“If we approve this tonight, then it is something we can do.”So said North Saanich Councillor Dunstan Browne. On Monday night, in a 4-3 vote, council approved the subdivision

of a property on Bourne Terrace. The owners applied to split the lot into two pieces. The second lot would either be sold or used to build a second house.

The owners had been turned down for the same subdivision request in 2006 and district staff were again recommending against

council approving it this time.Citing the municipality’s own strategic plan,

staff reported the proposed change would not be in line with the neighbourhood’s form and character. Nor would the lot meet minimum size requirements for a second single family home.

Browne, in reviewing images of the area, said it looked to him to be an abandoned piece of property.

“If you just get a good house on there,” he said, “it would compliment the neighbourhood. In all my time on council, I’ve never seen a bet-ter example of where common sense should prevail.”

Coun. Elsie McMurphy said the state of some-one’s property should not be used as a reason to violate the district’s own zoning bylaws.

“I don’t think we should zone by eyesore,” she said.

Coun. Celia Stock added creating a small lot size in that area opens the door for more.

“We have (bylaws) and there’s a reason for them,” Stock said.

Mayor Alice Finall said the subdivision of lots into smaller parcels is an overall council direc-tion that should be addressed in a full review of North Saanich’s official community plan.

Browne added the district’s own advisory commission recom-mended the subdivision should take place. As well, a map showing the immediate area depicts similar-sized lots between Bourne Ter-race and Ebor Terrace that are split into two properties.

Browne and councillors Ted Daly, Craig Mearns and Conny McBride supported a draft site-specific zoning amendment in addition to a community amenity contribution of $16,000 from the applicant.

From Kitimat to Victoria, oppo-nents are preparing to fight the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline proposal, after it was given federal approval Tuesday.

A group of B.C. aboriginal com-munities issued a statement Tues-day vowing to go to court to protect their aboriginal title and rights on the land affected by the twin pipeline and tanker port for diluted bitumen on Douglas Channel.

Aboriginal opponents in the North Coast region include the Haida, Gitgaat, Heiltsuk and Haisla First Nations, as well as communities in the B.C. Interior.

Haisla Chief Councillor Ellis Ross,

whose community is at the end of Douglas Channel and who is involved in a natural gas export project, said it is too late for more consultations.

“Every mistake they’ve made we

actually pointed out to them and said ‘this is not following our case law principles, you’re making a mistake’,” Ross said Tuesday. “But they went ahead and did it. It is going to be court.”

Northern Gateway project leader Janet Holder said she will continue to work to build on the 26 equity agree-ments the company has reached with aboriginal communities along the proposed pipeline route.

Kitimat Mayor Joanne Monaghan said her council has made its opposi-tion clear, after an April community vote that came down opposed to the project.

“I think most of the councillors are of the opinion that they really don’t want to see bitumen going down the channel,” Monaghan said. “They

would rather have it refined and have a product that’s refined going down the channel.”

B.C. NDP leader John Horgan said he wants resource development that creates jobs in B.C., particularly for aboriginal communities. Horgan said the B.C. Liberal government gave up its opportunity to oppose Northern Gateway.

B.C. Environment Minister Mary Polak rejected that claim, saying the province gave a clear “no” in its final submission to the federal review panel. Discussions with Alberta, Enbridge and oil producers continue to see if B.C.’s conditions for land and ocean protection as well as a “fair share” of benefits for B.C. can be met, Polak said.

NORTH SAANICH — Spectators and fans of vintage air-craft got a treat Tuesday as they witnessed the second day of flight by a restored deHavilland Mosquito.

Victoria Air Maintenance has restored the Second World War-era plan to flying status for a private owner. The com-pany’s website shows the various stages of the work — but it was this week’s test flights that had aviation buffs and even air force veterans out at the Victoria International Air-port to catch a glimpse of the Mosquito.

They weren’t disappointed as the pilots of the aircraft flew low and fast near the crowd on Canora Road during one of their passes of the airport’s runway. — Steven Heywood

Thanks to a resident raising a stink, North Saanich council is ask-ing its agriculture and parks commissions for advice on what to do about horse manure.

Martin Enright, who lives on John Road, wrote to the council ear-lier this month about his issue with horse manure piling up on the road and on a nearby trail. He attended the June 16 meeting to ask local politicians to give his concerns more con-sideration.

“I am concerned with only the one minute’s worth of discussion on the issue at your June 2 meeting,” Enright said. “We’re not trying to make trouble, just find a solution.”

