when he
had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are re-tained.” John 20:21-23
Page 2 Saint John the Evangelist From the Pastor June 9, 2019 Dear Friends in Christ, There is a very disturbing bill that has passed the Senate and is now on its way to the Cali-fornia State Assembly. The bill is referred to as SB 360 by state Senator Jerry Hill (D-San Mateo). The motivation for the bill is noble, to uncover and stop the abuse of children, but only under certain circumstances. SB 360 would make it a crime if a priest heard the con-fession of a child abuse victim or a child abuser and failed to break the Seal of Confession to report what they heard in the confessional to law enforcement. As you know, Confession and Penance are central to the practice of our Catholic Faith. Nei-ther the Legislature nor the author of this bill understands the meaning of Confession to Catholics, or, if they do, they do not respect it. Confession is an act where a person reveals his or her conscience to God, hoping to receive His mercy. It helps us prepare to receive the Eucharist and to participate fully in our Faith. It reminds us and shows us the power of God's love. Recently, SB 360 was amended to reduce its scope. Instead of having to report the con-tents of all Confessions heard by a priest, the bill would only require the reporting on the contents of some Confessions he has heard. Chaplains in prisons would be allowed to re-spect the Seal of Confession if they heard the Confession of an inmate, but not of a prison guard or other prison worker. Chaplains at hospitals could anoint the sick and hear their Confessions, but they could not hear the Confessions from doctors, nurses, and other hospi-tal staff without be required to report what they heard. Even more alarming, priests could not hear the Confessions of other priests without report-ing contents to law enforcement. Nor could they hear Confessions from their work col-leagues at parishes, schools, colleges, Catholic Charities, or anyplace else they worked with-out having to report the contents to law enforcement. For the priest, it is a mortal sin and automatic Excommunication for him to reveal the contents of a person's confession no matter what the confessed sins may be. In the past, priests have chosen torture and death rather that break the Seal of Confession. That's how important it is! Please rest assured that none of your priests would or will ever break the Seal of Confession, for we answer to God and not to the State in religious matters. The certainty of absolute confidentiality and the knowledge that Confession is a sacred con-versation with God encourages Catholics to seek out and receive God's mercy. Frankly, the State has absolutely no right to hear the contents of a penitent's confession regardless of its contents. Please let your state legislators hear from you. Please tell them that SB 360 is a bad bill and should not be approved and sent to Governor Newsom.

Capital Campaign - Did you know?
Making a pledge to St. John's capital campaign allows us to forecast income/expenses and begin construction projects with-out becoming over-exposed to debt. Pledges also allow us to pool our resources in larger and more powerful way to impact large building projects and renovations on our campus. While donations are always appreciated, what we need now are pledges. Hundreds of families pledging to give a constant amount every month allows us to fund the necessary costs for architects, engineers, contractors and equipment. Finally, "capital campaign pledges" are separate from "building fund donations". Donations to the building fund help offset maintenance costs and upkeep to our facilities, while capital campaign pledges raise millions of dollars and allow for the building and investment of new assets on our parish cam-pus. During a capital campaign, pledges are the only way to impact the success of our building projects. Please turn in a pledge envelope with a monthly amount over 40, 50, or 60 months to ensure our multi-million building projects can be com-pleted. "Building funds" raise thousands of dollars for maintenance; "Capital Campaign Pledges" raise millions for future development, expansion and growth.
