Joy to the World

Joy Joy !!! The holidays are upon us. How you react to this statement is definitely a matter of

choice. You can recoil in horror and become anxious obsessing about how much there is left to prepare

or enthusiastically burst into a chorus of Rudolph. We all have challenges to face some greater than oth-

ers but our response makes all the difference. We can generate positive emotions, happiness and calm.

In Norway where from late Nov to late Jan, the sun never goes above the horizon line there is

much less seasonal depression that expected. The Norwegians love the winter season, they love their

outdoor activities especially skiing. They dress appropriately so they can enjoy being out in nature and

the beauty of the season. Community becomes of utmost importance at this time. They spend more time

in cozy activities, enjoying hot beverages, conversation and meals together. It becomes an intense

bonding time. Then there is always the beauty of the sun sitting on the horizon and reflecting off the

snow that is simply awesome.

Moments that inspire awe are incredibly beneficial for our physical and mental health. Research

has shown that people who regularly experience awe are more generous, experience better health and

are happier than those who do not take the time to revel in the marvels of life. The Grand Canyon,

Northern Lights, and crystal blue Hawaiian waters are not the only inspirations. Driving everyday

through the fall, I would catch myself being inspired by the beauty of the fall explosion of colors. Watch-

ing the sunlight sparkle on the pond waters & watching my 2 year old granddaughter delight as the

Christmas decorations appeared in stores with lights, songs and motion made me smile and excited for

the upcoming season (even if it was the day after Halloween).

The Holiday season presents numerous opportunities to stop and embrace the small daily mira-

cles of life. The delicious smells that come from the kitchen, twinkling decorative lights, the silence and

beauty of falling snow and the smiles of those around us should prompt us to wake each day dedicated

to spending our time more joyfully.

I wish you all the beauty, joy and peace of the Season
