The first opportunity to hear from Sidney’s candidates for mayor in this fall’s municipal elec-tion is tentatively set for October 21 at the Mary Winspear Centre.

Organized by the Save Our Sid-ney group, the forum will be cen-tred around a discussion paper being formulated by the group (SOS). Spokesperson Richard Talbot says the discus-sion points were being finalized this week and will focus on some of the issues seen by its members as important in this election period. The SOS has a variety of concerns and have been vocal in their oppo-sition to the current town council, especially when it comes to sup-porting downtown busi-ness. They describe themselves as council watchdogs, a role that Talbot said will continue after the fall election.

Talbot said they represent a variety of interests and its mem-bers are not supporting any par-ticular mayoral candidate. Can-didate Steve Duck was involved in the early formation of SOS this year, when Talbot led discussions on the threats to Sidney’s retail economy. Duck, a local business-man, has since distanced himself

from the SOS and has withdrawn as a member of the advisory group. Talbot said he hopes Duck isn’t seen as the SOS’ candidate — especially since its members are in a variety of camps.

“Duck represents change, yes, but it’s not an overall SOS position to support only him.”

All of the announced mayoral candidates, Duck, Don Amos and Steve Price, will be invited to speak to the discussion points during

the first 10 minutes of the forum. Talbot said the floor would then be opened up to SOS mem-bers and their ques-tions, followed by the general public. Talbot added the forum is only tentative at this time, allowing for the nomi-nation period to end on Oct. 10. He said SOS had considered hosting an all candidates forum,

but with an estimated 12-plus peo-ple running in Sidney, he said no one would have sufficient time to speak.

“We need to know where the candidates stand,” Talbot said. “I don’t think many people know what any of them stand for yet.”

That said, Talbot added he real-izes candidates have until Oct. 10 to declare their intent to run and often the campaign doesn’t ramp up until then. He added he hopes his group and others will get to

hear more from all of the candi-dates to help them decide who to support.

The SOS mayoral candidates forum is scheduled to be held in the Charlie White Theatre at the Mary Winspear Centre on Oct. 21, pending the attendance of all of

the mayoral candidates. All candidates on the Saanich

Peninsula will have an opportu-nity to be heard at a series of pub-lic forums hosted by the Saanich Peninsula Chamber of Commerce in advance of the Nov. 15 election. Watch the PNR for details.

The Save Our Sidney (SOS) group is debating their discussion paper — or council expectation list — which they plan to give to Sidney’s mayoral candidates in advance of their October forum.

A draft list, emailed to all SOS members, includes directives that Sidney Town council:

• be less secretive by reducing in-camera meet-ings and encouraging more open debate at meetings;

• take greater responsi-bility in setting policy and directing staff;

• commit to more con-sultation on large financial commitments and develop-ment proposals;

• ensure OCP and long-term local area plans and visions be adhered to;

• support the SOS’s 10 recommendations for down-town revitalization;

• conclude issues at Sea-port Place, and;

• complete a traffic study on returning Beacon Avenue to two-way traffic.

SOS spokesperson Rich-ard Talbot says the final dis-cussion paper will be com-pleted this week and made public. It will be sent to all current mayoral candidates and any others who declare for the race by the Oct.10 deadline.

“SOS is a group looking for change,” Talbot said, “especially for changing this council completely.”

That said, Talbot added with an estimated 12-plus people run-ning and a guaranteed change in mayor, change will happen.

After losing in court and and before the B.C. Utili-ties Commission, a citizens’ group opposed to wireless electrical meters has been

denied a hearing before the B.C. Human Rights Tribunal.

The complaint was brought by a group called Citizens for Safe Technol-ogy Society (CSTS), which argued that “electrohyper-sensitivity” (EHS) is a dis-

ability.“I have concluded that

there is no reasonable pros-pect that the complainants will be able to establish that the electromagnetic frequency (EMF) exposure resulting from smart meters

results in adverse health consequences,” wrote tri-bunal member Norman Tre-rise in the decision not to hold a full hearing.

CSTS submitted that they don’t have to prove this sen-sitivity exists, because the

human rights tribunal has accepted “subjective self-reporting of symptoms” in a previous human rights case involving a Lower Mainland bus driver.

CSTS also cited a Prince Edward Island Court of

Appeal decision that stated “a person may be ill even though there is little or no objective evidence to prove it.”

B.C. Hydro said a series of doctors’ notes supplied by the com-plainants don’t prove the condition is real, because they appear to be based “entirely on the self-diagnosis of the individual complain-ants.” They argued that the exposure from peri-odic wireless meter sig-

nals to send electricity consumption data to collection stations is similar to exposure to radio station signals.

B.C. Hydro said the Human Rights Tribunal doesn’t have jurisdic-tion over the wireless grid project, and the B.C. Utilities Commis-sion does. The B.C. government’s 2010 Clean Energy Act man-

dated the wireless grid upgrade, and exempted it from review by the BCUC.

But in 2013 the BCUC reviewed the wireless grid project by For-tisBC in the Okanagan and Kootenay region, and rejected CSTS sub-missions that the tech-nology was a health hazard.

Hydro’s offer to relo-cate the wireless meter to another part of the property was not suffi-cient relief, and charg-ing meter reading fees to those who want to keep their mechanical meter or have a digital meter with the wireless transmission turned off is discrimination against people with a disability.

It’s time once again to recog-nize the year in business excel-lence on the Saanich Peninsula.

The eighth annual Crystal Awards, presented by the Saa-nich Peninsula Chamber of Commerce, are set for Oct. 23 at Butchart Gardens. Denny Warner, the Chamber’s execu-tive director, says it’s an event that recognizes the innovation and excellence of local business. There are 12 categories in which businesses of every stripe com-pete — all they require is a nomi-nation.

