Monthly Newsletter of Fredsville April 2013 From Pastor Lisa, Psalm 150 is by far my favorite Psalm! It goes like this…. Psalm 150 1 Praise the Lord! Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty firmament! 2 Praise him for his mighty deeds; praise him according to his surpassing greatness! 3 Praise him with trumpet sound; praise him with lute and harp! 4 Praise him with tambourine and dance; praise him with strings and pipe! 5 Praise him with clanging cymbals; praise him with loud clashing cymbals! 6 Let everything that breathes praise the Lord! Praise the Lord! It’s my favorite for so many reasons, not the least of which is that I love music and music is certainly mentioned in this Psalm. It is my favorite because it talks about the greatness of God, and God is most certainly great! It is my favorite because it is loud, after all there are loud clanging cymbals and trumpets mentioned! It is my favorite because it is upbeat and celebratory, after all it begins and ends with Hallelujah! Perhaps the greatest understatement of the year will be, “It has been a long winter!” And because it has been such a long winter, we are all ready for spring. We are ready to see the daffodils push through the thawing ground. We are ready for the warmth of the sun to finally break through the ice and snow and awake the earth worms below. And because it has been such a long winter, and Lent is tagged with winter, it almost seems as if Easter is extra special this year. How we have longed to sing Hallelujahs.

PEACEFUL TIDINGS! From Fredsville Evangelical Lutheran Church

Serving in Jesus’ name since March 1871

Blessed with heritage, vision for the future and peace in the present. Monthly Newsletter of Fredsville April 2013

From Pastor Lisa, Psalm 150 is by far my favorite Psalm! It goes like this…. Psalm 150 1Praise the Lord! Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty firmament! 2Praise him for his mighty deeds; praise him according to his surpassing greatness! 3Praise him with trumpet sound; praise him with lute and harp! 4Praise him with tambourine and dance; praise him with strings and pipe! 5Praise him with clanging cymbals; praise him with loud clashing cymbals! 6Let everything that breathes praise the Lord!

How we have longed to be joyful! And because we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord and Savior, we have every right to be joyful! Christ has won the Final Battle! Christ has triumphed! Christ is Risen and we have been saved! So shout! Sing! Sound the cymbals! Praise the Lord! It is Easter and Christ has risen! He has risen indeed! Hallelujah!

Pastor Lisa

Keep them in your prayers

Jerry Christensen, Claudia Hamilton, Jill Vandehaar-Hansen, Carol & Emmett Watson, Vern Petersen, Sandy Party,

Mildred Sloth, Emly Steege, Alma Heath, Jack Mommer, Steven Anderson, Kelly Smith, Vernon Cordes, Holly Kruger, Ashley Olson, Dennis Craig, Daniel Olson, and Neal Thuesen.

Please let Pastor Lisa at 243-8136, Intern Peter at 989-9049 or the

church office at 989-2065 know if you are going to be in the hospital. This will insure prayer and visitation.

Because of a “Health Information Privacy” rule, hospitals cannot contact the church when members are hospitalized.

Urgent!

• 1 bath towel, • 1 wash cloth, body wash, • shampoo & conditioner, • toothbrush & toothpaste, • solid deodorant.

Other optional ideas are dental floss, chapstick, lipgloss, and a comb or brush.

Keep your eyes open for good used fishing tackle, poles, etc. The Social Ministry Committee is sponsoring a Tackle Drive for the State Training School for Boys in Eldora. The gear will be used by the chaplain as he teaches the boys about the patience and self reliance of fishing. Help be a “fisher of men” and give these young men a second chance. New items also welcome. Place your contributions in the blue tub marked “Tackle Drive”.

"The Social Ministry Committee would like to thank the

Fredsville Congregation for their generous response to the additional offering taken the fourth Sunday of the month for the Northeastern Iowa Synod Malaria Campaign. The $542.97 donated will purchase 54 mosquito nets. One net equals one life saved from the bites of mosquitoes which carry the malaria parasitic infection."

