PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEGreg Lush
Our club is very fortunate to have so many dedicated volunteers committed to providing great activities that involve you and your Porsche. While that is great news, sometimes it can be challenging to choose the right event to attend. As suggested in past messages, we encourage everyone to try all of the different events. To help the new members and more seasoned members alike, this President’s message is committed to providing some insight about key events. Breakfast Club A monthly meeting that covers all the club business, followed by a board meeting (open to all members). Close to 100 cars show up and enjoy the breakfast and free coffee regularly. Every Second SaturdayAutoKennel provides an opportunity to hang out with one another and check out the consignment cars for sale. Paul and his father have been great supporters of OCR for many years.
Fall TourThe last couple of years we have provided a tour, limited to 20 cars (which sells out within minutes); it is a multi-night driving event. We explore
different areas and commonly drive between five and six hours per day with plenty of stops. This is a must attend event. Other Eating Events These are strategically placed around Orange County and are simply times to visit with others sharing common interests. Interestingly, these all seem to pull different groups of people to attend, which means each of these gives you a great opportunity to meet a lot of different OCR members. AutoX I am a little biased towards our performance driving events. AutoX (autocross) is competing against the clock while navigating around cones on a 1- mile course. Over 100 cars monthly show up to compete with one another, ranging from showroom stock to race prepared. This is the best way to really experience your Porsche in a safe, inexpensive environment. Julian An annual drive from Orange County to Julian (about 2 hours). This drive covers all types of driving conditions and when you arrive, the fresh apple pie is fantastic. A great
drive and destination should not be missed on this up-and-back drive.
Streets of Willow (Drivers Education) Our second performance driving event happens at a race track. The venues change; however, this November we will be going to The Streets of Willow. Streets is a great and challenging road course just past Palmdale. Watch for details and come up the afternoon before the DE and join us all for dinner. NOTE: These events do require a minimum of four AutoX events. Toys for TotsOur annual event in conjunction with the military to collect toys for military families just before the Christmas season. An afternoon gathering that typically lasts less than two hours. I am looking forward to seeing you all at these fantastic events. Please make sure that you are always checking the PCA/OCR calendar and our Facebook page (http://www.pcaocr.com/?page=6) for the latest information on these and our other activities.

EDITOR’S NOTESGarey Cooper
Wherever you go, there you are. It’s a little déjà vu for me this month, as I write this column at 35,000 feet or so, flying intercontinental with Virgin Atlantic. Midway between the continents actually. Mrs. Cooper and I have had a lark in Ireland and the United Kingdom. I’m writing United Kingdom for now anyway, as it seems Scotland is going to vote for full independence as I am writing this. The United Kingdom may revert to England and Wales, unless of course the former kingdom of Mercia decides to reconstitute itself.
Driving the wee country lanesWhile on the Emerald Isle and in Merry Old England, we drove of course, and on the “wrong side” of the road at that. It is to be certain on the left side, a legacy we understand of a time when two armored equestrians could ride by one another with the sword and scabbard on the right side.I’ve now done this many times, and
after the first day or so it slips back to a pattern. The pattern consists of a few components:1. Each morning Mrs. Cooper goes to the wrong side of the car and we collide trying to both wedge into the same side, spilling coffee, golf balls, and our cool weather ephemera.2. We dive into the mental arithmetic of metric conversions, KPH/MPH, miles/kilometers, and impossibly quaint village names.3. Narrow lanes get narrower and huge trucks with trailers go by in the opposite direction leaving a shower of leaves, small pebbles, and minor loosely rooted plants raining down upon your vehicle.
4. With narrowed eyes we scan the side of buildings or little posts for any street name to verify our GPS is not sending us to lower Slobovia. That is when they have bothered to even post a street name as they can change every block.
For a woman who was gifted with many things except a sense of direction (barring an uncanny sixth sense of location for the nearest Nordstrom), Mrs. Cooper is an able navigator. She is especially keen when it comes to locating golf courses.
Driving the wee country lanes, part deuxSo what did we drive? Firstly a Renault FLUENCE. Since the Renault brand is most remarkable here in the US by its complete absence, it is likely you will not have heard of this model. After two weeks in this car, the best I can say is that it was competent and kept rain and those loose small plants off our faces. If that sounds like it is faint praise, then so it shall be.
