2013-14 Arkansas State Women’s Basketball Prospectus

After narrowly missing out on a share of the

Sun Belt Conference West Division title a year

ago, preseason expectations are high for head

coach Brian Boyer’s 2013-14 squad of Red

Wolves that boosts one of the conference most

talented rosters. With All Sun Belt Second-Team

All-Conference selection Jane Morrill, redshirt

junior Hanna Qedan and a host of talented

sophomores, A-State figures to be in the mix for

a Sun Belt Conference Championship. Adding to

the mix will be three freshmen and two redshirt

sophomores who sat last season that will give

the Red Wolves one of the deepest rosters in the

conference.

Now in his 14th season at the helm of the

ASU women’s basketball program, Boyer’s

squad is loaded with one of the most talented

rosters in recent memory. Seven of the eight re-

turning players saw action in at least 60 percent

of A-State’s games a year ago, while four players

saw playing in all 30 matchups. Boyer guided

the team on a seven game winning streak in the

month of January, which vaulted the Red Wolves

to the top of the SBC West Division standings.

The winning streak was tied for the sixth

longest in school history and saw A-State win

games by an average of 10.9 points per contest.

After the winning streak, ASU went on to

finish second in the Sun Belt Conference West

Division standings, finishing just two games out

of first place. A-State will look to take the next

step forward in the 2013-14, which includes

three returning starters. Morrill and Qedan will

provide the most experience in terms of return-

ers and each averaged in double-figures in con-

ference games a year ago. Carlisha Wyatt also

returns for her senior season after leading the

team in rebounding, while O’Bannon was the

team’s second leading scorer as a freshman.

The second place SBC West Division fin-

ished marked the second time that team had

finished second in the division since the 2006-

07 and the 15-15 overall record was the 10th

.500 or better finish in the Brian Boyer era. The

Red Wolves 12-8 conference record gave ASU a

double-digit win conference mark for sixth time

in the Boyer era.

While over 70 percent of the team’s scoring

returns, replacing defensive stalwarts Quinishia

McDowell and Andi Watson will have to be re-

placed after each graduated over the summer.

The Red Wolves finished fourth in the nation in

the 3-point field goal percentage, allowing op-

ponents to make just 24.9 percent of their at-

tempts from beyond the arc. Incoming freshman

Brittany Fowler could be looked to as the team’s

lockdown defender this season, while Aundrea

Gamble and Brittany Gill are each familiar with

Returning Players

2 Hanna Qedan (G, 5-11, Jr., Farmington, Ark.)

3 JKhadija Brown-Haywood (G, 5-11, So., Centralia, Ill.)

4 Jalen O’Bannon (F, 6-1, So., Memphis, Tenn.)

11 Jane Morrill (F, 6-1, Jr., Scott City, Mo.)

21 Jessica Flanery (G, 5-10, So., Mountain View, Ark.)

23 Jasmine Hunt (F, 6-2, So., Houston, Texas)

Coach Boyer’s defensive scheme

after having redshirted in 2012-13.

FRONTCOURT

For the third straight season

Arkansas State will have one of the

most prolific post players in the

league. Anchoring A-State’s front

line is senior Jane Morrill who led

the team in scoring. Twin sisters

Carlette and Carlisha Wyatt will pro-

vide depth in the frontcourt, while

sophomore Jalen O’Bannon returns

after a stellar first season with the

Red Wolves. Freshman Aundrea Pip-

kins will also provide an added

threat, while junior Jasmine Hunt

will be expected to supply quality

minutes off the bench.

Known for her scoring ability,

Morrill became the 21st player in A-

State women’s basketball history to

reach 1,000 points in her career in

2012-13. She sits in 16th place on

the all-time scoring list at ASU and

ranks as one of the top free throw

shooters in school history as well.

Morrill averaged 14.3 points and 5.4

rebounds per game a year ago, while

also finishing ranked 29th in the na-

tion in field goal percentage after

knocking down 51.2 percent of her

shots. She was third in the Sun Belt

Conference in free throw percent-

age, hitting 83.9 percent of her at-

tempts, and also led the team with

two double-doubles.

Carlisha Wyatt proved to be one

of the best rebounders in the league

and led ASU with 5.6 boards per

game. She mad 13 starts, including

Nov. 12 when she scored a season-

high 19 points and went 9-of-11

from the field. Wyatt proved to be

valuable as both a starter and as the

first option off the bench as well.

Her twin sister Carlette also pro-

vided a strong presence in the paint

and was looked to late in the season

to provide minutes as the Red

Wolves fought through various in-

juries among its frontcourt players.

Hunt played in all one but one

game during her sophomore cam-

paign and averaged 2.1 points and

1.0 rebounds per outing. Hunt has

shown the ability to be a scorer in-

side, totaling eight points in a game

on three times and was the team’s

best shot blocker with 13 rejections

on the year. Over the past two sea-

sons, Hunt has played all but one

game in her career and has been one

of the most consistent options off

the bench for Coach Boyer over the

past two seasons.

Pipkins is the lone newcomer to

the post rotation this season but

brings a wealth of talent to the mix.

Honored as a top-100 player in the

state of the Texas, the 6-foot-4 for-

ward has numerous honors to her

credit including being named a

Texas Rising Star and selected as

one of the top-10 high school post

players in the state of Texas by the

Houston Chronicle.

