    THEmedia andpeople ofNelsonMandelaBay

know her as the voice of the police in the city,

who has to be ready with answers, more often

than not about heinous crimes, within minu-

    tes of it happening.

At the end of last year, Capt. Sandra Janse

van Rensburg of the Mount Road Police Stati-

on, was rewarded for her dedication in repre-

senting the police while keeping the public in-

formed, by being named as the police spoke-

sperson of the year in the Eastern Cape.

It is always a highlight when hard work is

    recognised, saidJansevanRensburgmodest-

    ly.

It is the first time in her seven years as liai-

son between the police and themedia that she

has been recognised in this way. But that can

mostprobablybeattributed to the fact that she

has never entered herself for the award.

In the past the spokespersons had to enter

for the award and motivate why they should

be chosen. Last year the award was, however,

    not open for applications, andJansevanRens-

    burg was selected as winner.

A communication person of a company is

not only a spokesperson, but also the face of the

company for the public and therefore such a

person must set an example and have an irre-

proachable character, is how the award was

    described during the announcement.

Although surprised at receiving the award,

she attributes her success to her commitment

    to continuallybuildandstrengthenworkingre-

    lationships.

I realise everyonehas a job to do. Themedia

has a role and I have a role to play. Sometimes

it does get difficult, but in the endwe need each

other to function. The secret is to never take

things personally and to forgive quickly, she

    said.

Janse vanRensburg nowhas her eyes firmly

set onhernext goal. I havehad the rankof cap-

tain for 18 years now. To be promoted in rank

is one of my next goals, said Janse van Rens-

    burg.

Capt. Sandra Janse van Rensburg, Police

Spokesperson in Port Elizabeth, will almost

always be found with two cellphones in her

hands one for work and one for private use

which often will be used for work too, in order

to keep the media and public informed on

    crime matters. PHOTO: WERNER HILLS

THEpolice in Port Elizabeth arewarning own-

ers of older model vehicles to be more security

    conscious.

Recent crime statistics have shown an in-

crease in the theft of older-model vehicles.

    The commonvehicles takenare theVWGolf,

    Mazda 323, FordLaser, ToyotaTazz, ToyotaCo-

    rolla andbakkies including the IzuzuandToyo-

ta. All types of trailers are also stolen.

Many of these vehicles are taken from off-

street parking verges as well as shopping cen-

    tres and malls.

Owners are urged to park their vehicles in

their property and if they have a garage, to

make use of it. Alternatively park the vehicle

as close to the house as possible. REPORTER

    REPORTER

THE police are asking employers of do-

mestic workers to remind them to be

vigilant as they are alone at the house

most of the day and are often seen as soft

    targets by house burglars.

    According to police spokesperson

    Captain Sandra Janse vanRensburg em-

    ployers continuously have to communi-

cate with domestic workers to be alert

when alone at home and keep the doors

locked when they are inside the house.

She said the employer should always

inform the domestic worker if someone

was coming to do chores at the house

and they should be instructed not to al-

low anyone entry to the house if it had

not been cleared with the home owner.

Ensure that the domestic worker has

a way to contact the owner via What-

sApp or by SMS if she is in a difficult

    situation.

Ensure that everyone in the house

knows how to use the alarm system, and

knows where the panic buttons are situ-

    ated, Janse van Rensburg said.

ALEXANDER Road High pupil, Amy Eras-

mus (17), successfully completed her first

Robben Island crossing on December 18.

Amy was accompanied by English Chan-

    nel swimmer andmotivational speaker, Toni

Enderli, who helped guide her until her

    hands reached sand.

Also accompanying her, was her support

crew, Derrick and Debbie Frazer from Big

    Bay Events.

A large pod of dolphins also spent a few ex-

    hilarating moments swimming with them.

Not to be left out of the limelight three hump-

back whales decided to pop past and check

    on the swimmers as well.

