A CONTRIBUTION TO THE QUESTION OF TITLE DOMINUS

IN KOTOR (XIVXV CENTURIES)

Summary

On the basis of source material from Archives of Kotor and Dubrovnik(Ragusa), the Cadastral Book of Grbalj (so-called Roanne Manuscript, 1457)and the Statute of Kotor, we tried to show to whom and where the titledominus (lord) was given in Kotor. The example of the members of thefamous Kotor family Bua (Bucchia) was used (protovestiarios Nikola Buaand his close relative Tripe Bua). The title was succeeded by Nikolas heirsand the heirs of his son Peter, who were also protovestiarii. The knez of Kotor,who was a stranger in the city, also bore the title dominus. Important officeof judge in Kotor was reserved for the most influential noble families (Bucchia,Drago, Pasquali, Bisanti and others) who held the title dominus in the lateXIV and early XV centuries, which was a sign of social status and reputation.

THE LETTER OF KING SIGISMUND SENT FROM BELGRADE

TO THE CITIZENS OF SOPRON (NOVEMBER 7, 1427)

Summary

This paper presents a critical edition of the letter sent by the HungarianKing Sigismund from Belgrade to the municipality of Sopron in westernHungary on November 7, 1427. King Sigismund received the fortress and cityof Belgrade from the new Serbian ruler ura Brankovi at the end ofSeptember or beginning of October of the same year, according to theagreement previously made with Despot Stefan Lazarevi in Tata (1426). TheHungarian king immediately took measures to consolidate his power in theformer Serbian capital. This letter is a major source for Sigismunds activity inthe city and his plans for Belgrade. King Sigismund put Belgrade under thejurisdiction of the banate of Mava and granted the town numerous privileges.King has liberated its inhabitants of the duties levied on the entire territory ofthe Kingdom and called traders and artisans from all over to settle in Belgrade,in order to increase the number of the Catholic population of the city. Thisinvitation is also extended to the citizens and residents of Sopron. Moreover,the king ordered the city authorities to send two of Soprons artisans with theirfamilies to Belgrade.

OF GRACANICA MONASTERY NEAR VALJEVO

Summary

During the archaeological exploration of the monastery Graanica nearValjevo, which took place in 2011, a graveyard site was documentednorthwards from the church, containing numerous tombstone evidence ofburials during the 19th and 20th century. Based on tombstones bearinginscriptions from the 19th century, all of the tombstones from the same periodcan be precisely dated. Most of the tombstones were implanted into the groundaccompanied by grave contructions or horizontal tombstones. One of the nineinscriptions is dedicated to Milosav Veselinovi, whose surname has thus farmistakenly been cited as Tomi, was one of the two patrons of thereconstruction of the church in the early 19th century.

BY WHICH HE CONFIRMED THE LIBERTIES

OF THE CITIZENS OF DEBRECEN

Summary

This paper is a critical edition of the Charter of Gospodin (Lord) uraVukovi Brankovi, by which he confirmed the privileges of the town ofDebrecen, which had become his property after the death of his uncle, despoteStefan Lazarevi, and formal confirmation of King Sigismund of Hungary. Thedocument is significant because it is the first surviving Latin charter issued bythe members of the Serbian ruling dynasty of Brankovi. Also, the intitulationof the issuer is relevant to the matter of the moment of ura Brankovisacquisition of the title of despote.

When it comes to its external features, the analyzed document issimilar to the open letters. Yet again, its internal form contains all typicalelements of a charter of privileges. It was probably written by a Hungarianscribe, or, at least, by a person who followed the pratice of the Hungarianchanceries. The representatives of the citizens of Debrecen, the mayor and amember of the town council, visited their lord and asked him to confirm theirliberties. Their petition was granted in a place called Bia, near present-dayBudapest, which was another possession of Serbian ruler in Hungary. As theissuer, ura Brankovi calls himself Gospodin (Lord) and not the Despote,because it was not until the summer of the same year (1429) that he officialygained that title from Byzantine emperor.

