THE Friendly City might have a new nameby the end of the year.

Applications for the names of Port Eliz-abeth, Uitenhage and even Port Elizabeth air-port to be changed, have been submitted to theEastern Cape geographical names committee,Zukile Jodwana, a member of the committee,confirmed.

Among the suggestions for new names areGqeberha for Port Elizabeth, and Garden Townor Qhagqiwa for Uitenhage. The Port Elizabeth

International Airport could also be renamed theSipho Hashe Airport.

These names will, however, not immediatelyappear on road signs and maps, Jodwana ex-plained.

“This is a lengthy process and can take up tosix months.

“We have received the application, but nowwehavetoholdpublicmeetingsinthecommuni-ties where residents can voice their opinionsand air their grievances,” he said.

“Then we must make a recommendation tothe national committee, which in turn must sub-mit its recommendations to the Minister ofSport, Recreation, Arts and Culture.”

This process will only begin after the munici-pal elections of August 3, Jodwana said.

“With the municipal election around the cor-ner, everyone will be occupied with it and wewill not stand in the way of that.

“The public meetings will be arranged afterthe election.”

) Gqeberha is the old name for Walmer fromwhich the word Kabega was derived. Uitenhagewas formerly known among isiXhosa speakingpeople as Qhagqiwa and Port Elizabeth as iB-hayi and/or Cacadu.

THE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipali-ty will take the metro’s Old Age Homesunder its wing and make sure that thecity’s elderly are taken care of.

This was said by Executive Mayor,Danny Jordaan, while addressingabout 500 elderly people at the Feather-makert Hall during a celebration cere-mony to mark the official transfer ofOld Age Homes to the municipality onFriday. Old Age Homes have in thepast been run by Non-GovernmentalOrganisations.

When Jordaan took office last year,the poor conditions of the Old AgeHomeswereoneof the issuesheraised.

He committed to deal with this issueas a priority. Part of this commitmentwas to transfer these homes to the mu-nicipalitywiththeintentionof improv-ing their conditions and the well-beingof theelderly.Underthemunicipality’sHuman Settlements Directorate reno-vation work had already started atsome of these homes with the assist-ance of other government depart-ments, NGOs and private sector, spe-cifically the Nelson Mandela Bay Busi-ness Chamber and the CommunityChest.

Among the problems identified dur-ing the assessment processes were:leaking roofs, exposed electrical wires,non-functional geysers and inadequateperimeter fencing, blocked drainagefacilities and infrastructure problems.

The Directorate prioritised the fen-cing of perimeters and the renovationof the two burnt down units at AdcockHomes. Hygiene and sanitation prod-ucts have already been delivered to thehomes. Four cleaning staff memberswill be allocated to each and everyhome to ensure that the facilities areclean at all times. Small toilets will beattached to the units of the elderly,which will prevent them from walkinglong distances to use the existing semi-detached toilet system.

Application forms and new leaseagreements will be distributed to theresidents of the homes, ensuring thatthe agreement will be kept strictly be-tween the residents and the municipal-ity, when it comes to payment of rentaland queries.

One of the elderly, Peter Johnsonfrom Elizabeth Stuurman Old AgeHomes, said, “I feel very pleased thatthe Municipality will be taking over

the management of our homes. Foryears we’ve had conflict with the waythings were being run and the tensionit has brought amongst residents. I canonly wait and hope for the best. I amgrateful to Danny Jordaan for his wayof dealing with our matters.”

Brenda Plaatjies from BethelsdorpOld Aged Home also expressed hergratitude. “We are looking forward tothe new plans and everything the May-or shared with us today. Recently wehad a big burglary at our homes wherevaluable items were stolen out of a fewresidents’ units. This was because wehad no securities. So we are lookingforward to having securities 24/7.”

The Executive Mayor promised tovisit the Old Age Homes on a regularbasis to assess the work that is beingdone. “This celebration today is not thelast day that you see and interact withme. More intimate interaction at yourhomes where you stay will continuewith me and our leadership collective.Wewillworktogethertobringbackthedignity that you have lost throughyears of ill treatment and lack of com-passion that you have received,” saidJordaan. – REPORTER

beth are invited to help make2 500 litres of soup to feed thehungry as their 67-minute con-tribution to the internationallycelebrated Mandela Day, whichis July 18.