He added while his family has no problem with horses or stables in the area, it’s the mess left behind he wants addressed.

Council was hard-pressed to come up with a solution on

Monday night. Coun-cillor Ted Daly said he understands the com-plaint but added he’s been overwhelmed in the past by people calling North Saanich a rural community “so get used to it.” He sug-gested having local riding clubs or stables find a way to deal with horse manure.

Coun. Dunstan Browne pointed to clean-up examples dur-ing parades, where a scooper follows the animals.

“Apart from doing

that,” he said, “I don’t know how you fix it.”

Coun. Craig Mearns suggested this sort of thing disappears fast.

“It’s a nuisance, sure, but not uncommon. It’s biodegradable.”

Mayor Alice Finall added asking owners to clean up the manure might be problematic in the difficulty in iden-tifying whose business it is.

Council discussed options and issues, including the benefits of manure in the garden. In the end, however,

they referred the mat-ter to their citizen-led commissions for their recommendations.

Sidney North Saan-ich RCMP has issued a second appeal for the public’s help in tracking down a missing teen from Sidney.

Mikayla Savage, 17, has not been seen by her family since May 19 and has not made contact with her family since May 22.

According to police, her absence is out of the ordinary. She was observed in the com-pany of pan handlers on the Saanich Penin-sula and may be in the company of a male with

a white Pitbull terrier, believed to be named Popeye.

Police have received indications of possible sightings ranging from Victoria to the Okana-gan. In a media release, the RCMP state Savage may also be traveling willingly with a com-panion and not in need of assistance.

“If this is the case,” said the RCMP, “the Sidney North Saanich RCMP would like to speak with Mikayla to confirm her safety.”

She is a Caucasian female, five feet tall and around 90 pounds with brown hair that

were, when last seen, in dreadlocks. She may also be in possession of a backpack and a gui-tar.

Anyone with informa-tion about Mikayla Sav-age’s current location is asked to call Consta-ble Kevin Shaw at 250-

656-3931 or their local police department.

YOUR VIEW

What a wonderful surprise to find ourselves walking around Sidney on a recent excursion to pick up a rela-tive at the airport.

A decade and a half later, we absolutely loved the makeover and especially the picturesque water-front walkway embellished with pro-voking statues.

Taking the Brentwood Bay ferry to the peninsula was akin to the commencement of a holiday. How-ever, I wish we had somehow been warned about the McTavish inter-change fiasco with its frenetic, fran-tic, uneasy access to the desired destination.

After returning home, a visitor here from Sidney commented how the McTavish travesty is dangerous and to be avoided.

So, basically after that experi-ence, we were delighted to find ourselves in familiar territory in the new, improved Sidney wishing we had more time to explore.

My only recommendation would be to have colourful banners/hang-ing baskets along Beacon Avenue to enhance the happy feelings of sum-mer. We shall return soon.

Gord and Nelly ByersParksville

Editor’s Note: Sidney has heard you, Gord and Nelly. The banners and flowers are up and in bloom.

Signs of the times I want to thank the Ministry of

Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI) for upgrading the wayfinding signage related to the Information Center on Beacon Avenue.

When the center on the highway closed, I understand the request started with the Saanich Peninsula Chamber of Commerce (who manage the center) and went to Destination Victoria who, in turn, placed the order with the MOTI. Staff changes in the MOTI delayed the project but we are happy to see the three new directional signs augmenting the existing information signage directing people into Sidney have been installed by Mainroad Contracting, the highway maintenance provider.

Furthermore, new signage for the Washington State Ferry Terminal has been ordered and should be installed before the end of June. Thanks to town staff for making recommendations and addressing this issue.

Finally, reports from some local business leaders indicate a 40 per cent increase in business this year over last year and are looking forward to a successful summer season.

Landfill more than a ‘dump’

Who knew going through the trash could be so fascinating?

It’s one thing to get your annual property tax bill, see the line for garbage collection, pay what you owe and forget about it until next year. But it’s an entirely different experience seeing exactly where your money goes by taking a tour of Hartland landfill.

This is where every piece of garbage that’s thrown in the trash in the Capital Region – and has been thrown in the trash for the last several decades – ends up.

But Hartland is not a dump. It used to be, back in the 1950s, a pit where you’d go and dump your trash. Now, this is an engineered, sanitary landfill.