DOCUMENTS ON PAYMENT OF PART OF THE SAINT

DEMETRIUS TRIBUTE TO DESPOTESS (DESPINA) JELENA

Summary

It is not know in detail if the so-called Serbian tribute (tribute given onSt. Demetrius Day) was paid regularly during the rule of King StefanTomaevi. In the Charter of Privileges dated November 23, 1461, the Kingemphasized that the tribute should be paid annually. Although these funds weremainly used to regulate his and debts of his predecessors, a part of a tribute waspaid to him directly. At one point Tomaevi bought asola, an expensive pieceof jewelry, borrowing the money from his mother-in-law despotess (despina)Jelena Paleolog Brankovi of Serbia. The document analyzed in this paper isa testimony of payment of a part of St. Demetrius tribute to Jelena. King Stefantransferred the right to collect the money on her in order to return the loan. Itis also the last known document which mentions Serbian tribute.

The document is an example of two-part receipt, made from twodifferent acts: a more formal charter Dubrovniks guarantee that the sum willbe paid (I) and the receipt confirmation that the money was collected (II).Along with other historical facts, the document also reveals the relationbetween Ragusan perpera and Venetian ducat at that moment and the specificintitulation of Jelena ( lord lady despotess).Also, these two acts represent a good example of the Ragusan legal practice inthe case of the handover of tribute. Usually, as the confirmation of thetransaction, a receipt (expeditoria) was issued, which could be composed ofone or two parts.

Summary

This paper is a critical edition of the paschal table from the trebnik(euchologion) belonging to the manuscript collection of the Patriarchate of Pe(Pe 76, from the 15th century), for the period 1416/14171432/33. Themain feature of this source is specific selection of the individual paschalelements and feasts. Segmentation of time of the first half of the year isrepresented by the dates of Christmas, Meatfare Day (Mesopust),Annunciation, Easter, St. George's Day, Sunday of All Saints or St. Peter'sMeatfare Day and St. Peter's Day. The Feasts from the paschal table alsorepresent the milestones of social time, whose intervals were calculated bycounting weeks and days. The paschal table includes four leap years 1420,1424, 1428 and 1432, and calculations are correct and in accordance with thecorresponding paschal letter for each year. Certain discrepancies found twotimes in the text are to be understood as miswriting, because all the otherpaschal elements are presented correctly.

This article presents the oldest Ottoman inventory of the medievaldistrict of Altin (tur. Altun-ili) which was compiled in 1477, at the latest. Itcontains demographic and fiscal data for 55 villages and two mezras. The nameof Altin is derived from Latin word altus, high, and means The Highlands(alb. Malsi). Medieval Altin, as well as Ottoman Altun-ili, encompassedNorthern Albania and southwest of Kosovo (Djakovacka Malesija, Malsi eGjakovs). The area was populated by Slavs and Albanians. In the second halfof XV century Altin was attached to the Pasha sancak. After the OttomanEmpire acquired Shkodra (Skadar) from Venice, after the siege of Shkodra in1478-79, Altin was incorporated into the newly established Iskenderiye sancak.

THE VLACHS OF PETRU NHIYE IN THE SURVEY OF VLACHSIN THE SANDJAK OF SMEDEREVO FROM 1528

Summary

Vlach nhiyes represent separate category of administrative entitieswithin Ottoman Empire. They have been special military-administrative unitsthat have existed parallel to regular nhiyes in the same area and have beenconstituted by settlements inhabited by vlachs (eflk). In the Sandjak of Kruevacthe population of vlach status was registered in the Petru and Zagrlata nhiye.

In the border territory (krajite) of Petru presence of vlachs has beenregistered since the reign of Prince Lazar of Serbia. They had a special role inmilitary service in Petru area as well as in other border areas. After the Ottomanconquest, vlachs have kept this role.