The great soup cook-up is be-ing hosted by the Radisson BluHotel and Algoa Cares on thePollock beach lawn opposite theRadisson Blu Hotel on Saturday,

July 16 from 10am until 5pm.Volunteers will assist Algoa

FM presenters and Radisson BluHotel chefs with the chopping ofvegetables and the making ofsandwiches.

Alternatively people can deliv-er a food parcel to the value ofR67, or a tin or bag of pet food tothe venue on the 16th.

Die drie “groot kanonne” is hartlik deurinwoners verwelkom – ondanks onlangsespanning oor die ANC se kandidatelyste insekere wyke hier.

Gordhan het gesê hy glo dat Jordaan en die

ANC in die metro binne die volgende vyfjaar groot verandering kan bring.

Hy het veral Jordaan se planne om infra-struktuur te verbeter en die stad se toerismete ontwikkel, geprys.

Jordaan, wat ‘n tweede draai in NewBrighton gemaak het, het gesê dis tyd om hulverkiesingsveldtog te verskerp aangesiendaar minder as ’n maand oor is voor die ver-kiesing.

Hy glo, ten spyte daarvan dat die DA voeldat húlle die metro op 3 Augustus gaan oor-neem, dat die ANC tóg sal wen en nou hardersal werk om nóg stemme in te win.

“Ja, die verkiesing is om die draai,” hethy gesê.

“Maar die proses is ’n marathon. In ’n ma-rathon begin ’n mens nie onmiddellik nael

Intussen het die DA-leier Mmusi MaimaneSaterdag ook weer ’n Baaise draai gemaakom met inwoners van Walmer-township tepraat oor die party se hoop om werksgeleent-hede ná die munisipale verkiesing te skep.

Maimane het ook gekap na planne om ’nnuwe ampsvliegtuig vir pres. Jacob Zuma tekoop.

ASANDA Mchunu, a local teenager, wascrowned the new Miss Teen CommonwealthSA last weekend in Pretoria.

She beat 29 other girls from all over thecountry for the title.

Mchunu won a R15 000 cash prize as wellas other prizes from the competition spon-sors and will be the new representative fora few brands.

She does not know as yet what she wantsto do with the money, but plans to keep itas a safety net in the meantime.

“It will come in handy; it might not benext week or next month or even next yearbut sometime it will,” she said.

Mchunu was previously crowned MissJunior Teen South Africa in 2014 and hasparticipated in several charity projects andevents.

She plans to use her new title to keep do-ing charity work and build on what she hasalready achieved.

“To me, winning this title does not meanI get to change what I was doing before. Itjust means more consistency. Now I willcarry on the work I started with the HumanDignity Centre, M.T.R. Smit Children’s Ha-ven and Rolemodels Imfundo Foundation.However, I am looking into starting my owncharity organisation,” she said.

Mchunu added that she chose these chari-ties because they deal specifically with chil-dren and that the best way to make a differ-ence was to start with them.

She is currently a first-year Media, Com-munication and Culture student at NelsonMandela Metropolitan University (NMMU).

“It is clearly evident that my passion liesin Media and people.”

Mchunu said that her new title is notmeant for her alone.

“This title is not just for me, it’s for every-

one who supported me and carries on to sup-port me. It is for my community, thereforewinning it and being able to represent a coun-try that I love means the world to me.”

She will be representing South Africa nextyear at the Miss Teen Commonwealth Inter-national competition in London where shewill compete against representatives from 53other countries.

Die ding waarvan ek seker die meeste houvan musiek is dat dit ’n effek het op hoe mensvoel. In soveel omstandighede bepaal my ge-voelens die manier wat ek kyk na die lewe endus het musiek nog altyd ’n groot effek op my.

VISTARUS Mission Station in Syden-ham officially celebrated its 18th yearof service to the Eastern Cape commu-nity on Friday.