The nomination period is open, Warner said, and this year she is encouraging the busi-nesses themselves to speak up about their accomplishments this past year.

“This year, I have put out a request for businesses to nomi-nate themselves,” Warner said. “After all, no one else knows their business and what they have done like they do.”

The judging process, she noted, does not look at who does the nominating, only that the business has been nomi-nated. From there, the panel works to pick the winner in each

category.“If a business has done some-

thing really amazing, I’m sure they’d want people to know about it.”

Nomination forms can be obtained through the Chamber office on Beacon Avenue in Sid-ney or by calling them at 250-656-3616.

Tickets for the gala evening will be put on sale soon — watch for those through the cham-ber office and board members.

Warner added a guest speaker has been lined up but they are waiting for official confirmation before announcing who it is.

As well, this year’s Chamber Lifetime Achievement Award has been determined — Terry Stewart, formerly of the Victoria Airport Authority. Warner said the evening will be a chance to celebrate Stewart’s accomplish-ments among friends.

Local author and historian Valerie Green likes to create a cohesive theme each time she hosts the annual Saanich Heri-tage Bus Tour and Tea.

This year, as the near sold-out bus is readied for another jaunt around Saanich, Green is proving she’s put together another appealing package for new and returning heritage buffs.

“I thought about how many authors in the past and pres-ent have lived in Saanich, so we created a literary theme and we’re going to include the homes of people like Bruce Hutchison, Nellie McClung and children’s author and illustrator Helen Stewart,” Green said.

Green couldn’t explain why Saanich continues to be a magnet for literary profession-als, but the legacy left by the likes of McClung and others in their retirement years leaves plenty of inspiration for aspir-ing writers.

McClung’s most famous work is a 1936 collection of

short stories, Leaves from Lantern Lane, based on her own home on Ferndale Road in Gordon Head, Green said.

“Nellie had a long lane lead-ing to her house, which we will be walking down towards the house on our tour,” she said. “Nellie always used to hang a lantern at the end of

that lane.”Stewart’s 1912 home at Ten

Mile Point includes a visit to her in-house printing press, which occupies an old ball-room built originally for the original occupant’s daughter to entertaining her guests.

“It’s just an enormous ball-room,” Green said. “The house

has a fascinating history, but I don’t want to give away too much.”

Saanich archivist Caroline Duncan said the tour has remained popular since its inception 27 years ago. The afternoon tea also facilities a memorable social event, par-ticularly for seniors.

“We do tend to get older adults but everybody is wel-come,” Duncan said. “The tour is really great for people who no longer drive. We’re seeing Saanich neighbourhoods and heritage houses that people might not be able to get out and see on their own any-more, and it’s a very sociable event.”

Tickets to the event are $30. Bus tour participants will be picked up at Saanich Com-monwealth Place at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday (Sept. 28). The coach returns to the same location at 4:30 p.m. follow-ing afternoon tea at St. Aiden’s United Church. The author of a study that estimates rising ferry fares have seriously damaged the provincial economy is standing by his con-clusions in the face of sharp criticism from Transportation Minis-ter Todd Stone.

Peter Larose pro-jected 31 million more passengers would have taken B.C. Ferries over the last 10 years had the province kept fare hikes to the rate of inflation. He pegged the losses at $2.3 billion in economic activity and $610 million in taxes to various levels of gov-ernment.

“I have extreme con-fidence in the results,” Larose said, adding they are more likely an underestimate.

He spoke to a policy session at the Union of B.C. Municipalities convention in Whistler Tuesday after Stone issued a letter and took to the airwaves to con-demn the UBCM-spon-

sored study.“It is unfortunate that

the analysis speculates on what might have been, rather than pro-viding any concrete solutions on how to take the coastal ferry system into the future in a cost effective and sustainable way,” Stone said in a Sept. 19 letter to UBCM’s president.

The minister said the study failed to properly consider various fac-tors, from the effects of the 2008-09 global recession to rising fuel prices and demo-graphic changes.

He said it was “irre-sponsible” and “unpro-ductive” for the UBCM to release the “unsub-stantiated and sensa-tional” estimates.

Stone’s letter said the analysis was flawed because it assumed all the money not spent due to reduced ferry travel went out of the province, instead of being spent in B.C. in other ways.

Larose sought to reassure UBCM del-egates that his pro-

jection is correct and doesn’t mean the economic damage in coastal B.C. is being offset by gains in other parts of the province.

But Tofino Council-lor Ray Thorogood questioned that logic, arguing Lower Main-land residents deterred

from a trip to Vancou-ver Island by high fares might instead head east to the Okanagan.

“We’re not saying this is the be all and end all of all analysis,” said Campbell River Coun. Claire Moglove, who sits on the UBCM committee that com-

missioned the work.She said the aim is

to do further work and engage the province in a real dialogue on stem-ming the decline in B.C. Ferries ridership.

“What we want from the provincial govern-ment is to sit down and start talking about solu-

tions.”Moglove added that

the UBCM decided to probe the impact of high fares because the province wouldn’t.

Current rate caps allow for maximum increases of four per cent this year and 3.9 per cent in 2015.

A recent PNR article about Vic-toria Cross winner George Pearkes did not mention that he joined the Canadian army in Victoria as a pri-vate in March 1915. Also during the 1950s, he was made a honorary col-onel in the Canadian Scottish Regi-ment (Princess Mary’s) — Vancou-ver Island’s own infantry regiment.

during world War One, the Cana-dian Scottish has four VC winners: Col. Cyrus Peck, Cpl. William Met-calf, Pr. William Johnstone and Piper James Richardson. Soldiers from the unit also earned 283 military honours of various description. They also suffered 5,491 casualties, of which 1,412 were fatal.