This weekend’s Hartland Happening event at the landfill is a great opportunity for our region’s residents to not only get a lesson on what happens to our garbage, but to appreciate just how the Capital Regional District is managing to reduce the environmental impact of the landfill on our land, in our water and in the air we breathe.

That latter component of the landfill’s operations is quite impressive, and something we in Greater Victoria should be proud of. Not every landfill has procedures to prevent greenhouse gas emissions coming off the pile of garbage from entering the atmosphere, or screens that prevent rainwater from seeping through the soil and down deep into the rotting waste to become hazardous leachate.

It’s also slowly returning to its former state as a native forest, thanks to a reforestation plan that will eventually see the entire landfill become – on the surface – nothing more than thriving plants and animals.

With all the ongoing heating discussions surrounding the CRD’s future plans on managing and treating our liquid waste, it’s nice to see our solid waste is in really good hands.

After 18 years running the pop-ular Pier One Restaurant in Sid-ney, Kostas and Dafni Zobolas are ready to retire.

“It was really perfect timing,” explained Kostas, who said that the two had been thinking about retiring when an offer came in to take over the restaurant’s space.

“It’s wonderful because we will be able to go to Greece now for our daughter’s wedding,” he said, laughing that the couple pur-chased their plane tickets the day after they sold the restaurant.

The husband and wife team and their roster of close-knit staff have evidently touched the hearts of many people throughout their years in business.

“People who have heard about us retiring have come in and they hug me and they cry. Of course we have mixed feelings about leaving the business and all the amazing people we see every day but we’re staying in Sidney once we return from our vacation to Greece and we’ll stay in touch with everyone,” said Dafni.

Reflecting on their years of own-

ing the Greek restaurant, Dafni said the personal connection they held with their customers is what kept them going.

“These people become like fam-ily,” she explained.

“They come here into our res-taurant and we treat them like

family. There were people we would deliver special meals to, seniors we’d call to check in on if we didn’t see them for a few days, Kostas would even drive people home if a taxi was taking too long to come. This is a close knit com-munity,” Dafni said.

Father Costas Economas, the Priest at the Greek Orthodox Church in Royal Oak and a fam-ily friend of the Zobolas’ said the family can be described with one word.

“Philoxenia, which means the love of hosting or hospitality,

that really describes Kostas and Dafni. The two of them embody that word. They treat their cus-tomers like family, they treat their staff like family and that’s the most beautiful part is that they’ve made people feel that way,” said Econo-mas.

A letter penned to the two from their staff members attests to their compassion for those around them.

“Dafni and Kostas have worked so hard over the years to make Pier One a warm and loving place and their efforts have definitely paid off,” read the letter. “The evi-dence of this is in the smiling faces of the returning customers and the enthusiasm of all the staff.”

Through tears, Dafni says she will miss the business.

“We did more than just serve people here,” she said.

“We made connections with people. Our customers were here for us through thick and thin and we were there for them. We want to thank them all for the beautiful memories and years we shared.”

The last day of business for the restaurant will be Saturday, June 21. [email protected]

VICTORIA — B.C. Transit is exercising the con-cept of give and take for its summer bus schedule.

As of Monday, June 23, routes that service the University of Victoria, Camosun College and Royal Roads University will see slightly reduced sched-ules.

The seasonal adjustment is made to conserve transit hours during the less popular summer months to be able to maximize service hours dur-ing peak ridership when post-secondary schools are in session.

On the other hand, a new service to Thetis Lake is being introduced as part of the No. 53 Atkins Road bus route. The side trip, a suggestion from transit riders who responded to a public consulta-tion last fall, will run until Sept. 1.

For the summer season, service is also being increased on Routes 75 and 81 to accommodate extra passengers heading to Sidney, Brentwood Bay and Swartz Bay.

Also affecting the West Shore is a discontinua-tion of the No. 49 Langford Exchange bus due to low ridership. Service on that run has been picked up on other routes.

For more details on these and other service adjustments, pick up a Rider’s Guide on board any bus, visit bctransit.com/regions/vic or call the BusLine at 250-382-6161. — News staff

North Saanich farm to host annual agricultural fundraiserSteven HeywoodNews staff

Get ready to enjoy the excellent wine and produce grown on the Saanich Peninsula and southern Vancou-ver Island at the 17th annual Feast of Fields at North Saanich’s Kildara Farms.

Hosted by FarmFolk CityFolk, this is a fun-draiser for agricultural initiatives directed towards food security challenges.