Vistarus is a family-run organisa-tion dedicated to getting homeless andtroubled people off the street.On July 8 1998, Kobus and Lynette

Jacobs started this life-changing cen-tre and since then they have soldmostof their earthly belongings to keep itafloat.Lynette Jacobs said that theyhadno

idea what they were doing when theystarted on this journey and learnedmost of what they know through vari-ous mistakes until things evolved intothe smooth-running system they havetoday.“Godtoldusto lovethesepeople.And

that is exactlywhatwearedoinghere,”she added.On average they house about 80 chil-

dren at any given time and providehousing for more than 400 people.Vistarus is actually a community

within a community. It has its own lit-tle tuck shop, a playground for the chil-dren and several fundraising projects

in progress. They even have a doctorwho comes in once a week for thosewhoneedmedical assistance or advice.The centre rents out apartments to

peoplewith jobson theoutsideandpro-vides ahome to thehomeless anddesti-tute.For those who cannot pay their own

way, there is a programme they musttake part in, in order to stay at the cen-tre.“Everynewperson is interviewedby

Kobus toget a feel for their circumstan-ces so we know what to do with themnext,” said Nadia Jacobs, public rela-tions officer for Vistarus.The programme lasts for at least

threemonths, duringwhichaddicts, al-coholicsandabusevictimsmustattendchurch and counselling, and adhere toseveral rules before graduating. Theprogramme is mandatory for bothadults and children.They each get a set of clothes, shoes

and other essentials when they arrivefor which they are responsible.They are eventually placed into the

work programme at the centre.The various jobs on offer at the cen-

tre include working in the laundryroom,thekitchen, thelibrary, thewoodwork shop and the Plastic Plant owned

by the centre.There is also a crèche where people

can leave their children in themorningbefore going to work.The biggest project currently run-

ning at the centre is the recyclingproject,withmore than60peoplework-ing in it. It provides the bulk of the cen-tre’s income.Most of the essential supplies at the

centre such as clothes and food comefrom sponsors. Woolworths has beenthe centre’s biggest food supplier since2007.“The majority of the guys that come

in are very malnourished and thin.That is why the good meals are so im-portant,” said Steven Bolhuis, who re-cently joined the centre as a missionworker.The centre cooks more than 20 000

meals every month and uses about 40loaves of bread every day.Thecentrehas starteda fewnewpro-

jects recently such as a solar panelproject and a safe house for babiescalled Hope Baby Safe Home wherethey wish to provide shelter for chil-drenbeingplaced in the foster care sys-tem.For more info go to www.vistar-

sion on me,” Steward agreed.“Furthermore, we felt that this multilingual

and multicultural musical production IpiNtombi could work well in exposing our ownmultilingual andmulticultural learners in this

day and age,” Feltham said.This production, however, was not smooth

sailing all the time, according to Feltham.She said, “Whenyou buy the rights to do any

other production you usually get lots of infor-

mation and materials. This was not the casewith Ipi Ntombi.“But luckily, we’ve got a very able produc-

tion team made up of (Eddie) Leroux and(John) Allen taking charge of music and(Amanda) Engelbrecht and Coetzee on vocaldirections.”With this team, including Sibabalwe Ngewu

storyline. She said, “I like the storyline and be-ing in this production. It’s an honour, as noteverybody made it through auditions.”“I’m impressed with what I saw. These kids

arereally talented.There’s little touch-ups thatI need to do,” said Chabeli in his first visit tothe school two weeks back.He promised to come-back next week to deal

with other issues like costumes so that the castlooks almost exactly like the original.

Frost was associated with the BluesBroers for 21 years and recorded five al-bums with them before they parted wayslast year.He has also toured with Simple Minds

THE organizers at the SPAR Valley Marketwere proud to showcase Likusasa LomamaCommunity Project after identifying theirinitiative in the community.

