Classical Music

Page 2: PENTATONE Highlights 2015

Music of today is evolving and forever changing, but classical music stays true in creating harmony among the instruments.

Classical music is as time-honored as it is timeless. And so should the experience be.

Page 3: PENTATONE Highlights 2015

Violinist Arabella Steinbacher has firmly established herself as one of today’s leading violinists on the international concert scene and performs with the world’s major orchestras. Recording exclusively for PENTATONE, her diverse and deep repertoire nowadays includes more than thirty concertos for violin. “The world can never have enough brilliant, beautiful young violinists and Munich-born Arabella Steinbacher is a classic of the species.” (The Sunday Times)

Marek JanowskiSince the late 1970s, Marek Janowski has regularly appeared at all of the major opera houses worldwide, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York and the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, as well as in San Francisco, Hamburg, Vienna and Paris. More than 50 recordings, including many opera recordings and complete symphonic cycles — most of which have received various international prizes — over the past 35 years have demonstrated Marek Janowski’s special mastery of conducting.

During his tenure as artistic director at Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Janowski has made 13 recordings for PENTATONE, including the complete symphonies of Anton Bruckner, a recording hailed by international music critics. The complete symphonies is released as a box set in April 2015.

THE AMBITIOUS WAGNER SPECIALIST

“Every so often a CD comes along that is just about perfect. That is how I feel about the new Bruckner Fourth from Marek Janowski and the Suisse Romande. It is swift and graceful, like the old Kertész,

recorded in limpid perspective, with sound that ranges from gleaming to glowing…Here is the best all-around Bruckner Fourth I know.” (Fanfare on Bruckner Symphony No.4)

NEW ARTIST

Then there were the bravura flourishes of the strapping and exuberant German-Canadian cellist Johannes Moser…who threw himself bodily into a performance of Shostakovich’s

Cello Concerto No. 1… Mr. Moser’s (performance) fought everyone on equal terms, and he brought the house down.” (New York Times)

Johannes MoserPENTATONE’s newest artist and Artist of the Season July – December 2015, cellist Johannes Moser is hailed by Gramophone as “one of the finest among the astonishing gallery of young virtuoso cellists”. His first project with PENTATONE is recording Cello Concertos from Dvorak and Lola with Jakub Hrůša and the Prague Philharmonia and is released in September 2015.

Limited Edition Wagner Box In 2010, PENTATONE decided to embark on the ambitious project of recording the ten major Wagner operas with the same musical forces. Never before had a record company recorded these operas with the same orchestra, choir and conductor, even the same producer, within a period of two and a half years. All of the performances (including the Ring Cycle) were recorded live, with each

opera being given only one attempt. It was recorded for the first time in multi-channel surround sound and — as is customary for PENTATONE — with the highest technical quality. Don’t miss the opportunity to own this jewel of a piece! The box set consists of 32 SACDs plus one DVD, which contains an interview with Marek Janowski and some fragments from Götterdämmerung.

“That sums up this surround set. This is as worthwhile a Wagnerian offering as you are going to see in 20 years.” (Audiophile Audition)

Beethoven The Complete Piano Sonatas Mari Kodama

The autumn 2013 release of the final CD marked the completion of Mari Kodama’s extraordinary project to record the full collection of 32 Beethoven Sonatas for PENTATONE. As Gramophone eloquently phrases it: ‘Never bearing down heavily on the music, she always allows Beethoven his own voice.’

Once again Ms. Kodama meets all expectations in the pursuit of these horizons, and she entirely takes on the challenge with the last instalment of her critically-acclaimed journey through this ever-fascinating cycle. It is then only fair that this feat is celebrated in the form of a collector’s item SACD box set with its larger-than-life surround sound.
