I Vertical pump runs dry and features longer shaft

The new CSS range of vertical corrosion-resistant pumps from Crest Pumps features a long shaft of either 500 mm or 750 mm and the ability to run dry indefinitely. The new pumps suit applications such as sump emptying, recirculating plating liquids, effluent treat- ment plants and fume scrubbers.

The cantilever shaft design has no immersed bearings and is almost maintenance free. Since the bearings are above the mounting plate, there is no risk of flooding if the liquid level rises. There is no maximum immersion level and protection against fuming liquids is provid- ed by a labyrinth seal.

Other features include a dou- ble impeller which creates a liq- uid ring seal to prevent liquid ris-

ing up the shaft. The open impeller design handles solids in suspension up to 5 mm. Bearings are contained in an enclosed tubular housing for protection from the environment.

The CSS range is machined from non-metallic solid materi- als, and so pumps are robust and corrosion-resistant. Capacity is up to 65 m3/h (230 gal/min) with a head to 40 m (130 ft).

I PD pumps are fully reversible

Blackmer Mouvex P Series slid- ing vane, self-priming positive displacement pumps are designed for pumping a wide range of low or high viscosity liquids. Pumps throughout the

range are fully reversible, operat- ing equally well in either direc- tion, with powerful suction per- formance. They are capable of running for extended periods in dry suction conditions, an important feature for duties such as line stripping when off- loading tankers.

Automatic wear compensa- tion ensures long term opera- tion on difficult applications. A simple design with easy access to wetted components facilitates maintenance and minimises downtime. Ac- cording to the maker, P Series pumps are retrofittable with many pumps of other design and manufacture.

The design has substantial advantages over conventional gear pumps for a wide range of applications. A high level of mechanical efficiency results in significant savings in energy costs while, due to the wear compensation feature, the specified performance remains

| EU agreement on low voltage motor eff iciency levels

Electrical engineering giant ABB has agreed to the introduction, across Europe, of three classes of energy efficiency for electric motors. This follows agreement in October between the Euro- pean Commission and CEMEE the European Committee of Manufacturers of Electrical Machines and Power Elec- tronics. The agreement is part of the European Commission's aims to improve energy efficien- cy and reduce CO x emissions.

The agreement will be a vol- untary code, similar to that for domestic appliances, to clearly display the efficiency level. The code provides motor manufac- turers with classes eft1, eft2 and eft3, establishing a borderline between each class. All efficien- cy levels are based on the IEC 34-2 and IEC 34-1 standards.

Effl is the highest efficiency level and can be achieved by

only a handful of Europe's lead- ing motor manufacturers, includ- ing ABB. The company will be showing this classification in its catalogues at 3A load and full load, as well as stamping it on the motor's rating plate. This is a requirement of the agreement.

The efficiency levels apply only to four-pole, three-phase squirrel cage induction motors, rated for 400 V, 50 Hz, with S 1 duty class ranging from 1.1 to 90 kW, which account for the largest volume on the market. CEMEP and the European Commission are now working to formulate an agreement for 2- pole motors, which account for the second largest production volume. This is expected to be ready by April next year.

The agreement follows two years of discussions, between small, medium and large motor manufacturers, which started in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1996. The delay was due to CEMEP search- ing for a compromise between all of its members, as many stan- dard motor manufacturers do not comply with the higher agreed efficiency classes.

ABB has agreed to the introduction, across Europe, of three classes of energy efficiency for electric motors.

rotary, positive displacement 3- screw pump line. Designed for continuous operating pressures to 250 psig (17.2 bar) and flows to 55 gpm (208 1/min), the 3G series is available in ten different displacements fitted to three casing sizes.

Pump casings are produced from cast iron or alternatively from steel. Cast iron units can be equipped with lip or mechan- ical shaft seals. The pumping screws incorporate full hydraulic balance. Inlet porting can be either radial, rotatable in 90 degree increments, or axial.

Iron pumps are available with tamper resistant, built-in relief valve and straight thread or SAE 4-bolt pad inlet and out- let connections. Steel cased pumps are equipped with mechanical seals and provided with SAE 4-bolt pad connec- tions. SAE pads accept 4-bolt, O- ring sealed mating flanges, nor- mally of the socket weld style. Both iron and steel pumps are flange mounted and can be pro- vided with mating foot brackets or pump-to-C-face motor adapters. Flange mounting allows the pump outlet port to be directed radially in 90 degree increments.

The 3G series is intended for use on lubrication and control oil services for rotating machin- ery and other equipment need- ing forced lubrication, distillate fuel burners, fuel transfer and circulation and similar oil sys- tems. The product bulletin can be downloaded from www.imo- pump.com.