They equipped and empowered themwiththe resources needed to become social entre-preneurs and take their business to the nextlevel.Organiser Ryan Le Roux says that this is

an example of the innovation the market isusing to turn profit into purpose.Phumla Dyafta and her teamwere invited

to sell their surplus vegetables at the ValleyMarket recently as part of the market’s goalto give previously disadvantaged people anopportunity to be involved in business.The ladies arrived with heads of cabbage

and bunches of carrots and spinach.They had woken up early on Saturday

morning to pick the vegetables as theywant-ed them to be as fresh as possible - by 11amthey had sold out completely.Likusasa Lomama consists of 35 backyard

vegetable gardens planted by families inKwadwesi.The aim is for the produce from these gar-

dens to supply the Community Soup Kitchenwith enough vegetables to serve the needy inthe neighbourhood. Currently it serves over100 men, women and children every day.The project was started in 2012 by a group

of ladies who needed to feed their families.Due to the need in the community they soon

started a soupkitchen in a garage for twodaysa week.Anyone was welcome to their soup provid-

ed they start a vegetable garden in their backyards, as well to assist the soup kitchen.The Likusasa ladies will be back in full

force at the next SPAR Valley Market on Au-gust 6 with many more fresh vegetables tosell.SPAR Eastern Cape is excited to be a part

of this community initiative in supporting lo-cal entrepreneurs.Their aim is to grow local supplierswith the

hope of finding a vendor that can bementoredand grown into possibly one of their listedsuppliers.

MORNINGSIDE High School held a‘YouthCelebration’ on June 23 in an ef-fort to inspire the learners insportwiththe support of a few external coaches.

The event was dedicated entirely toteambuildingamongsports teams.Un-der the watchful eyes of Siyanda Jem-sana, his people and Onke Sotyato,owner of Unearth Entertainment, thelearners were led through a pro-grammecontaining ‘icebreakers’, a les-son called “Who am I”, the various sta-ges of team building, communicationsand a number of games played outside.Jemsana, the owner of Afrotangible

EntertainmentandArts, said theiraimwas to get kids looking forward toplaying sport.They want the learners to play at

least two sports a year, one in thewin-ter and another during the summer.“It is very important forkids toplay

sport,” said Jemsana, who is a basket-ball player and former MorningsideHigh learner.He added that the event was to pro-

mote sport and toget learnerswhoarenot academically gifted to understandthat they stand a chance at winning ascholarship if they are good at sport.“Most parents can’t afford to sendtheir kids to university after highschool,” he said. This is a very com-mon concern among parents.There were many basic sports that

were previously not available at theschool due to a lack of coaches. Thiscaused many learners to lose interestin the sports programmeat the school.

“We started rugby threemonths ago.There was no rugby team at theschool,” Jemsana said. They startedthe u16 team.The school currently offers netball,

hockey, soccer, rugby, basketball andtennis. New sports include table tennisandswimming, andacricket teamis inthe making. A rowing club is in thepipeline for next year.On the academic side of things, the

school is also forming a debate teamand looking into thepossibility of spell-ing bees for high school.A recent article in the Business Day

Live states that about 60% of childrenin South Africa cannot read at even abasic level at the end of Grade 4.Jemsana said that this is a problem

for the Morningside learners as well.“Oftentimes, the answer is correct, butthespellingiswrong.Youcannotreallygive them a mark.”The spelling bees are an attempt at

addressing this problem.Twice a week the learners only go

home at 3pm, when things like the de-bate team are introduced to them. “Weget more involved with the school on aone-on-one basis.”According toJemsana, theprincipal,

Saraswathi Pather, is trying very hardto change the school for the better. “Weeven introduced tablets this year.”He added that they are considering

getting the entire school involved in anevent like the Youth Celebration forMandela Day.

THEAssociation for Personswith Physical Dis-abilities in Nelson Mandela Bay is the officialmanufacturer of 50% of this year’s Casual Dayclothing to help raise funds for the campaign.