Spokesperson Jen-nifer Freeman says the event travels to different Island farms every year and this time, they’ve selected Kildara Farms, a work-ing farm that will give visitors a picture of where local food comes from.

“Kildara Farms is a family-owned farm that lends itself to a wonderful Feast of Fields event,” she said.

“There’s a working farm with land, horses, pigs a new indoor event area and more.”

The farm, she contin-ued, is known for being the largest producer of organic baby salad

greens in the prov-ince, supplying gro-cery stores like Thrifty Foods.

Because Kildara is a working farm, there’s no direct parking on site. Instead, said Free-

man, people will be tak-ing buses and shuttles to and from the event. The Feast Bus will run

out of downtown Vic-toria at the southwest corner of Mayfair Mall. A free shuttle bus will also run from Meadow Oak Nursery.

Feast of Fields is a culinary event and fea-tures a variety of south-ern Vancouver Island and Saanich Peninsula restaurants, wineries, craft beer and more. Freeman said some businesses keep com-ing back to the event, while new ones join in every time.

Feast of Fields takes place September 14 and tickets are already on sale. They are avail-able now at Cook Cul-ture in downtown Vic-toria (1317 Blanshard St.) or the Meadow Oak Nursery in North Saa-nich (1070 Wain Rd.). Tickets are $95 per per-son. Add $10 to ride the Feast Bus.

Lobbing for food securityFarmFolk CityFolk uses donations from their annual fundraising

events for a variety of food security issues. One of their main efforts, says spokesperson Jennifer Freeman, is ensuring a secure supply of seeds. They have helped build the B.C. Seed Network, ensuring farmers have access to seeds that are not held by corporations. The Network also conducts research on such issues as finding high-yield seeds that grow well in various parts of the province.

The organization is also part of the lobby to protect B.C.’s agricul-tural land reserve and efforts to ensure farmland stays in the ALR.

Feast of Fields events are held on Vancouver Island, the lower mainland and Okanagan.

Five years into North American and world-wide Bull markets, Canada’s TSX is approaching new all-time

highs. U.S. markets passed their pre-2008 highs some months ago. So what is an investor to do when a market correction occurs?

After a lengthy bullish run, stock mar-kets always correct. No one can predict the timing of a correction — though many investors try to do so. What we do know, is that in the past sixty years North American markets have experi-enced 12 Bull markets and 12 Bear mar-kets. These terms are generally applied to market changes exceeding 15 per cent, and lasting at least six months.

Canada’s Bull markets over the past sixty years have had an average duration of 44 months, while delivering an average 120 per cent total gain in the TSX Index. The Bear markets on the other hand, have averaged only nine months’ duration, with an average value reduction of 26 per cent.

Clearly, the Canadian investor should take note of these instructive facts about how markets per-form and periodically adjust. It has been dem-onstrated investors who are well-invested and remain so during market downturns, dramatically outperform those who panic and sell holdings when markets fall.

Those investors who sell in declining markets are rarely successful in buying back near the mar-ket bottom when the inevitable market recovery occurs. Usually, they lose out compared to the stay-put investor who continues to collect regular dividends throughout the adjustment period.

The winning strategy of staying invested is particularly effective for those investors who are mainly in low-cost, highly-diversified, divi-dend-paying securities and with an appropriate

Fixed Income component in their port-folios. During a downturn, such port-folios should in fact decline less than the general market. During upswings, these portfolios should outperform the broader market.

A key point for investors to remem-ber: A loss is not incurred during a market correction, unless investments are actually sold. Although market val-ues will certainly show a reduction on paper, such reductions, as history has repeatedly proven, are much briefer and less severe than the increases resulting

from the also inevitable market upturns. As some pundits believe, North American mar-

kets may well continue to climb for some time. They cite low interest rates, solid corporate bal-ance sheets and earnings, declining unemploy-ment, and a growing gross domestic product. Oth-ers argue that with record high markets and their extended Bull run, we are overdue for a correction.

As a Harvard Business School professor recently concluded after studying a 10-year period of pre-dictions of 100 such prognosticators, the accu-racy of their predictions was about as reliable as that of a monkey throwing a dart at a predictive dartboard. If the “experts” cannot predict market moves, it’s even less likely that the average inves-tor can do so.

A market correction, when it occurs, is a nor-mal cyclical phenomenon, the timing of which is totally unpredictable. The best course of action, usually, is to take no action at all.

