Pickleball Volunteer of the MonthMike Carter-Thompson OkanaganPickleball EnthusiastsTalk about a fast mover on and off thecourts! Following an introduction topickleball in Oliver, BC in October 2012and some fine tuning in California inJanuary 2013, Mike Carter has beenburning up the courts and promotingpickleball in several Okanagancommunities.

Mike was an avid, competitiveracquetball player until a serious kneeinjury sidelined him over 10 years ago.Pickleball hasgivenhimanew focusonstaying active. Like badminton, tabletennis, volleyball and squash thetransition to pickleball came naturally toMike. He believes that this type of sport is "in his blood" ashe loved the sport immediately. It became second nature toMike to introduce new people to pickleball and coachplayerswith his abundance of knowledgeandexperience indoing the same with racquetball.

Like the people in California, who welcomed him with openarms even though he had just started to play the game, hehasbeenbusyencouragingnewplayers in the communitiesof Oliver, Okanagan Falls, Kaleden and Summerland. When he returned home from California it took him twoweeks to make contact with the Director of Okanagan FallsRecreation Centre, Janet Black and start a pickleballprogram. Janet Black enthusiastically promoted pickleballin the community and wrote a grant application forequipment such as portable nets, balls and paddles. If youare visiting Okanagan Falls, a beautiful lakesidecommunity, be sure to drop in and visit Mike and his fellow

pickleball enthusiasts. I had theopportunity to visitMikeandthe Okanagan gang this pastsummer with my husband Gord andwe had a blast. They are greatpeople and very warm andenthusiastic. Being PCOAmbassadors ourselves weencourgedMike to take a look at thebenefits of PCO membership.

But Mike didn't stop in OkanaganFalls. He visited and promotedpickleball in other surroundingcommunities such as Kaleden,Summerland, Oliver and Osoyoos.InOsoyoos he teamedupwithCarolMetcalff, PCO Ambassador for theOsoyoos area.

This is how he successfully createdthe Thompson Okanagan Pickleball Enthusiasts Club andbecame an active promoter of Pickleball CanadaOrganization.

He organized the inaugural Osoyoos PickleballTournament with Carol, a PCO sanctioned event onNovember 30-Dec 1, 2013whichwas a great success. TheThompson Okanagan Pickleball Enthusiasts now have 74members and the Club has joined Pickleball Canada. Mikesays, "The forming of TOPE and organizing tournamentscomes naturally to me. I have been doing that half my life.I have been in sports over sixty years or more."

Mike Carter is now Pickleball Canada's Area Ambassadorfor Osoyoos and continues to volunteer pickleball demosand clinics in the Okanagan area.

A big thank you and congratulations to Mike for a jobwell done!Submitted byDaveShepherd, Edited byDeniseGriffin

Pickleballers Give Back (Ontario)FOOD BANKS RECEIVE MORE THAN PICKLES

Did you know that Food Banks welcome donations of cleaning supplies (personalhygiene and household cleaning supplies)? After learningabout the need of these supplies, the 19 participants in the

recentOntarioWhitby@BrooklinPball Club and the32pickleballers in theKingswayLadderLeague'sRedandWhite Fun Tournaments, collected approximately 220personal hygiene and household cleaning supplies for2 centres in the Durham Region: All Saints AnglicanChurch's Food Bank in Whitby and Simcoe HallSettlement House in Oshawa. Both of these centreswere so appreciative of these welcomed items. On theday the donations were delivered to one of the centres, the Christmas hampers were being given out.Immediately, the volunteers at the centre placed 1-2cleaningsupply items ineachboxasa "special gift" itemfor the families. One of the directors of the centre said,"These will be so welcomed. What a great idea. Thanks."

