HISTORYGhent–Wevelgem began its life in 1934 as an amateur race held in the fall. It was dedicated to local cycling hero Gaston Rebry, a Wevelgem native, who that year won the Tour of Flanders and Paris–Roubaix. The race was converted to a professional event in 1945, still in the fall, but two years later was granted a spring date, with Rebry as the race director. Although the start and finish cities remained the same, the race route was regularly changed, sometimes including cobbled climbs used in the Tour of Flanders, and more usually following a f lat route along the North Sea coast before visiting climbs near the French border. The race often ended in mass sprints, but cold, wet and windy conditions would break the pack into echelons, and small breakaways were common. Memorable sprint wins were taken by Englishman Barry Hoban (over three-time winner Eddy Merckx, in 1974); Italian Mario Cipollini (over a 45-strong pack, in 1993); and Belgian Tom Boonen (his first major classic success, in 2004).
COURSEThe cobbled Kemmelberg climb was first used in 1955 and gained in importance as a launch pad for successful breakaways, despite being more than 30 kilometers from the finish. The start was moved out of Ghent to nearby Deinze in
2003, and last year, for the first time, the start was in Ypres (Ieper in Flemish), which has seen the start of the women’s race since its debut in 2012. After an opening two hours on f lat roads, the new course heads for the familiar hilly loops near the French border, with three trips up the Kemmelberg (for a total of 11 climbs) and three sections of gravel roads known as Plugstreets. The women climb the Kemmelberg twice in their 144-kilometer event.

5 | FLANDERS CLASSICS GUIDE: GENT-WEVELGEM IN FLANDERS FIELDS
Sunday, March 28, 2021[MEN] Start: Ieper/Ypres. Finish: Wevelgem. Distance: 254 km.
[WOMEN] Start: Ieper/Ypres. Finish: Wevelgem. Distance: 144 km.
JOHN’S PREDICTIONSLast October, race favorites Wout Van Aert and Mathieu van der Poel marked each other so closely in the nine-man breakaway group that the sprint finish was fought between the other seven. They are unlikely to make the same mistake, so look for one of the big duo to win. Twice a podium finisher, Germany’s Lisa Brennauer is due for a victory among the women.

WOMEN’S RACE
HISTORYFirst held in 1945, this race was called Dwars door België (“Across Belgium”) for its first 55 years, and was contested as a two-day for most of it first 20 editions. With its rebirth as the Dwars door Vlaanderen (“Across Flanders”) in 2000, what was regarded as a secondary classic gradually gained international resonance. That progress has continued. It joined the UCI Europe Tour in 2005, attained the status of an “above category” event in 2013, and was elevated to the UCI WorldTour in 2017. Throughout its history, the race has finished in Waregem, a town of 38,000 between Kortrijk and Ghent. The most prestigious winners in the latter years of last century were Jan Raas, Eric Vanderaerden and Johan Museeuw—men who also won the Tour of Flanders. With the race’s growing stature, the list of winners has become more international with victories by Australian sprinter Robbie McEwen (2003), Frenchman Sylvain Chavanel (2008), Italian Oscar Gatto (2013) and Dutchman Mathieu van der Poel (2019). A women’s edition was added in 2012.
COURSETaking place four days before the Tour of Flanders, the Dwars Door Vlaanderen has a similar course, but at 184 kilometers is 70 kilometers shorter than the monument.
Starting from Roeselare, the opening section is f lat, passing through the finish town of Waregem (where the women’s race starts) before reaching the first climb, the Kruisberg, after 72 kilometers. The course then loops through the Flemish Ardennes before heading north to the finish. These final 30 kilometers feature two sections of cobblestones and three climbs, including the cobbled 500-meter-long Nokereberg 11 kilometers from Waregem. The women’s race has an identical finale but only 10 climbs, rather than 13 for the men.
Words: John Wilcockson
11 | FLANDERS CLASSICS GUIDE: DWARS DOOR VLAANDEREN
Wednesday, March 31, 2021[MEN] Start: Roeselare. Finish: Waregem. Distance: 184 km.
[WOMEN] Start & finish: Waregem. Distance: 122 km.
JOHN’S PREDICTIONSAlthough the race sometimes ends in a mass sprint, as in 2016, the win is usually contested by a small breakaway group. If that’s the case this year, look to past protagonists Mathieu van der Poel, Sep Vanmarcke and Yves Lampaert to be in the mix. In the women’s race, Ellen van Dijk will be seeking her hat-trick against the likes of Lucinda Brand.