Safety Tip:As schools begin their summer break, there will be more children around the roads. Road safety is not always top of mind for kids, so make sure you pay extra attention, especially around

playgrounds where speed limits remain in effect year-round.

Question of the WeekFour-time F1 champ Sebastian Vettel got behind the wheel of a kart when he was just three-and-a-half years old and was racing at age eight. Should we encourage teens to follow that example, as a way of learning about vehicle speed and control before getting their first license at 16?

Hot laps with F1 World Champ Sebastian VettelBOWMANVILLE, Ontario. Four-time Formula One world champion Se-bastian Vettel has been driving since 1991 – 20 years less than yours truly. The Infiniti-Red Bull Racing Team lead man was only three-and-half years old when he took the wheel on a kart in his native Germany. He began racing four years later at the ripe old age of eight. He has a few years under his safety harness but he’s always up to learn from his elders.Last year, the 26-year-old wunderkind showed off his driving skills to me and buddy Brian Makse – a man also with racing pedigree – in an Infiniti FX50 Vettel Edition FX on the Paul Ricard Circuit in the south of France. We both figured his cornering needed work. Seb’s seat time with us clearly paid off as thereafter he won his fourth straight F1 championship. It came as no surprise then that he would jump at the opportunity to take the wheel again alongside me. Brian wasn’t available but I headed here to the Canadian Tire Motorsport in Ontar-io to work the magic again. The affable young guy has had a tough start to the F1 season, battling with the new hybrid technology.I put in some time first with retired F1 driver and now ace BBC TV F1

commentator David Coulthard on an auto cross track, laid out in the shape of the Infiniti logo. As I finished my turn at the wheel of the Infiniti Q50, the Scot sent me off to Seb with the words: “No cones were hurt in this filming . . . ”I’ll take that as a compliment for my error-free drive.Buckled up in anoth-er Q50S ($47,450), I wondered if Seb would demonstrate an improved cornering technique as we did a hot lap together around the reputedly fast 3.95-kilometre track. He

greeted me warmly, I thanked him for a hat he had kindly autographed, which I recently auctioned off. He was pleased to hear it had raised hundreds of dol-lars to help send local leukemia-strick-en teen Ryan Fagnan and his family on a last vacation, shortly before he died. We roared out of the pit lane through the first turn and continued to accel-erate downhill – close to 170 km/h – towards the second turn. Locals told me the stretch to the turn features a number of camber changes down to the second turn, scene of most of the track’s fatal crashes. Gulp.Obviously, nobody had cautioned him as he whipped the family sedan effortlessly round, talking about how he relaxed as we drove. Movies with happy endings apparently. Ah, the same conclusions he likes to F1 races.

“There haven’t been too many of those lately,” he joked, pressing harder on the metal, perhaps to make a point. As Infiniti Director of Performance, Vettel is truly playing a role in the development of future road products, rather than merely offering his name as a celebrity endorsement. He talked enthusiastically about the new com-pact, performance-oriented Q30, which should see the light late next year in Europe and a little later in Canada. The 328-horsepower 3.7-litre V6 Q50S we were riding in also benefitted from a little of his input. He’s clearly looking forward to Infiniti giving the go-ahead to the Q50 Eau Rouge concept, which features the Nissan GT-R’s growling 560-horsepower twin-turbo V6. Another corner loomed and I leaned into the door, as he barely slowed from the rapid pace we had zipped along the straight. “Your cornering has improved since last year,” I offered cheekily.

“Thank you, I think I’ve got the apexes about right,” he grinned. Hours earlier, it’s doubtful he had even heard of the tricky track, nevermind driven it. Harkening back to his references to happy endings, I reminded him that after driving with me last year he had enjoyed nothing but success.“That’s right . . . it’s all down to you,” he said with what I believed was a thoroughly genuine smile of appreci-ation.The end was nigh. Time flies when you are having fun: our hot lap and friendly chat took less than four minutes.Last Sunday, he enjoyed only his second podium finish of the year taking third place at the Montreal Grand Prix. You’re welcome, Seb. Same time next year, in the Eau Rouge?

