SPECIAL PROJECTSPresidentCraig Duewall [email protected]

Board President Craig Duewall has been in contact with the Austin Police Department officer William Harvey about crime in our area.

Pemberton is located in “Baker Region,” which can generally be described as 51st Street to the North, Lake Austin to the West, I-35 to the East, and Town Lake to the South. That is a very large area.

The good news is that violent crime in Baker Region is down 34% from last year. The bad news is that property crime is nearly the same. Approximately 1/3 of all property crime is the burglary of vehicles. Remember to keep your cars and homes locked. APD confirmed that most vehicle and home burglary is the result of unlocked doors.

Officer Harvey and Craig specifically discussed the following: • Increasing Dedicated Patrols in Pemberton. A dedicated

patrol is a cop that is specifically assigned to an area (a street or an intersection) for a few days to specifically enforce traffic violations. Craig has asked for stepped-up patrols along Northwood and Harris to enforce speed limits and 4-way stops.

• Noise complaints re: West Campus. Officer Harvey provided strategies for combatting these noise issues. Craig will pass these along to Monnie Anderson, who continues to fight the good fight re: West Campus noise.

• The ADP’s willingness to patrol your home while you are away on vacation. It had been rumored that APD would perform the same service as PHNA’s Away From Home List. Be advised that the APD will not typically patrol your house if you are on vacation. If you would like an extra set of eyes watching your home while you are on vacation, donate to the PHNA Security Program. Only families that donate can sign-up for the Away From Home List.

• Officer Harvey was very complimentary of the PHNA Security Program. In the coming weeks the board will be having the Security Program’s Annual Fundraiser and you will be getting a solicitation to support the PHNA Security Patrol. One patrol costs $150, and we need everyone’s support to keep this valuable program.

SOLICITOR SAFETY! 1. Acknowledge you are home: When someone knocks at

your door, acknowledge you are home. Talk through the door without opening it. If you don't answer, and it happens to be a criminal, they may attempt to break into your home.

2. Do not feel obligated to open the door: You are not obligated to open the door to anyone. If they say there is a car problem, offer to call their road service for them. If it is an accident, call 9-1-1 for them. The idea is to keep them outside and you make the call for them. Ask them to stand by while you place the call. If the person stays, it is a good chance that they are legitimate, however, if they leave quickly, it is probably a con.

3. Insist on identification: Identification should always be verified BEFORE opening the door. Insist they disclose their name, company and the product or service represented. Service representatives should have appointments and not just "show up" at your door. Also, make sure to install a wide angle viewer in your door, so you have a better view – you can buy them at any hardware store.

4. Call if the person is persistent or if something seems off: While some solicitors are legitimate, it is also a tactic used by criminals to case neighborhoods, looking for easy targets. Be aware that criminals will often be carrying backpacks and cell phones. People who are lying often give too many details, touch their face a lot, or keep looking away. Experienced con men will also send younger kids into the neighborhood to do the knocking, knowing that a kid do not draw the suspicion that an adult might.

5. Get a description: Start at the head and then work down to the feet. Do they have a hat? What color shirt? What color pants? Are there other details, like a logo on the shirt? How tall are they (compare them to a family member.) Look for other details; distinguishing features, direction of travel, another person, a vehicle.

6. Help police connect the dots: If anything seems strange or off, CALL! Why? Because criminals move around and calling in things that seem suspicious can help the police connect the dots. Maybe the police have had reports of another person matching this description in another neighborhood. Maybe somebody a few streets over reported that same car to the Watch. Maybe other neighbors have reported the same fake company going door-to-door to their APD representative.

Call 911 When It’s happening now. "I just had a solicitor on my door and he could not show me a company card"

Call 311 When you want the police to be aware of something, but it’s not an urgent matter "My neighbor just told me there was a young man who knocked his door last night, He was driving a white Ford truck and he seemed too persistent.

The rain held off until the afternoon of September 28 so that more than 50 Pemberton households could offer surplus stuff for sale at the first Neighborhood

Garage Sale Day. A number of families signed up for the option of including their addresses in the classifieds ad placed in the Austin American Statesman and posted on Craigslist and many others chose to get involved more informally...conducting impromptu sales by placing items in their front yards and attracting customers that way.

Still others joined with nearby neighbors to share yard space for a co-operative marketplace.

Young entrepreneurs from at least two families, the Comstocks and the Ericksons, operated lemonade refreshment

PHNA funded the paid advertising, signage, printing of maps and offered helium balloons to those sellers who wanted them.

5:56am . . . 5:57am . . . 5:58am . . . 5:59am . . . 6:00!!!! It’s jogging time! Where’s Allison? Aaallisooooon! C’mon, quick—where’s the leash? Latch it on, quick, latch it—careful, you caught my fur in there! It’s O.K., forget it, just open the door, open it, open it, open—why are you going back inside? Again you can’t find the keys? Four children and a Master’s degree, and you can’t find your keys when you know I’ve been waiting and waiting to go to the dog park? Scratch, paw, whine . . . and we’re off! Leap! Run! Bark! Oh, sorry about that: I forgot you were holding onto the leash when I jumped down the stairs. It’s just a little blood—here, I’ll lick it. Now, let’s go already! Claire and Gaston and wheeeeee, down the hill to Shoal Creek.

Hurry, Allison, off with the leash, off, off, off—can’t you go any faster? FREE, I’m FREE! Run, leap, bound! So, where is everybody? Spike! Sebastian? Yooo-hooo, anybody around? Oh, there’s they are—Hey, Lizzy! (sniff, sniff). Whassup, Dwayne?

(sniff ). What did you have for breakfast—liver? I got chicken and fish. Heard anything about Milo? What exactly did the vet say? Bummer. Hey, who’s the dish? That is one fine Pomeranian. How many months until April? Sweet! Who’s her groomer, by the way? Do they nick?

Sure, let’s race! On your mark, get set—GO! Run, run, run, circle round, back and around, back and around, race to the trees, back to the bench, back to the trees, barkbarkbark! What’s that, Allison, time to go? If I wait too long to follow, she’ll pack me off to the trainers at obedience school—now that’s a humorless bunch.

O.K., positioning myself on Allison’s left. Jog, jog, jog, jog, jog, jog, jog, jog, jog—hmmm, that aroma. . . darn, this leash is so short . . . pull, pull, pull—stop and stiff—come on, Allison,

I’m not finished! And the poop here is glorious! Wait, time to mark my turf, again. And again over there. Maybe it’s time to re-doo-doo all the bushes around this part of the trail. Allison’s obsessed with picking up the poop right away—doesn’t give it chance to marinate. You should see the house. I’ve tried reasoning with her about letting it go to the dogs but humans are just weird about smells. I rolled in some poop once and Allison bathed me four times. One time I peed on the kitchen floor just for fun and Allison was so mad she used a bad word: “Pound.” I watch myself in the house, now.

Time to mark turf: here, here, over here, too. If I make too many stops, Allison yanks the leash. Kelly explained to me that all females—even pick of the litter like Allison—like to jerk a guy’s chain, so I’d better get used to it if I want that Pomeranian.

Pant, pant, pant, pant, pant, pant . . . whew, it’s getting hot! Gotta stop for a drink. Slurp, slurp, slurp, gulp, slurp, slurp, gulp. Into the creek, quick, before Allison sees! Splash, jump, swim, climb on rock, jump, splash, slurp, slurp, gulp, splash! ShakeShakeShakeShakeShakeShakeShake. Pant, pant, up the hill on Gaston--pant, pant—what is it, 105F? C’mon, Allison, c’mon! Stop fooling around and make me some lunch!
