Glen Gibbs | Peak Sports

There are two ways to look at the Kent Lewis-led Powell River Kings of the last couple of years.

The glass-half-empty critics might say “well, sure they won lots of games but couldn’t win the big one when it counted.” The glass-half-full optimists are pointing to the benefits of a winning program and the team that, to date, has been so successful.

The reality is the Kings have been ranked at the top of the Canadian Junior A Hockey poll more than once this year and they’ve gained that recognition with very impres-sive numbers midway through the schedule.

They currently sit on top of the BCHL (BC Hockey League) stand-ings with a record of 30-6-3-2 and, much to the chagrin of their oppo-nents, are as good on the road as they are at home. They are 18-3-0-1 at Hap Parker Arena but fiercely proud of their 12-3-3-1 record on the road and also that they haven’t lost back-to-back league games this year.

Their success was achieved through hard work, discipline and unselfish teamwork that has only given up 71 goals in 41 games. The stingy 1.73 team goals against av-erage is on pace to break the league record set by Trail Smoke Eaters in 1999-2000 with a total of 155 in 60 games.

These numbers didn’t happen by accident and recently Coach Kent Lewis talked about his program.

Q: You’ve always been a propo-nent of building a team from the goaltender out and it looks like you’ve got it this year.

KL: I knew we were going to be strong in terms of our depth with our recruiting and what we had coming back. The kids who came back really benefitted from what they learned last year with the amount of games in which they

had to deal with adversity. On de-fence, veterans like Jason Yee with two big finals and newcomers like [Chris] Williams, [Jon] Jutzi and [Craig] Dalrymple all have good size, good mobility with a lot of upside and good character. We knew we were going to be seven deep and we knew there were go-ing to be some challenges but we also knew this group was deeper than last year.

Q: Your defensive stats point to a trap system. Is that your style?

KL: We are not a trap team. Hockey is really like driving a vehi-cle. You enjoy driving, sometimes fast if that permits, but you’ve also got to be aware defensively, oth-erwise you’re going to get killed on the highway. In hockey we

want to play wide open, offensive hockey but if we’re not aware de-fensively at all times we’re going to get scored on. I don’t know if that makes sense for people but you have to play with awareness and you have to play well defensively to win. There is a responsibility that comes with playing here and that’s being good at both ends of the arena.

Q: The buzz around the league is your size on defence. Was that your recruiting focus?

KL: No, we went looking for the best people. Not just players, not just size but the best person. We take a lot of time in our recruiting to make sure that we sit down with almost every one of the recruits we bring in and meet them. In ad-

dition to our defence, don’t forget there’s also having a responsible forward group—low forwards, two of them in the defensive zone and having a group that aren’t going to give up outnumbered rushes, which comes from having a re-sponsible high forward.

Q: Success has brought recogni-tion for both the team and players this year. How do you want them to deal with that?

KL: We’ve had a lot of smoke blown up our rears. We’ve had a lot of people bring this stuff up. We don’t pay attention to it and we’ve got to go out and just be rewarded for good effort. All of a sudden you realize that “holy smokes, we’ve just strung eight games together.”

You don’t get caught up in it. You

just go out and go to work and let the results come from doing the right things every day. The best players on the best teams don’t get caught up in the individual stuff, they just go to work. Our regular season is about that–going to work, getting better all the time and not getting caught up in the hoopla.

Q: But hoopla means you’re successful.

KL: Yeah, you’ve got to be happy with the way things have gone. I’m not a negative person but you just have to keep working hard. We work hard in practice, we work hard to bring the right kids into the system and you go to work. We’re not doing anything special–we’re going out and playing hard.

Q: Is that the hardest part of

Kings’ program brings results

building a program? Finding play-ers who want to buy in?

KL: Being here for four years I’ve obviously been able to attract the right type of people. When I first came on board that wasn’t the case and we weren’t able to at-tract the Powell River King that we wanted. Only through the success of the last few years have we been able to do that. Now we’re getting the guys who really know about the program and other guys have paved the way for that. They know they are going to get a chance to get better, a chance to get to the next level and you’re going to have a great place to play. That comes from our billets, our town and this is a good place to play.

Q: We’re two thirds of the way through this season. Give us your take on the first 40 games and the next 20.

