THE CHALLENGE
Today's trading floor is one of the most volatile and demanding environments for workstationdeployment imaginable.
Multiple high-powered workstations under the desk produce ‘heat silos’ that are uncomfortable forthe trader and damaging to the devices. The combination of heat from workstations and monitors forceair-conditioning plants to work overtime, often at full capacity and the close proximity of workstationsproduces a high level of background noise that can cause annoyance and distraction.
Locally positioned workstations are difficult to secure and are susceptible to data theft or corruption.Desk-side support can be disruptive to the trader and, with a wide range of hardware to maintain, requires a large team with a broad knowledge base on call.
Installations, Moves, Adds and Changes (IMACS) are expensive, complex, labour intensive and introducesignificant risk to first-day trading or Monday morning go-lives. The requirement for adequate disasterrecovery and the need to comply with increasing layers of legislation on this critical service arecomplicated by the mix of hardware in use.
Up until recently, ‘analogue back-racking’ provided a partial solution to these issues, but it also created itsown challenges: most systems were unable to drive high-definition video over more than 150 meters ofcopper cable and used proprietary protocol. Back-racked PCs were not of a standard form factor thuscapacity planning was limited. By definition, analogue extension couldn’t provide support for moderndigital video displays.
The demand for a truly versatile solution is immense. A solution that moves workstations away fromthe trading floor without compromising performance or data security. One that provides full supportfor multiple, digital monitors and meets or exceeds all the legislative requirements. A solutions thatis efficient, easy to maintain and provides traders with reliable, state-of-the-art tools to do their job.
The Amulet Hotkey DXM series of PCoIP Blade Workstations is this solution.

Trader Class Performance
The DXM series of PCoIP® enabled BladeWorkstations from Amulet Hotkey leveragethe latest Intel®Xeon™ processors with servergrade hardware and management tools toprovide traders in the financial markets withthe most powerful and cost effective back-racking solution.
Embedded PCoIP and graphics hardwareminimizes latency while leaving the bladeprocessors free to run trading applications atblistering speeds.
This new breed of Trader Class Blade willpropel your trading floor infrastructure intothe 64 bit era with maximum competitiveedge and minimum risk.
Smart and Efficient
Replacing desk-side PCs with back-rackedPCoIP Blade Workstations makes sense: itremoves excess heat and noise from theworkplace, simplifies maintenance andincreases availability.
Security First
PCoIP transmits ‘pixels only’ to the desktopensuring that data remains locked down andsecure in the datacentre.
IMACS de-risked
With back-racked PCoIP Blade Workstations,IMACs are performed with a click on a mousebutton in software via the connection broker. No more moving vulnerable workstationsevery weekend. What used to take days toachieve, now takes place in just a few hours.

Notes: Performance is limited by networklatency and bandwidth. For latencies upto approximately 40 ms the operation isvirtually perception free. That is, the userwill notice little or no change in theperformance of their workstation. Forlonger latencies up to and including 150mS, PCoIP deploys a selection of WANoptimisation features which minimise theimpact on performance to an acceptablelevel.

More about PCoIP
PCoIP is a ground-breaking technologythat compresses and encrypts computervideo, USB and audio data using a hostdevice and transmits it over a standardnetwork connection (using AES 256 bitencryption) to a desktop receiver or zeroclient.
The zero client decrypts anddecompresses the data streamdelivering it to the desktop peripherals. The system is completely secure (CPAaccredited versions available onrequest) and always builds video to aloss-less image making it ideal for themost demanding applications.
The zero client creates a secure interfaceto the computer making it virtuallyimpossible to gain unauthorized accessto the remote hardware or data itcontains.
The zero client stores no data, it cannotbe infected by a virus and does not havean operating system to license, maintain, or protect. In addition, all USBdevices are managed in hardware at thedesktop using black or white listsallowing complete desktop lock-downwhere appropriate.
Zero Client = Zero Risk
What is PCoIP®?PCoIP is a ground-breaking technology that allows allcomputers to be centralised in a secure, optimised datacentre.Users gain access to these remote workstations through acompact zero client which supports the standard desktopperipherals (keyboard, mouse, monitors, head-sets etc.). Theconnection between remote workstations and the zero clientis via a single network cable (copper or fibre) using AES 256bitencryption. The key advantages are uncompromised datasecurity, responsiveness and pristine real-time graphics. (Seethe side bar for more information)
PCoIP for the trading floor
Benefits to the enterpriseBack-racking Whilst the benefits of back-racking are well documented – a more efficient workplace and ease of maintenance, only a PCoIP based solution can deliver a fully functional desktop in all applications: ‘one-to-one’ power users (traders) or‘one-to-many’ VDI based operators. A common platform across the enterprise is now achievable without introducingcompromise at any level; every desktop fitted with an identical PCoIP Zero Client regardless of the application; commonhardware in the datacentre set up to fail-over in seconds and perfect for simplifying the implementation of DR provision.
Benefits to the trading floorPCoIP is the first remote desktop protocol to offercompromise free performance in back-racked applications. It provides pristine, loss-less, high-resolution, real-timegraphics to multiple monitors at the desktop. The interfaceis responsive and perfect for applications where speed andaccuracy are vital such as the trading floor. Spreadsheets, video feeds and market data are all fed to the desktopwithout the degradation or delay often associated withbacked-racked workstations. Put simply, PCoIP doesn’t getin the way.
Amulet Hotkey manufacture a range of PCoIP Blade Workstations, hardware-accelerated ‘extreme’ VDIplatforms and Zero Clients all optimised for mission and business critical applications. Contact our sales teamsfor details and references.