The next vehicle we rented in old blighty was a Kia, and this was a nice little roller. We do have Kia in the US and if they can produce a vehicle like this, Porsche needs to keep upping their game, as they have been doing.
Both cars were diesels and most of the cars we saw on the road were diesels, including a diesel Panamera. The ever thrifty folks over there understand the better mileage and range one gets with a diesel. Porsche claims one can range over 1,000 miles (more than this in kilometers), provided that your bladder will last. So, every car running by you clatters along as only diesels can.
Porsche thingsHow about our own dear Orange Coast Region? It’s quite fine, thank you. We have some rallys coming up as I write this. I recommend trying these instead of partners’ counseling as a way of testing your relationship’s true depth. I say that of course “tongue in cheek,” as they are always fun and they do demand a certain pairing of activities to participate. And if any division does creep in, there is always a pub at the end of it all. Try a cool Guinness to wash away the miles.
We also have some end-of-year celebrations to insert into your calendar. These are great mixers even if you haven’t made it to any events during
California here I come...

Book ReviewFast Ladies: Female Racing Drivers 1888 to 1970
by Jean-Francois Bouzanquetpublished by Veloce Publishing, UK
Review by Bruce Herrington
The heroines whose brief biographies are compiled in this book, are indeed ladies, starting with the preface by the Marquise de Montaigu. Though members of the nobility were not the only ones who could afford a car to race, in the early days the female racers were all married and are listed as Mrs. So-and-so, or The Honorable …, something one does not think about these days. It is a book about the ladies, not race results or even just their on-track lives. A fascinating read about real people albeit mostly upper crust. And the term “racing” in the sub-title should be understood as ‘competition’ because from the ‘30s on, many of the women presented were rallyists, not circuit racers.
Divided into seven chapters, the documentation of these ladies and their successes (or adventures, as the case may be), ranges from “1900, the very beginning” to “Formula 1.” In addition to the biographies, each chapter begins with a paragraph expanding on the concept of the title. There are also a few summary write-ups of significant
‘eras’ in the more or less chronological presentation.
Amazing to this reviewer, is the depth of information and pictures contained in FAST LADIES about pre-WWI women drivers, and especially the number of pictures from the ‘30s on. It seems that European information archives are much more comprehensive than American. Just looking at the pictures and reading the captions can leave one in awe of how these women (contemporaries of grand- mothers or great-grandmothers of current readers) handled these massive cars on crude roads, with very primitive support facilities, and nothing in the way of ‘crowd control’.
The first woman to enter races, Camille du Gast, finished 33rd out of 122, in the 1901 Paris-Berlin race, in part because of being able to afford a very good car since her husband was manager of a
Paris Department Store. Her story gets more interesting after that success in motor racing.
The first English woman racing driver was Dorothy Levitt who won her class in the 1903 Southport Speed Trial. Most infamous might be Violette Morris who won medals in cars, Olympic woman’s shot-put and Javelin, was a boxer, and, in modern parlance, a ‘dyke’. Her sexual preferences got her in trouble with the French sporting authorities. Surprisingly, she found the Nazi authorities more tolerant, and became an all too effective anti-resistance spy for the Germans.

Walter’s Porsche, a premier Porsche dealership in Riverside, CA, unveiled the Road to Riverside web series last month. The thought process, of course, was to build local interest in the storied Porsche brand. The web series gives customers an in-depth look at select Porsche vehicles. It also provides some laughs, drama, and excitement. Filmed both on location at the Walter’s Porsche and at various Southern California spots, the Road to Riverside episodes each give viewers a taste of humor while sparking a collective intrigue. The locations are perfect to show off the ins and outs of Porsche vehicles. Local roads lined with orange groves and the California sunset provide the gorgeous backdrop to the story that each film tells.
Written and directed by Julian White, owner of WebVideoVision.com, the Road to Riverside series captures the fascination of the Porsche brand.
