Penn Medicine’s programs and projects extend beyond our institution to serve vulnerable populations in our surrounding Philadelphia community and to those in need around the world. Penn faculty are researching diseases, educating students, and treating patients in hospitals and mobile clinics, in partnership with institutions in Botswana, Guatemala, and Peru, and with many other international groups. Our community also comes together to support humanitarian and medical relief efforts across the globe, including aid to Ebola-stricken nations in West Africa.
In collaboration with the University, Penn Medicine continues the 14-year-old Penn-Botswana Partnership, with its focus on HIV/AIDS, cervical cancer, heart disease, educating local health care workers, and telemedicine. The Guatemala-Penn Partnership offers students a variety of training opportunities as well. The Penn-Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia partnership offers students clerkships in internal medicine, infectious diseases, and tropical medicine.
17
A TRADITION OF GLOBAL AND LOCAL ENGAGEMENT
AIDING THE COMMUNITY FROM WITHIN
Improving the health of people living throughout the Philadelphia area is among Penn Medicine’s highest priorities. Every day, physicians, nurses, medical students, and staff volunteer their knowledge, skills, and time to benefit residents in our community. They operate free neighborhood clinics, help low-income residents obtain primary care, and run after-school programs for grade school students, among many other efforts.
Penn Medicine’s CAREs grant program supports faculty, student, and staff efforts to increase volunteerism in community-based programs. Since the program was established in 2012, CAREs has provided grants to nearly 120 initiatives throughout the region, including dental care for uninsured people, a free health clinic operated by medical students, Reiki therapy training for hospice workers, and many others.