After the acute disappointment of abort-

ing a swim in extreme conditions in May

2015, we were over the moon to advise Amy

that the weather forecast was looking prom-

ising for an attempt at the extreme open wa-

ter crossing. The crossing from Robben Is-

land to Blouberg covers a distance of 7.4km

in the hostile Atlantic Ocean where the cold

water ensures only verywell prepared swim-

mers can succeed, said Derrick Frazer, who

is also a committeemember of theCapeLong

    Distance Swimming Association.

    The promised conditions materialized on

    thedayandafter checking anddouble check-

    ing safety equipment, electronic shark

shields, swimmers feeds and drinks they

    launched the IRBandmade theirway toRob-

    ben Island.

At 7.55am Amy, clad in a swimming cos-

tume, single swimming cap and goggles,

raised her hand and plunged into the cold

Atlantic waters and started swimming to-

    wards Blouberg.

Support on the IRB guided her on the

shortest route towards Big Bay on the Blou-

berg coast and carried her feeds.

    Scheduled feeding tookplace every 30min-

utes to ensure she maintained her strength

and energy reserves as the cold water forces

the body toworkhard tomaintain a function-

    al core temperature.

At 10.32am Amy walked clear of the water

and achieved her dream of completing this

    gruelling swim.

The smiles and excitement bursting from

her face hid the effort and pain that she had

pushed her body through for the previous 2

hours and 37 minutes, Frazer said.

    Marco achieved an avera-

ge of 80,5% in the record

    in tourismandmathematics.

    His dream of becoming a

    of his own teachers.

Mr Ludick, my life orientation tea-

I am not scared to work hard for that

PEP, which has 70% of the school shoe mar-

ket and over 57% of the uniform market in

South Africa, is committed to finding ways of

easing the increasing financial strain for its

customers, who are the first to feel the strain

of rising costs of fuel, electricity and food.

Through our research over the years, one

    message thathasbeenconsistent fromourcus-

tomers is that their childrens education takes

priority, explains Nobesuthu Tom, PEP mar-

    keting director.

They will often compromise on other

things to pay for school fees and transport to

school, as well as school-wear and stationery.

This Back-to-School (BTS), PEP has negoti-

ated with its manufacturers in order to freeze

the price of the entry level Student Prince syn-

thetic shoe at last years prices in an attempt

    tohelpcustomersduringback toschool:R59.99

for girls, size 8-1; R64.99 for boys, size 8-1).

This shoe is manufactured under the PEP

Student Prince label, to ensure quality stan-

    dards.

PEPs Student Prince shoe range also in-

cludes a higher quality leather shoe, which is

expected to be the lowest priced leather school

shoe in themarket this BTS period: R119.99 for

girls (size 9-1) and R129.99 for boys (sizes 9-1).

    PEPManaging Director, Leon Lourens says

that a key part of PEPs social responsibility

at BTS is to help its customers with the best

possible prices on all uniform items. We have

the buying might and we also manufacture

many of the uniform items here in South Afri-

ca. Our constant aim is to bring down the cost

of uniforms at BTS, without compromising

our quality, while also maintaining stock lev-

els of all school uniform items throughout the

    year.

Another area inwhichPEP focuses its social

responsibility in education is the PEP Acade-

mies. The PEP Academies, of which there are

17 in total, provide literacy and numeracy sup-

port classes for Grades 4 & 5 learners and will

give nearly 3000 children after-school training

in eleven schools on three afternoons a week.

    All PEP Academies will

    begivingeducators tools for

    making the most of class

    time and will help shift

    the focus from

    compliance and curricu-

    lumcoverage toeffective-

    ness and quality.

    SASHIKA PILLAY

APART from the release of the matric

results, the most anticipated event in

the final year of high school is themat-

    ric farewell dance.

Sadly, not everymatric pupil can af-

    ford toattend thisdance, saidAnnelise

    Damons, founder of the Cinderella

    Foundation in Bloemendal.

The foundation, which is the brain-

child of Damons and her sister, Ingrid

    Kallies, isanon-profitorganisation,es-

tablished last year in April. The foun-

    dation aims to help underprivileged

    matrics by providing themwith dress-

es or suits for their matric dance and

    assistingwithhair,nailsandmake-up.

For many girls, a matric dance is

something that is spoken about and

    dreamedof from thebeginningof their

    matric year.