“It is has been a privilege to see people whodirectly benefit from this massive initiative be-ingtheonestakingpowerintotheirownhands,”saidBrettMarshall,FundraisingManagerof theAssociation of Persons with Disabilities (APD)in Nelson Mandela Bay.The APD is an NGO that owns Ability, the

clothing manufacturing factory in NelsonMan-dela Bay, which was started as a fundraisingconcept to create employment for persons withdisabilities.The teams consist of personswith disabilitieswho have been trained on-site to produce theitems from scratch.“As a person with a disability myself, it is

great toknowIamtakingpart insomething thatwill eventually benefit others with disabilitiesand for that I thankCasualDay,” saidDorisSon-jica, seamstress at the Ability Workshop.Ability manufactured the burgundy colouredT-shirts and buckets hats, which have the 2016Casual Day theme, “UpYourGame”, printed on

them.By wearing the merchandise, people canshow off their support whilst contributing tothe cause.“We are always grateful to our communitymemberswhodonateand“sport”theirsupportfor the campaign by wearing the t-shirts andofficial stickers on Casual Day. Proposed Augmentation of DriftsandsCollector Sewer (Reapplication)

Notice is hereby given of a Public ParticipationProcess (PPP) in terms of the National EnvironmentalManagement Act (No. 107 of 1998, as amended)(NEMA) and 2014 EIA regulations (GN R982 - 985) toundertake a reapplication process due to the existingenvironmental authorisation lapsing.

Proposed augmentation of theDriftsands collector sewer through the installation of a4.2 km long 1200 mm diameter pipe parallel to theexisting pipeline route (from Buffelsfontein Road in asouth-easterly direction and terminating at theDriftsands WwTW). The project was previouslyauthorised under the 2010 EIA regulations in May2013.

The application will beprocessed by the Eastern Cape Department ofEconomic Development, Environmental Affairs &Tourism (DEDEAT), Port Elizabeth.

Interested and affectedparties (I&APs) are hereby invited to register as I&APsand to comment on the project should they wish to doso. Any additional information relating to the projectcan be requested from the EAP. The BasicAssessment report will be available for comment untilthe 24 of August 2016. A hard copy will be availablefor viewing at the Aurecon offices. Alternatively anelectronic copy of the report can be requested from theEAP.

WHEN the first Ford Figo came out in SA, Iliked the performance and features of the car,but it lacked that certain “je ne sais quoi” thatits competitors, such as the Chevrolet Spark,had as far as exterior looks went. Which isstrange, considering how good Ford’s Fiestaand Focus feature in the design stakes.Ford has, however, redeemed itself with its

relaunch in mid-October last year of the Figo– offering it for the first time in hatch and se-dan versions. And in my opinion the dynam-ic, sporty-looking hatch version is a vast im-provement on the firstmodel, while the sedanversion could still do with a little moreoomph.The newFigo is available in three specifica-

tion levels, i.e the Ambiente, Trend and high-est spec Titanium. One has the choice be-tween 1.5-litre petrol and diesel engines, aswell as manual and PowerShift Auto trans-mission options.Express on Wheels recently took two of the

newFordFigomodels on themom’s taxi routefor a week – the Ford Figo Sedan 1.5 litre pet-rol PowerShift (Auto) transmission in thehigh spec Titanium version (retailing atR209 900) and the diesel hatchback with man-ual transmission, the 1.5 TDCi Trend (retail-ing at R203 900).

ExteriorWith the all-new Ford Figo, the designers

incorporated Ford’s Kinetic 2.0 design lan-guage, as seen in the likes of the latest FordFusion and Focus.The five-door hatch incorporates a rising

roofline with a sporty spoiler and good look-ing tailgate with a dynamic looking design.The sedan version has a more conservativestyling and is more rounded at the back fora bigger boot.

InteriorThe interior is also completely new and

boasts some innovative smart features,which(depending on model) include a new device-docking station, BluetoothwithVoiceActiva-tion, the programmable MyKey® function, aswell as electronic automatic temperature con-trol.The all-new Figo has 20 smart storage spa-

ces and convenience features which includea large glove box that is big enough to fit alaptop.The Sedan offers up to 445 litres of luggage

space in the boot with fold-down rear seats in-creasing its loading capacity and versatility.The seat-backs of the all-new Hatch (Trend

and Titanium) have a 60/40 split for greaterflexibility.

