BFMS is planing a full weekend of fun and activities in celebration of its 35th anniversary. This will be a weekend of Roots and Branches - looking back at our roots with the foremothers and forefathers of BFMS joining us from across the country, and looking ahead to the next 35 years as we continue to branch out to enjoy new folk traditions. All aspects of BFMS music and dance will be included in the weekend, including contra dancing, English country dancing, storytelling, Irish music, singing, and even some rapper dancers and cloggers! Many of sister organizations will also be celebrating with us. The boat has two decks - we will likely have one for singing and one for dancing to fabulous live music. A delicious lunch will also be included in the fee. PLEASE NOTE: In order to make this part of the weekend happen, we will need at least 100 people to send in a deposit of $25 by July 10. This deposit will most definitely be 100% refundable IF we do not reach 100 people. Please make your check out to BFMS. In the memo, please mark deposit for 10/10 boat. Second Saturday Events Need a New Home

The Family and Second Saturday dances need to locate a new venue. The ministry at St. Marks on the Hill is growing rapidly and they need the space for their important work. This means that BFMS has to locate another suitable location for the Saturday night event. Please note that the English Country dances are not affected by this!

I would like to thank everyone for the help they gave me after my unfortunate accident at the contra dance on June 9th - from the folks who looked after my "stuff", to those who contacted and made arrangements with my friend, to those who dealt with the rather unreasonable ambulance drivers, to those who just helped to keep me comfortable and tried to cheer me up in a very painful situation, It's very clear why it's so important to me to be part of such a caring community. When my wrist heals, I hope to be back fiddling for you (with the Open Band). And I owe you that last waltz.

The Folklore Society of Greater Washington is seeking talent for a young musicians band to play the family dance on October 10. The young musicians band will play old time and big band arrangements under the direction of the amazing Julia Borland, who has been playing the violin for 50 years and is still having fun! She imparts joy to her students and colleagues and is ready to make some lively music with young musicians.

If you are a musician under the age of 18 and are interested in playing in the young musicians band for the family dance please send an email to [email protected] ASAP with your age, instrument and relative ability (2 years plus, please). We are particularly seeking piano and bass. Rehearsals begin soon.

Blues JamsThe weekly Saturday blues jams of the Archie Edwards Blues Heritage Foundation have resumed at the foundation’s new home at 4701 Queensbury Rd., Riverdale.