KL: A lot of guys struggled ear-ly. I don’t know if you want to call it the sophomore jinx but I think they thought it was going to be easier and it’s not easier, it’s hard-er. The first 20 are easier than the next 20 and now we’re into the final 20. It becomes even more fun and tougher. We haven’t seen the best of this club. We haven’t seen where we’ve had to really dig down and this is where we’re go-ing to start to see that and it’s go-ing to be fun.

Q: Special teams are such a big part of the game today. You lead the penalty-killing category but lag on the powerplay. Do we have the horses we need to be successful?

KL: It’s being consistent and being focused. I would say over the last five games our power-play has shown a lot of improve-ment and is getting a lot better. That’s going to be our focus down the stretch, that it improves and has more urgency. I believe that we have everything and it’s just a matter of executing. I like my horses.

Q: Speaking of horses, are we in a position to throw everything we have at a big run this year?

KL: You build a program. With each year you enjoy the ride of that year but it’s a 24/seven re-cruiting thing and we’ve been recruiting since September for next year’s club. That’s what we do. You don’t build for a year, you build for the best team every year and that will be no different next year. We have a balance and we always have a nucleus back and we’ll have that next year. This is what a program is about.

It’s also about support and with the Kings about to embark on what might be their most suc-cessful season ever, there is still a lot of room on the bandwagon and plenty of hockey left for fans to get excited about.

Niddery helps recruit teammatesThree strong Kings add substance to Buckeyes’ future

Josh Statham | Peak Contributor

A trio of Powell River Kings have earned scholar-ships to Ohio State, whose Buckeyes form one of the premiere programs of the Big Ten Conference in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA).

L e ading s corer C h ad Niddery announced his commitment to the program October 15, defencemen Justin Dasilva and Craig Dalrymple would follow in the weeks to come.

O hio S tate ’s ho cke y program began in 1963 and won the inaugural CCHA Men’s Ice Hockey Tournament in 1972. Buckeyes had their first and only National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Frozen Four appearance in 1998, and made the Division One Tournament the following season. They appeared in the NCAA

Postseason Tournament three consecutive seasons from 2003-2005, a streak which included the school’s second CCHA Post Season

Tournament Championship. The team last qualified for postseason play in 2009 and has since seen a coach-ing change. Former National

Hockey League player Mark Osiecki has replaced long-time bench boss John Markell.

“That’s okay to me,” Niddery says. “I was part of a big turnaround in Powell River, so it’d be cool to do it over again in four years with the Buckeyes.”

Niddery has contributed to the reconstruction of the once proud Buckeyes’ pro-gram by helping to recruit Dalrymple and Dasilva. Efforts included multiple visits from members of the Buckeyes’ coaching staff and a recruiting trip which included a tour of the facili-ties, meeting the team and a telephone conversation with Minnesota Wild forward Chuck Kobasew.

“I can’t even describe it. It was so phenomenal; the facilities, the school is so prestigious it was incred-ible,” Niddery explains. “They show you the arena, the dressing room, the gym, the football stadium which is absolutely mas-sive. You get to hang out

with the team, get a feel for the place, and they take you for a nice dinner.

“They’re a Big Ten school. They’re in a good division, a

good conference for NCAA. This is something you al-ways dream of, being a part of a good hockey program.”

Buckeyes is attributed by some to its state tree, the Ohio Buckeye. Another popular explanation is the First Nation’s name for one of Marietta, Ohio’s found-ing fathers Ebenezer Sproat to whom the indigenous population gave the name Hetuck. It means Eye of the Buck Deer—a name given due to Sproat’s “tall and commanding presence.”

King’s defencemen Justin Dasilva (six foot five inch-es, 215 pounds) and Craig Dalrymple (six foot four inches, 205 pounds) aim to be a commanding presence on the Buckeyes’ back end for years to come.

Dasilva had originally committed to College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts in the Eastern Collegiate Hockey Association but was wooed by the Buckeyes after a recruiting trip that was capped off with a meet-ing with his hockey hero, Philadelphia Flyer’s captain Chris Pronger.

Three of the Buckeyes’ starting defencemen from this season are in their se-nior years, so Dasilva looks to be factoring into the

immediate plans as he is pledged for the 2011-2012 season. Dalrymple and his cannonading shot will have another year of development with the Kings before don-ning the crimson and grey of Ohio State University in 2012-2013.

