Welcome to P CC - we’re glad you’re here! WE HOPE THIS BOOKLET WILL HELP YOU GET TO KNOW US SO YOU CAN GET CONNECTED WITH OUR COMMUNITY AND FIND OPPORTUNITIES TO GROW AND SERVE.

WHERE WE CAME FROM We were planted by a Norfolk based non‐denomina onal, evangelical church in 1983. The Tabernacle Church of Norfolk has its roots in the Chris an Missionary Alliance and has planted five churches in the Tidewater region since the 1940s. Each church was begun in an effort to “Know His Joy and Change His World.”

WHAT EXCITES US God is fulfilling His purposes in history: bringing glory to Himself through the work of Christ on the cross as the Holy Spirit moves in the hearts of men and women from all people groups. The work of Christ is to change man’s heart, so that what he once ran from now becomes his greatest treasure and pleasure—God Himself. What a thrill to experience such delights and to share the source at home and around the world.

WHERE WE’RE HEADED The Gospel gives us dreams. Dreams of the curse of sin reversed, God's reign covering the earth and bringing the human flourishing only He can provide. We've found that the most engaging dreams are ones He has already begun to accomplish in and through us. What began as an inner city tutoring program grew into an urban church plant and now has us dreaming about a transi on home for men in East End Newport News. Because we’ve had students from Christopher Newport University with us from the start, it seems logical that we would want to create a Chris an Study Center near the campus to introduce some students to thinking Chris anity and help others integrate their faith with their academics. Because we were a church plant ourselves, it's in our makeup to want to plant another church in Gloucester. Globally we are partnering with a church in Nairobi, Kenya, to reach people groups in Kenya, Central Asia and East Asia. We are privileged to have this connec on to the church of the global south, the church of the future!

WHO WE ARE ▶ What We Believe

We believe that the good news about Jesus Christ should be truly understood, not simply admired at arm's length. Our preaching team teaches with the goal of clarity and life applica on of Biblical truths, and our children's programs are designed with age‐appropriate concepts and language.

We believe the following eight proposi ons to be taught in Scripture. All teaching across every age level conforms to them.

We believe:

» In the inspira on of all the Scriptures by the Holy Spirit and their inerrancy as originally given, and that they are the final authority for our faith and prac ce.

» In the incarna on and virgin birth of the Lord Jesus Christ, who by His shed blood and subs tu onary death paid the redemp ve price for all our sins and for the sins of the whole world. He rose bodily from the dead and ascended into heaven to intercede for us.

» In eternal salva on of all who trust the Lord Jesus Christ as personal Savior and the eternal punishment of all who reject Him.

» In the work of God’s Spirit in the new birth, indwelling the believer, causing him to grow into the likeness of Christ and filling him with power to live a godly life and to bear witness to Jesus Christ.

» In the union of all true believers as one body in Christ.

» In the second coming of our Lord Jesus Christ to the Earth bodily to claim His own people, to vindicate Himself and to set all things in order.

▶ What is an Evangelical Church?

PCC is a Chris an, non‐denomina onal, evangelical church. Author and theologian Alister McGrath sheds some light on the term “evangelical” in the following excerpt from his book, Evangelicalism & the Future of Chris anity:

“Evangelicalism is grounded on a cluster of six controlling convic ons, each of which is regarded as being true, of vital importance and grounded in scripture. . . These six fundamental convic ons can be set out as follows:

1. The supreme authority of Scripture as a source of knowledge of God and a guide to Chris an living.

2. The majesty of Jesus Christ, both as incarnate God and Lord and as Savior of sinful humanity.

3. The lordship of the Holy Spirit. 4. The need for personal conversion.

6. The importance of the Chris an community for spiritual nourishment, fellowship and growth.

All other ma ers have tended to be regarded as ‘ma ers of indifference,’ on which a substan al degree of la tude and diversity may be accepted — but a diversity that is itself grounded in the New Testament.”

▶ Leadership / Staff / Elders

We are an independent congrega on with close theological and philosophy‐of‐ministry es to the Consor um of churches planted by the Tabernacle Church of Norfolk. Ordina ons, calling of pastors, missions strategies and training events are among the ac vi es our partnership affords.

We are led by a team of elders, men who meet the qualifica ons found in the New Testament and who have been recognized as servant leaders in the church. In addi on to monthly mee ngs, the elders meet weekly to pray for the needs of the Chapel. Annual Prayer & Ac on Goals as well as a five‐year Strategic Plan are constructed by the elders in consulta on with the staff and membership.

The church pastoral staff implements the direc on the elders set. The staff’s role is to equip the congrega on for doing the work of the ministry.

Home Group Leaders serve as pastors in the life of the Chapel. In addi on to leading groups, these men care for the whole person welfare of group members.

Elder and staff contact info is listed on page 19.

▶ Prayer & Ac on Goals for the 2015‐16 Ministry Year

With this in mind, we constantly pray for you, that our God may count you worthy of his calling, and that by his power he may fulfill every good purpose of yours and every act prompted by your faith. We pray this so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ. ‐ 2 Thessalonians 1:11‐12

Paul makes it clear that churches will have “good purposes” ‐ they will have goals. And they will own them ‐ “good purposes of yours.” These purposes are linked to ac on which is “prompted by your faith.” They are goals that can only come about as God’s people iden fy what He is calling them to strive for and trust Him to fulfill.