White presents not only the stylish new vehicles, but gives viewers a look at Walter’s Porsche in a whole new way. The use of state-of-the-art film equipment, lighting, editing, and a small crew allows White to create something special.
You’ve never seen Porsche quite like this.
Road to Riverside utilizes a creative way of placing the message. In the episodes, the viewer meets a variety of characters. Each of these characters bring a unique way of telling the Porsche story. In one episode, the viewer sees a man dressed in a tuxedo while reviewing the 2015 Porsche Macan, while in another story, a mullet-topped, Marty McFly stunt double discusses the interesting features of the revamped 2015 Porsche Targa. The Road to Riverside web series is unlike anything you’ve seen before.
Viewable on YouTube at the Walter’s Porsche channel, Road to Riverside has already created a significant buzz. Both new and longtime Porsche owners have taken a liking to the web series. Views and subscriptions on the Walter’s Porsche YouTube channel jumped after the initial launch. In fact, viewers are eagerly awaiting another installment in the series.
Check out the all-new Walter’s Porsche Road to Riverside web series on youtube.com/waltersporsche, or visit waltersporsche.com and click the link on the main page to catch the latest in Road to Riverside.

So you are either thinking of joining the Porsche Club of America or the time has come for you to renew your annual membership. Yes, times are tough, that $46 bucks could go to next month’s cable bill so you can see the new movies on HBO. As some television ads would say, “It is less than a dollar a week, less than a Starbucks coffee a week.” Some of you have been members for many years, check out our monthly magazine the Pandemonium (Pando for short) and you will see two members who have been in the club for over 40 years and five members who have renewed over 30 years. We must be doing something right.
PCA/OCR has over 1300 primary members and counting “associate”
members, we are approaching 2200 members. I like counting both primary and associate members because the car is shared and enjoyed by both. Considering that our region encompasses all of Orange County and some members from nearby counties, that is a lot of Porsches in a small area. And to think we really only have a small percentage of all the Porsches in Orange County. Overall PCA National has 141 Regions in 13 Zones. The title “National” is actually a misnomer in that it also covers all of Canada. Orange Coast Region is in Zone 8 and the Zone has 13 Regions. These Regions cover all of Southern California, Arizona and Southern Nevada. In all, you are a member of the largest single marque car club in the
World. Being a part of it is something to be proud of.
Okay, so my $46 bucks go to a “large” organization that doesn’t benefit anyone other than our large administrative staff. Au contraire, National has four staff members that are paid. If you ever need to contact them, or if you are ever back in Columbia, MD and visit them, you will find them extremely helpful. Stop in and say “hello.” As far as OCR, we are all volunteers and devote a lot of time to make sure our members have a great experience with the Club. Garey Cooper still writes of our “multi storied OCR tower” and I guess I have never been given a key, as I have never seen it.

An Old Timer Tries Auto CrossStory by Malcolm BacaAt 73 and having driven a car for 59 years, if I was to pick the most exciting and exhilarating thing I have experienced in car performance…autocross would have the pole position. Growing up in a small oil town called Avenal in central California, we lived and breathed ¼-mile drag racing; to me, it was the ultimate signature of automotive performance. When I was 14 years old, once a month my friends and I would head north of Bakersfield, CA to Smokers Inc, one of the first ¼- mile drag strips in America. Long before NHRA formalized and regulated drag racing, Smokers Inc. of Bakersfield created the original ¼-mile drag strip on an abandon air field in about 1951. This is where Big Daddy Gartlett got his start. It’s from this ¼-mile drag racing culture that my views of automotive performance were shaped by pure ¼-mile acceleration.
Hence, my motivation to own a Turbo S with PDK transmission, twin turbos, 530 hp, and 515 lbs of torque with 4/wd launch control…need I say more about Porsche’s reputation and signature of excellence in acceleration? I have to admit, holding the brake down and bringing the rpm’s up to 5k and releasing the brake for a straight line launch is not technically very difficult, nor does it require much skill with a PDK transmission eliminating manual shifting.
