LESSONS CONSIST OF SHORT DIALOGS AND NUMEROUS DRILLSTO TEACH THE PRONUNCIATION PATTERNS AND GRAMMAR POINTS.INSTRUCTIONS ARE GIVEN TO THE TEACHER FOR CONDUCTING THEDRILLS AND FOR INCLUDING SUPPLEMENTARY MATERIAL SUCH ASSONGS. These Bikol lessons - covering four to five hours per lesson - aremeant for 'experienced teachers familiar with the new ideas of foreignlanguage,teaching. It's assumed that anyone else will not know how tomake proper use of these materials.
For the experienced, some random suggestions:
Pace: The pace of the class should be brisk, lively. During dialoguesand drills students should be expected to respond without pausing tothink; during conversation and role-playing the pace should be relaxed.Class should never drag, students should be kept on their toes.
Variety,: There aid be a variety of activities, perhaps no single kind tolast more than seven minutes. horn a drill one may go into conversation;liven the pace by a quick review of the d ialogue, brisk pronunciationpractice, back to at drill, grammar, conversation, role-playing, a reading,etc. provided there is a logical sequencing of the activities. It is notnecessary that the lesson items be followed one after another, one completedbefore the other is begun - =aide you know what you are doing.
latilaaNIMP The teacher's spoken Bikol should be at all times naturalin speed, intonation, and vocabulary (colloquial,' column words); the classshould especially try to acheive a natural intonation based on the teacher'smodel. any utterance too long to be repeated should be starter! from theskazimmbammoddat last part of the utterance,saut building towards thefront by adding on natural units (yam the other way around).
,Creativity,: The teacher has the responsibility to revise the lessons whenadvantageous, to create exercises where there are gaps, to create as manychallenges for successful comnunicatiln as can be met by the class.as much as possible every set of drills should be followed immediatelyby informal questions practicing the pattern under focupsDuring role-playing, unexpected, playful questions and responses shouldbe employed by both teacher and class to stimulate thoughtful use of thelanguage. Avoid an excess of commonplace, bland languvge.The teacher is responsible for creating review exercises each day; theseshould be informal, quest ions - responses. The more important structures(the ,verbs and their affixes) must be reviewed censtantly.
Keepy a steady hand and a pleasant manners anticipate grammatical difficultiesand be prepared to answer questions efficiently, avoid inhibiting studentsby overcorrecting. Make the students work har3 for each hour of class,so that they may leave class with the positive feeling of having Eu.:conpli.shedsomething.

PoLivattis The teacher, in creating - apart from the lessons as they noware . ptimulating situations far the students to develop their spokenStandard Bikol, should make use of a pot pourri of items having to dowith Bikols songs, poems* transportation schedules (bus, train, plane,boat)* riddles, jokes, legends, folktales, etc. menus, recipes, popularidioms. Some of these might be incorporated into situations, e.g.transportation schedules in a How .do-l-getoto... and Vhen-does-theAus-leave?.situation. The wellwknown songs should of course be learned.

A radio broadcaster, armed only with a small,portable tape-recorder and plain microphone,interviews a group of recently arrived
Peace Corps Volunteers. The tape is to be
done entirely in Bikol, since it is hopedthat many barrio people unfamiliar with either
English or the Peace Corps will listen in tothe locally broadcast program.
The teacher takes the part of the radio interviewer,
asks the Volunteers specific questions about their
training, some autobiographical questions, what
their mission is, etc.
