Renungan

Liebeck sued McDonald’s for selling coffe that was too hot and for failling to warn her of the
danger of the hot coffe it served. McDonald’s rejected Liebeck’s pretrial offer to settle the case
for $300,000. At trial, McDonald’s denied that it had been negligent and asserted that Liebeck”s
own negligence-opening a hot coffe cup on her lap-caused her injuries. The jury heard evidence
that McDonald’s enforces a quality-control rule that requires its restaurants and franchises to serve
coffe at 180 to 190 degrees Fahrenheit. Evidence showed that this was 10 to 30 degrees hotter
that coffe served by competing restaurant chains, and approximately 40 to 50 degrees than normal
house browed coffe.
Because of this case, McDonald’s and other purveyors of coffe have reduced the temperature at
which they sell coffe and have placed warnings on their coffe cups.
