History of the Time At the particular time of this speech, the country was not

involved in any political wars with any other countries. The Unites States were actually in peace talks with Japan at the time of the attack. After the attack however, The U.S entered WWII.

Summary of the Speech This speech, given by President Roosevelt on December 8,

1941, was to announce to the nation the attack by Japanese air and naval forces on the island on Hawaii. Hawaii was not a part of the U.S at the time but it was an ally to the nation and a fleet of the U.S naval forces where station in Pearl Harbor. The president was extremely angered by the attack on Pearl Harbor. President Roosevelt calls the country to action by saying that the country had already formed their opinions and that as commander in chief, he has directed that all measures be taken in their defense.

Analysis Continued Plain Folks-I believe that I interpret the will of the Congress

and of the people when I assert that we will not only defend ourselves to the uttermost, but will make it very certain that this form of treachery shall never again endanger us.

Appeal to emotion- With confidence in our armed forces, with the unbounding determination of our people, we will gain the inevitable triumph so help us God

My Reaction to the Speech This speech strongly motivated me. I believe that if this

speech could influence me as strongly as it did, fifty years later, then it must have greatly influenced the people at the time. I am in favor of the Presidents view because I too oppose any attacks on our country and I think we should defend our selves