After the war, Col. Cy Peck was MLA for Saanich and the Islands from 1924 to 1928. He died in Sidney in 1856.

Sir Arthur Currie, Canada’s first general, is also a local boy. He came to Victoria from Ontario in 1894. He taught school in Sidney and Vic-toria, later going into private busi-ness in Victoria. In 1895, he joined the militia in the city as a gunner. By 1913 he was a Lt. Colonel and in 1914, Currie was in charge of Cana-dian training for overseas service. In 1915, Currie was promoted to Brigadier General. He was Knighted in 1917, promoted to Lt. General in command of the 100,000-man Cana-dian Corps, to war’s end in 1919. In 1919, Currie was made a full General — Canada’s first. He left the army in 1920 and died in 1933.

The Canadian Scottish Regiment Museum is located in the Bay Street Armoury in Victoria and is open

to the public. The museum relies mainly on public support and pri-vate donations.

Feds need to take action on climate change

Estimates are that between two and three hundred thousand walked in the People’s Climate March in New York City last Saturday.

During this new Parliamentary session, we can urge federal party leaders and Conservative cabinet ministers to take powerful action on climate change. This would be an effective follow-up to the huge NYC march.

Canadians of all socio-economic and political stripes are counting on leaders to act. We can all help build a chorus so loud that they can’t help but hear.

Town needs to clean up For whatever reason, Mayor

Larry Cross and the current Sidney town council do not believe they should take any action to require SWP to clean-up the buildings and lands at Seaport East.

The Town owns those lands and leases them to SWP. The lease states SWP is required to “…operate, manage and maintain the buildings … in accordance with the highest and best standards of similar developments in the Town of Sidney.”

There are three buildings on the lands in need of at least a clean-up and coat of paint. A small group, including myself, brought this to the Town’s attention in February and were assured the Town would take action. No one was forthcoming, so I wrote a letter in April. In June, the Town’s Ports and Waterfront Infrastructure Committee advised me everything was fine.

I received a letter from the mayor dated Sept. 11. It said SWP is seeking a new tenant for the ex-Mineral World building, and therefore won’t be undertaking any painting, etc. until a new tenant is secured. I just wonder how many more years the Town thinks we should wait before enforcing the lease. Thank goodness we have an election shortly. I look forward to significant change.

Province of B.C. is facing many growth challengesStatistics Canada’s latest population

projections do not bode well for B.C.’s future, on a number of counts.

The federal agency has B.C. falling to fourth-largest province in the country, with Alberta moving ahead of it to third. This is projected to happen over the next 20 years or so.

B.C. will still be growing — but at a lesser rate than Alberta is projected to grow. Perhaps more dramatically though, B.C.’s population of seniors is expected to grow the most, to 27 per

cent of the population by 2038. This is a higher-than-usual percentage of seniors, who for the most part will not be working and contributing to

long-term economic growth. At the same time, they will put added pressure on the health care system.

This is not to say that seniors are bad for a province or an economy. It is simply that their needs bring new challenges to an economy which is already hobbled by minimal growth, and to a province where every resource-based proposal is met with a fury of opposition.

A province cannot thrive long-term without economic growth. Simple population growth is not enough.

B.C. is already a very expensive place to live. At the same time, few younger people have the opportunity to make really good incomes, and are thus handicapped from getting ahead.

Taxes in B.C. are already quite high, which is masked by the sleight-of-hand about low income tax rates.

However, when the seven per cent PST, ICBC rates, ferry fares, BC Hydro rates (all of which are tax increases), TransLink taxes and MSP premiums are taken into account, taxes are quite onerous on many people already.

Low economic growth will inevitably lead to even higher taxes.

Two Saanich Pen-insula residents were honoured with the Min-ister of Veterans Affairs Commendation this month for their con-tributions to Canada’s veterans.

Julian Fantino, Minis-ter of Veterans Affairs presented Peter God-win Chance from Sid-ney and Sharle Edward Widenmaier from Saa-nichton with the Com-mendations on Sept. 12.

The Commendation is awarded to individu-als who have contrib-uted to the care and well-being of veterans or to the remembrance of the contributions, sacrifices and achieve-ments of veterans.

“It is a privilege to recognize the selfless

efforts of these dedi-cated individuals who have generously given of their time and energy to support and care for our veterans,” said Fan-tino.

“Their exemplary contributions are indic-ative of the enormous respect and gratitude shared by all Canadians for the men and women who have served in uni-

form.”The Minister of Vet-

erans Affairs Commen-dation was created in

2001 by warrant of the Governor General and with the approval of Queen Elizabeth II.

The Commendation is intended primar-ily for veterans, but is sometimes be awarded to non-veterans in rec-ognition of their service to the veterans commu-nity.

To date, 137 Brit-ish Columbians have received the Minister of Veterans Affairs Com-mendation.

In general terms, the purpose of Amendment Bylaw No. 1371 (2014) is a zoning de�nition text amendment to add the de�nition of Agri-tourism, Farm Camping, Commercial Kitchens, and to amend the de�nition of Farm Use by striking “subject to the same restrictions as agri-tourism accommodation” and replacing it with “and is not to exceed an accumulative maximum �oor area of 400 m²”.