FoodBankswelcome all sorts of cleaning supplies, including boxes of tissues;theyespecially like thosesmall bottlesof shampooand lotions, plussoap, fromhotelsandcruiseships. So, when you do your next linen closet or bathroom cabinet cleanout, gather up all those unusedtoiletries and donate them to your local Food Bank. They take the small sized containers and makeup "toiletry bags" to give out as "specials" all year. Of course, all other cleaning supplies are verywelcomed too. We had a lasagna dinnerwith bowl of Chilly and aCaesar saladwith bread, drinks and home madelemon pie for only $5.00(June Padley cookedand arranged it all). Sheannounced yesterdaythat they made a $50.00profit and donated it tothe Salvation Army FoodBank. That is pretty amazing in itself.

June is the President of Rutland Seniors Activity Centre, an ex-pickleball player who we all love. Sheis the lady in the second row from the bottom, on the right, 2nd one in wearing a red sweater. The ladybeside her on the right is Lynn Callon, secretary and excellent Pickleball player, Lynn’s husbandMikeis standing beside me top left (me in yellow shirt).

It is a wonderful group of players, friends and enthusiastic people.

One lady commented: “Coming to Pickleball is like coming home, everyone says hi and are soglad to see you.” Just one of the benefits of our great sport and keeping seniors active.

It is a joy to be part of it.

Fraser Valley/Lower MainlandPickleball

Tournaments aReality

Last month weintroduced a working group of younger pickleball playerswho have a vision for the development of a rotatingschedule of competitive tournament play in the FraserValley/Lower Mainland of British Columbia.

This month we have the pleasure of announcing thatFraser Valley Pickleball is on their way to achieving theirdesired outcomes. The leadership grouphasworked veryhard to identify partners, possible venues, tournamentformats, means of registration, setting up awebsite, costsof running a tournament, volunteer call out, and possiblesponsorships to name a few challenges.

A strong partnership with Pickleball Canada Organizationwill benefit both organizations. Fraser Valley Pickleballhas applied for PCO tournament sanctioning for twoscheduled tournaments. Pickleball Canada assisted thegroupwiththedevelopmentofaplayerwaiver form. Onceapproved , the sanctioning will provide liability insurancefor all PCO members who register for the tournaments.Winners of tournament events who are members willreceive points that will be kept on record by PCO. Inaddition FVP(Fraser Valley Pickleball) will record thesesame points to identify the top players playing in thistournament circuit.

Pickleball Canada Organization will benefit as eachtournament will be advertised as a Pickleball Canada

Sanctioned Tournament that follows IFP Rules. Playerswill be encouraged to become members of PickleballCanada.

To date 2 tournaments have been scheduled. Thesetournaments are skillLlevel tournaments. Playerswho arenot rated can use a selfLrating based on IFP ratingdescriptions. Ratingsare importantbecause theyareusedto seed players within events.

Graduation Day at Walnut Grove Recreation CentreEvery Thursday since early November introductory drop-in beginner pickleball clinics have beenofferedat theWalnutGroveRecreationCentre. Thesedrop-in sessionswere set up inpartnershipwithAlicia Stark, Programmer at the Rec Centre and Gord and Denise Griffin, PCO Ambassadors. Thedrop-in format has worked well as it is flexible, and players can join in at any time. The Rec Centreadvertised through emails to members and created posters that were distributed around thecommunity.

Gord and I talk up pickleballwherever we go. Right now weare wintering at Fort Camping,Fort Langley, BC in our motorhome and it has been easy todraw people who want to stayactive into this fun sport.

Before we knew it there were 12players joining in. Most of theparticipants had never heard ofpickleball. Some of them hadexperience with a racquet sport.Themost difficult thing for them tolearn was the 2 bounce rule butthey have been great sports andpersevered. All of them love thesocial aspect of the sport and theconnection with each other. There have been a lot of laughs and everyone helps newcomers.

OnDecember 19th these12amazingpickleball players celebrated. Theyhadvolleyed, dinked, lobbed, and smashed their way to pickleball “graduation”. Each player earned a certificate, cheese andcrackers and of course sweet dill pickles.

On January 2, 2014, due to player requests, a second session of introductory drop-in pickleball clinicshas started up. All of the players from the first session want to continue to come. Some of themwouldlike to try playing on Wednesdays or Fridays as well with the veteran pickleball players.