WOMEN’S RACE
HISTORYAlthough the Tour of Flanders (De Ronde van Vlaanderen in Flemish) is the most prestigious of the Flanders Classics it is the youngest monument—the other four (Milan–San Remo, Paris–Roubaix, Liège–Bastogne–Liège and the Tour of Lombardy) are all six or more years older. The Tour of Flanders started out in 1913 as a purely domestic race organized by a new Flemish language sports magazine SportWereld. The first edition was the longest at 324 kilometers, on a clockwise circuit that passed through all the major cities of East and West Flanders, starting in Ghent and finishing at a velodrome on the city outskirts. The winner, Paul Deman, out-sprinted a group of five riders after 12 hours in the saddle.
By the 1930s, the race had caught on as a national festival, with the 1933 edition contested by 164 riders, watched by what police estimated as 500,000 spectators. Of the first 30 editions, 29 were won by Belgians. The only “foreigner” to beat the locals was Swiss rider Henri Suter in 1923; but it wasn’t until the Italian Fiorenzo Magni came to the race in 1949 and took the victory three years in a row that non-Belgian teams began to see it as classic they should add to their schedules. The turning point, which truly established the Ronde as one of the very top classics, came in 1955.That year, the key breakaway was made on the old Mur de Grammont (not today’s Kappelmuur) at Geraardsbergen, 60 kilometers from the finish, by four established stars: two-time winner Rik Van Steenbergen of Belgium, 1951 Tour de France winner Hugo Koblet of Switzerland, reigning Tour and world champion Louison Bobet of France and Bobet’s French teammate Bernard Gauthier. Bobet told his French teammate
to attack on the short rise before the finish, which forced the other two to chase before Bobet came through to handily take the sprint from Koblet and Van Steenbergen. Four other world champions have won the Ronde wearing the rainbow jersey: Rik Van Looy (in 1962), Eddy Merckx (1975), Tom Boonen (2006) and Peter Sagan (2016)—results that further cemented this classic as one of the true monuments.
When the women’s race was introduced in 2004, there was speculation whether the female racers would be able to cope with the steep, cobbled hills; but they soon dispelled that

Sunday, April 4, 2021[MEN] Start: Antwerp. Finish: Oudenaarde. Distance: 254 km.
[WOMEN] Start & finish: Oudenaarde. Distance: 152 km.
JOHN’S PREDICTIONSAfter two second places, a third, a fourth and a fifth in his 13 participations, Greg Van Avermaet is again one of the favorites, but the veteran will have a hard time matching the big three: defending champion Mathieu van der Poel, Wout Van Aert and Julian Alaphilippe—who could become the sixth man to win the Ronde wearing the rainbow jersey. The Dutch will likely dominate the women’s race with Amy Pieters, Anna van der Breggen, Annemiek van Vleuten and defending champ Chantal van den Broek-Blaak all on top form.

negative image. There has been some magnificent racing in the 17 editions, with eight world road champions among the list of winners.
COURSEKnowing the course details intimately is more important at the Ronde than any other classic. That’s because, after the initial 80 kilometers from the grand start in Antwerp, the remaining five-or-so hours of racing are fought out on mostly narrow back roads, with constant turns, ups and downs, where knowing the terrain is key.
They hit the Oude Kwaremont after 121 kilometers and will hit this critical cobbled hill twice more (with 54 and
16 kilometers to go). After the first pass, the course heads on a long loop to the east, taking in eight of the race’s 19 climbs. The second passage of the Oude Kwaremont after 200 kilometers can trigger key moves because next up, only 3 kilometers away, is the race’s steepest climb, the Paterberg, followed 7 kilometers later by the next steepest, the notorious Koppenberg. Three more climbs precede the last and usually decisive passage of the Oude Kwaremont, where the winning break usually emerges prior to a final reckoning on the Paterberg with 13 kilometers to go. This year’s women’s race is 152 kilometers long, with five sectors of “f lat” cobblestones and 13 climbs—but not the Koppenberg.

