The overall success of South Bank food retailing hinges on the relevance of the concepts, quality of the operators, and the fit-out design within the context of the sub-precincts. Previous winner ‘Excellence in Food Retailing – Little Stanley Street 2014’

WHY THE COUNTRY’S BEST OPERATORS ARE MOVING TO SOUTH BANKThe most high-profile food and beverage concepts are increasingly viewing South Bank as their next destination. The mixed use development precinct, located just a few minutes from Brisbane’s CBD, is a unique mix of world-class restaurants and pristine natural surrounds which attract more than ten-million local and international visitors each year.

And it’s easy to see why.

Whether it’s to soak up the stunning view of the pristine city, enjoy the ever-changing program of entertainment, eat at the diverse selection of restaurants or take in the culture of the region at the world-renowned art galleries, the precinct truly caters to every taste.

These attractions are also why some of Brisbane’s best operators are choosing to open their doors in the area. The seven day economy, large cultural precinct and commercial community coupled

with the precinct’s diverse markets including residential, visitors and workers has attracted some of the most prominent names in the food and beverage industry.

This has seen new concepts such as Zeus, The Charming Squire, Max Brenner and Stokehouse first launch their brands into the Brisbane market with phenomenal success.

Managing Director of the Van Haandel Group, Frank van Haandel, said the architecture of the site and riverfront setting were major drawcards for Stokehouse to open its doors at South Bank.

“With both river frontage and CBD views, we could not think of a more suitable location than South Bank to expand our group into Brisbane,” Mr van Haandel said

To further enhance its individuality, South Bank has been divided into three main precincts –

Little Stanley Street/Grey Street, the Parklands and River Quay, with each precinct strategically designed to attract a diverse range of visitors to the area.

Little Stanley Street features a range of cafes and multicultural restaurants and is connected to Grey Street through a series of alfresco breezeways, with dining options dotted throughout. Meanwhile, the Parklands offer a family-friendly location complete with a unique man-made beach, numerous take-away choices and picnic grounds. In the planning phase is also a food court redevelopment which will activate the Parklands area even further. Finally, River Quay is home to five of Brisbane’s premiere dining destinations which offer sweeping river views.

The precincts have been further enhanced by the construction of a number of large commercial office buildings which have expanded into Melbourne Street and the surrounding area,

taking advantage of a location adjacent to the CBD with a more relaxed atmosphere.

The final piece of South Bank is Anthony John Group’s new development, Southpoint which will deliver Brisbane’s second five-star Emporium Hotel. Additionally, the project is set to become one of the largest transport-orientated development (TOD) projects in Queensland and on completion will feature 221 luxury apartments and over 23,500m2 of A-Grade commercial office space, including Flight Centre’s new global headquarters.

This expansion will add to the existing residential community, which includes a range of residential apartment buildings, units and townhouses. Recent intense urban renewal investment in the area has also made it one of the fastest growing locales in Brisbane.

Although it is easy to see why people would love to live in one of the largest food and

cultural hubs in Brisbane, another drawcard is the accessibility of the precinct, with all forms of transport servicing the district courtesy of South Bank Train Station, Brisbane City Cat ferry service, buses and walking bridges linking to the CBD and surrounds.

Adding to the cultural appeal of the area are the precinct’s partners who include Queensland Art Gallery, The Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA), Queensland Museum, the State Library of Queensland, Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre and Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC).

There are also currently 12 educational institutes surrounding South Brisbane, which cater to 80,000 plus students. Major educational facilities within the South Brisbane hub include Queensland University of Technology, South Bank Institute of Technology, Griffith University and Central Queensland University.

IF ALL OF THIS IS ANYTHING TO GO BY, SOUTH BANK IS SET TO ATTRACT EVEN

MORE INTEREST IN THE FUTURE.

RECIPIENTS

Jim McConaghy and Robert McConaghy started together in business in 1969 with their first development being a warehouse property. A shopping centre in Brassall at Ipswich followed and they then embarked on developing and managing a portfolio of shopping centres across regional Queensland and New South Wales.

As they each started their own operations their dedication to their communities and retailers continued.

Jim and Robert have maintained a strong commitment to regional and rural areas through their respective companies today and continue to maintain a hands-on involvement across all their operations.

They have compiled a long list of remarkable achievements along the way with nearly 100 years of combined experience between them in the property sector.
