Bakewell @ Christmas

Bakewell at Christmas

One of the prettiest places to go at Christmas in the Peak District has undoubtedly got to be Bakewell. Full of Christmas cheer and festive spirit, this magical place is buzzing with plenty of shops open late, cafes and restaurants serving up delicious homemade festive treats and a generally feel good Christmas vibe, warming the cockles of even the grumpiest Scrooge!

The Christmas weekend event has grown in popularity and is a firm fixture in Bakewell’s annual events calendar. This year’s Christmas weekend will coincide with the monthly

Bakewell farmers market, the last weekend of November, which has a packed programme of live music and street entertainment.

The Santa’s grotto is always a must and the specially selected Christmas market stall holders will continue to trade their wares throughout the whole weekend. Packed full of

unusual gifts and locally handmade goods, the children’s traditional carousel will operate through the event, giving you a chance to sip some of the lovely mulled wine on offer and mince pies to munch on while keeping an eye on the children.

Nestled within the beautiful streets and marketplace, the traditional English Christmas market is interspersed with cultural entertainment and a relaxed atmosphere. With the

Bakewell Christmas lights switched on at dusk on 29 November, the smell of food, wine and spirit drift through the cobbles.

So many gift ideas as well as street theatre and live music to entertain, all local community led programmes. Bakewell Silver band will be playing traditional carols and

the British Legion bikers and Tideswell singers will bring a feeling of cheer and goodwill. Even Santa’s reindeer will be making an appearance on Sunday.

Also this year, as if that all isn’t enough, there will be a mini market at The Manners, a handsome stone built pub, just a few minutes walk from the town centre. Here you will

find traders selling diverse wares such as tweed, socks and gloves, wines and spirits as well as, hot cider will be served to the soothing sounds from the Walker Bros Jazz Trio. There is also a very special visit from the Frozen Princesses With free entry to all the festivities; it’s a must to put on the calendar.

December, which has over 40 stalls of home-made food and gifts along with other goodies to buy.

So why not begin your Christmas shopping in style, surrounded by charm, character and a very traditional Christmas feel. Visit Bakewell this year, to get all your Christmas

inspiration.

A Family run nursery – it really makes a difference!

Being a small independent family run garden centre is a challenging job, but one which the team at Calver Sough nurseries know is also a very rewarding one. Providing quality plants since 1983, they pride themselves on trying to source mainly English grown plants which are suitable for the Peak District environment. They certainly know their stuff!

Page 15: Peak district online 03

The garden centre has become renowned in the area for constantly providing a wide selec-tion of plants and their informed, knowledgeable and friendly staff are always on hand to help you make the right choice. The team are focusing on the declining bee population, and as of this year, they’ve made it much easier for their customers to do their bit to help, by highlight-ing bee friendly plants. Simply look for the ‘Bee friendly’ logo and help the environment and keep bees in the Peak District.

There is so much more to discover at Calver, including a fabulous new range of giftware, greetings cards, Weleda, Wax Lyrical and Sheffield Honey. A fantastic gift shop has a great selection of wooden children’s toys, children’s garden tools, a comprehensive pet depart-ment, as well as all the usual garden tools and sundries you’d expect from a well stocked garden centre.

In between shopping for English grown Poinsettias, Cyclamen, Holly wreaths, houseplants and planted gift arrangements, why not make the most of your visit by relaxing in our Garden Room Café. Delicious treats, lunches, homemade cakes and more, all served in cosy wel-coming surroundings. All the food is carefully prepared on the premises by expert chefs and there is a delicious mouth watering new seasonal menu on offer too.

A superb selection of festive decorations and Christmas lights are displayed. Calver Sough Garden Centre is a fantastic place to get more than a few Christmas presents sorted at the same time as the Christmas tree shopping. There are gifts and tools for gardeners galore available from the ever changing and extensively stocked gift department, which means that all members of the family are catered for this holiday season.

As a very generous gift from them to you this December, Calver Sough Garden Centre and Nursery are providing a very generous £50 gift voucher to spend in shop and a free lunch for 2.
