IT could take years to develop, but theAirports Company South Africa (AC-SA) wants to turn Nelson MandelaBay into a huge aerotropolis.
This was the message the companybrought to business leaders when they sha-
red their future plans for the Port Elizabethairport at a business breakfast, co-hosted bythe Nelson Mandela Bay business chamber.“We want to develop the cities around
each of our airports,” said Zinhle Ntanzi, as-sistant property manager for ACSA. “Theidea is to establish the airport as the centreof the development, while creating nodesand business opportunities for the rest of
the city.”In the Bay this plan won’t be a “five-year
concept”, Ntanzi added. “It is a long termplan that can take up to 20 years, but we alre-ady own land that will allow for develop-ment around the airport.”These planned developments include a
space of 1,5 hectares on Allister MillerDrive, which could be used for an office
block, vehicle showrooms and other retai-lers. Another piece of land has been set asidefor light industrial development, as well asdistribution and self-storage facilities.A third area of 6 hectares can be used for
manufacturing and construction compa-nies.

ARMED Forces Week has been off to a suc-cessful start as thousands of people visitedthePortElizabethharbourduring theweek-end to view theNavy’swarships and subma-rine.
Navy Spokesman Commander Greylingvan den Berg said he was overwhelmed bythe positive response they received duringthe weekend.“We had about 25 000 people at the harbour
this weekend. We were truly overwhelmedwith the positive reaction from the people ofPE and wewere also grateful that they decid-ed to spend their Valentine’s Day weekendwith us.“We have not received any complaints.
There were people who waited for hours toview the ships but theymentioned that itwasworth the wait,” van den Berg said.There will be fan parks held at the Kings
Beach area today until this comingweekend,with a largemilitary exhibition from8amun-til 5pm daily, except on February, 21, whenthe exhibition closes at 3pm.During the exhibition, the public can expe-
rience a range of military hardware, variousweapon systems, radar systems, armouredvehicles and artillery guns.The public will also be allowed to engage
with South African National Defence Force
(SANDF) members at these displays andclimb onto and into the various display vehi-cles.Thenight shooting eventwhich takesplace
tomorrow night, February 18, is expected tobe one of the highlights of Armed ForcesWeek.“The night shooting will be an absolute
highlight. There will be thousands of peopleattending and watching,” van den Berg said.Thenight shootingdemonstrationatKings
Beach starts at 7:30pm and will last for about40minutes. The demonstration will end witha ball of fire detonating on Kings Beach.“People should bring their picnic baskets
and chairs and come down to the KingsBeacharea or they canwatch thenight shoot-ing fromnearby restaurants; it will be a love-ly night out and something very different forPort Elizabeth,” van den Berg said.Themain event, Armed Forces Day, which
takes place on February 21, in Beach Road,will include a large military parade followedby a military capability demonstration.

The Queen for a Day initiative is anational project where a number ofgirls who are facing life-threateningillnesses, are treated to a day out oftheir hospital and medical environ-ment.Seven girls aged 13 to 18, arrived at
Protea Hotel Marine on Friday andwere treated to a mini-makeoverwhere each of the girls enjoyed unin-terrupted pampering which included
amake-upsession,inspirationalbeau-ty talk, manicure and pedicure.The girls also had a chance to walk
the red carpet where Mrs Port Eliza-beth 2015, Angelique Adcock, taughtthemhowtowalkwithconfidenceliketrue queens.With excitement on each of the
girls’ faces, they eachmade their waydown the red carpet and were readyfor their crowning ceremony wherethey were presented with a rose, sashand crown.The ceremony was followed by a
high tea to celebrate these brave girlsand commemorate the day. The girlsalso received a goodie bag to remem-ber their special day.Each girl was made to feel special
and this initiative allowed themadayout to socialise with other brave girlsand realise that they are not alone.
Reach for a Dream coordinator,Heather Mazomba, said the project isabout building confidence and self-es-teem of young girls. The aim of thiseventwastomakethegirls feelbeauti-ful and special.“QueenforaDayistomakethegirls

This is a love story of nomatter what, whentwo become one, nothing can separate them.I met my husband through a mutual friend
and although it was love at first sight, we didnot want to admit it. We started dating andfour months before our wedding my mother-in-law passed away from cancer.It was a sad day for my husband as both his
parents have passed on. We got married inMarch 2001 in Port Elizabeth.Unfortunately due to the sudden passing of
my mother-in-law a honeymoon was not anoption.Two years after our wedding we were told
having children of our own was not possible,but still we decided to stick together. Throughthe years we were faced with many trials andheartaches, but only by the grace of God ourlove just grew stronger.Almost thirteen years after we married we
were given the opportunity to adopt our beau-tiful son, but that also took us through a yearand six months of emotional and legal battlesto get the adoption finalised.We have a rule: on the 10th of each month
we thank each other and God for blessing usfor another month together.We might not buy expensive gifts for each
other, but it is the small things and thememo-ries, whichmoney cannot buy and no one cantake from you, which matters.Even after all we have been through as a
couple, I truly feel blessed and would do it allover again knowing I have a wonderful hus-band who would do anything for his familyand he always puts us first, no matter what.

