My math teachers always told me to show my work So here is how we get to $3309 million of cap space this summer

The projected cap room is based off of an approximated $60 million cap number $331 reflects the Hawks cap room if

they release DeShawn Stevenson as expected retain Mike Scott and Shelvin Mack and extend qualifying offers to Jeff

Teague and Ivan Johnson It also takes into account the Hawks first round salaries

Prior to signing draft picks the Hawks would have $35266 in cap space So should they trade the picks that would

be the starting cap number and then you would subtract the incoming playerpicks salary from the $35266 number

If the Hawks retain and sign both first round picks they will cost $1617840 (17th) and $1536960 (18th) with the

rookie minimum for next year is 490180 So the two will be a combined $2174440 over the rookie minimums which

will count against the cap (minimum contracts do not count towards the cap) which when subtracted from their caproom makes the approximate cap number that can be used3309

Also the Hawks will be able to offer the $515 million mid-level exception should they reach the cap number The mid-

level exception is not additional cap space but is available for the Hawks to use and would not count towards their tax

bill should they stay under $64 million dollars in salary (The mid-level exception resets each season so Lou Williams

contract does not count as it this year)

While what the Hawks do this offseason is unknown what we know for sure is that they will be extremely active as theytry to fill roster spots utilize their four draft picks and spend $331 million in cap room Hopefully this rundown

provided some clarity on the situation as we move towards the off-season chaos