In general terms, the purpose of Bylaw No. 1373 (2014) is to rezone subject property Parcel A of Lot 87, Section 2, Range 3 East, North Saanich District Plan #1741 (8720 Ebor Terrace), from R-2 (Single Family Residential 2) to R-1 (Single Family Residential 1) to permit a subdivision of two lots, as shown in the cross hatched portion of Figure 2

� e year 2015 will mark the 30th anniversary of the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation. It seems � tting to celebrate that landmark, but it is more important to celebrate the � nancial high water marks that the Foundation has achieved. Our current sta team came together in the year 2000, and since then they have recorded revenues of more than $30 million. In the last � scal year alone, Foundation revenues surpassed $4.6 million.

Board and sta alike work to ensure that every dollar counts, so I am pleased to tell you that, last � scal year, our total expenses accounted for less than 9% of revenues. What we have done with those funds? Here are some highlights:

Construction for the Trevor Deeley Post-Anaesthetic Recovery Room is both on time and on budget. � ese renovations in the old operating rooms will create a modern, comfortable pre- and post-operative areas and an endoscopy suite.

In Acute Care, new beds, pressure-reducing mattresses and wall-mounted blood pressure monitors have been purchased.

� anks to support from the Sidney Rotary Club, our Palliative Care Lounge was provided with comfortable new furniture.

� anks to Sidney Shoppers’ Drug Mart “Tree of Life” programme, new laparoscopic equipment was purchased for less-invasive gynecological procedures that reduce hospital stays and recovery time.

Our new CT Scanner will be purchased very soon and should be on-site by early 2015.

We’re proud of these amazing achievements and hope you are too. After all, it’s our hospital.

It was an unusually cold morning, but the event at Saanich Peninsula Hospital’s Extended Care Unit (ECU) was anything but cold. The Activation Kitchen hosted its monthly Country Style Breakfast for eight residents, along with two invited guests. The aroma of grilling bacon wafted through the hallways.

Lisa and Marshall, part of the Activation Team in ECU, coordinated the fare of bacon, sausage, crustless quiche, hash browns, juice and coffee. They took individual orders and served as if hosting a breakfast in their own homes. It was a special occasion, full of cheerful banter. One resident mentioned Marshall driving him and others to the Intergenerational Program at Kelset Elementary for a six-week program. Eight residents are paired with students as learning buddies. Dorothy told the group that she enjoys it very much; she was a teacher during the 40s.

News from the Saanich Peninsula Hospital FoundationThe Sidney Rotary Club donated to purchase chairs for the Palliative Care Unit. To go with the chairs, a donation from RBC Foundation was used to purchase tables. These two donations have renewed the lounge in Palliative Care.

The Activation Kitchen was enlarged and reorganized, with the help of donors to the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation. Anne, Recreation Therapist for the Activation Team, explained that they use the department’s food and entertainment budget for the Country Breakfast but are grateful to Foundation donors for bigger projects(like the Activation Kitchen renovation) and events (such as the ever-popular Elvis impersonator).

Anne confirmed what I saw. “Foundation donors help us in so many ways. It’s tremendous.”

The Tree of Life campaign from Shoppers Drug Mart in Sidney contributed $2,964.00 to Women’s Health initiatives at SPH. A new 30-degree laparoscope was purchased for Dr. Casciola, our gynecologist.

On August 9th & 10th the Victoria Radio-Controlled Air Modelers Society presented their annual “Victoria’s Largest Little Airshow”. After, a donation was made to SPHF for $12,000.

On August 17th, the Vancouver Island Motor Gathering was presented by German Auto Import Network at the Viscount Aero Centre in Sidney. This event was not only a highlight of the summer but also brought the Foundation over $30,000.00 closer to a new CT Scanner!

Journey to a sparkling luxury Okanagan resortThe Dodge Journey is a versatile crossover vehicle that easily trans-forms from a weekday workhorse to a luxury weekend-getaway vehicle.In recent years, yours truly has had the opportunity to put suc-ceeding models of the seven-seat-er through the daily paces around Metro Vancouver, hauling human cargo and on one occasion toting many boxes while helping one of my kids move home!I now see that four lucky readers put a Dodge Journey’s week-end-getaway abilities to the test, during a stay at the luxurious Sparkling Hill Resort, which is nes-tled in the mountains near Vernon (see contest details on this page).The accommodation, which is truly a health and wellness destination, will certainly not disappoint. I stayed there recently while attending a new car launch. The facilities at Sparkling Hill’s KurSpa are incredible, offering more than 100 different spa treatments.The 40,000 square-foot European-inspired spa is the largest spa in Canada, featuring seven

aromatherapy, steam and sauna rooms, hot pool, outdoor infinity pool and an indoor salt-water serenity pool with underwater music and Swarovski crystal night sky! The adventurous among the foursome should brave North America’s first European Cy-rotherapy Cold Sauna. There will be a moment during the sub-zero temperature stage when one’s sanity will be questioned but the afterglow will be worth it!Anyway, I’m the car guy not health advisor so here are some tips on how and where to get the most out of the Journey for the weekend. I’ve done quite a bit of wine research in the area so we’ll start there…a designated driver will be required!One of my nearby favourites is

Arrowleaf Cellars, a family operated winery located nearby at 1574 Camp Road, in Lake Country. It specializes in cool-climate wines and I recommend the Bacchus (arrowleafcellars.com). Next door is the Ex Nihilo Winery, which has an awesome building and a very crisp Ries-

ling (exnihilovineyards.com). A few minutes’ drive along Camp Road brings you to the Gray Monk Estate Winery and ideal lunch spot. Many photo opps along the way and still more from the vantage point of the deck, which overlooks lush vineyards stretching down to Okanagan Lake. The Meadery at Planet Bee, 5011 Bella Vista Road, Vernon, is an intriguing spot. There they make “Honeymoon Mead”, an ancient drink made from fermented honey and water and dubbed the Beverage of Love” (planetbee.com).Downtown Vernon has transformed large 27 blank walls into colourful artists’ canvases depicting Vernon’s rich heritage. They can be viewed either with a guide or you can pick up a self-guided tour booklet. Just a few man-made spots. The northern and central Okanagan’s natural beauty is evident at every turn of the wheel but I would highly recommend a stop above Kalamalka Lake to look down the Coldstream valley. You know, you don’t need to win this prize to enjoy this beautiful area. We’ll carry a review of the Sparkling Hills week-end and drive aboard the Journey in a future edition of Driveway.