Smart technologyTheall-newFigo features impressive smart

technologies that help people to integratetheir car into their digital lives.MyFord Dock® is a first-in-class feature

and standard in theAmbiente andTrend specvehicles. This allows mobile phones, MP3players and satellite navigation systems to bemounted and charged and to be integrated in-to the car’s entertainment system.Ford’s SYNC® integrated multimedia and

connectivity system is standard equipmentin the top of the range Figo Titanium. SYNC®lets drivers interact hands-free with theirmobile devices and entertainment systemwith voice commands.On the Ambiente and Trendmodels, a stan-

dard four-speaker audio system is providedthat includes a radio/CD unit with MP3-com-patibility, Bluetooth connectivity, as well asUSB and Aux inputs. The Titanium furthergains remote audio controls on the steeringwheel.The all-new Figo Titanium also features

Ford’s MyKey® with which owners can setsensible restrictions for drivers with less ex-perience.

SafetyIt features aminimum of dual front airbags

on the lower spec models, while the Titaniumversion has six airbags – including side andcurtain airbags. There are ABS brakes acrossthe range, plus Electronic Stability Pro-gramme (ESP) with Hill Launch Assist on thetop derivatives. This holds the vehicle for upto three seconds as the driver’s foot movesfrom the brake to the accelerator.

Figo 1.5 litre petrol PowerShiftTitanium Sedan

This is the highest spec petrol version of theall-new Figo featuring an auto transmissionand retailing at R203 900.The sedan’s exterior is a bit too conserva-

tively styled to my taste and doesn’t look asattractive as the new hatch model – but se-dans are by nature probably supposed to lookmore practical than sporty. And the practica-bility of its big boot space makes up for this.The interior boasts bits and pieces from the

Fiesta and other Ford models and is quiteroomy with ample legroom. It is a basic car

but has handy gadgets such as Ford Sync,steering wheel controls and USB ports, elec-tric windows and nice storage spaces.The automatic transmission is a bonus for

me.While youwill always have a bit of a prob-lemwith a heavy foot on the acceleratorwhenyou are driving a car with a smallish enginecoupled to an automatic transmission, the Fi-go’s advanced 6-speed PowerShift Auto trans-mission is quite capable and willing. Onesoon learns how to gently increase the pres-sure on the accelerator so as not to struggle

of torque and its combined cycle fuel con-sumption is stated as 5.6L/100km.

Test drive of the Figo 1.5 TDCiTrend hatch

The dieselmodels are powered by a 1.5-litreDuratorq TDCi engine that develops 74kWand 215Nm with the average fuel consump-tion stated as 4.1L/100km. It has a five-speedmanual gearbox.I liked the new hatch shape with its sporty

look and while you will not often equate asporty looking car with a diesel engine, thisengine performs very well with impressivefuel consumption figures.The diesel engine is a bit loud when start-

ing the car, but once it gets going and out onthe open road the engine sound is hardly no-ticeable.Thenew instrument cluster design is an im-

provement on the old look. The hatch offersvery adequate boot space and the number andplacement of storage compartments is quitenifty.

Prices:The prices for the hatch models range from

R169 600 to R207 900, while the sedan models’prices range from R172 900 to R209 900.

THE notoriously unpredictable Britishweather was surprisingly docile right up un-til ten minutes before the start of the BritishGrand Prix.

As the rain came down the Silverstone cir-cuit race director Charlie Whiting declaredthat the race would start behind the safetycar.Although safety is of paramount impor-

tance the safety-car start deprived everyoneof the battle, into turn one, between the front-row starting Mercedes teammates Lewis Ha-milton and Nico Rosberg.

The safety-car pulled into the pitlane afterfive laps with most of the field switching tointermediate tyres while Hamilton contin-ued to build a gap to second-placed Rosberg.Hamilton, Rosberg and the two Red Bulls

of Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo hadnot swopped their wet tyres for intermedi-ates. They would have been at a disadvan-tage to those behind were it not for PascalWehrlein who aquaplaned his Manor intothe gravel trap and out of the race on lap sev-en – resulting in the virtual safety-car beingbrought out.As the race settled after the first round of

stops, Hamilton comfortably led the wayfrom his teammate. On occasion Rosbergthreatened to close the gap to Hamilton, butnever followed through. He also had to dealwith a spirited Max Verstappen snapping athis heels.After a few laps of hounding Rosberg, the