Meaner, leaner Mustang The 2011 model year edition of the Ford Mustang, coupe and convertible, came with a more menacing frontal appearance and under the hood new engines produced more power with less fuel. So, you could also call it the “meaner and leaner” revamp.Appearance changes on the 2011 included new headlights and revised lower fascias, fenders and grille, plus a power-dome hood that allows ad-ditional air cooling to the Mustang’s new engines. At the back, new three-light LED lamps sequentially signal a turn, reminiscent of the muscle car years. The Mustang GT convertible models came with improved body rigidity with 12 per cent more lateral stiffness versus the previous year. In addition to newly strengthened structural mem-bers, under its hood you’ll also find a (race-style) tower-to-tower strut brace.Even the new base 3.7-litre V6 engine packs a punch as it can deliver 305 horsepower and can rev to 7000 rpm. Its rated city/highway fuel economy is an impressive 10.7/6.4 L/100km. And its power-to-weight ratio is almost double the previous base engine offering. Moving up a trim the Mustang GT has a 5.0-litre V8 under its hood. This en-gine is also a four-valve, all-aluminum engine, only this one is can pump-out 412 horsepower. And sounds great doing it! City/highway fuel consump-tion is rated at 11.8/7.9 L/100km and a larger (cast aluminum) oil pan also

extends oil change intervals. The GT also comes with electric pow-er-assist steering (EPAS), an upgraded braking system with vented discs all around and an enhanced suspension. GT buyers could also add a California Special appearance package and a Brembo brake and wheel package.A six-speed manual transmission was standard and automatic option was also a six-speed. This automatic has a grade-assist or “hill mode” feature that prevents sixth gear selection on a steep up-hill drive, plus engine braking going down a hill. There is another limited production edition of Mustang, the priciest and speediest pony of them all, the audacious Shelby GT500. Power comes from a supercharged 5.8-litre that can produce 650 horsepower and

it can also deliver over 600 ft-lb of tire-smoking torque. On the inside, a Mustang offers two-plus-two seating, which translates to limited leg and head room for the rear seat occupants. While Mustang’s trunk is not huge, it’s a little bigger and easier to access than the trunk in arch-rival Chevrolet Camaro. Both the coupe and the convertible editions of Mustang claim very good crash test safety ratings. Consumers Reports gives it “recommended buy” status and reliability has been average to better-than-average, with the V6 engine versions being slightly more dependable. The 2012 model year brought the re-introduction of a Boss 302 coupe edition, with a high-output 5.0-litre V8, plus a new premium trim level of the V6 edition. Selectable electric power-assisted steering, with comfort, sport and normal settings, also be-came standard on all models. The 2013 Mustang got lighting that is even more distinctive and some minor exterior tweaking. A new Select-Shift Automatic transmission with a manual shift feature was a significant mechanical upgrade and the six-speed manual gearbox also gained a hill start assist feature. An iconic American car, the Ford Mus-tang offers classic styling yet can also be a reliable and reasonably priced used sports car and a great driving experience.

$10,000. With there being so many U.S. armed forces bases in Germany, export models were highly sought after. Laura had no idea how rare her car was until she decided to embark on this project and began doing her research. The T5 registry has informed Laura that of the 453 Mustang Hardtop T5s built in 1967, hers is one of the few examples ordered with a vinyl roof, which is listed as an option in the V.I.N tag. There are only two T5s known to exist in Canada, hers and one in Ontario and only 45 have survived in various states of condition worldwide. It is going to be a busy

summer for Laura, her two daughters and the Mus-tang. I suspect her father never in his wildest dreams would have thought the car would end up as a show car let alone become a family affair involving three generations of his family. The T5 will debut at the Vancouver Classic Car Show and Auction at the PNE on June 21 and 22. Then it will head south in July to the Mustang Roundup in Bellevue, Washington, the world’s largest Mustang meet. The car is entered in the Concours restoration class

and should place well. Because this is the 50th anniversary of the Mustang the invitations are pouring in, the most recent one from an event in North Carolina, Laura still has a day job so unfortunately will miss that one. She will finish the summer off at the Luxury SuperCar weekend at VanDusen Gardens in September. The car will be viewed at least 30 or 31 times in a month, gracing the walls of garages and repair shops all over North America featured in a 2015 Ford calendar. This com-pletes a restoration project with a happy conclusion.