Volkswagen has had an impressive ride here during the past few years, gaining market share and selling record numbers of cars – its best-selling car being the Jetta. When the last VW Jetta was introduced in 2011, it repre-sented a major shift in the company’s sales philosophy. The decision was to make a larger sedan, yet drop the price to compete right in the heart of Canada’s compact segment, our largest sales category. With a starting price under $15,000 the Jetta is the biggest car in the compact class, offering a gateway into owning a German car, yet having the space and comfort North Americans expect. For 2015 VW continues with the same philosophy but ups the ante to include new engines, styling and interior amenities.

LooksIt would be easy to overlook the substantial updates to this new Jetta because the exterior tweaks are so subtle they need pointing out. The front grille, bumper and headlamps have all been replaced to include a bigger air opening and LED marker lights, plus xenon headlights are available. The back also receives a minor update that includes a new bumper, trunk and tail lamps. With a starting price of $14,990, the Trendline comes with hubcaps on 15-inch wheels. The midlevel $20,090 Comfortline can be equipped with 16-inch alloy wheels and the $25,490 Highline is fitted with 17-inch alloys. Then there are the TDI diesel versions that range from $22,490 to $27,790. Volkswagen has a wide range of prices, equipment and engine choices to suit. The most popular is the Trendline Plus at $17,190 that includes the must have…heated front seats!

InsideWhat isn’t obvious on first inspection is just how far the Jetta interior has come unless you know the previous mod-el. It was a practical car but hardly luxurious or even sporty – spartan might be a good word. That has all changed with the new 2015 model thanks to new switches and dials that look and feel first rate. The upper dash on all but the base

Trendline is now fitted with soft-touch materials and the base model even comes with a 6.5-inch touchscreen that also doubles as a backup camera. Bluetooth is optional on the Trendline plus but becomes standard on Comfort-line and above. The top highline features leather, a bigger 8-inch screen and push button start. What all Jetta’s come standard with is a huge back seat, massive trunk and plenty of room side-to-side. This really is a mid-size car that starts at a compact car price.

DriveThe drive event for the all-new Jetta was held in Middle-burg Virginia, which I later discovered is in the wealthiest county in the United States. Huge homes on rolling farms, with stone fences and colonial designs reminds visitors that this is historic country; Middleburg witnesses action during the Gettysburg campaign of the American Civil War. The Salamander Resort was the backdrop for the intro-duction, an equestrian themed luxury resort that would make any new car look good. Surrounding it are rolling hills and winding roads, a perfect place to exercise the new suspension and engines in the Jetta. The previous car was recently updated to a full independent suspension and that carries over, as do disc brakes on all four wheels. The big news is a new 1.8L direct injection, turbocharged 4-cylinder with 170hp but an impressive 185 lb.-ft of torque. Speaking of torque, the new TDI diesel engine pumps out a whopping

VerdictAfter driving both the new engines back to back I’d be hard pressed to choose. I love the torque of the diesel and the impressive efficiency. (It is rated at just 6.7L/100km in the city and 4.7L on the highway.) But the new turbo gasoline engine is a more spirited unit that provides a more enthusi-astic experience. This engine delivers 8.1L/100km in the city and 5.6L on the highway. If I drove a lot, the diesel would be the way to go, but for more, fun the new 1.8L is impres-sive. Still in the mix is the old 2.0L 4-cylinder with 115hp offered in all Trendline and Comfortline models. This engine has been around since Moses was a boy, but it is a proven engine and offers a great starting price.At first glance the 2015 Jetta looks like a warmed over update but below the surface is substantial change. The Vauxhall ADAM S looks to be devilishly delicious little car. The 1.4-litre Turbo ECOTEC unit in the ADAM S delivers 50 per cent more power and 70 per cent more torque than its naturally-aspirated 1.4-litre combines with a six-speed manual gearbox, to propel it to 100 km/h in 8.5 seconds and produces a top speed of 200 km/h.Too bad that we will never see the General Motors UK product on our [email protected]

The Medusa-like temptation to fixate on upcoming veg-etation must be overcome. If you do happen to focus on them, it could be game over.“Oh, shoot, there’s a stum…” Thud. There goes the front end of your bike and probably you.If you look down, your handlebars might do a jig-like dance, and chances are, that’s where you end up. Down.Breathing through the anx-iety is one way of conquer-ing the trails. Another is a strong foundation in riding. But the most important of them all: vision.Before heading out onto the over 300 kilometres of trails nestled within the 11,000 acres of Ganaraska Forest, Trail Tours instructor Al gives my riding partner and I a lesson in a much less confining location.Thank goodness.Nestled in the heart of the seemingly limitless dirt biking and motorized vehicle playground is Trail Tours (www.trailtour.com.) It’s just over an hour’s drive east from Toronto and well worth the short-haul jour-ney. After parking the car and walking a few paces through a trail, the world gets a little brighter. Literal-ly and metaphorically.The sinewy trees – well, in comparison to west coast wood – that lead us to home base dotn’t let in a ton of light, so at the end of the trail, where Trail Tour’s open field training facility stands before me, the sun overflows like a perfect-ly-iced cake (you can never have too much icing.)Also, I’m going dirt biking. first rodeo in terms of dirt riding, it was in regards to single-track.I could use all the tips and tricks I could get.Furthermore, I could always use a little more practice riding in the sand. Yikes.Day 1 of the two-day adventure consisted of making sure the techniques for single-track riding were fresh in our minds. It’s best just to ignore the trees or whatever hazards

