ADEDICATED Port Elizabeth
teacher Amanda Ntsumpa hasreceived national recognition ina competition aimed at award-ing teachers who make a differ-
ence.
Ntsumpa, who is principal of VukanibantuPrimary School in NU2 Motherwell, came inthird place in theTeachers forChangeAwardbecause of her tireless efforts in making a dif-ference in the lives of children coming froma poor background.
“I was voted asnumber three inthe country out of12 teachers thatmake a differencein different catego-ries in education,”said Ntsumpaproudly, addingthat she was verygrateful to her co-lleague, ThenjiweAlbia, who nomi-nated her after see-ing an advert inDrum Magazinelate last year.
Asked what shedoes to make a dif-ference, Ntsumpa said, “First, I am a teach-ing principal. I don’t only manage the schooland be the link with government depart-ments and the outside world, I go to class andteach as well.”
Before the Department of Education in thedistrict recently started providing transport,
Ntsumpa would ensure that her learners areable to travel to school.
She would leave home in Sherwood earlyin the morning and ferry about 100 of her pu-pils staying in the impoverished NU29 inMotherwell on her bakkie to school and bringthem back after school, every day of theweek.
Through her efforts, there is a healthy rela-tionship between her school, local businessand the surrounding community.
“I interact with local businesses to assistin the improvement of the school and to spon-sor its events,” said Ntsumpa.
She also took theparental componentof the School Govern-ing Body (SGB) fortraining and throughher efforts the par-ents of the schooltake charge of theirchildren’s educa-tion.
This has paid off forNtsumpa, because, todate, she and her pu-pils have received 21iPads (one for person-al use), an OverheadProjector and laptopsfrom iSchool Africa,a company that sup-ports excellence in
education through technological advance-ment.
“The iSchool Africa Company visits PortElizabeth every quarter to download curricu-lum focused apps, and now my children excelin education, especially in English,” a glow-ing Ntsumpa said.

THE volatile situation in the Port Elizabethtownships was reported as normal again onThursday last week. This, after days in whichSomali national owned spaza shops were at-tacked, looted and destroyed by residents.
This started after an alleged fatal shootingof a customer by a Somali shop owner in YayaStreet in New Brighton, allegedly after an ar-gument about airtime the customer bought.
The Somali was arrested but later releasedowing to lack of evidence.
Local leaders from all spheres of life includ-ing the SAPS, CPF and the Church met theSomali National Association, the United Na-tions High Commissioner for Refugees (UNH-CR) and the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro Coun-cillors and Disaster Management officials atthe Jarman Hall in Korsten on Thursday tocall the city to order.
“Several spaza shops re-opened for busi-ness on Thursday and Friday,” said provin-
cial police spokesperson Brigadier MarindaMills.
She added that the engagement with rep-resentatives from foreign national struc-tures, local authorities, community struc-tures, CPFs and other role-players wouldcontinue.
According to Brig. Mills focus would be puton sensitising the public through awarenesscampaigns at schools and community centres.
Brig. Mills commended members of thecommunity who assisted the police to arrestthree men for looting and stealing a fridgefrom a Somali spaza shop in Kwazakhele lastweek.
“We are happy that things are getting backto normal. We want order in our communi-ties,” said Idamasa president Bishop SandileJika.
He said, “This experience of the past weekmust also warn us never to use the gun tosolve problems. And, that poverty causes a lotof anger among people especially the youth. These things must be addressed.”

RETIRED head master and Department ofEducation District Director, Elliot Kani, believesOutcomesBasedEducation (OBE)was a failed attempt at improving educa-tion in this country.
Speaking at the farewell function offormer colleague and Siyaphambili PublicPrimarySchool principalGcinumziNqwe-ni, Kani said the OBE Curriculum, whichwas brought about in education in 1996, fit-ted former Model C schools better becauseof a better pupil-teacher ratio.Kani, who is a former principal at
Loyiso High School in Zwide and GraaffReinet District head, said former ModelC schools had resources and fewer pupilsin a class which made it easy for teachersto engage with it, unlike in townshipschools where a teacher would face up to
70 pupils in one class. The introduction of Revised Curriculum
Statements, otherwise known as RCS, in2000 brought hope, according to Kani. Thisbrought about new terminology and lessassessment and paper-work for teachers -something that could enable teachers tohave more contact teaching time.In 2011 South Africa returned back to
teaching subjects instead of LearningAreas (LAs) and the subjects were alsodropped to six instead of the nine LAs.Kani said Caps was introduced in 2011
without training teachers but it was in theAnnual National Assessment (ANA) thathe thought something positive is going tocome out of the education system.“ThisANAmust be followed to the letter
in order for it to provide our pupils withimproved, quality education where thethree Rs, i.e. Reading, Writing and Arith-metic takes place,” said Kani.

RETIRED Siyaphambili Primary Schoolprincipal Gcinumzi Nqweni of Mother-well, will use the time he now has availableto catch up with his passion, InformationTechnology (IT), because, at the ripe ageof 65 years, he says he still has a lot tolearn.
Nqweni said this during his farewellfunction held at the NU2 Motherwell Com-munity Hall last Wednesday after 26 years
as the head of Siyaphambili, the first Jun-ior Secondary School that was built inMotherwell during the turbulent 1980s.The event was attended by members of
his family, including his wife Dr ZinziswaNqweni, current headmaster ThamsanqaMatutu, school management, members ofstaff, members of the SGB, parents, Educa-tion Department officials as well as enthu-siastic past and present pupils. Also among the invited guests were Nq-
weni’s colleague and former Graaff-Rei-nett Education District Director Elliot Ka-
ni, EDO Chris Muller and SADTU repre-sentative Bukiwe Ralane.Nqweni who is armed with BA (Unisa)

ty Principal at the school, Nqweni steeredthe ship during hard times in Motherwellduring the 1980s and can pride himself onhaving produced medical doctors, engi-neers and chief education specialists.
“On the first day of schooling, he wouldtell us: Unyak’ uphelile (It’s the year end)and that would encourage us to studyhard,” said pupil Naledi Gulwa.
Buyambo added that books and station-ery would be issued on the first day and thatNqweni ensured pupils wrote something.“It was hard in our time because of apart-
heid. But today we want our children to beeducated,” said former Biology teacherNqweni whose three children are all uni-versity graduates and in positions of au-thority in companies around the country.

More that 350 participants coming from al-most all the provinces of South Africa tookpart in theKata, Kumite andWeapons compe-tition.“But we’ve had less entries this year com-

the karate masters who taughthim the old traditional way ofthe game was overwhelming.Headded, “And, it is also good
to know that in South Africa weare very competitive accordingto old karate standards.”
Johnson prefers the old, traditional karatestyle to the modern day version. This winners will participate in a competi-
tion to be held in Vanderbijl Park in Johan-nesburg, Gauteng on October 24 for the selec-tion of the team to take part in internationalchampionships.Johnson has been involved in karate for
over 50 years now, most of which has beenspent teaching.According tohim, the sport is all about des-