BACKCOURT

The ASU backcourt is the one of

the area of the team that enters with

the least amount of experience, but

the most excitement. Redshirt soph-

omores Aundrea Gamble and Brit-

tany Gill each sat out in 2012-13, but

the pair is expected to contribute in

a big way for the Red Wolves in the

upcoming season.

SEASON OUTLOOK

2013-14 Arkansas State Women’s Basketball Prospectus

Newcomers

12 Jamie Ruffins (G, 5-8, Fr., Little Rock, Ark.)

13 JBrittany Fowler (G, 5-8, Fr., Leachville, Ark.)

15 Dominique Oliver (G, 5-6, Fr., Rowlett, Texas)

Gamble originally signed with University of

Denver out of high school, but elected to the at-

tend Kilgore College in Texas instead. As a fresh-

man Gamble averaged 16.1 points, 6.2

rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.9 steals while earn-

ing all-conference and all-region honors. She is

expected to compete for one of the starting

guard positions.

Gill also sat out the entire 2012-13 season

but brings a strong pedigree into her redshirt

sophomore season. Gill attended Watson Chapel

High School where she averaged 14 points and

five rebounds as the team’s point guard during

her senior season. She was a member of two

state championship teams and was a two-time

All-State selection. Gill should be considered the

frontrunner to replace Ashley Olvera as the

squad’s starting point guard after Olvera gradu-

ated in the summer.

A familiar face in the guard rotation is

Hanna Qedan who was the team’s third leading

scorer a year ago. After starting her career with

injuries, Qedan emerged as a true 3-point threat

after knocking a team best 36 percent of her at-

tempts from beyond the arc. Qedan knocked

down a career best five ‘3s’ at North Texas and

finished in the top 10 in the SBC in 3-pointers

made. She also had her first career double-dou-

ble on Jan. 24 at Troy when she pulled down 19

points and 14 rebounds.

Sophomores Jessica Flanery and Khadija

Brown-Haywood round out the guard section

after both were contributors as freshman.

Brown-Haywood played in 18 games, but

proved valuable late in the season in conference

play as she provided valuable minutes off the

bench. Flanery could prove to be a dangerous

threat to knock down 3-pointers off the bench

and will look improve upon a solid freshman

campaign.

*With Boyer’s 197th victory, he became the

winningest basketball coach in ASU history.

After 14 seasons at the helm of the Arkansas State

women’s basketball program, head coach Brian Boyer has

not only established himself as the winningest coach in

ASU women’s basketball history, but as the winningest bas-

ketball coach to ever pace the sideline at Arkansas State.

When Boyer led the Red Wolves to a 54-51 victory over

UALR in the 2010-11 regular season finale, he passed for-

mer women’s head coach Jerry Ann Winters with 197 victo-

ries, moving to the top of the list of all coaches in the

history of ASU men’s or women’s basketball.

Since then, Boyer’s career victory total has risen to

226, including 123 Sun Belt Conference victories. His SBC

win total is tied for fourth most all-time, a ranking that in-

cludes all women’s and men’s head coaches, and it ranks

second among active coaches.

During the 2012-13 season, Boyer led A-State to 12 wins in Sun Belt Conference,

marking the sixth that an ASU team had won at least 10 games in conference play

under Boyer's direction. He also guided the team on a seven-game winning streak,

which was tied for the sixth longest in school history. Jane Morrill also became the

22nd player to have played under Boyer to be voted onto the SBC All-Conference team

at the end of the season.

In the 2004-05 season, ASU put together a program-best 10-game Sun Belt Confer-

ence winning streak, part of an 11-game win streak that was the fourth longest in Red

Wolves history. The Red Wolves finished the season 21-11 overall and in second place

in the Sun Belt East Division at 11-3, giving Boyer his first 20-win season as head coach.

The Tribe advanced to the quarterfinals of the WNIT Tournament, defeating SEC powers

Mississippi State and Arkansas along the way. The second round victory over Arkansas

was played in front of a Convocation Center record crowd of 10, 892. The team's suc-

cess earned Boyer his second straight Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year Award.

Boyer joined former Red Wolves coach Jerry Ann Winters as the only two ASU women's

basketball coaches to win back-to-back coach of the year honors. Davie, Sims and

Carter all earned All-Sun Belt honors following the 2004-05 season, marking the first

time in Red Wolves history

that three players earned

all-conference honors in a

single season.

Under Boyer's guid-

ance, Arkansas State has

reached the Women's National Invitation Tournament four times. He led the Red

Wolves to the 2003-04 Sun Belt East Division Championship, the program has produced

19 All-Sun Belt Conference players with Boyer at the helm, and Boyer was named Sun

Belt Conference Coach of the Year following the 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons.

Boyer came to ASU in 1995 spending four seasons as an assistant for former head

coach Jeff Mittie, who is now the head coach at TCU.

A graduate of Missouri Western State College in St. Joseph, Mo., with a bachelor's

degree in education, Boyer was an assistant coach for the men's program for six sea-

sons, including the last three, which he spent as an assistant with the women's pro-

gram as well.

In his four seasons at Arkansas State as an assistant coach, Boyer and the Red

Wolves earned a 75-42 mark. The 1998-99 team went 18-14 with a trip to the Women's

NIT. In the process, ASU earned wins over nationally ranked Virginia and Kansas. The

Red Wolves won 20 games in back-to-back seasons in the 1996-97 and 1997-98 sea-

sons.

In his first season at ASU, the Red Wolves won 17 games despite having just seven

scholarship players.
