A gift from Sanitarium patient George Maxwell, Maxwell Hall

was constructed in 1926 as a home and school for nurses who worked at the Sanitarium. Now

occupied by a health service organization, it remains an active

component of the community’s health care system.

N 42.57.684 W 077.08.057

The Village Library was first established by Andrew Peirce in the YMCA building. It would later move to the village hall for a period before the former New York Central Railroad passenger depot was renovated for its use in 1990. N 42.57.799 W 077.08.217

Reconstructed in 1996, the Band Stand echoes the look and feel of the original two-story structure. Construction was made possible by donations and the hard work of the Clifton Springs Rotary Club. It was dedicated in honor of W. Malcolm Griswold. N 42.57.691 W 077.08.107

Foster Cottage, built by Henry Foster in 1854 is now the home of the Clifton Springs Museum and Historical Society. First built for Foster’s mother, the residence would become the home of Foster and his wife Mary in 1872. Several later superintendents of the Sanitarium would also call Foster Cottage their home. In 1979, the cottage was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. N 42.57.684 W 077.08.259

Built by local merchant Frank Lindner in 1892,

The Lindner Block provides valuable commercial and residential space. At one point the building served as the Town Clerk’s office for the adjacent Town of Manchester. N 42.57.687 W 077.08.320

The Warfield Block, built in 1871, has been the site of many businesses including a carriage and harness shop. Since its renovation in 1995, it has been home to a gourmet restaurant and bakery. N 42.57.868 W 077.08.320

The building originally known as the Parsons Block was built prior to 1874 by, and was named for, W.C. Parsons the first Village Clerk to take office after Clifton Springs was incorporated as a Village in 1859. The building was completely renovated in 2013 and is home to a take-out restaurant and a two story art gallery. N 42.57.676

The Woodbury Building was built in 1927 as a 100-bed hospital and clinic. Named for former Sanitarium superintendent Dr. Malcolm S. Woodbury, it remains a vital part of Clifton Springs Hospital & Clinic.N 42.57.679 W 077.08.128

Louis Comfort Tiffany, the son of Charles Lewis Tiffany who founded Tiffany’s jewelry studios in

Manhattan, is responsible for the “favrile” glass mosaic that hangs in the chapel of the Sanitarium Building, otherwise known as The Spa Apartments. Favrile glass is an iridescent glass with rich colors from deep blue to purple and from green to yellow-gold which resembles the colors in a peacock or the wing-covers of some beetles. Leonardo Da Vinci did the original painting of the Last Supper, but the rendition in the Spa Apartments Chapel is a copy of the painting done by the American Artist, Frederic Wilson, which is a more gentle, quiet version of Christ and his disciples.

Known in its heyday as The San, The Sanitarium Building was completed in 1896. Motivated by advances in medical practices and growth in patient volume, Dr. Foster commissioned this ‘fireproof’ build-ing in 1892. During the early twentieth century it would grow to become a full-service hospital. In 1972, upon the completion of the Hospital & Clinic we know today, The San was converted into The Spa Apartments.N 42.57.673 W 077.08.180

Known to many as The Annex, Foster Block was built by William Foster in 1865. It was first designed as a 60-room hotel with retail shops at street level. In 1876, Dr. Foster established a school for young women on the site, which remained in operation until 1885. In 1889, the Foster Block was annexed by the Sanitarium. N 42.57.684 W 077.08.209

St. John’s Episcopal Church, built in 1879, was the first church

in the village. The stone used in the construction came from Medina via the Erie Canal to Port Gibson, where it was loaded on sleds and lumber wagons for its journey to Clifton Springs.N 42.57.673 W 077.08.020

The First Baptist Church was built in

1888 on land donated by Dr. Henry Foster. As the church’s congregation grew, meeting space and Sunday school rooms were added in 1909. Some thirty years later, bedrock was removed from under the church to allow for the creation of a kitchen and dining room.N 42.57.729 W 077.08.005

John Brown Park, named after a local Rotarian, school teacher, and visionary for the Clifton Springs

park system is home to the Peirce Pavilion II. Constructed in 1991, this pavilion was built to recall the 1880 structure built by Andrew Peirce as a Thank You to Dr. Foster for his care of Peirce’s wife, Mary. The original pavilion, across Main Street from the Sanitarium, served as a village center and a place for visitors to taste the famous sulphur springs water. N 42.57.805 W 077.08.119

For many years, the Palace Theatre was the center for nightly entertainment. After a fire in 1930, the

Palace Theatre reopened to feature ‘talking’ movies. Known to many as The Palace, the building is now used for community events by the YMCA.N 42.57.727 W 077.08.284

12

Adjoining the Sanitarium Building the

present Clifton Springs Hospital & Clinic was built in 1972. It is a testa-ment to the vision of its founding in 1850 by Dr. Henry Foster. His personal belief in holistic medicine has grown over the years into the present modern hospital and specialty

medical center. Services include the Springs Integrative Medicine Center where visitors can receive mineral baths, acupuncture, chiropractic care, massage therapy, herbal and other naturopathic services in addition to conventional medical care. N 42.57.600 W 077.08.229

The Sulphur Brook supplies the Swan Pond (N 42.57.570 W 077.08.247) adjacent to the hospital, then flows between The Foster Cottage and The Sanitarium. This source of the historic “Water Cure” and modern-day sulphur baths then flows beneath Main Street and The Foster Block. Enjoy the walking trail along the brook that connects the Labyrinth with downtown. N 42.57.667 W 077.08.240

Built as The Warfield House and later called The Clifton House, The Peirce Block was constructed

by Thomas W. Warfield in the 1870s. Built to accommodate travelers and summer over-flow of visiting patrons of the “Water Cure,” the property was ravaged by fire in 1888. Mr. and Mrs. Peirce later rebuilt the block, hence the change in name. N 42.57.676 W 077.08.302

The United Methodist Church was built in 1868 and expanded in 1882 to include kitchen

facilities and classroom space. As is the case with most local churches, much of the help to build the church came from Dr. Foster. A daycare center was added to the property in 2003. N 42.57.682 W 077.08.283

On July 6, 1877, the YMCA of Clifton Springs was organized. At that time, it was the smallest community in the US to have a chapter of the YMCA. In 1879, Dr. Foster had the current two-story brick building erected. N 42.57.710 W 077.08.296