At the Chapel our team of elders leads by carefully and prayerfully se ng goals. When you commit to taking their leadership seriously, God promises you some “advantage:”

Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you. ‐ Hebrews 13:17

Our annual Prayer & Ac on Goals are just that. They call us to pray for the purposes God puts on our hearts. They call us to act in faith on those purposes. When each of us commits to exploring ways to advance our goals, the results are amazing.

Our goals don’t describe everything we will do in the coming year. Rather they iden fy areas that are in some way broken and need to be fixed or they are areas in which God is on the move and He would have us build upon what He is doing.

Word To understand the world to come in ways that change His world today. » Read and discuss 50 Days of Heaven by Randy Alcorn. But according to his promise we are wai ng for new heavens and a new earth

in which righteousness dwells. — 2 Peter 3:13

» Iden fy your evangelism style and put it to use in a context you enjoy already. But grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ’s gi . — Ephesians 4:7

Witness | Global To know His joy by serving a fellow refugee.

To change His world by gaining new Perspec ves on it. » Read the Perspec ves on the World Chris an movement website, then adopt one par cipant to pray for weekly.

Declare his glory among the na ons, his marvelous works among all the peoples! — Psalm 96:3

▶ Freedom to Dream Campaign

God has placed four very important dreams on the heart of the PCC community. This capital campaign is about removing the hindrances and restraints that keep us from making these dreams a reality.

Chris an Study Center at Christopher Newport University to provide a place for students to discover and integrate faith with academics; Gloucester Church Plant: a Bible‐teaching, missions‐minded, small group‐oriented church across the York River; Transi on Home in East End, Newport News to help men transform their lives through the Gospel, a healthy environment, mentoring, educa on and job prepara on; Expanded PCC Youth & Children’s Ministry to be er equip families and to see the next genera on embrace the Gospel and love to share it.

▶ Signposts

Plug into PCC, get connected with others, become equipped for ministry and grow in your faith — that's what Signposts is all about. PCC’s mission statement is “Knowing His Joy, Changing His World,” and we believe that in order to experience joy and par cipate in change, we all must be growing in our faith and living out a life that proclaims the good news of Jesus to our community and to the world.

▶ Childcare

Childcare for preschool children is provided at most ac vi es, and at major events childcare expands to include children up to 4th grade. PCC maintains a comprehensive childcare policy that includes background checks for all childcare workers and other safety precau ons. Childcare is not provided for home groups or other mee ngs held off‐site, although many of these off‐site groups do offer babysi ng. (This is arranged by the host, and par cipa ng families are asked to contribute to the cost of the babysi ng.) Off‐site babysi ng is not arranged by PCC and therefore not subject to PCC’s childcare policy.

▶ Tithes & Offerings

We believe that God has entrusted to us as a body of believers a ministry both at home and abroad, and that He has commi ed to us as individuals enough resources in me, talent and finances to accomplish that ministry. By sound teaching and tac ul presenta on of ministry costs, the PCC family is encouraged to “excel in the grace of giving” (2 Corinthians 8:7). It is this principle of stewardship that permits PCC to par cipate in God’s priori es in our world.

PCC’s income is derived en rely from the thes, offerings and special project gi s of those who worship at the church. There are no special endowments from other sources. All income is spent as specified by the Board of Elders and reflects the priori es of the church for the year. The director of administra on and worship and financial administrator are responsible to the BOE for the expenditures of funds. Envelopes are offered for your use but not assigned. White envelopes are for tax‐deduc ble dona ons. Green envelopes are used to pay for services received (a book, a retreat fee, etc.). All loose checks or cash not in an offering envelope will be used en rely for local ministry needs. Records of annual giving will be kept for all individuals listed in the fellowship directory and for single gi s that exceed $250. Annual statements will be mailed by January 31 of each year. Online giving is available on the PCC website and app.

▶ Short Term Missions

One of the unique aspects about our approach to missions is that we want many people from PCC to have the opportunity to serve on a short term team. Each year PCC organizes several interna onal trips. Spending two to three weeks in another country will expand your view of who God is and open your eyes and heart to see and love the world differently.

WORSHIP & MUSIC ▶ Sunday Services

Sunday services are the heart of corporate life at PCC. While community, teaching, worship, service and many other aspects of our Chris an life are experienced and lived out through many other venues at PCC throughout the week, the Sunday morning gathering is the one me that we are all together to express our common faith in Jesus Christ. It is the place where newcomers are most o en first encountered and engaged. It is the place that we get the best picture of the size and diversity of the PCC community.

The morning begins at 9:00AM with our first worship service, Core Discipleship classes and youth (high school and middle school) and children’s Sunday School. At 10:15AM we’ve set aside a half hour called Hal ime, which is a great opportunity to connect with friends as you grab a cup of coffee. Our second worship service, Core Discipleship classes, and programs for elementary and 5th and 6th starts at 10:45AM.

▶ Worship Team

PCC has a thriving music ministry and u lizes many talented musicians to lead the congrega on in worship through music each week as well as at special events. We