World Relief Needs requested by Quilting Ladies For layettes: Full size bars of wrapped bath soap Sleepers, preferably without feet Infant and toddler socks Diaper/safety pins Dark colored hand towels Gently used blankets For quilting: Used sheets, used drapes etc. When you bring your donated items to church please put them on a back table in the Fellowship Hall. Q & A April 2013

Jacque Bakker Qualifies for the Boston Marathon

I would like to thank LuAnn Jones for giving me the idea of interviewing Jacque for this month’s Q & A. – Sue Green Q: When is the Boston Marathon? A: The Boston Marathon is being held this year on Monday, April 15. It has occurred every year since 1897 to celebrate Patriots’ Day. Q: How do you qualify for the Boston Marathon? A: Qualifying times are based on age and gender. In 2008, the qualifying time was 4 hours and I ran a 3:58:54. The qualifying times have since become more stringent. For this year’s marathon, I needed to run a 3:55 or faster to qualify. I ran a 3:54:19. However, even if you meet the qualifying time, it does not guarantee that you will be a participant. Only 25,000 runners will be accepted. The fastest runners are accepted first. It was a very exciting Sunday afternoon when I saw my name on the Boston Marathon website listed as a participant. Q: Why did you want to run the Boston Marathon? A: I took up running when Mallory was four. Before that, you would not have considered me a “runner”. I ran my first marathon in 2002 (the Marathon to Marathon in western Iowa) and after that, I put “running the Boston Marathon” on my “Bucket List”. It took me six marathons (Chicago Marathon – 3x, Des Moines Marathon – 2x and Grandma’s Marathon in Duluth) to cut 50 minutes off of my first marathon time to qualify for the Boston Marathon. Q: When did you qualify? A: I first qualified and was a listed participant for the 2010 Boston Marathon after running the IMT Des Moines Marathon on October 19, 2008. My opportunity to run it disappeared when I was diagnosed with breast cancer on November 25, 2009 and started my cancer treatments on January 6 of 2010. These treatments lasted for the next 14 months. I was told by my oncologist not to train for the Boston Marathon during

Page 5: PEACEFUL TIDINGS! - Fredsville Lutheran · PEACEFUL TIDINGS! From Fredsville Evangelical Lutheran Church ... Daniel Olson, and Neal Thuesen. Please let Pastor Lisa at 243 -8136, Intern

5

my treatments. However, he did want me to continue exercising. After my treatments were over, I began my quest to requalifying for the Boston Marathon which I did on October 16, 2011 at the IMT Des Moines Marathon (the same marathon that I qualified at the first time.) Q: What have you gained from qualifying for the Boston Marathon? A: I could not have qualified for the Boston Marathon without my faith, my family and my friends. I have not faced any of these challenges alone: first qualifying for the Boston Marathon, then being diagnosed with breast cancer, then BEATING breast cancer, then running faster to requalifying, to now running the Boston Marathon in 2013. You find that you have strength you never knew you had. You have to Believe to Accomplish. My “mantra” when I run a marathon is “my form is good, my legs are strong, and God is with me all along.” This gives me focus, a great pace and strength. I feel so blessed! I am not crossing the finish line alone. It is with my faith, my family and my friends.

Good luck Jacque! The prayers of the Fredsville Congregation will be with you for your race and also for your family’s safe travels.

After we know the projected cost of Phase III, the congregation will vote on whether to proceed with the project. This spring, join congregations from across the nation by hosting a “Buck- a-Chick” sale. For $1.00 you can purchase and decorate a chick. Your gift of a chick makes a world of difference. It provides a family in need with eggs to eat and sell at the market. With this gift you can help a family escape hunger for good.

Holly will be selling assorted cards for various occasions Sunday April 28th

April Preventing child abuse and neglect Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” – Matthew 19:13-15 Truly, the kingdom of heaven belongs to little children. Unfortunately, children across Iowa are suffering from abuse. In 2011, 11,747 children in Iowa were abused through physical abuse, sexual abuse or though the denial of critical care, such as providing adequate food, shelter or clothing. Over 50% of these victims were under the age of six. The abuse of even one child is too many. Lutheran Services in Iowa (LSI) works to prevent child abuse and neglect through parent education, intervention and support and helps children of abuse heal and find hope. Through early childhood and family services LSI helps stop abuse before it starts, and our Bremwood and Beloit Residential Treatment Centers empower children of abuse so that they may resolve their past and look forward to a bright future. The support of our partner congregations allows LSI to maintain these important programs for the children of Iowa. Thank you for being an important partner in our mission of service to all.