Recently having joined PCA/OCR, I met David Wright at a PCA breakfast and as he described with great enthusiasm autocross, I was intrigued and wanted to try it. Why? 1) My ¼- mile driving skills are one dimensional, 2) I wanted to discover and enjoy Porsche’s full realm of automotive excellence in all facets of performance,
3) I need to substantially improve my driving skills, thereby improve my safe driving skills and 4) autocross hooked me on the first lap. Plus I was impressed with David Wright’s skill which is relatively new to motorcross.
In 59 years of driving, I’ve never experienced the adrenaline rush, eye, foot and hand coordination and the driving challenge that engulfed all my senses with pure exhilaration like PCA autocross at El Toro. Once I parked my ego on the shelf and ran the risk of embarrassment, I knew my existing skills would display how little I know about driving a Porsche. In reality, it was quite contrary…all the participants willfully shared their knowledge, and like at all PCA events, everyone I encountered was friendly, helpful and collectively represented a vast pool of Porsche knowledge that I could learn from…this is why I joined PCA.

LeLesch Team Wins Shake, Rattle & Roll Rally,A Gimmick Car Rally presented by PCA/OCR
July News: Mike and Bonnie LeLesch navigated their Porsche on the circuitous roads about north Orange County to claim the best score and the GOLD Medal in the Shake, Rattle & Rally gimmick rally event on Sunday, July 20. The event routing took the contestants over roads in the area affected by the March 2014 Fullerton/Brea/La Habra Earthquake. The LeLesch’s battled the team of C.L. Jarusik and Nancy Troast for the victory, ultimately besting them by one point to capture the GOLD medal.
The SILVER medal winning Jarusik/Troast team was, in turn, pressed hard by the two Bronze medal winning teams of Mark & Tina Trewatha and Rick & Andrea Hayes. The event drew a field of 26 teams, and it was good to see the members of the teams that finished had smiles on their faces and were all still talking to one another. Viewing the podium finishers, one of the competitors was heard to say: “This proves that on any given day, luck may win out over skill.” In that vein, it was interesting to note that approximately
50 percent of the finishers achieved scores of 50% or better.
The rally route in this event was designed by OCR Member Mark Johnson, and the event was produced by OCR’s Rallymeister Larry Moore. At the festive finish party held at TGI Fridays in the Outlet Mall in Orange, the Rallymeister congratulated the medalists and thanked the participating members for coming out to enjoy their wonderful cars on this beautiful day.

Ever hear that one? Those changes seem to happen more all the time. Being a Technical Editor, or whatever this appointed position is now, presents some changes that yours truly struggles with.
I have learned 911s the hard way since 1971. I learned to adjust my Weber carburetors mostly because I wanted to know how the world’s best carburetor worked and to save money.I mastered setting the ignition timing and distributor “dwell” to a perfect 38 degrees for the same reason.
I would have to know how to service and repair my Porsche, for cost
considerations, and since I was a certified Aircraft engine and airframe mechanic, I should know how to maintain a 911.
I bought my first factory Werks Shop Manual within a week of buying my 911 and I joined PCA and the Orange Coast Region that same week.
Forgive me but this gets into the old days, but one of the most interesting things I soon discovered about being a PCA member was a feeling of belonging to something special and being a Porsche owner, back then, was not a status symbol.
Porsche was know for fantastic handling and reliability, and winning such things a as fuel efficiency class at LeMans. Only a Porsche aficionado got worked up over these awards. Nobody else even knew what they were.
Porsche owners helped each other with learning how their Porsche worked and how to fix things. Some thought-to-be-secrets of keeping your Porsche out of the shop were shared from one person’s experience to another, and likely would end up in the “Ask the Technical Chairman” and maybe later on complied in the Up Fixen articles that were entirely contributed by the worldwide PCA membership.

PCA-OCR Breakfast Meeting’s Guest SpeakerArticle by Monica Asbury
Lee Rice of Rice’s Performance Porsches, was September’s PCA-OCR Breakfast Meeting’s Guest Speaker.
Lee’s basic message was to encourage all members to share their stories and what they’ve learned about the mechanics of their Porsches with other members.
We’re adding a new feature to Lee’s “Rice’s Ramblings” Article, “Ask a Mechanic.” If you have a question about your Porsche, please send in your question to Lee at [email protected] or 714-539-1042 (reasonable hours, please).