THIS weekend sees Nelson Mandela Bayplay host to Africa’s oldest open waterswimming event when the SPAR RiverMile Festival takes place at Cannonville onthe Sunday’s River this Saturday and Sun-day between 8am and 5pm.
Having started in Redhouse in 1924 thiswill be the 92nd running of the River Milewith the event having evolved into a festi-val of sporting events which not only in-cludes the Mile swims for Men and Ladiesbut also a Double Mile, Disabled Mile, ahalf-mile and a kids across the river racefor those 12 years and underwho aren’t tak-ing part in the Mile events.Also included in the festival this week-
end is a 5km fun run, 10km MTB and 30MTB race.Following the conclusion of the EC Swim
Series on Sunday morning, the stand-outfavourite to capture both the double Mileand Men’s Mile titles has to be PearsonHigh School scholar Ian Venter whoclaimed both the 3km and 5kmNMBA openwater swimming titles over the past twoweekends.Also winning the OWS double at the EC

Jendamark Bellbuoy entries closingLate entries for next weekend’s epic 5km
Jendamark Bellbuoy Challenge sea swimcame into effect on Tuesday with just over80 swimmers from around the country hav-ing entered already. Given the preparationand water safety precautions taken for thisswim, no late entries are accepted after4pm on Thursday, February 25.
A full race briefing, meet and greet ses-sion for all participants takes place on Fri-day 26th from 6pm-7pm at News Cafe. Therace starts at 8.30am fromPollok Beach andis always a great spectacle as the swim-mers set off to round the nautical bellbuoypositioned 2.5km off Pollok Beach.Swimmers line up in one of two catego-
ries available for this event, the wetsuitcategory and the swimsuit category whichis based on the English channel swimwearruling.With Jendamark having put up R37 000
in prize money, expect some tough compe-tition.For the first time in the history of the
event, both categories carry equal prizemoney with the winners snatching R4 000each. Defending swimsuit champion By-ron Lockett has not registered for this yearbut defending wetsuit champion Ian Ven-ter has and will be hard to beat as he is inexceptional form this season having al-ready snatched the NMBA open waterswimming 3km and 5km titles this month.“It’s been great winning the two NMBA

CAYLA Seddon, Madibaz’ newest athletics re-cruit, started the year in the same way she fin-ished it – running fast!
The national junior champion in the 100mhurdles and 200m sprint caught the eye at theEP League Track & Field meeting that was host-ed by the university last weekend.
Running into a slight headwind, the 18-year-old Seddon set times of 12.23 and 14.37 in the100m sprint and 100m hurdles items respective-ly.
She topped these off with a workmanlike 24.82in the 200m, just 0.04 shy of her season’s best setin December.
The first-year sports management studentsaid her initial objective for the meeting was totarget the season’s bests, but that the conditionshad not played along.
“The wind was quite blustery and from thefront, so I’m extremely happy with my times.”
According to the speedster – who said shewanted to pursue a career involving somethingthat she was passionate about – training hadbeen quite demanding.
“We’re at it six days a week and we’re alter-nating between power, speed and enduranceworkouts while concentrating on technique.”Her programme also includes regular gym ses-sions.
She said she planned on peaking twice thisyear. “First I need to be in top shape for the US-
SA championships in April.“Then, if I have qualified, I’ll take a week’s
break and build towards the junior worldchamps in Poland in July. That’s the goal at themoment.”
Madibaz’ athletics manager Nellis Bothmawas full of praise after the meeting.
“Her speciality is the 100m hurdles and thatis all about technique. I think she’s on target toqualify for the world champs.”
While Seddon’s long-term goal is to impressthe national selectors, her immediate aim is theEastern Province Championships on February26 and 27.After that, she will travel to Stellen-bosch for the first Varsity Athletics meeting onMarch 4 before jetting off to the USSA Track &Field National Championships in Polokwane.
