Rural Minnesota Computer Adoption
•2001 76 percent of home computers were connected to the Internet, but now in 2010, 95 percent of all home computers are connected to the Internet.
•Broadband - dramatic growth trend since 2001 - will slow at it approaches 100% adoption.
Currently 25% of Rural Minnesota households do not own a computer

The United States Department of Commerce recently announced that the Blandin Foundation and 19 coalition partners have been awarded a federal Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP) grant.
Our involvement:
•In 2011 we distributed over 1,000 computers to greater Minnesota as part of this grant.
•In 2012 we have traveled to 13 communities to collect and distribute over 1,000 computers
•We look to continue to grow our presence in rural MN

Working With Organizations and Communities1. Mobile Refurbishing – Three day events. Computers
are collected, refurbished and distributed right back to the local community. 100 PC Minimum.
2. PC Delivery – Place an order with PCs for People. Cost varies based on order size, location and PCs for People’s involvement. We can do reoccurring deliveries. Minimum depends on distance 20-100.
3. PCs for Kids - Partner with Schools to make sure every family in the school has a home computer.
1. Sponsored Events - Find a sponsor to cover the cost; minimum 50 PCs.
2. Paid Vouchers – If an affiliate or PCs for People is in the area a school or organization can buy vouchers. The vouchers are given to students to turn in for a free PC. Minimum 20 vouchers.

Cost is generally $50 per PC plus delivery fees. PCs for People can manage recipient distribution events for an additional charge.

2013 Sponsor Opportunity – New Project
1. 3,000 PCs - Refurbish and Distribute computers to low income families
2. Assure all 5th grade students in selected schools have a working home PC and internet
3. Work with up to 80 schools in Minneapolis and St. Paul that have 80% or more students on free and reduced lunch
4. Provide 9,000 people with home internet access
5. Train 6,000 people on computer basics
6. Work with 80 educators to leverage new technology
7. Reuse 112.5 tons of computer equipment
8. Provide ongoing support to recipients (warranty and repairs)

•Annual Affiliate Fee – paid by the affiliate partner, which has generally been an existing Business, to get a “PCs for People in a box”. •Affiliate - provides the physical location and day to day management that a PCs for People office requires.
•PCs for People - provides the technology, processes and overview to make sure the office is successful. As a result hundreds more families in rural Minnesota have home computers.
