Gail’s Triangle and Gardenby: Laura Bennett

The Triangle at Harris and Wooldridge was dedicated to the memory of devoted PHNA Board Member Gail Morriss on Saturday, February 23rd.

Almost seventy friends, family and neighbors gathered to celebrate the completion of Gail’s Garden on Harris Boulevard. The morning began at the home of Martha and Alan Moore, 2420 Harris, where tributes and eulogies were shared by Jeff Minch, past President of the PHNA, Laura Bennett, Gail’s next door neighbor for many years, and Gail’s children, John Mays of Westlake Village, California, Anne O’Conor of Houston and Steve Mays of Park City, Utah. The final prayer in the Triangle was given by two of Gail’s grandchildren, Allison and Griffin O’Conor.

Gail served the Pemberton Heights Neighborhood Association for over ten years as a Board and Committee member. Her energies brought us the first carriage rides at Christmas, the origin of the Pemberton Neighborhood picnic, a special interest in actively preserving the character and heritage of the houses within our neighborhood as well as the inspiration for the efforts to renovate the charming triangles that adorn many of our corners in Pemberton.

Gail was a realtor with Mary Nell Garrison Realtors for many years and most recently she was associated with Tate Property. She sold many houses in our neighborhood but most importantly found many homes for families and children who continue to enjoy our wonderful community.

Gail Morriss died on February 10, 2011 but her memory will be with us as we all pass her Triangle daily. The Triangle at Harris and Wooldridge, Gail’s Triangle and Garden, is one of the smallest of all the eleven triangles in our neighborhood but surely it is the sweetest! The ground was excavated and the new landscape design by David Ramert, Landscape Architect, was implemented when funding was made available through memorials in honor of Gail. The trees have been cared for and the grounds have been glorified with perfect plantings for our Texas sun. There is a large birdbath in the center of the live oaks now, thanks to the arrival of irrigation water for the space. A special thank you to Sabrina Brown for her efforts in getting the city to turn on the water! In front of the statuary is a granite marker to Gail’s memory that reads: “Green was her world and green it shall forever be.” Please come visit Gail’s garden at Harris and Wooldridge!

Meet new neighbors and discuss land use issues at the

Lunch Meeting April 16The discussion topic at this month’s neighborhood lunch will be

The Pemberton JournalShould a 1973 home

be historic?The city recently changed the threshold requiring historic status

staff reviews for a demolition or remodeling permit to any structure at least 40 years old. This is supposedly to prevent a “historically valuable” house from being prematurely demolished.

So is any structure built between 1963 (the previous threshold ) and 1973 really “historic”? Or is this another example of over-reaching regulation, the demise of private property rights and another increase in the cost ( time and money) of building a home in Austin? The answer depends on your views and on whether you might be the home owner wanting to build your dream home with your precious limited dollars.

On Jan 17th, city council discussed granting ( or forcing) historic zoning against the owner’s wishes on a 1960’s era home in Tarrytown. The owner had bought what appeared to be an old, small, outdated home with the intention of demolishing the structure to build her dream home. Unknown to her, her seemingly average looking mid-century ranch home was deemed by the Historic Landmark Commission to be historically significant. Apparently it was one of the few residences designed in Austin by an architect known for designing Holiday Inns.

This was enough to persuade the commission that a valuable architectural structure was about to be lost. In what has becoming a typical scenario, city staff was instructed to do additional research and find something significant enough about this structure to initiate historic zoning.

The Commission recommended granting historic zoning, requiring the project to be delayed another month, to have an additional hearing before the Planning and Zoning Commission to receive their recommendation. The PZC did not agree with the HLC, and recommended the demo permit be granted. However, in present day Austin, this is never the end of the story and, with a staff recommendation to grant historic zoning, the project had to be delayed another month again in order to have it placed on the council agenda for discussion. At the council hearing, enough public opposition had been heard to convince the council that the home owner, and not the HLC’s and staff’s views, should prevail, at least on this case.

If this project had been in a designated historic district such as ours, a homeowner might be criticized as being unaware of a looming historic zoning as a possibility. However, this home was barely 50 years old and presented no indication of anything “historic “. If historic zoning had been granted ( even against the homeowner’s wishes) the homeowner would have been prohibited from making any exterior modifications or additions that would change the home’s “historic “ character. The homeowner would in essence become a trapped steward of property that has become considered a public amenity.

If historic zoning had been granted, would this put the tax base in Austin in a precarious position? Who will remain to be paying property taxes when any structure in Austin built before 1973 can be zoned historic and qualify for a tax exemption? The city forgoes more than $4 million in tax revenue on over 575 homes now. What are the ramifications of precious tax dollars being spent on staff time and forced historic zoning cases, while our parks go unkempt and our pools and libraries stay closed?

Pemberton Heights Residents Cook and Ride for MSPemberton Heights residents Brady McEvoy (age

13) and Sophia Menyhert (age 14) are raising money to fight multiple sclerosis by riding their bikes in the "MS150" this April. They will ride from Houston to Austin in two days and have collectively raised $13,000 so far for the cause. They train three times a week and recently completed the "Pedal Through the Pines" ride, 27 miles through the hills of Bastrop. Sophia raises money by selling delicious made-from-scratch red velvet cakes and Brady by baking and selling wonderful homemade mint chocolate chip cookies.

Sophia's six-inch cakes are $25 and her nine-inch are $30 (to order, please contact [email protected]). “Nobody really understands me. They think I’m slimy, sinister, coldblooded, and unfit for human company--but they’re so wrong. Eighteen years ago, when Diane and Rex first brought me to Claire Avenue, their son, Paul, was only 6 years old (cute enough to eat). Right then and there, I wrapped myself around him until I was pried off, stuffed into a cage, and told to knock off the wrapping business. Still, it felt good being in a house with two lawyers, and before long they came to see me as one of their own. Now I’d like to speak my piece.

First, to set the record straight: Pythons do not constrict. They hug. We are an affectionate, tender species who want nothing more than to play with baby animals. We are full of love, and come to think of it, full of those we love. No fangs, no venom, just the warmth of one body wrapped around another. I like to nestle between a mattress and box springs or loop myself around a door handle. Nobody can even tell I’m there. It’s easier that way.

Second, I am not the cold, unfriendly creature you see in those reptile retirement homes they call zoos. For me, it’s all about bonding over dinner, a warm embrace, and the power of touch to take your breath away.

I feel great personal satisfaction that little Paul, who never forgot to feed me my rodents, is now at Harvard studying herpetology and evolutionary biology. I braid myself just thinking about it.”

Sweet Dapper started life ruff and is now ready for a life full of love and happiness. He's approximately 1 year old and only 23lbs. He's super loving and affectionate. He loves cats & gentle dogs. Dapper is a pleasure to spend time with. He is super affectionate, smart and extremely quiet. He loves chasing tennis balls.

Miss Lovely River was found living in a field. She was very skinny and is so grateful to be taken care of and adored. We estimate her to be around 2 1/2-3 years old. She appears to be a Plott Hound Mix. We call her “the fence whisperer” because she is SO perfect at calming dogs down who are upset or aggressive on the opposite side of a fence. She has been out and about behaving beautifully at local Austin pet friendly restaurants. She just makes herself comfy under the table and waits patiently. She also LOVES riding in the car. She is a wonderful companion. She would be a great running partner or agility dog. She’s also quiet, crate trained, spayed, vaccinated, & heartworm negative. River knows some commands and is excellent at ‘sit’ & ‘shake’