engulf you and the bike. Acknowledge them, but don’t stare. Otherwise, your fate will likely be sealed.After practicing in the various loops – there are different areas of their fa-cility that cater to different techniques – it was off to the practice trail.Needless to say, I was not setting any speed records but it wasn’t about speed. That comes with time and experience. It was getting used to the fact that I didn’t have a lot of wiggle room and that my mind would want to play tricks on me if I didn’t relax, let the bike and myself breathe, and enjoy the best that machine and Mother Nature have to offer.Day 2 was a game changer. I was so happy that I did some basic skills the day before because I embraced the various tones and textures of the perpetually evolving geography around me.Rocks, gravel, soil, sand (oh, there was a lot of sand), steep inclines, tree stumps, sharp corners, you name it, the Ganaraska Forest has it.Though I didn’t go at it alone. Groups were orga-nized by skill level and were lead by individuals who know that forest like the back of their hand. Heck, I would have been lost after the first two turns.If you found that through-out the day you wanted

a more advanced riding, or wanted to take it easier, movement between groups was entirely possible. The name of the game there is safety, with fun at an extremely close second.Challenging yourself, your mind, your body and the bike is all part of the package. Congregationalists at Peace Lutheran Church in Sidney will be celebrating the sweet sounds of two years of fund-raising efforts on Sun-day.

A new grand piano graces the local church and the hard work to bring it to the community will be the focus of a party on Sept. 28.

Ev Wiggins, who is publicity chair-person at Peace Lutheran, says it took the church two years to raise the money through picnics, a fowl supper and by the extra efforts of groups like the Sidney Concert Band, which held a fundraiser to help the cause.

“We’re so excited about it,” Wig-gins said. “It really was a community effort.”

The keys of a mock grand piano were also sold to help raise the money needed for a new, full-size instrument. It was one of the clever ways the congregation members came up with to keep the tally grow-

ing.Pastor Erik Trovall said the previ-

ous piano, which was donated to the church by a local family, is still work-ing fine and has been moved into the congregation hall. It is used for meet-ings and other events.

He added the church decided to look for a new piano during their reg-ular budget and needs assessment process. He said since music plays a big part in church life, they wanted an instrument worthy of that atten-tion. So, they found the piano they wanted from a Victoria company and began fundraising.

“We wanted something that was going to be beautiful,” he said.

The piano actually arrived a few weeks ago and has already been used during times of worship and for special occasions at the church.

“It was a labour of love,” Wiggins said about the many hours of vol-unteer time people put in to raise enough money for the new instru-ment.

All of their efforts culminate on Sunday, Sept. 28, 10:30 a.m. at the church at 2295 Weiler Ave. in Sidney. Guest musicians David Watson and Claire Mackelson will be performing classics throughout the service and luncheon.

VICTORIA — From more than seven mil-lion objects in the Royal B.C. Museum’s galler-ies, archival stacks and workrooms behind the scenes, curators, archi-vists and other expert staff have selected some of the most fas-cinating (and often seldom-seen) objects — what they are call-ing the 100 Objects of Interest.

This month, these

artifacts, specimens, archival records and works of art will be featured on the 100 Objects of Interest web-site, http://royalbcmu-seum.bc.ca/100/.

The website features a photo of each object and a brief description of its significance. The objects will rotate over time, as new items are uploaded to the site.

“Using technology to inspire and stimulate

international research into our collections will strengthen our knowl-edge of them and open up new opportunities for collaboration,” said Prof. Jack Lohman, CEO of the Royal BC Museum.

The shortlist of 100 was made subjectively, but each object speaks to the living landscapes and cultures of British Columbia.

Congregationalists at Peace Lutheran Church in Sidney will be celebrating the sweet sounds of two years of fund-raising efforts on Sun-day.

A new grand piano graces the local church and the hard work to bring it to the community will be the focus of a party on Sept. 28.

Ev Wiggins, who is publicity chair-person at Peace Lutheran, says it took the church two years to raise the money through picnics, a fowl supper and by the extra efforts of groups like the Sidney Concert Band, which held a fundraiser to help the cause.

“We’re so excited about it,” Wig-gins said. “It really was a community effort.”

The keys of a mock grand piano were also sold to help raise the money needed for a new, full-size instrument. It was one of the clever ways the congregation members came up with to keep the tally grow-

ing.Pastor Erik Trovall said the previ-

ous piano, which was donated to the church by a local family, is still work-ing fine and has been moved into the congregation hall. It is used for meet-ings and other events.

He added the church decided to look for a new piano during their reg-ular budget and needs assessment process. He said since music plays a big part in church life, they wanted an instrument worthy of that atten-tion. So, they found the piano they wanted from a Victoria company and began fundraising.

“We wanted something that was going to be beautiful,” he said.

The piano actually arrived a few weeks ago and has already been used during times of worship and for special occasions at the church.

“It was a labour of love,” Wiggins said about the many hours of vol-unteer time people put in to raise enough money for the new instru-ment.

