PELE® Functional Principle

PELE® is a fuzeless operational ammunition without

any explosives which uses a physical effect for function.

PELE® (Penetrator with Enhanced Lateral Effect) is a

skillful combination of two different materials with

different densities. The outer projectile body is made

from high-density material like steel or tungsten.

The inner core consists of a low-density material like

aluminum or plastic.

When the projectile hits a target, e.g. a 2mm steel

plate, the high-density outer component easily

penetrates the target material. By contrast, the low-

density inner component, which has a much lower

penetration performance, will be dramatically slowed

down on target impact.

Features of PELE® Ammunition

This causes a tremendous pressure build-up inside

the projectile which reaches values in the region

of GigaBars. As a result, the projectile disintegrates

into a large number of highly effective fragments.

The number and size of the fragments is adjustable

as a function of the projectile‘s length.

The parameters determining the PELE® effect are

the materials used for the inner and outer

component of the projectile and their physical

dimensions. The PELE® effect can be achieved

by just using standard materials.

PELE® ammunition is the result of a cooperation

between Diehl BGT Defence GmbH & Co. KG

and Rheinmetall Waffe Munition GmbH.