Rare Mustang ready to debut in publicOur classic and collector car expert continues today with the final part of his four-part series on the restoration of public relations executive Lau-ra Ballance’s rare 1967 Ford Mustang T5 by 360 Fabrica-tion in Abbotsford. The restoration story of Laura Ballance’s Mustang T5 has been interesting to follow and one that is not typical of this kind of project. Before I get carried away telling you what a T5 actually is, I have to report that with the help of the team at 360 Fabrication, suppliers White and Peters, BASF paint and the 200 plus hours of paint preparation, application, wet sanding and polishing by

master painter Darren Emmer-son, the car is finished! And here is the best part, it’s on time and under budget, almost unheard of in days gone by let alone today. So what is so special about a T5 Mustang? – The Ford Mustang could not be sold in Germany as a Mustang because a truck manufacturer there and later a motorcycle manufacturer owned the trademarked name Mustang. Both manufacturers offered to sell the rights to Ford for $10,000 each but Ford declined and decided the solution would be to use the initial Mustang project name T5 as the solution. With all of the changes required, they should have probably paid the

Your classic car could be: ‘Going once, going twice, sold!’The 2014 Vancouver Collector Car Show & Auction, present-ed by the Dueck Auto Group, is now accepting consignment applications for those looking to sell their cars. New at this year’s event, June 21 to 22 at the PNE Fairgrounds, is an auction preview, open only to the auction’s registered bidders and consigners. This event will allow sellers to show their vehicles and mingle with bidders before the auction. If you have an awesome car that you want to show off but don’t want to sell, they too can be displayed at the show for free. For more information on displaying or consigning your car, visit www.VancouverCollectorCars.com.

PENINSULA NEWS REVIEW - Friday, June 20, 2014 www.vicnews.com • A15

Don DescoteauNews staff

If there’s one thing David Black embodies, it’s organization.

The owner of Black Press —  which pub-lishes this newspaper and dozens more in B.C. and North America — accepted an honou-rary Doctor of Laws degree.

As he does with any project he’s embarked upon over the years, he takes it very seriously.

“It’s pretty special to be honoured from a university like this,” he said from his home office in Oak Bay. “They’ve had a lot of growth since I’ve been in Victoria.”

While he admitted to being a “little bit embar-rassed” to receive the honour — former Royal B.C. Museum CEO Pau-line Rafferty received her honourary Doctor of Laws during convo-cations this month — he feels pride at being a part of the growth at UVic.

Having based his growing newspaper group in Greater Vic-toria in the late 1980s, Black was among a group of leaders from the local business and academic communities who brainstormed the makeup and focus of UVic’s school of busi-ness in the mid-2000s.

“I was lucky enough to be involved from the very beginning,” he

said, adding that many good ideas were tossed around in the initial stages of the program’s development.

Such aspects as men-torship, student entre-preneurship and inter-national exposure to outside industry were brought forward as the educational strategy for the school was tak-ing shape.

“Those are still keys to the program and have been since the beginning,” he said. “It’s been fun watch-ing (the business pro-gram), mostly from a distance.”

The Black Press scholarship program, which awards $5,000 to one student in each of B.C.’s 37 school dis-

tricts for enrolment into UVic’s Peter B. Gustavson School of Business (so named in 2010), was an effort to

develop young entre-preneurs through-out B.C. as a way to strengthen the prov-ince’s economy.

“I’ve met a lot of these kids over the years. They’re terrific,” he said of the scholar-ship winners.

Rafferty, who guided the museum from 2001 until retiring in 2012, called the honourary doctorate a great and “very humbling” hon-our.

She, too, has built a relationship with UVic, through helping develop the cultural sector leadership pro-gram for the Division of Continuing Studies.

“Over the many years, the university and the RBCM had a very close partnership and I think that con-tinues today, on many fronts,” she said.

Danny DanielsContributor

Myrtle Acton brings truth to the saying that the older you get, the better you get.

Competing in the Women’s 80-84 age cat-egory in the Kamloops Centennial Track Meet, she set a new Canadian discus throw record of 17.95 meters and earned another record of 3,653 points in the throws pentathlon (javelin, shot, hammer, heavy weight, discus).

Acton, who already holds Canadian records in the shot, hammer and weight throw, joined her B.C. Senior Games friends in Pen Track earlier this year after moving from the Interior.

She competes along-side Les East (M75) who won his javelin, discus, shot, hammer and high jump evets in Duncan last weekend, as did Peter Auvinen (M65) in his four throw-ing competitions and Carl Jensen (M40) in the discus.

Peggy Morfitt (W75) won her discus, jav-elin, shot and hammer throws, while Anne Murfitt (W50) had a personal best in the hammer (22.38m) and finished second in her other three throwing events.

These athletes prove inspirational to Pen Track youngsters such as Conor Loughnane, 12, who earned three winning personal bests in the 100m and 300m

together with a second in the shot.