    Damons chose the name Cinderella

    Foundation because she wanted to

make matric dance wishes come true.

    These matrics have spent many

years studying and this is a way of re-

warding them for staying in school be-

causewe know its not easy, especially

    financially, Damons added.

    The Cinderella Foundation was in-

spired by her son, Lesley Damons,

who was unable to complete high

    school.

My sonwas supposed to be inmat-

ric last year but he was assaulted by

two bullies a few years ago.

He couldnt finish school due to

brain damage. I want to encourage

young people not to leave school if

they have the ability to complete it,

    she said.

    Although the foundation is less

than a year old, Damons, together

with the help of her volunteers and

    sponsors, has helped over 150matrics

    attend their matric farewell dance.

Most of the girls have never used

make up or had their hair and nails

done before, so its a privilege to help

    them feel special, she said.

    Nasherlee Collins (18) who attended

    Bethelsdorp Comprehensive High

School last year, said that on the day

of hermatric dance, she felt like a Dis-

    ney Princess.

    The Cinderella Foundation really

helped me. I had my own dress but I

still needed to get my hair, nails and

make-up sorted. It was stressful but

    they (Cinderella Foundation) came to

my rescue and made me look and feel

    like a princess, Collins said.

    The foundation recently started as-

    sisting underprivileged couples who

    are struggling with wedding prepara-

    tions due to financial reasons.

We dont sponsor the whole wed-

    dingbutwehelpwithweddingdresses,

    suits, accessories and

    discounts forhair,nailsandmakeup,

    Damons said.

    The foundation only requests R100

donation from the matric pupil. After

the dance, the dress, suit, shoes andac-

    cessoriesmustbereturnedintheorigi-

    nal condition to the foundation.

I hope I will get more sponsors be-

cause we have problems with trans-

port to take the matrics to their ball.

My wish for 2016 is that we help

even more matrics than last year -

thats whywere planning on having a

function soon to raise funds. It will be

    likeaball for thoseoutof schoolorwho

did not attend their farewell dance,

    Damons said.

    REPORTER

    WHILEgrowingupasayoungherdboy looking

after goats and cattle with the only beautiful

things being the surrounding nature and sky,

Professor Azwinndini Muronga fell in love

with nature and started asking questions that

    were considered taboo.

This curiosity led him to become a physicist

interested in not only asking fundamental

questions about nature and origins, but also

    howthepowersofscienceandtechnologycould

beharnessed to change theworld for the better,

especially for those at the margins of society.

As the newly appointed Dean of

    Science at Nelson Mandela Metro-

    politan University, Prof Muronga

will be in the best place to achieve

    these goals.

    His appointment comes into ef-

fect from April 1 this year.

    Prof Muronga is a theoretical

    physicist, who started his tertiary

education at the University of Ven-

    dawithBSc degree inMathematics

    andPhysics, thenenrolled foraBSc

    (Honours) and Master of Science

    (MSc)degrees inPhysicsat theUni-

versity of Cape Town. Subsequently, he com-

pleted a PhD in Physics at the University of

    Minnesota in the United States.

He did his postdoctoral training at the Uni-

versity of Frankfurt and at GSIHelmholtz Cen-

tre for Heavy Ion Research in Germany.

He joined UCT in 2005 as a senior lecturer

until September 2010. Since October 2010, he

    hasbeenanassociate professor at theUniversi-

ty of Johannesburg and, until 2015, served as

Director of the UJ Soweto Science Centre.

ProfMurongas own research field lies in the

intersection of nuclear physics, particle phys-

ics, astrophysics and cosmology, studying the

nature and properties of hot and dense matter

in heavy ion collisions and astrophysics, as

well as the properties of a new state of matter,

    QuarkGluonPlasma (QGP),which existed just

for a microsecond at the beginning of the uni-

verse after the Big Bang and might also exist

more effective ways of harnessing existing sci-

ence and technology capabilities, as well as

building new capabilities to better tackle the

    majordevelopmental challengesofpoverty,un-

employment and inequality in society. We are

    hugely excited about these possibilities.