18-year-old Verstappen pulled off a stunning-ly brave move around the outside of Chapelto take second place. The season still hassomeway to go but this overtakingmovewilltake some beating.As the circuit continued to dry, the next

round of stops saw everyone switch to dry

Sebastian Vettel completed a miserableday for Ferrari in ninth. The German driverstarted the race in eleventh after sufferingyet another five-place gearbox penalty.Though there was nothing deliberate

about it, he was slapped with a 5-second pen-alty for forcing FelipeMassa off the tack. Thepenalty didn’t affect his final position in therace.The second Toro Rosso of Daniil Kvyat

scored the final point in tenth.Controversy enveloped theMercedes team

as Rosberg ran into gearbox problems late inthe race. The pitwall gave instruction onwhich setting to change and coached Ros-berg to shift through seventh gear.By telling the driver to shift through the

gear, the teambreached the driver communi-cation rule, which prohibits the team fromgiving instructions to fix a performance is-sue.Nearly four hours after the race the stew-

ards imposed a ten-second penalty on Ros-berg, which dropped him to third in the raceclassification. Mercedes has stated their in-tent to appeal the decision.A new precedent was set as it’s the first in-

stance where a penalty had to be imposed forthe breach of driver communication rules.However, a ten-second penalty isn’t much

of a deterrent if the alternative is retirement.Nico Rosberg started the season with four

consecutive wins but has only claimed victo-ry in one of the last six races.Add to this that a fourth win on home soil

has put Hamilton only one point adrift of thechampionship lead and it appears as if theBrit is gaining an ominous momentum.

race to fourth, Ferrari’s newly re-signedKi-mi Raikkonen was able to close down a sub-stantial gap to Perez for fifth. Perez finishedsixth ahead of Force India teammate NicoHulkenberg in seventh and Toro Rosso’sCarlos Sainz in eighth.

NMMUstudents Dane Cox andDane vanGre-unen surfed their way into the UniversitySportSouthAfrica (USSA) teamafter impress-ing in the annual championships at VictoriaBay, near George, last month.

The BillabongMadibaz team ended third inthe men’s event and fourth in the women’scontest for a third place in the overall teamstandings.However, therewassomejoywhenVanGre-

unen and Coxwere named in the USSAmen’steam.The 20-year-old Van Greunen was selected

for the third straightyear,whichdelighted thethird-year marketing student.“Itwasanhonour tobe selected for the third

year running,” saidVanGreunen,whoattend-ed Grey Junior and Pearson High. “To be in-cluded with some great names of the sport is al-ways a job well done.“The level of surfing is always high and with

surfers like Shaun Joubert taking part there isno room for error.”For the 24-year-old Cox, who was educated at

Port Alfred Junior School and Kingswood Col-lege in Grahamstown, his selection was confir-

mation that he could compete with the best ofthe country’s surfers.“Making the team again this year showedme

I could still compete at a high level,” said Cox.“Although Iwasdisappointedon thedaywith

myresult, I realisenow that thingsdon’t alwaysgoyourwayand that Ihavemuch to learnaboutcompetition surfing and wave selection.

ces and have always guided me in the right di-

rection,” he said.“It has also been important to take part in a

sport duringmy studies, which should be com-pulsory for every student.“I’mpleased thatNMMUrecognises thesport

ofsurfingas itmakesmefeel involvedandmoti-vated to do well in my studies.”Cox, in his final year of a BTech degree in

quantity surveying, also said that his familyhad provided support throughout his surfingcareer.He added, though, that he would like to see

greater investment in the sport.“I just want to take this opportunity to stress

the need for sponsorship in the surf industry.“Competing or qualifying for theWorld Tour

is extremely expensive and almost impossiblefor many young surfers.“Unless there is government intervention or

support fromthecorporateworld,manysurfersare simply not able to pursue their dreams.”Cox saidhehadmademanyclose friendsdur-

ing his surfing days at NMMU, who had helpedhim develop a competitive edge.“Ibelieveall thecompetitive surfing I’vedone
