n tonight PenDulum PrePare to unveil early tracks from their third lP, ‘immersion’ while DJing, to the 3000-strong crowd at an impressive new night at matter curated by the band. lead man rob swire admits that despite second album ‘in silico’s’ commercial success, “we chased our tails too often, got bogged down with buzzwords and ended up with about two tracks we actually liked.” it seems the boys are preparing to go back to their roots with a much more ‘electronic’ new album. and as bass reverberates through the room and mc Verse suddenly drops to the floor to pump some press-ups, they all agree that with ‘immersion’ the pressure’s been off and the good times are back.

moments later their three DJ/one

mc set opens with the tempo-bending electronic screams of ‘salt in the wound’. ‘water colour’ reaches new heights with bass-rolling, acidic builds and ‘crush’ takes the subtleties of ‘hyc’ and expands. ripping the crowd to shreds, Pendulum swing from Daft Punk and Prodigy samples straight into ‘set me on Fire’, their first whump-shuddering dubstep monster before the slow-breaking ‘Vulture’ is greeted by zane lowe in the DJ box with a grin.

‘ransom’ has the security guard punching the air, while the most poppy tune goes to ‘the island’ – at least at first. it seems Pendulum have dropped another banger on the barbie: prepare for total ‘immersion’. PHIL DUDMAN

‘Immersion’ will be released in May on Ear Storm/Warnerssa