Know someone who would be a great guest speaker at our Monthly Breakfast Club Meetings? Someone members would find interesting, appealing and present automotive-related material (non-commercial in nature)? If so, please contact Monica Asbury at [email protected].
28 PANDEMONIUM October 2014
A beautiful day greeted all who attended the annual New Member Picnic on Saturday, August 9, 2014. Once again, we chose the Laguna Niguel Regional Park for the festivities. Monica Asbury and the Goodie Store team welcomed the attendees and provided a commemorative cup cooler to each family as they arrived.
With approximately 120 new and existing members in attendance, we feasted on a great barbeque lunch of grilled hamburgers, hot dogs, salad, chips, condiments, cold beverages and dessert! A big thank you must go out to our Grill Masters, Chris Brooksby and Craig Adams!
While socializing and snacking, everyone could admire the bevy of gorgeous Porsches that adorned the parking lot. What a wonderful sight to behold!
One of the activities of the day involved Peggy Huddleston, our Charity Director, selling 50/50 “split the pot” tickets to benefit our charity, Semper Fi. A surprised Nancy Troast held the lucky ticket that was drawn for half the pot! Later on, our Rallymeister, Larry Moore, spoke to the crowd and highlighted all the different activities available to club members while his wife, Gloria, rounded up the large group of new members for a group
photo by Mark Johnson. The photo featured 50+ new members to the club.
My sincere thanks to all who attended with extra thanks to those who volunteered to help put on this great event: Jerry O’Donnell, Doug & Maureen Fedele, Richard Wilbur, Scott Fleener and a special thank you to my wife Catherine for all her help. For those of you who missed this yearly event held to welcome the newest Club members, you may want to plan on attending next year.
It was truly GOOD FUN!

the year. I recommend attendance to all, just say hello to another member, and I’ve never seen any member shun a chance to talk about their own Porsche. Look at our website or the calendar in this magazine for the actual dates. I am currently in “airplane mode” and can’t get to them.
There is also still a chance to get in an Autocross. Hurry, before our beloved El Toro goes away!
Smile USA ‘cause you’re specialAs quaint as the “auld sod” is, once you’re away you realize how lucky we are to be in the “Excited States”....and nearly everyone I spoke to mentioned either having visited or wanting to visit our “sea to shining sea.”
So to conclude, be happy you happen to live in our messy melting pot called America, and don’t forget those Amber waves of grain!
Book Review... Continued from Page 9FAST LADIES tells another interesting story of a woman racer, with possible espionage involvement, is that of Hellé Nice. Allegations of involvement with the Gestapo, first made in 1949 by Louis Chiron, were never proven, but ended her career of racing cars borrowed from various owners/lovers. Then there was that photo of General Von Richthofen, found in her personal effects after her death. Other stories, eye-opening to this reviewer, are about women racing at Le Mans in the ‘30s, and even setting long-distance records in cars built by their husbands. Unreal, to a southern Californian at least, are pictures showing ladies driving open cars, some
without windscreens, on snow covered roads. Also at odds with modern practice, these ladies are shown driving race cars whose bonnets were taller than their shoulders! And macho as these race drivers might be considered , these ladies are shown racing, in skirts, on over hundreds of miles of public roads, in open cars!
Yes, there is Porsche content: Not only are Spyder racers (notably Denise McCluggage) and rallyists in cars ranging from Gmund Coupes to a ‘75 911S included, but it is amazing how often the words “Huschke von Hanstein” show up in the biographies of Fast Ladies!
If you have ever followed motor racing/rallying history, it is interesting to be able to put a face, and a personality, with a long known name. And some of the unknown names, like Annie Soisbault, have really spectacular stories to tell!
FAST LADIES consists of 176 9¼ x11½ inch pages, profusely illustrated (mostly black & white of course), and should be available for $59.95 from your favorite bookseller (ask for it), or from http://www.motorbooks.com.

