Senate Foreign Relations Committee, escorting a battered figure on crutches (drawn as a rolled up scroll and labeled "Peace Treaty") out of a room labeled "Operating Room, Senate Committee on Foreign Relations." Conservative senators had grave concerns over the provisions of the Treaty of Versailes that ended the first World War and provided for the establishment of the League of Nations. When the Senate Foreign Relations Committee finally reported the Treaty to the full Senate on September 10, they included 45 amendments and reservations. President Wilson refused to accept any of the reservations and the Treaty was eventually rejected on November 19, 1919.

Charles G. Dawes standing outside an open window, puffing clouds of smoke from his pipe. A sign reads "League of Nations Now in Session." In the fall of 1931, the Council of the League of Nations met in emergency session in Paris to try to resolve the Manchurian Crisis. Dawes was sent to represent the United States government, but because the U.S. did not belong to the League, he conducted his negotiations behind the scenes.

Summary: Eight panel editorial cartoon showing a man holding a newspaper and telling his wife that the rise of Hitler and the progress towards war are aberrations; he begins by telling her that "now that he's chancellor the responsibility will have a restraining influence on him" and concludes seven years later with "the war will stay deadlocked and he'll be starved out." Throughout the eight panel strip, his wife's fashions keep abreast of the times.
