THE EXTENT OF PEATLAND AND PEATLAND RESTORATION IN INDONESIA
WHAT IS PRIMS?PRIMS, Peatlands Restoration and Information Monitoring System, is an online platform that provides data and most recent progress of restoration in BRG priority provinces. The platform also enables users to monitor restoration activities. National and sub-national government, subnational peatland restoration team, restoration implementation actors, local CSOs, and private sector can access restoration planning and implementation, monitor restoration areas, monitor hotspots in peatland, identify degradation in restoration targeted areas.
WHY PRIMS?TO TRACK RESTORATION PROGRESS BY MULTIPLE STAKEHOLDERS IN 7 PRIORITY PROVINCES Restoration activities such as rewetting, revegetation and revitalization are conducted by multiple stakeholders, including the national and sub-national government, private sectors, CSOs and local community. Such intervention is critical to manage peatland’s hydrological as a way to mitigate peatlands degradation and peat fires. The platform enables governments to monitor restoration implementation progres to identify interventions that require improvements as well as to coordinate with the stakeholders to ensure that such progress is made consistently.
TO DETECT DEGRADATION ON PEATLAND Government can detect degradation in targeted peat restoration area, the opening of new canals in peat, and hotspots in peat areas. Therefore, appropriate corrective actions can be rapidly taken by relevance parties.
TO MEASURE RESTORATION IMPACTIndicators for peatlands monitoring for climate impact are: vegetation cover and change through optical satellites; peatlands hotspots observation; ground water level or subsidence rate through field measurements; as well as soil moisture and subsidence rates utilizing radar satellites.

WHO WILL BENEFIT FROM PRIMS?
National and sub-national government, peat restoration regional team,
restoration actors, local CSOs, and private sectors can access information on restoration and implementation, as
well as monitor restoration areas.
BRG and related ministries will be able to identify where clearing in intact
peat forest happening, the opening of new peat canals, and hotspots. Further, government can take
immediate actions to the perpetrators.
Companies can identify whether their areas belong to the protected
or utilization peat function, and subsequently can develop correct management and restoration plan.
Public can help monitor clearing in peat forest and hot spot, then
report it to related ministries and law enforcement.