Forty-Six Bucks... Continued from Page 13
Now that you see we do not soak up the members’ monies, you wonder where that money goes. Well, for that membership dues you get two very good magazines. The Panorama is the National magazine and comes every month neatly wrapped up in a plastic wrapping so that your postal worker can’t take a peak. You also get our Region’s magazine, the Pando that I mentioned earlier. This magazine is supported by both our advertisers and our membership dues. The cost of printing, mailing and various other outlays is a major portion of the Club’s budget annually. We would like to add more advertising, and we do have a waiting list, but we need more articles to ensure that it is not an advertisement with a few articles, but rather a magazine with some ads. If you have any stories, experiences or something the members would be interested in, please send it in to our staff.
They don’t have to be polished stories, we can help with that. We’ll also like your photos...of you and your car in interesting places, etc.
Almost every month we have an Autocross that even though it normally is a positive cash flow, still requires the capital of the Region to guarantee our commitment. I hope you either try Autocross or at least go out and watch one of our events. Did you know that we own the truck which is out at the track, all of the radios which are used, the timing equipment and computers to keep the times, the cones and all of the other related equipment? Again, all of the volunteers at Autocross are just that, volunteers. It takes a lot of planning and coordination to pull off these monthly events. If you see the volunteers out there, thank them, they will appreciate it.
Our monthly gatherings (Breakfast Club Meeting, Gathering at Krispy Kreme, BurgerBahn dinner and the Porsches and Pancakes breakfast) are all non-cost events. We have picked up the cost of drinks at the Original Mike’s meeting to benefit the members who attend. Original Mike’s does not charge us for the room and this is the only breakfast that they prepare on Saturdays. Please have breakfast if you are hungry, the room is no cost due to the breakfast income.
Most of our driving and rally events are no cost events also. We sometimes collect $10 per car, but that is for prizes (medals with lanyards) or miscellaneous expenses. All that is not used is forwarded to the charity account. The people who set up these tours/driving events are volunteers…see a trend here?
Let’s talk about Charity. Charity is a large part of the goal of the Club. We make sure that we try and help those that are in need. We have benefited the CHOC Hospital Children’s Cystic Fibrosis fund, the Orangewood Children’s Home and now the Semper Fi Fund. We have a donation box at most of our events and we have various means of increasing our donations such as silent auctions and our Hearts and Garages Tour. We are able to provide an annual cash donation to the charity of the Club’s choice. It really makes the heart feel good to help those in need. We indirectly help other charities also such as our contribution to the website administrator for our Reutterwerks email updates which you receive on Club updates. By the way, we do not share our email list or mailing list with ANY advertiser, to ensure you do not receive spam emails. John Dunkle contributes the $1000
we send to him to www.Rennwish.org, which benefits homeless children in Haiti. Below is his note to the Organization this year.
Okay, I hope that this gives you a little bit more incentive when you get ready to write that check or pay online for your next membership dues. Also remember that most of our advertisers give a discount to OCR members, so be sure and mention that you are a member. Please also mention the Club to anyone you know who has a Porsche or that you see hopping into one. You might be surprised; they may already be a member and you have a connection.
Good afternoon, Denise.I hope that this finds you well and thank you very much for all you do for the children. I could not do all this without you. Also today I send the money with control #xxxx for the education tuition, fees and uniforms for the children with the foster mothers. This month is special because it comes from the hearts of some people in a Porsche Club in CA of the United States. Please know that the people from there don’t forget the children, OK? Please give a big hug from my wife and myself for a wonderful September and may God watch over all. Your brother always, John

An Oldtimer Tries Auto Cross... Continued from Page 15
I wish I could take the time to describe everything I experienced at autocross…but to avoid turning this article into the length of War and Peace…my intent is to share with other owners like myself a driving experience that I will talk about for the rest of my life. All new drivers are assigned an instructor; Mike Oest was mine…what an awakening and an epiphany to witness his driving skills and racing knowledge up close. By analogy, it was the equivalent of watching up close Arthur Rubinstein playing Rachmaninoff‘s 2nd Piano Concerto on a 12-foot Steinway. Mike’s driving skills, like Rubinstein’s, created sounds and beauty that were awe-inspiring. I instantly realized how much there was to learn that would increase my joy and pleasure of owning and driving a Porsche.