All of their efforts culminate on Sunday, Sept. 28, 10:30 a.m. at the church at 2295 Weiler Ave. in Sidney. Guest musicians David Watson and Claire Mackelson will be performing classics throughout the service and luncheon.

Most inves-tors think of a Fixed Income

holding as either GICs or Bonds. Few realize that carefully-selected preferred shares can be a far superior form of fixed income, both from the perspective of not only generating a higher income stream (yield), but also on a much more tax-efficient basis.

Preferred shares are a hybrid; they are part equity, part debt. While they rank behind bonds on the credit spectrum, they rank ahead of com-mon stock — hence the name “preferred”.

A preferred share-holder has an owner-ship interest in the company issuing the shares; unlike a com-mon shareholder how-ever, he has no voting interest.

On the other hand, the preferred share, unlike the common share, offers a pre-spec-ified dividend yield —always higher than that of the same company’s common shares. The issuing corporation is obliged to discharge all of its dividend obli-gations to preferred shareholders before paying any dividends to common sharehold-ers — again emphasiz-ing the former’s “pre-

ferred” status.Aside from their

higher yield, preferred shares held in non-registered accounts are subject to a much lower tax rate on divi-dends than is the case with interest paid on bonds or GICs.

In British Columbia for example, an individ-ual in the highest mar-ginal tax rate will pay tax at a 45.8 per cent rate on interest income, while paying only 28.7 per cent on dividends received from listed Canadian corporations.

Even more dramati-cally, if the taxpayer falls below $44,000 in total annual income, any eligible dividends earned as part of that income will attract zero tax. At an income of $44,000, interest income, by contrast, would attract a tax rate of 29.7 per cent.

This combination of

higher yield and lower tax rates makes Cana-dian preferred shares a very attractive alterna-tive for investors, espe-cially in non-registered accounts.

As with all invest-ments, there is always reason for caution. Preferred shares held in only one or two cor-porations should not be considered as a prudent fixed-income investment, any more than would only one or two corporate bond holdings.

However, when a broad spectrum of pre-ferred shares is held (in perhaps one hun-dred or more individ-ual corporations), suf-ficient diversification is achieved for that hold-ing to be considered as fixed income.

About a dozen Cana-dian preferred share Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) meet this broad diversification test; they are offered primarily by i-Shares, and the Bank of Mon-treal.

As with bonds, pre-ferred share capital val-ues will fluctuate over the short term with rising or falling inter-est rates, but over the long term, they should provide a total annual return average superior to most GIC or bond options.

Similar to laddered bond ETFs, preferred share ETFs which offer one-to- five year lad-dering are available, providing longer-term participation in future interest rate increases.

Today’s Canadian preferred share ETFs offer dividend rates in the range of 4.25 per cent to 4.75 per cent.

Every investor hold-ing fixed income in his/her portfolio should consider including a broadly–diversified preferred share com-ponent, for at least the non-registered hold-ings.

Panorama Recreation’s Youth Hockey League instructors Lisa Lynam and Patrick Dibb are helping youngsters learn the skills of hockey — but most of all, to have fun playing the game.


There’s a new hockey league in town and its focus is on the fun of the game.

Panorama Recre-ation has launched the Youth Hockey League. For kids from age 6 to 12, the league will teach them the fundamentals of hockey — skating, passing, stick handling, shooting and more — with the emphasis on fun.

Instructor Patrick Dibbs, himself a former Junior B goaltender for the Columbia Valley Rockies of the KIJHL, says the focus is on young players as they start out in hockey. It’s an inexpensive way to see if the skater — and their parents — enjoy the sport.

“This is new this

year,” Dibbs said. “It’s for boys and girls and we have enough play-ers right now for two teams to play in scrim-mages and games.”

Dibbs is teaming up with fellow instructor Lisa Lynam in the pro-gram, which runs once

a week from now until Dec. 17 — Wednesday afternoons on the same ice where the Peninsula Panthers Junior B team plays. Both instructors still play hockey and are happy to pass on their knowledge and skills.

With the school year getting off to a slow start, Dibbs said they hope to get the word out to parents about the league. Signing up at any time is just fine, he said, and the cost of registration will be pro-rated based on when they signed up.

Dibbs said the league is a safe environment for new and inexperi-enced players. It’s a non-contact league, fol-lowing in the footsteps of similar programs on the ice in Oak Bay and Saanich.

“It’s a first step for families and kids, to see if they are going to like hockey,” Dibbs said, adding there are no try-outs and players must at least be able to skate the length of the ice.

Joanne Brodersen has seen the best and worst scenarios when it comes to moving. Among the worst are the people who have misjudged the weight and time of downsiz-ing, says the DFH realtor.

“I’ve worked with people who know they want to do it, but once they get into the process, they clearly haven’t realized what’s involved,” she said.

Dealing with sentimental items is physically taxing, she added.

“I’ve seen the emotional toll. Often these homes are places you’ve raised your family, where you’ve seen your kids grow up. Or it’s the home where the spouse was deceased and now it’s time to move on. The main thing is you don’t know what to keep and you don’t know how and where to get rid of a houseful of items.”

As a service, Brodersen has gathered a team of local professionals for an Oct. 4 informational session on downsizing. The session will be held at the Nellie McClung Library.

Estate lawyer Tejpaul Wirk from Mullin Demeo is a keynote speaker. He will be talking on issues gleaned from his experience on dealing with estates and a new estate law.

Ali Elznti and Julie Cookson from RBC will also be there, as well as Fabulous Home Staging, Acto-gether Moving Services, who specialize in moving seniors, landscaping and house cleaning services and more.