The three Kings will join former BCHLers Travis Statchuk, Cory Schneider,

Curtis Gedig, Devon Krogh and Alex Szczechura . Buckeyes’ alumni currently in the NHL include David Steckel of the Washington Capitals, former Vancouver Canucks’ first-round pick R.J. Umberger, Canucks’ as-sistant captain Ryan Kesler and former Penticton Vees’ Zac Dalpe who recently re-corded his first NHL goal.

Off-season regimen pays off for duo

Josh Statham | Peak Contributor

Powell River Kings started the 2010-2011 season with a talent-laden roster, the product of excel-lent recruiting and a strong return-ing core of players from last year’s Coastal Conference Champion team. Now over 40 games into the year, they are ranked among the top teams in the Canadian Junior Hockey League. The change from playoff contender to RBC Cup fa-vourite involved a shift from talent to determination in early October.

Identical twin brothers Bond and Brendon Hawryluk of Nampa, Alberta, joined Powell River Kings on a tryout basis as the team looked to improve its depth forwards. They debuted October 8 in a home game against Quesnel Millionaires, a team they had been affiliated with last season. The duo combined for two goals and an assist in a 7-2 routing of the interior rival. Since then the Kings have posted a record of 24-3-3-2 as Bond and Brendon have become permanent fixtures on a line replacing young prospects Ryan Elliot and Nick Indelicato.

Offensively, the twins have pro-

duced only five points in the 23 games they’ve played since their debut, but they have given oppos-ing teams nightmares trying to match the Kings. Their biggest as-set is the ability to win puck battles and rag the puck along the boards in the offensive zone, wearing down defences. Although the cur-rent offensive numbers aren’t stel-lar yet, the Hawryluk twins have a

history of being scoring leaders.“We tied for the scoring lead in

the Peace [River] League in our last year of midget,” says Bond, two minutes the elder of younger brother Brendon.

After dominating Northern Alberta minor hockey, the twins played a handful of games in Quesnel last season. They spent the majority of the season with

Fernie Ghostriders of Kootenay International Junior Hockey League, combining for 92 points in 81 games.

After starring in Junior B ranks, the Hawryluks were dedicated to making a return to Junior A hockey and spent the off-season working on the family grain farm between Nampa and Peace River.

“We hit the gym pretty hard, and shot a lot of pucks,” says Bond of the twins’ off-season regimen. “There’s no ice up there during the summer. You’d have to go five hours to Edmonton to find ice, so we spent a lot of time running and biking and playing other sports.”

Bond has always been a winger but Brendon played defence until a coach paired them offensively in peewee. After playing wing, Brendon would eventually develop into a centre. They’ve played with a number of different line mates this season but have looked particular-ly dangerous with newly acquired Justin Bardarson, former captain of the now-defunct Williams Lake Timberwolves. Bardarson posted 42 points in 2009-2010 and the trio has been relied on to win key offensive zone faceoffs since team-ing up.

“We’ve played with [Klay] Kachur

too. Pretty well anyone who has played with us just goes to the net and we work our cycle game in the corner,” says Bond.

BC hockey fans are familiar with the ability of the twins to connect on passing plays in the offensive zone, resembling twins Daniel and Henrik Sedin’s deft playmak-ing ability since being drafted by Vancouver Canucks in 1999. The Hawryluks don’t necessarily be-lieve in twin telepathy as it applies to hockey at least.

“We’ve just played together for so long we get used to each other,” Bond explains. “If we’re in trouble we throw it behind the net or be-hind us, so it’s kind of a system.”

With Bardarson now in the mix, and the October return of Steven Schmidt to the line-up, the Kings are hard for opposing coaches to match-up against with four strong lines that bring scoring, forecheck-ing and defensive ability to exceed in all facets of the game.

With the departure of key 20-year-old forwards Chad Niddery, Matt Garbowsky and Andrew Pettitt fol-lowing this season, it’s comforting for Kings’ coaching staff and fans to watch the Hawryluk brothers develop as they hope to be back for their senior season.

Threat with twists and turns

TWO BETTER THAN ONE: Twin brothers Brendan [left] and Bond Hawryluk of Nampa, Alberta have become permanent fixtures on the Powell River Kings’ roster.
