OMG We Did It! We
made it to YEAR
12 as Rowers!!
Presidents Report
A warm welcome to all returning rowers, new rowers and parents to the
2016 Penrhos Rowing Season. My name is Frances Schild and I am your
president of the support group for 2016 and a parent of a year 12 rower.
Thank you to the 2015 support group committee and parent volunteers,
in particular our past president Shirley Anne Fortina for her leadership,
guidance and support last year. Shirley Anne continues to remain
involved in our support group this year by co-ordinating and publishing the Penrower.
Keith and his committed team of coaches are slowly easing you all into pre-season training.
It’s been fantastic to see the year 10’s embracing the early morning training, Saturday
fitness with Rita & Wednesday ergos with Amber along with the seniors. Fitness along with
technique is key to a successful rowing career. We look forward to seeing more year 9
rowers down at the river for afternoon training, encourage your
friends to try this wonderful sport, it is never too late!
We have a busy calendar ahead so I encourage you to reserve these
times and dates in your diary (see full calendar of events further on).
The year 12 rowers are off to Melbourne for a once in a lifetime
experience …………. more details to follow in the next edition, I don’t
want to spoil some surprises we have in store for the girls.
We will be sending specific rowing medical forms to all parents shortly which I encourage
you to sign and return to me or Keith as soon as possible.
Finally, we have a Support Group Meeting on the 7th March 2016 at 7pm at the boat shed
and I would love to see more year 9 parents there so we can answer any questions you may
have.
Regards Frances

We are having a great start to our rowing season. And
I would like to take this time to thank everyone for
their help so far. Rowing Support Group, Coaches
and you girls, thank you all for helping.
It is going to be another fantastic year with our new
Rowing Support Group already on the job and
organizing so many events already.
The 1st regatta is to be hosted by Penrhos and it will be our best yet. We have so much on
the calendar already so please make their job a little easier by getting back forms and
replying to emails as soon as possible.
The year 10s and Seniors are training on Monday 5.30am, Wednesday after school,
Thursday 5.30am and Saturday mornings fitness 7.00am.
Year 9s are rowing on Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons after school.
Freshies can come down anytime they wish at this time.
I do know that with Shirley Anne on the job as editor of Penrower we can expect some
oarsome editions.
Melbourne. Many thanks to Rachael Gilchrist for
all her hard work in organizing and booking our
year 12 rowing trip. It is going to be a lot of fun and
a bit of hard work. We will have many photos of the
trip in the next edition.
New quad. We have just received a shiny and fast looking new quad. Hope to have a boat
naming soon. Just a reminder that my name is spelt Keith.
This is thanks to all the hard work from you guys and organized by the Rowing Support
Group that we have a world class boat for all to race in.
It is almost that time again!
If we are all training hard now the camp is going to be a beautiful thing. For those that
have not been before it is a top spot and a great weekend away to have a paddle and get to
know the squad.
Captains of Boat. Please have a think about who you would like to
lead you this season. Voting soon.
Let’s have a great kick --- year and I hope they find a better photo of
me than what they had on last year.
Thank you all
Keith xxx
Secretary – Lizzie Smith
With my girls rowing in Yr10 and Yr12 this season, I'm familiar with the
toing and froing of a few rowing seasons, and some of the workings of the
PRSG. This is a new role for me, but you can count on my enthusiasm to
document the PRSG activities in a semi-coordinated fashion, and to keep
the rowers, their wonderful parents & the coaches all up to date as our girls
row hither, thither & yon!
You will be hearing from Lizzie on a regular basis and in our next edition you will meet the
PRSG Committee!
MANY HANDS MAKE LIGHT WORK!!
A reminder that we need your help – please put
your hand up to help out with the various
activities, events and functions!
The Penrhos Rowing Support Group is continuing its association with the Astrofest Event
at Curtin University with our fund raising sausage sizzle. The Rowing Support Group
runs a sausage sizzle throughout the afternoon and into the evening, providing food for
event staff and participants. The Astrofest attracts around 4,000 people for an evening of
stargazing, information sessions and activities for students of all ages. The best part is that
it is a FREE event!
This year, the event will be held on Saturday, 12th March, commencing at 4.30pm and
concluding around 9.30pm.
We are seeking parent and student helpers for 90-
minute time slots to help with a variety of duties
including setting up, cooking sausages, serving
customers and assisting with the clean up
afterwards.
We encourage all families associated with Penrhos
Rowing to consider volunteering some of their
time to help us out. Ideally we need four adults
and four students to volunteer for each time slot
to ease the pressure on all.
All girls assisting on the night can count their
time towards their community service hours, so
bring your books along with you!
To get involved or find out more please contact the Astrofest Coordinator:

Coach Profile – Louise Blackmore
1998 – 9A Squad First Eight 2001
Four names I go by:
1. “Lou Lou” – most normal people in my life call me this
2. “Weezie” – my little brother James’ baby name for me has unfortunately stuck 3. “LouB Mobile” – my high school friends kindly named me after a mobile mechanic so
as to distinguish me from our friend Louise N (she got the very inoffensive “LouN” as a nickname)
4. “Possum” or “Possum Magic” (my mum’s embarrassing name for me)
Four places I have worked:
1. Club Med Resorts – fitness instructor/amateur acrobat in Malaysia, Bali and the
Whitsundays 2. Zest Fitness – teaching BodyPump and BodyCombat
3. IGA deli girl – bathing in ham juice for days at a time may be the reason I’m now vegetarian
4. Native Arc – wildlife rescue and rehabilitation centre in Bibra Lake
Four things I love to watch:
1. Fast, clean and effective rowing (especially when it’s my crew doing it)
2. The Eagles smashing the Dockers in Western Derbies 3. Movies, all of the movies, any movies
4. Gossip Girl (shhhhhhhh it’s my secret shame)
Four (favorite) places I have visited:
1. Japan 2. Spain
3. Canada 4. My bed, after training, most days, for a nap, I’m old now, leave me alone
Four things I hate: 1. Traffic – cannot even deal 2. Children telling me when I should or should not shave my legs
3. Catches with no backsplash 4. Finishes with no tap down
Four things I love to eat: 1. Chocolate – the non-dairy versions that don’t taste like cardboard (i.e. not many)
2. Ice-cream – Ben and Jerry’s are making a non-dairy version and I actually cannot wait
3. Broccoli – the vegetable of kings and queens 4. That delicious new popcorn – the slightly sweet and slightly salty kind mmmmmm
Four favorite drinks: 1. Water 2. Herbal tea
3. Sports drinks 4. I literally drink nothing else in my life, except smoothies, but I make them so thick
that actually it’s more like eating and less like drinking (i.e. spoons get involved)
Four things I love doing:
1. Coaching obnoxious school children – you know who you are 2. Exercising so hard I almost throw up but not quite (it’s a precise game…)
3. Yoga to recover from 2. 4. Hanging with my ridiculous family
Four things I am looking forward to: 1. Finishing my PhD so I can make people call me Dr Blackmore except for when I’m on
planes because then they might expect you to save lives in a crisis or something
2. That’s all, nothing else going on really
NO! That
can’t be
right!!