“It’s almost like an expo, there will be tables around the room and it’s not just geared to seniors, particularly. It’s for all ages, so adults can help their parents,” Brodersen said.

“The baby boomers are coming into this stage, a huge amount of people in the next five to 10 years. We’re living longer and some of us want to get the home cleaned up sooner to be prepared.

“Some people are keeping the house nearly turnkey ready.”

The group is hoping to do more presentations, maybe in the spring.

“Really, it’s for any one who wants to get the ball rolling,” Brodersen continued. “Some people might need to think about doing it years ahead of time, to help their parents so the parents can make the decisions before the decisions need to be made for them.”

The free event is at Nellie McClung Library, 3950 Cedar Hill Rd., on Oct. 4, from 1 to 3 p.m.

Tips for buyers, sellers

When selling your home, be kind and note where the shutoffs are for the water, and mark which paint cans are for which rooms, so the new owners can do touchups after they move in. Furniture and people will inevitably mark up the walls during the move-in process.

It’s also nice to leave the names of a couple neighbours, or the Block Watch captain, warran-ties and instruction manuals for appliances, and dated invoices for major renovations.

“I get them look at one item and ask, ‘do I love it and do I use it?’ If not, they should seri-ously consider donating it or selling it,” she says. “If they can’t answer right away that they love it, they usually don’t.”

She recommends starting with large items to maximize downsizing efforts and get you think-ing about whether your old furniture will fit in the new place.

Another area ripe for decluttering, she says, is storage lockers.

“I find that people are paying a lot of money for (outside) storage. People will often discover things they haven’t used in ages and may never use again.”

Wine connoisseurs and those curious about wine will be able to tour the world of wine right

in their own backyard. The first-ever Victoria Wine Fes-

tival, featuring an extensive selec-tion of international wines, will present tastings and seminars focused on enhancing wine enjoy-ment for everyone ranging from the wine novice to the avid enthu-siast.

Held at the Parkside Resort today and Saturday, the wine fes-tival will present more than 200 wines from around the world.

Wines have been selected by a board of sommeliers to appeal to a range of tastes and preferences, offering opportunities to taste new wines, learn about the art of wine-making and discover more about the flavours and aromas that make each wine unique.

“We have worked to create a dedicated wine festival that offers an array of international wines that consumers do not normally have the opportunity to taste here at home,” said David Bain, event manager and founder of the Victo-ria Wine Festival.

“We are enthusiastic about building the knowledge of the

average wine consumer, unveil-ing new wines and showcasing beloved standard wineries to vet-eran consumers.”

Tastings are still available from 3:30 to 6 p.m., while the 7 p.m. task-ing is sold out. Saturday events are

also still available.Seminars about wine and wine-

making will be held between the tastings.

Tickets include wine samples, palate cleansing tapas and coffee. Guests will also enjoy live classical music during the event.

“It is important to us that most of the wines at the festival repre-sent what the majority of people are buying most of the time,” said Bain.

“It’s wonderful to taste very expensive bottles of wine and experience exclusive vintages, and we have those at the festival.

“It is more important to us to

broaden people’s experience and hopefully inspire them to try something different the next time they are shopping for a bottle.”

Festival participants will be able to purchase some of the vintages at an onsite liquor store set up exclusively for the event.

Tickets to some events are still available. Parkside Resort is also offering wine festival weekend packages.

If you’ve made it this far from today’s front page, then you’ll have to forgive us for all of the bear puns.

It’s infectious, you see.A small group of volunteers joined Sidney

Museum executive director Peter Garnham on Wednesday morning to brainstorm ideas for displays during the annual Teddy Bear Exhibit, which comes up in November. This year’s exhibit theme is fairy tales and we’ll only drop one hint: you should be able to see Jack and the Bear-stock on display.

There were plenty of laughs, as well as bear-related jokes, as the group of volun-teers made their list and ensured each item had someone working to make it come together. It certainly won’t be easy to come up with a beanstalk made of bears.

If anyone can do it, however, it surely must be this group. Garnham says the Museum has 59 active volunteers and a recent appeal for new ones attracted three people to the fold. Dyan is one of the newcomers this year. She says she recently moved to Sidney and, with a background in anthropology, thought the Museum and Archives was a great place to start volunteering in her new community.

“I think this is just great,” she said. “I look forward to it.”

Garnham added many of their volunteers are retirees and came to the fold looking for an outlet, a way to share their interests. Often, they will be volunteering with other

organizations, like sisters Barbara and Elea-nore. When they aren’t finishing each oth-ers’ sentences, they are volunteering at the Museum, B.C. Aviation Museum and in many other parts of the Saanich Peninsula. Today, however, they were looking forward to talk-ing about Teddy Bears.

“I applied to be a volunteer in 2005,” said Eleanore. “I has been a legal secretary and somebody thought I was organized.”

The pair handle a lot of the Museum’s col-lections.

“It keeps us out of mischief,” Barbara added.

Volunteering in one’s community is impor-tant, they all agree. Eleanore added that without volunteers, many programs — even the Museum itself — would not run.

“If we all had to pay for it, a lot of things wouldn’t be around,” she said.

It’s this pool of dedicated volunteers that make things happen. Take Pam, one of the Museum volunteers who started in 2003. She is a weaver as well and imagine the delight and surprise of the crew when they found out she has a Teddy Bear collection — 150 of them.

“Don’t make eye contact with the bears,” Pam said. “You’ll have to take them home.”

“We always need another bear,” joked Joyce, a volunteer who has been with the Museum since it was located on the water-front in Sidney.

Volunteering connects them to their com-munity and the Teddy Bear group can’t wait to get going on the new displays.