In her first track sea-son, nine--year-old Adri-ana Hilton set a PB in the 600m, finishing 37 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor. She also finished 56 seconds ahead in the 1000m.

Other successes were turned in by Piper Battersby, 16, in the 1500m, 3000m and the 2000m steeplechase, brother Finn, 14, in his 1500m steeplechase,

and Jacqueline Gaby, 16, in the 3000m race walk.

Recording second and third place finishes were Niamh Gibbons, nine, in shot and long jump, Julia Peterson, 11, in 600m and 1000m, Alexis Van Den Bulk, 11, in discus, Anna-Maria Hilton, 14, in the 1500m steeplechase, Cameron Whalley, 14, in the high jump, David Johnson, 15, in the long jump and Mette Fosberg (W60) in the 100m.

Since then he has been heav-ily involved with promoting the sport within the community and at the school level and is cur-

rently a chief instructor with the Victoria Judo Club as well as a member of the provincial grad-ing board.

In any industry, it’s natural for people who’ve been around for a long time to feel they have the edge on someone new to the business.

In real estate sales, the same sce-nario applies. But is it as simple as saying experience is everything? Perhaps not.

Technology has definitely changed the way Realtors do busi-ness, especially from the standpoint of forwarding information about new listings to potential buyers, or moving the appropriate paperwork back and forth between agents and legal professionals.

But some things haven’t changed, say Deborah and Roy Coburn, a hus-band and wife team who have been in the business for 26 and 24 years, respectively.

“We’re a person-to-person ser-vice,” Deborah says. “That’s always the way we’ve operated.”

While she admits most buyers today get their first glimpse of a home online, she says, it still comes down to working with clients in per-son to really get a handle on their real estate needs.

She cites three separate out-of-town client couples who found “the perfect home” online in Greater Vic-toria, only to arrive and discover in a showing that the property wasn’t at all what they had in mind or envi-sioned.

“In some ways, technology can only go so far,” she says.

While many listing agents send information on homes to buyer’s agents via email, Roy finds it help-ful to pick up the phone and call

his counterparts to chat about “the nuances of a home” that one might not pick up in a photo.

At the other end of the scale, Taylor McMullen, 24, is in his fifth month as an agent. He’s enjoyed some success already, partially due to building a new Internet market-ing program for himself and his father, longtime Victoria-area Real-tor Michael McMullen.

Taylor, who also speaks Manda-rin, has tapped into the Asian immi-grant market, largely through his online work.

In that respect, he views technol-ogy as something not to be feared, but to be embraced, a character-istic he says he shares with other younger professionals.

“I think the difference between (younger and older Realtors) is

we grew up in a period of change. Everything is changing so quickly and we’re easily able to adapt to change,” he says. “There’s still lots of risk-takers out there, but I’d say the average young person is more likely to take risks and change.”

While taking full advantage of technology to secure and work with clients can work well, McMullen admits it’s just one tool at his dis-posal.

But he admits much of his busi-ness has come from referrals, door knocking and cold calling: good old-fashioned personal contact.

“Real estate’s all about relation-ships. The majority of your business will come from referrals no matter how much marketing you do,” he says.

The Coburns couldn’t agree more.

Deborah chuckles at a fringe strat-egy making the rounds lately, that of giving home evaluations without setting foot on a person’s property.

Whether representing clients look-ing to buy or sell, agents’ respon-sibility is huge, she says, given the need to know everything about a house.

“When it comes down to it, it still requires a relationship with us.”

One thing agents of any age may find today more so than in past years, McMullen says, is that younger buy-ers tend to be less patient and more focused on saving money than being loyal.

“I find younger people are always chasing the better deal or the quick response (from a Realtor). You’ve got to be so quick with everything.”

PURSUING A CAREER IN REAL

ESTATE?

BUYER’S TIP | A good Realtor can save you time and money; interview them early in your home search

There’s no substitute for personal contact Are you a self-

starter? – If you’re good at time management and

don’t mind doing a lot of legwork before getting paid, you may be right for

the profession.

Do you have enough savings to cover your learning curve? – It’s recommended that new agents have two years’ income put away when

they start in the business.

Do you like to learn? – The education process for Realtors is ongoing

and mandatory. Courses on a variety of topics are regularly offered by the

Victoria Real Estate Board.

Get rsthand information – Talk to practising agents

challenges of the industry