Although my driving skill level is at “Chopsticks” level, there was immense excitement knowing how much there was to learn. No matter what year or model of Porsche you may drive, you
instantly will verify the reality of your driving skills and better appreciate your Porsche’s automotive brilliance. For a novice like me, motorcross is not a race against other drivers, it’s an opportunity for me to improve my driving skills and bond with the engineering brilliance that goes into every Porsche. Plus, How Sweet It Is to have the rare opportunity to accomplish all this under safe conditions, without breaking the law or endangering anyone or getting a ticket.
As to my first autocross performance, intentionally I have few comments…I was probably the day’s best serial killer for osterizing orange cones. My first run was an absolute challenge just to stay on the course...but as bad as I was, Mike (my instructor) was the epitome of forbearance and driving knowledge and skills. Based on how David Wright talked about his instructor, all OCR instructors are special like Mike Trout is to the Angels. Will I try it again? Let me quote Arnold Schwarzenegger, “I’ll be back!”
Quick note: having just finished my 2nd autocross with Don Costello my instructor, there are not words of space enough in this article to convey the level of excellence and experience a beginner like me gets access to. The quality of the autocross instruction is worth the price.
Let me summarize my first autocross driving experience with a quote from Sir Winston Churchill, “Nothing is more exhilarating than being shot at and missed.” It’s too bad Mr. Churchill never had an opportunity to ride with Mike or drive a Porsche in autocross.
I’m scratching my head wondering why all 2,200 PCA/OCR members are not out there monthly.
October 2014 PANDEMONIUM 37
Rice’s Ramblings... Continued from Page 19We learned some really neat lessons on cost savings and sometimes that meant to use some methods or parts that worked better than what the factory had to offer. Anyone ever heard of a Delta Mk X IGNITION KIT? Anyone tired of fouled spark plugs in the early day did. It was a kit for home-built high performance ignition. And it worked. Ask a grey hair Porsche driver.
And we called Porsche drivers –who drove hard “Porsche Pushers.” NO explanation needed. We understood that Porsches were mostly a hand-built car and there were small differences and oddities that we saw as adding ‘personality.’
While today’s Porsches have changed dramatically over the decades, they do have some key elements that are really not all that much different from back then. One is the need to understand how to drive our Porsches well and drive them fast safely.
Familiarity Owners need to acquaint themselves with their Porsche Owners Manuals. Many are only available online and
some are in print and found in the glove box (who uses gloves in SoCal?) The owners manual is a treasure of information; that is after you get past the legal stuff like “…don’t drink contents of the fuel tank- it can make you sick” etc., etc. Owners should learn how to use the onboard spare wheel, jack, and tools, and where are they located? You should check to see if it’s all there? Know where and how to check all fluid levels. Driving Autocross, and later on Time-Trial driving, are confidence builder #1. Lessons are relatively free and PCA offers free equipment and competent instructors. Orange Coast region offers new Porsche owners a chance to legally exceed speed limits and do it SAFELY! Learn how great Porsche brakes really are safe and in a fun way. Learn what going around turns smoothly and quickly feels like and doing it with 100% control and, again, doing it all safely.
You will experience that the sensations which may have caused you apprehension before will now, as you
learn, become only a warning sign for you to adjust your driving. You will feel in control because you have learned to be in control and gain a far better understanding of your Porsche. Oh, and one more thing: we call it FUN!
From these points I hope to impress that we need your impressions of your Porsche experiences to share with others that may be timid about trying some of our activities. And some of us enjoy the passion of repairing and modifying our Porsches.
We need you to share your questions, inquiries and experiences. This has been the backbone of Porsche membership since the very beginning and we need that today. What ever your need may be, there is somebody that has that knowledge out there somewhere. How about sharing your needs or expertise with us? We have excellent editors and those who can rewrite you thoughts, ideas, and questions to make them look nice. Don’t be concerned about that. So, think about it and share -Please.
Where’s the Pando? Kimble Skov recently took Pando with him to Japan!
Where will Pando go next? Send your photos and description of where you are
to Garey Cooper at [email protected]
We’re adding a new feature to Lee’s “Rice’s Ramblings” Article, “Ask a Mechanic.” If you have a question about your Porsche,