18° Ronde van Vlaanderen - VrouwenZondag 4 april 2021
WOMEN’S RACE
HISTORYAlthough this is the oldest of the Flanders Classics, first run in 1907, it is also the least demanding, with a completely f lat parcours that usually results in a mass sprint finish. Previously known as the Scheldeprijs Schoten and the Scheldeprijs Vlaanderen, it has been called simply the Scheldeprijs (“Schelde Grand Prix”) since it was acquired by Flanders Classics in 2010. It is now part of the recently created UCI ProSeries, one category below the WorldTour. For its first 80 years, the race was held in July or August, and only moved to April in 1987. The race was won 76 times by Belgians in the first century of it life; but the podium has since been increasingly dominated by other nations, and the last Belgian winner was Tom Boonen in 2006. The record holder is Germany’s Marcel Kittel (now retired), who won the race five times between 2012 and 2017. The women’s race is being held for the first time.
COURSEIn its early years, the Scheldeprijs started and finished in Antwerp. The finish was changed to the nearby town of Schoten in 1916 and has remained there ever since. The biggest change to the event came in 2018, when the start was moved to the Dutch port town of Terneuzen, which is linked to Ghent by a ship canal. From here, the course takes a tunnel
beneath the Schelde River onto the Dutch polders, some of which are below sea level. The riders enter Belgium halfway through the 198 kilometers before reaching Schoten for three laps of a f lat, 17.5-kilometer finishing circuit. Because of Covid-19 restrictions, last year’s race just made 10 laps of the Schoten circuit. Both the men’s and the women’s races end with three laps of the Schoten circuit.
21 | FLANDERS CLASSICS GUIDE: SCHELDEPRIJS
Wednesday, April 7, 2021[MEN] Start: Terneuzen. Finish: Schoten. Distance: 194 km.
[WOMEN] Start & finish: Schoten. Distance: 136 km.
JOHN’S PREDICTIONSThe Scheldeprijs has seen a mass finish every year since 2005. Prevailing west winds across the Dutch polders could break up the men’s peloton in the opening 100 kilometers, but the odds are that a sprinter will win again. Perhaps that sprinter will be defending champion Caleb Ewen, though he could have stiff competition from the likes of Sam Bennett, Fernando Gaviria and Elia Viviani. Perhaps one of the veteran Dutch women sprinters, Kirsten Wild or Marianne Vos, will take their inaugural Scheldeprijs.

ScheldeprijsWOMEN’S RACE
HISTORYFirst held in 1961, the Brabantse Pijl (Flèche Brabançonne in French) traverses the Flemish- and French-speaking parts of the Brabant region in central Belgium. The race first started in Zaventem, near Brussels Airport, but moved to Leuven (Louvain in French) in 2008; while the finish was moved from Alsemberg to Overijse in 2010. This semi-classic was upgraded to the UCI ProSeries last year. It acts as a transitional race between the cobbled classics and the more selective, hilly races in Dutch Limburg and the Belgian Ardennes and has always favored riders who can both climb and sprint. Though the Brabantse Pijl has been won by such Belgian icons as Eddy Merckx, Freddy Maertens and Roger De Vlaeminck, the rider with most victories is a lesser-known Belgian, Edwig Van Hooydonck, who won the race four times between 1987 and 1995. Just as the race traditionally ended with multiple laps of a hilly circuit at Alsemberg, it now uses an even more demanding finishing circuit created by the organizer at Overijse. The women’s race was added in 2018.
COURSEFrom the start in Leuven, the course heads southwest to Waterloo before a turn to the north for two laps of a hilly 15-kilometer loop near Alsemberg. It then heads back on the
same roads to Overijse for a circuit finish. There are almost four laps of the 22.6-kilometer loop that features the cobbled half-kilometer-long Moskesstraat, 11 kilometers from the finish line. All told, there are 27 climbs in the 202 kilometers, more than enough to separate the best climbers from the rest—especially as there’s also an uphill finish. The women ride a lap less of the finishing circuit than the men.
Words: John Wilcockson

JOHN’S PREDICTIONSBelgians such as Tim Wellens are a constant threat on a course like this, while all-terrain sprinters Michael Matthews and Sonny Colbrelli can’t be ruled out. But with past winners Julian Alaphilippe and Mathieu van der Poel unlikely to start this year, it may give an opening for new British phenom Tom Pidcock to grab a prestigious win. In the women’s race, perhaps Aussie Grace Brown can repeat her solo victory of last year.
RECENT PODIUMS2018 1. Marta Bastianelli (I); 2. Leah Kirchmann (Can); 3. Marianne Vos (Nl).
2019 1. Sofie De Vuyst (B); 2, Marta Cavalli (I); 3. Coryn Rivera (USA).
2020 1. Grace Brown (Aus); 2. Liane Lippert (G); 3. Floortje Mackaij (Nl).
